Playful Kiss: Episode 4

Show, you’re awfully cute, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’re all poof, no punch. Thankfully, I like all your characters, who are endearingly good-natured and sweet, so you’re not without your merits, and I have fun when I’m with you. I know, I can be a bit of a Goldilocks—I complain when there’s too much drama, I complain when there’s not enough. But really, I want some stakes. Somebody, bring me the stakes!

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Ha-ni’s friends insist on seeing Baek Seung-jo’s house, so she brings them for just a peek from the outside, when Mom finds them and insists they come inside, to Ha-ni’s horror. She’s sure that Seung-jo will be furious. I think you should go with your gut on that one. Duckie has followed them there, and pouts like a sad little duck as he watches them go inside, confirming that she really does live there.

Seung-jo comes home and has a fit, already angry because of the rumors, and annoyed that she’s bringing friends home now to gawk. Mom intervenes, saying that she heard the news, and takes the blame for the picture and the blog. He doesn’t let up, demanding that Mom take down the blog this instant, But she isn’t about to give up her hobbies over her teenage son’s rumor-angst. He yells at Ha-ni to leave him alone and huffs upstairs.

Ha-ni’s friends start to leave to avoid the awkward tension, but Mom invites Ha-ni’s friends on their camping trip to the beach this weekend. Ha-ni worries about missing school, but Mom insists it’ll be fine. Well that should be a fun time.

Duckie calls Dad for some money, desperate to rent Ha-ni a room somewhere so he can get her out of Seung-jo’s house. But alas, that’s not an option to poor Duckie. He gets some unsolicited love advice from a bum via Van Gogh, and it revives his conviction to try his best to win Ha-ni over.

That night Seung-jo still has it out for Ha-ni, and growls at her all over again, still pissy that she’s made their living situation public and generally interfering with his life. She takes it, and cries alone in her room, thinking that she didn’t even cry when The Letter happened, but now she can’t hold back the tears.

Later, Seung-jo stews in his room with his window open, and he can hear Ha-ni on the phone with a friend, insisting that she’s fine, and even defending him, saying that he must’ve been really shocked by the rumors, and that she’d react the same way. This softens his mood a little, since she’s clearly the most understanding person ever.

They each sit at their windows, thinking over their actions of late. How cute that their windows are right next to each other. I love those directorial touches. I remember loving the across-the-hallway antics in Goong.

The next morning Seung-jo wakes up to find that he’s not going to school like he thought…they’re all going camping at the beach for the weekend, and he’s being dragged along. Little Brother Eun-jo has already been kidnapped by Dad and is being held hostage in the car. Something’s wrong when both young boys in the family would rather go to school than play hooky and go to the beach. Were you both dropped on your heads as small children?

The family plus Ha-ni’s friends get ready to leave, when Mean Girl shows up unannounced, ready to join the party. Hey rude-o, who invited you? Duckie goes to school to find all the girls gone, and when he finds out that Ha-ni is at the beach with Seung-jo, he flips his lid. With no money and no way to get there, he uses a sick aunt as an excuse to ask the principal for his scooter, and heads to the beach in glee. A girl stops him in the street to give him a promotional lighter, and when he reads the label, he sees that it’s for a massage parlor. Without thinking, he puts it in his pocket, which I’m sure he’ll come to regret later.

The family heads to the beach in their little camper, and Mom sneers disapprovingly at Mean Girl, who has ingratiated herself with no tact. She suggests karaoke, which Mom shoots down, so Ha-ni suggests they play a word game. They go around, and when it’s her turn, she has to say a four-syllable phrase starting with “baek,” so she blurts out, “Baek Seung-jo, jjang!” (jjang = best) Hahaha. Okay, you got me there, Show. Laughed out loud.

He smiles widely, teasing her that she must’ve wanted to say that badly, since she was the one who suggested the game. She’s embarrassed, but she laughs good-naturedly. When these two are teasing and laughing they’re a-DOR-able.

When they arrive, Mean Girl changes into a skimpy bikini, while Ha-ni wears a cutesy one-piece. Mom tells her that she’s the cutest, and fishes for Seung-jo to tell her the same, but he replies that she looks like a grade-schooler. He nonchalantly walks up to her and hands her a pair of socks, saying, “You need these, right?” Ha. How totally unexpected and funny of you, Seung-jo. You have a sense of humor!

Ha-ni looks at them, not getting the connection at first, and then it dawns on her that he remembers her sock incident from the other day and knows that they’re for, erm, enhancements. She looks over at him in a murderous rage, and mutters under her breath, “God, today I will end that jerk, and go to Hell.” Ha. I love her.

She runs over to him, yelling at the top of her lungs, but trips and falls flat on her face. He asks if she’s okay, but then when he sees how mad she is, he takes off running. She chases after him, and when she falls again, he makes sure she’s okay, and runs away again. Aw, I love it when these two are chasing each other like little kids. So cute.

On his way to the beach, Duckie has some scooter trouble, so he pulls over and takes a peek in the gas tank. It’s too dark to tell if it’s empty (because you can’t look at the gas gauge?) so he takes out that lighter, and peers inside…

Heh. So, not the brightest bulb. Well, that lighter did come back to bite you in the ass. Just not in the way that I thought.

While everyone is resting, (and the two dads are buried in the sand) little Eun-jo starts teasing Ha-ni, so she gives chase, and he ends up going into the water and egging her on to come and get him. He starts to lose control and flails about, and Ha-ni screams for help but she’s too far for anyone to hear her. She braces herself and jumps in after him, but then they both end up struggling in the water.

