Playful Kiss: Episode 8

Episode 7 was the first one I connected with on an emotional level (there was something in my eye, I swear), so I had higher expectations going into 8. We’re definitely in a better place than previous weeks, and I do think that this show actually improves from week to week.

Truthfully, it still hasn’t gripped me, but I enjoy it immensely, as the characters are all so lovely, quirky, and sweet. I think the style of the show is actually a nod to 50s Japanese cinema—it has that retro vibe to me, and it’s paced like an Ozu film, full of ellipses and driven by character rather than story. It’s not a horse that’s going to win any races, but it’s the underdog that keeps chugging along, just like Ha-ni would.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Ha-ni looks out her window in her room above the noodle shop wistfully. Dad comes up and tells her it’s just a temporary room, while work on the new house is being finished. She puts up a stiff upper lip and heads downstairs, but Duckie and Dad can’t manage to cheer her up.

At Seung-jo’s house, Mom is in a funk over Ha-ni’s departure. Seung-jo tries to convince her to go out, but she doesn’t want to do anything anymore, and nothing makes her laugh. She asks if he’s okay (a little accusingly) and he answers flatly that he finds it peaceful.

Mom: Peace? What is that peace? Is it knowing exactly what to expect? Having everything in the palm of your hand? Isn’t that why you were bored and suffocated before? Isn’t the reason you went to Parang because you disliked that peace?

Duckie gets permission from Dad to take Ha-ni out on a date, in an effort to cheer her up, but she doesn’t answer when he calls. Seung-jo takes out the present he got from Ha-ni before their college exams, and thinks of her.

The next day, Ha-ni announces to her friends that she’s not only left the house, but given up Seung-jo for good. She declares that she’s going to find a really awesome new boyfriend, and says goodbye to Seung-jo in her mind.

They drag her to lunch, saying that she has to face Seung-jo at some point, and sooner is better than later. But everyone stares at them oddly as they walk into the cafeteria. When they walk in, they see why. Duckie has put up an embarrassingly giant banner that declares Bong Joon-gu’s Current Love Mood: “Oh Ha-ni got tired of Baek Seung-jo so she said goodbye!” Okay, worst tweet ever.

The girls fear that Seung-jo will see it and assume the worst, but too late…he’s standing right behind them, and with He-ra at his heels, no less. He-ra further rubs salt in the wound by commenting on the childish ploy to get Seung-jo’s attention, but Ha-ni retorts that she’s forgotten Seung-jo already. He doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t look happy about it.

At Top Spin, Kyung-soo asks Seung-jo to attend their weekend retreat, and when he refuses, he challenges him to a doubles match: Seung-jo and Ha-ni vs. Kyung-soo and He-ra, and if Seung-jo loses, he has to attend the retreat.

Mom finds out that Seung-jo went to a Top Spin meeting, deducing that he must’ve gone to run into Ha-ni. She puts on sunglasses and goes herself, and runs into Min-ah and Ju-ri, who tell her about the ensuing match, and the fact that Seung-jo and Ha-ni kissed the night of graduation.

They lose the match, of course, due to Ha-ni’s inability to, well, play tennis. Kyung-soo rubs it in that it’s Seung-jo’s first loss ever, and challenges him to a rematch at the retreat, with the same partners. To Ha-ni’s horror, Seung-jo accepts, clearly because it’s an excuse to spend time with her, though he wouldn’t admit it.

He trains her, even putting his arms around her to show her how to swing, and she tries hard in her Ha-ni-esque way. He-ra notes to Seung-jo that Ha-ni seems to be working at it quite fervently (in her condescending tone, of course), and Seung-jo smiles as he tells her that Ha-ni is fun, and there’s a “fun in raising her,” because you can see directly that hard work equals results. She admits that it must be a new feeling for him, since he doesn’t have to try to be good at everything. He notes that He-ra is the same way, which is again a nod to the pot-lid metaphor.

Ha-ni packs for her retreat, and Duckie, taking some advice from Dad, chooses not to follow her, and instead packs her a lunch. He tells her to always think of him as “home”—the place where she can come back to, and he’ll always be there. AW. Ten points, Duckie.

