Playful Kiss ratings round two: 3.7%
by javabeans
I know some viewers were holding out for a marked improvement in Playful Kiss‘s numbers given its surprisingly poor start yesterday, but alas, it was not to be. Episode 2 didn’t fare much better, following Episode 1’s 3.5% rating with a 3.7%.
Competitor drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu hit yet another series high at 45%, while My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho held firm with 12%.
Most of you probably don’t care about ratings numbers, and I don’t use them to gauge a show’s quality. These days there are other ways to catch dramas, such as rebroadcasts and online, and no doubt younger audiences gravitate toward those alternative methods. Still, the ratings are important in determining ad revenues, and that, as we know, can be significant. Heck, the current union strike is happening because these companies have no money to pay their actors because they’re spending more than they’re making. There are other residual benefits as well, with high-rated hits bringing in more CF opportunities for its cast. (Expect to see a LOT of Baker King‘s Yoon Shi-yoon in the near future!)
For its own sake, I hope Playful Kiss can hang in there until Baker King wraps. True, its successor, Rain‘s Runaway, may also provide competition, but at least they’ll be on more level playing ground. And there’s always the export market.

Even Lee Jun Ki's Hero had better ratings than this . I think if this continues MBC will cut down the episodes for sure like they did to Tamra and Heading to the Ground .

Oh damn another low number...
Well only thing to say is ppl are just not that interested in idol turn actor leads anymore.
but then again there is Seunggi who has decent numbers.
Well all we can say is hope the ratings will hit double digits.

They are all good & they all have their own following.
Honestly, I've been an avid follower of Dong Yi, Lee Seug Gi's Gumiho, Baker King.
I've included Playful Kiss on the list.
Now, my main problem is on how to watch them all in a week. Luckily we have the internet!

Episode 1 probably turned off a lot of viewers because of the boring, long fantasy sequence in the beginning and the quiet, boring parts where nothing interesting was happening. I fastforwarded through half of it b/c of it. I do like the cinematography actually, the pretty, quiet shots, and some of the music, though there seemed a little bit too much music trying to set the mood in the first episode. Some parts were amusing and some were cringeworthy (like the guy who likes the main girl character...i think they were trying to do something quirky with the Grease vibe but it came off just odd to me). And there are just parts I don't get. For example, why is Hyun Joong's character so popular? He get good grades and he's a loner--not exactly the recipe for mania...and yet, when he enters, there are girls screaming and following him like some idol had entered the building. Did this bug anyone else? The main girl character's overacting hasn't bothered me yet like Jandi's character had...at the same time, it hasn't endeared me to her yet.
Episode 2 definitely improves, probably b/c the story is actually going somewhere and khj does shine a little more in this role. I had so little expectation for his acting so that could help with my opinion.
Still slow and boring at times...but picking up some speed. Hopefully the chemistry picks up too and I'll be able to watch an episode without fastwording half of it...
Worst parts: Just slow. Needs more editing and chopping to pick up the speed. Also, need some more chemistry with the leads.
Best parts: The parent characters...they are more endearing than the main leads so far. Also KHJ has improved and role fits better.
Here and there, there are some sparks and I'm hopeful--I intend to check out the next 2 episodes and make a decision about whether it's worth my time to continue watching...

choosing both leads were the biggest mistake. don't have to explain why, but 1st ep was seriously dull and i guess the whole show is totally going to be filled with act cute syndrome. sorry, maybe i had expectations too high afterall the taiwanese version was so well loved and the ratings for both series 1&2 were so high.

Aw, too bad about the ratings. I was totally expecting the opposite from the fan reaction it bought out before it aired.
I just watched the first two and it's really cute! Nicely paced, maybe a bit jokesy, but most of them genuinely have me laughing out loud, and I really liked it!
And the Goong-vibe was so not displaced. They even re-used the little bear gimmick at the credits thingy.