At the retreat, Ha-ni gets singled out for being late, and gets saddled with dinner duty, missing out on training. He-ra also decides to tell her that she’s interested in Seung-jo, and plans to tell him. Why are you even saying this to her, you smug little princess? I can’t wait till he flat-out rejects you. I hope it’s in public.

Ha-ni struggles with dinner prep, so she pouts at Seung-jo to help her. He totally caves, making the entire dinner. The best part is, he lets her take all the credit for it. Cute.

At practice, he works her to the bone, but she doesn’t give up, sticking it through. He of course doesn’t say anything nice to her, but he smiles to himself, impressed by her snail-paced brand of doggedness.

The next day Seung-jo has to attend practice during dinner prep time, so Ha-ni has to go it alone. Everyone’s bewildered at the table full of burnt food, wondering what on earth happened to the master chef (they call her Dae Jang Geum, ha) from last night. Seung-jo gets outed as the culprit.

Later that night, Ha-ni keeps an eagle eye on He-ra, who is about to make her move. She calls Seung-jo outside for a private conversation, and Ha-ni can’t help but follow. She eavesdrops as He-ra tells Seung-jo that she likes him. She asks how he feels, and he doesn’t answer.

It turns out they have quite an audience, however, as Kyung-soo creeps up from behind them, running smack dab into Ha-ni and scaring her. They make enough noise to get caught red-handed by Seung-jo, who uses the opportunity to dodge He-ra.

He grabs Ha-ni by the wrist and takes her away for more practice, leaving He-ra behind. Well there’s your answer right there, Miss Perfect. She looks down in disappointment, then throws a glare at Kyung-soo.

It’s the last day of the retreat and Ha-ni practices hard till the match. She manages to get her serve down, which is a huge accomplishment, and Seung-jo smiles as he watches her. He congratulates her on a job well done and flashes her a smile, and Ha-ni’s resolve melts in all of .5 seconds.

But of course, being Ha-ni, she can’t do anything without incident, so she slips on a tennis ball and sprains her ankle. Seung-jo tends to her sweetly, telling her to get on his back. He’s voluntarily piggybacking you now? You are totally the winner.

He tells Kyung-soo that they’ll play the match another time, and carries Ha-ni away, smiling. Aw. You lurve her! Even He-ra smiles as she concedes defeat…at least for now.

Following more of Dad’s advice, Duckie undergoes a makeover. Kyah, hello, Cutie! You were adorable before, but now you’re kinda manly AND adorable. But Ha-ni has no chance to react, as she gets brought home by Seung-jo, limping from her injury.

Seung-jo’s presence totally steals his thunder, and Duckie slinks away dejected. He takes it hard, but is soon enough back to his usual chipper self, loving Ha-ni from afar. Poor puppy. Your devotion is sweetness itself.

He-ra asks Seung-jo to a movie after class, and Ha-ni follows them. You’re turning into a regular stalker, aren’t you? She sighs that she’s always dreamed of going on a date like this with Seung-jo, picking out what to wear, where they’d go…but now all of those things will belong to He-ra.

She turns around to stay hidden, and lo and behold, Kyung-soo’s here stalking them too. He suggests they join forces, in an attempt to stop the unholy union that is He-ra and Seung-jo. They head into the movie together. (Gah, does everyone get to watch Cyrano Dating Agency but me?)

During the movie, He-ra tries to lean on Seung-jo’s shoulder, but Ha-ni blocks her with a magazine. Heh. They finish the movie without incident, but when Ha-ni sees Seung-jo being kind and friendly with He-ra, she doesn’t want to follow anymore. She asks herself what she’s doing, and faces facts—if they like each other, there’s nothing she can do.

She gives up, not wanting to become any more pathetic. She turns to walk away before her tears come tumbling out, but in her haste she runs right into a large guy with an ice cream cone. The guy freaks out about his expensive jacket being ruined, and starts demanding money from Kyung-soo.

He turns out to be a gangster, and his backup arrives as he starts pushing Kyung-soo around. Ha-ni gets knocked to the ground in the scuffle, and Seung-jo appears by her side, to help her up. He gives Kyung-soo the signal to take care of He-ra, and on the count of three, each of them grabs a girl and runs in opposite directions.

Seung-jo takes off running with Ha-ni, both of them smiling as they leap in step with each other.

COMMENTS

Not as good as Episode 7, which had such a strong emotional beat in Ha-ni’s departure from Seung-jo’s house. But I enjoy her current arc of attempting to get over Seung-jo and put herself first, which is never easy, but important for her to learn. I like that her crush has taken on a more serious tone, as Duckie’s has too. The changeover to college is a nice tonal shift, because the narrative is finally attempting to put more emotional weight behind each significant moment, rather than glibly stringing along a series of cute scenes, as it did in the high school segment.

I think proactive Seung-jo is definitely a step up, even if he’s still kind of emotionally unaware. I sort of wish they’d play up his social ineptness a little bit more, actually, because it would help to tip the scales in his favor. I want his flaws to be…more flawed.

The love triangles are also taking up a lot more real estate, which I’m good with, since it’s really the only dramatic tension we get in this drama. I hope He-ra continues to be a fierce opponent for Ha-ni, because I can’t wait to see her fall off her high horse.

But what I’m really dying for is a main loveline for Duckie. He’s finally starting to step up his game, and I want him to have a fighting chance for Ha-ni’s heart. Seung-jo deserves to be on the bench for a while, stewing in some good old-fashioned jealousy. I want him to know what he gave up and regret it, and realize his mistake when he sees Duckie being there for Ha-ni.

What we need is something to take the tension past lukewarm. I want some turning of the tables, because I want Seung-jo to earn Ha-ni’s devotion, even if he doesn’t need to.

After many complaints, the show is starting to be less predictable. 6-7 episodes of repetition of the taiwan drama was NOT good. Plus, I think the taiwan one was much better in a few of my favourite scenes, especially the kiss scene. I noticed that your commentaries for this drama is shorter. I guess there is not much to chew on. Imho, It's a fun manga story that goes back to basics. The fairy god mother, the perfect prince, the perfectly evil rival and the belief that hard work wins all. After many heart wrenching stories from the excruciatingly painful Cinderella's stepsis to revenge tactics in other shows, I think Playful kiss came at a right time. Dramas explore the depths of human emotion but also let's us dream. And childhood dreams should be simple and enjoyable and tell us things like "As long as you put your mind to it, anything is possible, so dream even if you think you don't deserve it!"

thanks gf!!!! you made my day start with a smile because of this recap!

loved the episode 8 because everybody step up its game. from he-ra's confession to duckie's transformations, hani's letting go and seung jo's actions towards hani. the dyanamics are changing and i say bring it on! the more the better!!!

poor duckie, his efforts were not appreciated by hani. but i like to see how seung jo would react if duckie would continue his serious persuit for hani's heart.

b+ for hani's effort of letting seung jo go. but we all know she's fighting a losing battle coz with just 1 smile from seung jo and she's already melted.

so happy for the changes of seung jo, his actions speak volumes of his unspoken words. or maybe because he's still dont really know what words could describe it. hopefully someone could give seung jo an EQ dictionary for him to find out what his actions towards hani means.

im excited on whats ahead, will seung jo continue to be thaw by oh hani's warm and lovable personality or he would snap back to his robotic ways?

no previews for the next episodes so its gonna be an agonazing days of waiting for wednesday and thursday.

PK AJA! FIGHTING!!!

I liked this ep a lot.. I can relate to HaNi so much when it comes to trying to forget the guy you love but he keeps doing things for you that keep you holding on.. I was like that for 2 years on my ex so I can relate so much... I just finished the 25ep anime for itazura na kiss.. I wish they include everything in this drama too considering its suffering on ratings and they might not want to do a sequel, because I love happy endings and it would suck if they won't finish it like the anime version.. But I can always just imagine it in my head.. Lol

wow GF!! thank you for the recap! i'm so glad seung-jo is being nice to hani. so sweet! *squee*
*shuts fangirlness in a drawer* i feel so bad for duckie and the actor who plays him. i'm sure it takes hard work to keep up the accent, but viewers don't even like it. and his character, duckie, is always being so nice to hani, but she never pays him any attention. i wonder if its one of those cases where someone loves the "idea" of someone, but not the actual person...
i also hope seung-jo will do something really good, or become a good person, so he can deserve hani.
go PK!! :D

Thank you so much for your recap! I can't tell you how much I waited for the recap. I kept checking this site for days.