I'm really shocked to see the too low ratings. first, I didn't get it. but then, even though I don't know exactly but I think Korean people like historical dramas more. and the most of the watchers are middle/old aged.
before the drama started, I was shocked to see its soompi page and couldn't believe as there were many pages before beginning. so thought that it will get high ratings. however, many fans must be from over-sea and watch eps from other sources not on tv just like me.
I hope the ratings will be higher, and the actors don't get disturbed about that...

rankly, first you have BYJ, then you have this KHJ who tries to imitate BYJ in every sense…please enough is enough. The younger version is equally Yuck!! Am so happy that the drama flop at the beginning. That will send these two metrosexual men, rethink about their apperance and appeal to fans!! I still believe actor with good acting skills like YJT will stand firm in the industry over time, as compared to these two pretty boys!!

KHJ is not a metrosexual, in fact, he's far from that. He's not a vain man at all! so research before saying something stupid, eh!

Okay, here's the deal. I was so excited to watch this drama and after I watched the first two episodes, I was not surprised that the ratings were low. Yes, sometimes ratings don't reflect the quality of the drama or how fun to watch it is, but you can't dismiss ratings entirely. There's always a reason why dramas have high ratings/low ratings. For example, Baker King has high ratings because it is a good drama. Playful kiss has a potentially cute storyline, but you don't see the actors/actresses coming together. Kim Hyun Joong, as much as I like him, doesn't seem like he improved much since Boys Before Flowers. Jung So Min is okay, better than Kim Hyun Joong in my opinion, but still there's no chemistry between the two. Also, I was slightly annoyed that it was so similar to Goong at the end..What happened to originality? I dunno, but for me, if the drama does not start picking up (very quickly), then I don't think I will watch this drama. If you're not as critical and are fans of either of the main characters, then go for it.

After seing the two first eps I can say it's better then expected.
There is wa more slapstick in the korean version compared to the TW version.
KHJ is not as bad as I thought but he doesn't stand out either. He does look very much his age in some shots though.
It has a very Goong-ish feel to it though and the teddies!!
There is very little chemistry between KHJ and the actress portraying Ha-ni. I hope this improves later on but for the moment there is nothing there if you compared to Ariel and Joe who had great chemistry since the first scene together.
The TW version might have had many flaws but the chemistry between Joe and Ariel as well as Jiro saved the drama. Now the korean version might have a clearer baseline but acting and on screen chemistry wise it is much weaker.

Y'know, just because someone is a pretty boy doesn't mean he's not a good actor. Kang Dong-won is about as pretty as they come, and I've always loved his style (as has pretty much everyone I know). Just because you happen not to like pretty men doesn't they suck.

i'm sorry but there are a lot of "pretty" boys that can act. there's won bin, ko soo, jang geun suk..and many more. just because they're good-looking doesn't mean that you have to bash them.
also, we are talking about the drama here. why blame one person when he is just one element of the drama? did you even watch it? if you did, then maybe you can try to be objective about your criticisms and not just blame it on one person who only had very little screen time and speaking lines on the first episode.

I don't think that being happy about a drama flop is a good thing. I myself wanted this drama to succeed in the beginning (although now I get why it has such low ratings). Hopefully, the drama picks up. But, with that said its not fair to associate bad acting with looks. Yes, Kim Hyun Joong has room for improvement, but a lot of actors/actresses that aren't as experienced need practice and some time to improve.
BTW, I do however I agree that the little brother is not at all how I expected him to be. When I read the manga I thought the little boy was so cute..In the drama, not so much.