Haha... i love how BSJ is acting in this ep. He's unconsciously drawn to Hani even though I think he would rather die rather than admit to anyone, even himself, that he misses her.
We have plenty of proof though:
1. not happy that hani decided to forget you? mere strangers now? haha, as if you're going to let it rest. so what do you do?....
2. Mr. special-treatment-so-im-never-showing-up-for-tennis suddenly decides to make an appearance. miss her much?
3. given your character, you could have refused the match and get away with it, so why didn't you... isnt it because you wanted to spend 2 days with hani?
4. why on earth would you take out the fork and look at it? we know you have it bad.
5. admit it... as much as you complain about her failures, hani is the only one you'll ever be willing to teach anything for. you might boast about being miracle worker but you'll only ever use you're teaching talents for for hani right?
6. haha. and why would you react as you did when you found hani and sunbae in a "compromising" situation between the bush. as unbelievable and unlikely the fact that they might have been having "fun", you're jealous aren't you. admit it.
7. and why take hani with you, and not haera for the run?
8. just for hani: smile, smile, smile, smile, piggyback+smile... seriously, i'm going to die if you continue. fortunately, i don't mind dying, so keep it up.

Conclusion: dude, you might not now it but you're surely falling in luuuuv.

I found the fancams to the hospital scene.. guess we're back to the anime storyline now.

Fickle fan that I am, why is it that I no longer wish to see Seung Jo in a white coat? Must be all those philosophical BS in ep 7.. they've gone and made me long to see a Bohemian, rumpled-looking Dr. Baek Seung Jo (PhD) instead of the no-nonsense, hardworking Dr. Baek Seung Jo (MD) I wanted to see before.

Anyway, from the preview, it seems they follow anime and manga, about BSJ living by himself...
I really x know by now how are they going to cramp all these within 8 episodes... prob the ending is just the wedding? Darn I wish to see more...

Ahh why 16 only and not 24... Darnnnnnn!!!

Thank you for the recap.

"Stalker" Ha Ni reminds me of my jr hi and hi school days...not that I was that obvious (maybe I was..hehe). I would take the longer way to class just to possibly run into him...oh hi, what a coinkidink. Or...me and my girlfriends just casually walking by his house...destination nowhere. Omg the prank calls just to hear his voice...lol. Or...going to the skating rink knowing he and his friends would be there. We were complete dorks!!!

I really adore PK and JSM is so so so wonderful as OHN. Her facial expressions are just a joy to watch.

^Ami....I was thinking about PhD BSJ...because of the philosophy stuff in Epi 7 and then his mom mentioning that she has depression. Could that be possible?

lol.... i would never admit to this in my personal life to anybody but i stalked too in high school.... and it was not even that bad of a crush. i wouldn't even call it a crush with introspection... it merely lasted weeks. and yet, i also tried to be at places i knew he would be even though that meant taking a totally different route, staying longer at school, finding excuses to be wherever he was, even having to wait hours in vain. i never even brought myself to talk to him.... and the whole time, in my head, i was thinking "what on earth am i doing? i'm completely insane. this is not even worth it" and yet, i couldnt prevent myself. so i totally understand why hani would do the embarrassing that she does to someone she's been loving for several years.
as for the ending... in the end, the guy actually noticed me and approached me first, with the encouragement of his friend a few meters behind. he was blushing as well. it was totally cute to see. and then, when he finally talked to me. i became scared and rejected him. -_-" i know. i'm COMPLETELY stupid. i kept kinda stalking him though... except, i think, since i rejected him, he thought i was there for other reasons. haha.

I'm really digging into this drama! Although it's not enjoying the limelight it shld be soaking in, but the productions and actors/actresses hard work is not to be belittled. They really wrk very hard during the filming...look at HJL during the filming, he's looking very tired. My heart goes out to him. So, dun criticise this drama, it deserves some praise.
Anyways, i'm so anxious as to how the Hani-Seung Jo-He-ra-Joon Gu love complex will wrk out. It's getting more exciting! Just a little infor, Hani will moved back to Seung Jo's house either in ep 9 or 10 :)

I agree with you there... well, i guess anyone can freely state their opinion though so i don't know. it just hurts me when they criticize the cast/crew though. what i found surprising was that many (and i mean many) people were criticizing JSM's perf as hani... i think she's the cutest, most adorable thing ever but some people found her really annoying and kept comparing her negatively to ariel lin and yoon eun hye, which makes me sad.
and KHJ may not be the most brilliant actor but he sure is working hard. i've just seen the long preview of ep 9 and the poor guy looks half-dead, borderline zombieyish. all his muscular and toned body was gone and at one point, he looked ridiculously skinny, as much as his debut days.
that added to the low ratings. i really hope the cast/crew don't give up on the drama though.
PK fighting!

Yay! Yay! At the ending scene (which I loved the framing, what a dynamic!), I screamed to my screen ALRIGHT! This is it! (Michael Jackson).LOL.

I love this ep more than the previous, sweet, more dynamic between the couple, and seriously hot Duckie with his new hairdo.

When SJ piggybacked HN after the accident and he smiled (Damn, so cute), this is the first time I felt something for this couple and really felt these two belong together. The background music was better too.

Phew! relieved, what a show making me staying on my toes wanted it to become better. And my permed Peter Pan really do the magic this time. I hope I can breath properly from now (I have to admit I cringed so many times of HN's behaviors i.e. stalking SJ, etc...).

The thing I couldn't swallow in this ep, eh...that stupid banner saying HN is over with SJ, c'mon in uni? If I were HN, I would have strangled Duckie to death, too childish and what a public humiliation too. All in all, love this ep, congrats PK, you are better!!!

Thanks GF for the recap!

Oh SJ’s mom, I am officially your fan. You moved me with your little speech to your son about his life. I honestly thought that you didn't know what was going on with him. It now seems like in the entire eight episodes of this drama, you were the the one who knew everything. Now I understand that your troublemaking ideas, your disguises, and your little antics were for your family (and for your own sake).

Oh BSJ, you are smitten and you don’t know it. Don’t think that we don’t know you go to tennis practice because HN is there. You agreed to the match to spend time with her. And I think you gave her a piggy back ride to sort of declare your territory to the tennis club president. Since she is not at home, you then seek her out by being where she is. As they say, if Mohammed cannot go to the mountain then the mountain will have to come to Mohammed!

I wonder if Duckie is really in lovewith Ha Ni or he is just consumed with extreme gratitute. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying he doesn’t love her because I know he does. It is just that I can’t help but compare his ‘love’ for Ha Ni to a hostage victim in debt to his/her rescuer. Like a patient, rescued by a doctor. I think he loves her in the sense that he wants to give all that he could for her, like giving back what she did for him.

What do you guys think?

I dunno why but i have a feeling that Seung Jo is actually using Ha Ni when he volunteered to piggyback her when she fell. Hae Ra was there and I sorta felt that it was only an act showing Hae Ra that he's not interested in her, just like how he avoided her question by pulling Ha Ni away for practice. But then, I don't really get why he agreed to go for movie with Hae Ra..Anyhow, the piggyback scene + Seung Jo's smile is so sweet. Love it lots!! Can't wait for Epi 9 and 10. :)

i sort of had that feeling too that he was "using" hani to sort of signal He-ra to bugger off.. then again, if that was his intentions he could have refused her invite to the movies.

0

Required fields are marked *

lol... For me, the reason why he would pull Hani for practice has little to do (if not at all) with Haera. I think it's because he found Hani behind the bushes with the sunbae and they looked like they MIGHT have been meeting there and about to get close so he was jealous, and angry at her, reprimanding for "having fun" when she needed to practice. Basically, he wanted to get her away from the sunbae. I think at that point, poor Haera was probably at the far back of his mind.
And I think that goes for the piggybacking as well. With Hani hurt, Haera is pretty much relegated to the back. Hani involved=no thoughts for Haera involved. haha.
The reason he agrees to go with Haera is because he views her as a pure and simple friend. Someone that can finally understand and think like him. I don't think he ever had any romantic thought for Haera. She might as well be male and it wouldn't make much of a difference with the way he feels for her.

The one thing that ticked me off was the tennis bit. In the Taiwan version her character played with the hurt ankle while in this he just gives up before they play the game. I liked the other way better. It showed her determination better than how they tried to approach it with the training.

With how they wrote it for this version, it doesn't show her determination but plays off of Seung-Jo showing concern. It made the scenes where she trained so hard amount to squat cus he got her out of the game entirely.