It's like her life revolves around him, urgh. It's silly to think someone else can make you happy, you need to find happiness in yourself!
But anyway, I haven't watched it yet. I think the Taiwanese version had around 3.7 % ratings too, though, although I have no idea if that's a low number in Taiwan too D:

the Taiwanese version had around 3.7 %
I'm not 100% sure how the Taiwanese television ratings work but I have a feeling the numbers are not representative of a percentage. This means the fact that ISWAK rating a 3.7 is much different to Playful Kiss taking in 3.7% of viewership ratings.
As far as I know, anything above the 3.0 figure is considered thumbs up in Taiwan. The highest ever rated series to date is Fated To Love You & that registered a 8 point something.
But re PK, I've caught a glimpse of it so far & it's not as bad as I'd originally thought, albeit it's still not outstanding. I think atm it's more a case of bad-timing, w/ Baker King obviously already having solidified its viewers, it's pretty much tough-to-beat-down competition.
On top of that My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho, as a rom-com, is so much more refreshing than PK so the ratings for PK is completely understandable. But I don't think they should be overly concerned (for now at least) since I'm sure PK will be getting alot of revenue from overseas fans.

mmm...I dont about the public opinion...but suprisingly I like the drama...its doesnt have that confusing plot and really straightforward story...ive not yet watched KHJ other series like BOF, and the different version of the drama from japan and taiwan also havent, as for the manga...only the beginning and got tired really quickly...
bias is really a powerful thing...out of the 3 contending drama like kim tak gu and MGIG...i like kim tak gu better...I also couldnt escape from the cluthches of bias....suprisingly enough I cannot enjoy MGIG as much as I thought coz I saw too much of Lee Seung Gi in other show like 1n2d and SH....cause I seen too much of him these days, I seem unable to enjoy his drama...even though people have only praise for him in the drama...then again, I always seem to like what other people don't like, tthats the power of BIAS...when will human get rid of such feeling...hmmmmm.....mne and my ranting...*sigh....

Aish, looking forward to ep.3!! Feeling sorry for the cast and team, admittedly ep.1 wasn't great, but give it a chance in ep.2 and it's actually pretty entertaining!

Second episode was better, I decide to watch this drama without comparing it to ISWAK or GOONG, it obvious that the Screen Writer and the Director is doing they own thing. I personal don’t think mixing too great drama together is a bright idea, it cause a lot of confusing and it lack originality. The constant ping pong between ISWAK and GOONG give me a headache by the end of the episode I need a bowl of ice cream.

oh come on....give me a break, who say pretty boys can't act, that's an unfair statement, just because somebody is born pretty doesn't mean they suck at acting, Won Bin, Go Soo and Takeshi Kaneshiro are great examples, even Heath Ledger who has such a pretty face is a great actor, and to be fair, the show has only aired 2 episodes, most folks already knew about the manga/story from the chinese ISWAK version, so i'm sure there's not much surprises or twist to the plot, and to be fair, what kind of acting are we expecting since this is more like a young drama, i personally think that KHJ is a pretty good fit for this role as his off screen character is pretty much like this, quiet and reserved and abit aloof, for those who want to give this a shot, we should embrace the show with a open heart, and make no comparisons to Goong, ISWAK or BOF or whatsoever....it may be an enjoyable and heartwarming ride after all! at the end of the day, i'm sure the whole crew put their heart n soul into it. ;)

Selli ~ actually this show is pretty meaningful if you look at it from another angle, it talks about a couple with very different characters and IQ obviously who eventually fall in love with each other despite the differences, sure, some folks will be like why would a smartass like him fall in love with somebody who's neither pretty nor smart, but in real life, it's usually the simple things that mattered or touches people the most, i was pretty touched by the ISWAK version as the gal was so devoted to him and really eroded his protective shell bit by bit, some of the things she do might be silly, but i guess when you really love someone, you'll just do everything based on your heart/feelings, and you'll eventually find that they really complement each other, he will teach her things that she never knew, be it her studies, general knowledge and even help her find out what she really want to do in life, she in return teaches him the values of friendship, companionship and love, it's a simple yet touching story, and along the way, you learn how a couple should see the best in each other, and not just find fault or expect your partner to change to suit yourself, there's a reason why the manga and ISWAK was so popular, we should give this show a chance, and not just focus on who can't act etc

I think KJH is very good looking but not as attractive as Joe Cheng... i felt Joe Cheng just sucks you to keep watching him... with a straight face.. KJH needs to keep up but very less likely that he will get to that level.. it is a pity.. cos he has such a pretty face.. If it were LMH, he may be able to maintain Joe Cheng's level of attraction... KJH just lacks something to appeal you in that way..