That was my only beef with this episode, because I would have liked it a bit more if they showed that side of Ha-ni rather than just the weaker part of her personality.

Thank you Girlfriday for the recap.. have been waiting for days! :)

the show just keeps getting better and it got me hooked. though i have to lament on ep 7 that they could have showed a few more seconds of SeungJo holding on to the toy dog keychain instead of just cutting it off abruptly.

not sure if the rest of you felt that SeungJo's change in attitude towards Hani was a bit sudden and abrupt? One second he was cold then the whole of ep 8 his emotions came pouring out.. from the cafeteria where he seemed unhappy at Hani's declaration of having no relations to him to the smiles during the tennis practices. Like suddenly he knows how to smile and warm up to Hani?!

the piggy-back exit at the tennis court was really a sloooooow one.. it seemed as though he was savouring every moment of her on his back, listening to her heartbeat.. sweet! i like it now that he seems more human, more pro-active and warm towards our lovelorn Hani.

actually i am not hoping for SeungJo to "work hard" to get Hani's affection (not that he needs to work for it since she is so helplessly in love with him) despite Duckie now becoming a more obvious opponent. I just want him to feel the jealousy, to feel the threat and then react to it..

ecaxtly! Hani might had overlooked Duckie's transformation but Seung-jo definitely noticed it and his expressions was kinda like : oh, crap! This bungling guy has transformed himself from ridiculous to hot. Competition, competition for Hani's affection! No, i'm not going to lose!

:P

XD. Joongu can always try but he'll never be able to make Hani smile for him the way she does for Seungjo. But he doesn't know that... so, it does not hurt to have competition sometimes. Haha.

Thanks for the recap :)
LOOOVED loved loved this epi , it was BSJ smiling all the way , almost from the begining till the end .
Loved his kind of sad expressions when OHN declared she doesn't love him anymore , loved when he went to the tennis club to see her ( though he is not admitting it ) , loved when he helped her with cooking , loved when he decided to train her and when he came to help her standing up when that gang guy pushed her , loved also his jealousy when he found her with Kyung-soo and how he dragged her , but for me the best scene of epi 8 was the last tennis scene , he was smiling at her and didn't take off his eyes from her and then comes the pyggyback that was soooo cute .
I'm so waiting for the next epi , if someone have the link to epi 9 long preveiew then please post it here , really not able to wait till wednesday , that's too tough for me :P

um, dunno if i can help you there... i'm not fluent in korean... i only understand about 70-80% of what they say so i might be wrong but basically, the summary is (i'm doing this from memory so it's not exact):

SPOILER ep 9 don't read if you don't want to be spoiled

seungjo runs with hani. then hani says that if he likes haera, then she can't do much about it and seungjo suddenly asks her where she wants to go. then at the lake, hani remarks that there are no couple on the boats and seunjo says that it's because if it's a couple then it would be bad for the relationship, so hani jumps up and falls. -_-" and then, when they talk together, hani asks seungjo why he didn't run with haera and he says she was closest to him. and then seungjo starts to talk about how he didn't like the changes she brought to his life but now, he can accept it. and hani asks for clarification and he says if she can't understand, then forget it. and she says she does and then, she thinks he's proposing to her... (ah, really, hani and her wild imagination... haha) and then she's so touched by the fact that he had accepted her, or rather, like he says, he "doesn't hate it" that she hugs him and says that she'll try her best to like him and not be a bother to him and all that and that she'll do anything for him. and he asks her to prove it with her exam scores. haha. and then, seungjo talks to haera about his feelings and she's surprised he's talking to her about it. but then, he says that it's hani that made him change his views about his world and that there are many things he didnt know. and then he thanks her for making him realize that. haha. and then, he tells his parents he wants to be independent and move out.

i hope i didn't miss any scenes.
again, my korean is not quite up to par so this is not accurate.

LOVED LOVED the look on SJ and HN faces when they leapt - hand in hand - over that hurdle at the end.
If SJ was looking for that racing heart feeling, he certainly got his wish, didn't he? So he'll start to get addicted to that feeling, and he'll want more, and who will he turn to for it?
Our HN! YAY!

As far as Duckie, as beautiful as his transformation was, I don't see HN feeling anything but warm affection for him. Maybe the Drama will set up scenes for SJ to be jealous, but HN's heart will never be in danger.

PS I got a Lee Min Ho vibe off new Duckie at one point. The eyes and cheekbones.

Required fields are marked *

exactly my thoughts.... the only person who can make seungjo feel anything and be warm is Hani... and same goes for Hani.
As much as I love joongu and as much as he is sweet, HN will never be moved by him, or I should say, her heart would never be moved by him. She might feel sympathy for him, but it'll never be the romantic love. It's quite sad, I know, but like Hani's lid is only for Seungjo, the pot that Hani wants is only Seungjo because Seungjo maybe a jerk, and cold, but he's the only one who can make her smile (or cry) like she does whenever she is with him or where he is concerned.
So although joongu would be the wisest, most sensitive choice, love is not much about sense... poor Duckie though.
but you're right, that doesn't mean that seungjo won't feel any jealousy for joongu. heck, he was even jealous of the sunbae even he knows clearly that the one hani likes is himself.

About the piggyback, I figured that Seung Jo also had in mind to check on Ha Ni's heart, whether it was still beating fast for him or not (like the 1st time he carried her) after she stated at the cafeteria that she was over him. That's our clever boy, huh? ^^

Does anybody know yet how did PK fare with the ratings last week? I know it sounds crazy but been praying that the ratings will go up so we can have the 20 ep and not 16...

The 20 ep ship for PK has sailed long ago. I'm just thankful we get 16 eps out of this.

Even with the slight ratings uptick, it's still dreadfully low.

thank you GF and JB for your recaps. like some who have mentioned... i find myself checking DB for recaps of PK (and MGIAG) before watching the episodes. i've also found myself being satisfied with just recaps with MGIAG, but heading over to viikii to watch PK in order to satisfy my addiction.

tried to watch the TW version, but couldn't get past the 1st few minutes O.- this version had a slow start, but its undeniable, unexplainable charm has pulled me in. the piggyback scene was too extended to be effectual IMO. but KHJ random smiles at random times (awkward as they may be) gives some life to his portrayal of SJ. agree, his acting has improved from his BOF days. he would totally pawn this with more facial expressions accompanied by snarky dialect.

Hi, there!

Thanks GF for recap! It's awesome as usual :)

I totally enjoyed 8 episode, especially, the ending! One thing that made me sad was Duckie's suffering...Poor guy, I was crying...It was so touching when he made dish for Ha Ni, my heart was melting! I'm really sorry for him! Nothing can conforts his heart :'( But I sincerely hope he'll be happy, this guy really deserves it!
Btw, his new hair-cut rules ;)

Finally Seung Jo began showing his actual feelings!!! We can see that he really admires Ha Ni! Jun So Min is great cuz she shows us the REAL *kotoko*! She is sweetheart girl with good and strong personality, just not too clever and troublesome! I can clearly see why Seung Jo felt for her!

I hope next episodes will be even better :)

Thank yo so much GF and JB for the recaps! :-)

Ugh, why does every second female lead has to be either evil, bitchy, or just damn annoying??? Even some second male lead has a fighting chance with the female lead. Why do we ever not see one second female lead with the same chance and support? It sucks.

0

Required fields are marked *

Lol... I totally i agree with you. I also noticed that tendency in dramas to make female rivals unlikable. I think the main reason is that most of the drama-viewers are females. Most of my guy friends would rather die than watch k-dramas... and so we tend to sympathize and identify with the female lead, and if we were her, it would be easier for us to have a completely unworthy female rival. And it's the fantasy of many women to have two (or more) likable guys pursue you. So the dramas basically try to satisfy the female viewers.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Like in IRIS, where kim so yeon totally kicked as. but then again, that drama also had more male viewers.

Required fields are marked *

i don't know if it's because i've watched the previous versions. but in all other versions, duckie was never serious competition until right at the crucial moment. it was never believable that hani could ever fall for duckie in the previous versions because he was a complete caricature as a character. all his actions and words were cartoonish. here though, although he's still comical, there's more substance to his portrayal that makes him go beyond being a simple 1-dimensional character.
this version is the only version where i actually feel real pain for his character's hurt and sympathize with him and find him sweet. because he was so exaggerated in the other versions, altho i did sympathize with him, it wasn't anything strong because he's character was so exaggerated it didn't make him feel real.
here though, he touched me with his sincerity. he's like hani's male version. just like hani's world is revolved around seungjo, he only thinks of hani. sure, he may not have the brain but he sure does have the heart.
but perhaps i like him only because i can compare him with his other versions but that without them, i would find him creepy and obnoxious as well.