As a fan of the manga, the anime, and the TW Drama, I was REALLY looking forward to this. Then, this morning, I finally got to sit down and watch it... and was so annoyed, I wanted to bang my head against a wall.
The acting was bad, the fantasy-segments were too long, there's no chemistry between the leads, the pacing is slow, a majority of the set looks fake, it borrows too much from Goong, everything is too exaggerated and cheesy (and not in a good way), the side-characters are annoying, it's only on episode two and the romance already feels forced, etc. And worst of all: The entire time I was watching it, I KNEW I was watching a drama...
I can already name seven dramas currently airing that had stronger first/second episodes. No matter how I look at it, this was a dismal failure. So really, I completely understand the rating. I feel so cheated and mad...

Practically there are not much viewers left for PK.
Baker King is busy baking and viewers are drooling what kind of bread it will come out ,while MGIG this week LSG is singing the Little Mermaid '..under the sea...' with love in his eyes doing all his little magic for Mi-ho. Who's gonna switch channel? On the other hand, PK had made a BIG mistake with that first 5-10 mins of episode one , let's blame it to the PD.
However, I started to like KHJ in episode 2, he was better than in BOF and held his own version of the main lead. At first I found the show was slow and kind of quiet then I remembered I was bored with this kind of directing in Goong too, so I adjusted myself to the directing style and stopped comparing the show to the original one, surprisingly, I found myself enjoying episode2, KHJ's glares and smiles won me over. The leads were cute , their chemistry are getting better.
When you are not comparing, PK holds its own version and feels Korean and I like that. Too bad it's in this tough time slot but I will continue to watch this show.

road number 1 ended with 5% ratings, baker king has reached national drama status/ratings, and gumiho is written by the hong sisters (the best writers for trendy rom-coms imo). pk started at a major disadvantage already. yes, the first ep was slow and boring, i blame it on the writing and editing. ep 2 was much better, faster paced and more screen time plus lines for khj. i thought his acting had improved. i don't know why people expect oscar calibre acting from an idol, who is only working on his second drama. pk has a lot of potential, but people are too harsh with their criticisms. comparisons are inevitable, but folks, it's entertainment. if you're not entertained, please move on and find something else to watch. i feel bad for the cast and crew of pk, they've worked hard and sadly, the results were lacking. hopefully, this makes them stronger and they work at making the drama more engaging. pk cast and crew hwaiting!

I don't think that KHJ plays flat though, he has got so much talent, if any already read the manga version, they would know how cold Erie (name in manga, the same character that KHJ playing) is and surprisingly KHJ keeps all the cool characters, he did good work. He didn't disappoint me at all.
Well rating of this drama will be improved very soon, the first two episodes couldn't count becasue the beginning of Playfull is just a pavement to the delicious story, please believe me :-)

It's mostly fluff and entertaining but it's a good drama. I tried to marathon ISWAK but I gave up after episode 16 the female character never changed and became her own person. She was way too obsessed with him. In this version although she likes him she at least has her own personality and isn't completely talentless at the very least she can draw and this one talent is a tremendous improvement from the character Ariel Lin played in ISWAK.

First Episode - too many unnecessary fantasy scenes and unnecessary fillers too. Am I the only who think JSM overacted a lot of times to the point of unrealistic?
KHJ's acting improved tremendously and they should have more scenes and more lines for him. I mean 45 minutes into the show, you barely saw him and didn't hear his voice. He is the bankable actor in the drama, so leverage him!
2nd episode - a lot better because there are more scenes of him and JSM and viewers like the interactions between these two, albeit I have yet to feel their chemistry.

People only watch this drama because of the hyped about KHJ. Sadly to say...his acting sucks. The story line is not strong. I hope they won't do scene like they did in BOF...just putting episodes to show KHJ face. The rating will remain like that unless some changes are made.