Required fields are marked *

If you think Duck's a creep, logically Hani would be a creep too so why even watch?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

i must admit that duckie bugs me too... i tried to feel for him, but somehow i can't...

in most of the dramas i watch, i always tend to root for the good-at-heart 2nd male lead over the main male lead, but duckie.... i dunno, even after his transformated 'handsome' self, i still find him (dare i say it) irritating...

i've actually thought about it a little, and i think it's coz i feel that he imposes his feelings on hani, and he doesn't really understand her needs at the end of the day.

his typical duckie style seems to be completely loud and in-your-face, what HE thinks hani needs, and not truly understanding what she thinks or wants.

he doesn't know how to keep the right distance, or he'll do over-the-top things thinking that it'll gain her affections, when in actual fact, it's rather scary?...

maybe u could argue that hani is similar to him, but i feel like she actually understands seung jo a bit, and brings out a better man in him.
but i don't think that i can say that for duckie towards hani...

that's why i felt like what hani's father said to him makes a lot of sense. he really needs to change the way he is, or he'll never become a viable competitor for hani's love.

well, unless the script starts changing him up into a more "typical" 2nd male lead, as it seems to be doing! eg. getting new image, becoming more "jihoo"-esque, in essence

to me, he's actually the one that i don't prefer over the TW version (no bashing meant! just my personal thoughts). i prefer everything else in KR version, except him.....

i liked ah-jin in the TW version a lot as he was the right mix of everything, just a truly sweet guy. i cried in the scene where ****spoiler**** he tried to kiss xiangqin and she refused him ***spoiler****
here, if duckie tries to pull that same stunt on hani, i'll probably feel like $#%@ him!!! but.... that's just me and my thoughts.

anyway, really really enjoying PK!!! and just watched ep 9 long preview coz couldn't contain my excitement anymore. in a few more hours... pali pali come!!!!!

you know... i actually have to disagree a bit, although i see where you're coming from... i agree about what you said about duckie but i think hani is the same with seungjo. all she does is following him around and having him fix her mistakes and annoying the hell out of him sometimes like having her friends come over... well i'm sure she can't annoy him that much since he totally caves in whenever she's concerned cuz, honestly, who can refuse that cute thing but she doesn't really understand him either. and i'm sure duckie would be able to bring the better of hani as well if she gave him any chance.
i think the real difference here is that hani-seungjo=mutual although seungjo probably doesn't no it, and hani-duckie=complete one way affection.

What I meant is that those dramas I've mention carries the same weight, a girl disguises herself as a boy, waiting to be discovered, all the hot boys then will fall for her craps n stuff, all those moments of discoveries, angst of who gets who... regardless the setting or what era they're from, its the same old stuff, so what is boring actually? PK? It's a different story right?

So please don't compare them, its two different story. Like apple and apple, or orange and orange. You don't compare apple and orange, would u? Sigh...

p/s : BOF is about old poor girl and a rich boy, which totally different.

0

lol.. i forgot about the disguise angle... good point.
didn't mean to offend you by comparing and saying that SKKS might have more of an "exciting" plot. don't get me wrong, i actually am more hyped up about PK.
which is actually why i'm here when it's way past sleep time.... haha. somehow, i can't seem to fall asleep after seeing the teaser. i tried, trust me. and i ended up on my computer again. sigh, please let tomorrow morning come faster. i think i need to see ep 9 or ill stay restless.

0

No worries, none taken ^^ hope I didn't offend you either, just want to point out my thoughts more exactly and not just to you but to others as well and those who always wonder why oh why did we watch PK...

And about the epi 9 teaser, we're in the same seat, I cant help but squeelllllll like a little girl! Finally some skinship lol It makes me more and more hyped too... Can't wait to watch tonite ^^

0

ditto. none taken! ^^
i'm always mostly on good terms with anyone who likes PK. haha.
as for skinship, what about the kiss? piggyback? but i'm not complaining about having more.. haha. never hurts.
just a few hours left. i slept like 3-4 hrs today... TT couldn't fall asleep.