From a distance, Seung-jo keeps an eye on them, thinking at first that they’re playing around. But then he sees Ha-ni waving her arms in the air and takes off running like the wind. He goes in after them, and Min-ah is right behind, and she pulls Eun-jo out. He sputters out some water, but is okay.

Seung-jo hauls Ha-ni out, and she’s more traumatized than anything else, because she’s afraid of the water and can’t swim. She clings to him in terror, crying, as they fall to the ground and she leans on his chest, crying uncontrollably.

Later as the bbq gets going, Dad has a heart to heart with Ha-ni, saying that he was so scared when she was in trouble and he was stuck in the sand. Aw, I love good father-daughter relationships. At his mother’s behest, Seung-jo brings Ha-ni a cup of water, and Dad lets them talk, thanking Seung-jo for saving her.

Seung-jo chastises her for jumping in when she can’t even swim. She didn’t know what else to do since no one could hear her, and pouts that he’s still admonishing her for stuff when she’s still not feeling well. He sneers that she’s fine and she knows it, making her pout all the more.

Just then, they hear a scream from the campsite, as Duckie appears, blown up and battered. He doesn’t even explain himself before asking, “Where is my Ha-ni?”

It’s time for bed, so the guys go to the tent, as the girls plus Eun-jo head to the camper. Eun-jo stays quiet, but he starts to see Ha-ni in a different light, after her rescue attempt earlier today. Aw, I knew you’d come around, kid!

The dads chatter away in the tent, and Seung-jo sits outside by himself, playing the guitar. Oh, goodness. Here we go. Let’s not all faint at once, shall we, girls? No squealing! I will put my foot down if it gets out of control! Okay…not gonna lie. Kind of hot.

Duckie sits down next to him, begrudgingly impressed that he can play the guitar. Seung-jo asks if he came all this way just because of Ha-ni. Duckie says of course he did, since, “you’re a red-blooded male, and there’s no telling when you’ll turn into a beast.” HAHAHA. Even Seung-jo laughs at that.

Seung-jo: Why don’t you just move into my house then?
Duckie: Do you have an empty room? … Don’t you get any ideas around her. Just remember that I’m always watching you.
Seung-jo: You like Oh Ha-ni that much?
Duckie: Oh, hey….um…when you ask it so…directly…I just…want to make her happy—that’s my dream.
Seung-jo: You do that then. You fit well together, you and Oh Ha-ni.

The camera pans over to Ha-ni, who has heard their entire conversation. She sighs with her hand over her heart. Poor button.

Back at school, a list of universities goes up, and the girls start to stress about college entrance exams, hoping that there’s at least one school in all of Korea that they can get into. Ha-ni insists that they can do it if they work hard, and her friends decide to latch onto her 50th-place-scoring train, aka the Seung-jo Train. They come over to study with her, in the hopes of getting some much-needed help from genius boy.

They run into a problem they can’t solve (Number 1, ha) so they send Ha-ni over to Seung-jo’s room to get the answer. She refuses to go over there out of embarrassment, but they knock on Seung-jo’s door and shove her in there.

Ha-ni asks for his help on one problem, but he shuts her down cold. She argues that it’ll take him thirty seconds, but he says that even that would be a waste of time. Gah, I want to smoosh your haughty nose with a big ol’ dictionary! Ha-ni says that thirty seconds of his time means the rest of their lives to them, which even he can’t argue with, so he solves it for her, literally in 30 seconds.

They move onto the next problem…which leaves them scratching their heads again, so off she goes, back to Seung-jo. Listen, if you had trouble with Number 1, it’s usually not going to get any easier from there on out, if ancient memory serves. She keeps having to go back, later and later, until she’s getting him out of bed late at night. He screams at her to come back in fifteen minutes, so she goes outside to wait, and then he comes storming out and throws the book at them, shouting, “Now don’t step foot in my room anymore!” They look down to see that he’s filled out the entire book, and solved every problem. Heh.

At school the next day, the girls marvel at the solved problems, wondering how nice it would be if he’d explain some of his methods too. Ha-ni balks, asking if they’ve already forgotten what they had to go through to get these answers from him. Their classmates see the book and put two and two together, and all of a sudden, they all want in, on study sessions with Seung-jo. Ha-ni’s eyes pop out in horror, not knowing what to do. Duckie is the only holdout, and when even his lackeys join the group, he sighs and comforts himself with a little squirt of hairspray. Ha.

When Seung-jo comes home from school, he’s greeted by the entire 7th class, eagerly awaiting his tutelage. Seung-jo refuses right away, muttering under his breath at Ha-ni. But Mom grabs him and tries to talk him into it, while Ha-ni hides among her classmates, desperate not to raise Seung-jo’s ire any further. But he catches sight of her, and yells at her to come out.

Her friends pull her out and send her to the front, where she pleads with Seung-jo to teach them, just once. He’s totally exasperated with her, but she pleads so cutely. How could you say no to that face? C’mon!

Cut to Teacher Seung-jo, giving the entire class a physics lesson in his living room. Heh. The best part of this? Hey, I remember that Force = mass x acceleration! Cue trumpets.

After they leave, Ha-ni is in good spirits (especially since all she did during the study session is swoon over Seung-jo). But Seung-jo snaps at her attentiveness in his usual cold way. Mom sees this, and feels bad for Ha-ni, who starts drooping at the shoulders.

Just then, Mom gets a call, and a light bulb goes off in her head. She starts clucking, “Omona, omona,” over the phone and running around in a panic. She makes up an excuse to get everyone out of the house for dinner except Seung-jo and Ha-ni, and tells them to take care of dinner on their own. Aw, how cute is she?

She tells the rest of the family to meet at Ha-ni’s restaurant, where she confesses to leaving them home alone, because there are things between a man and a woman that can only be solved by “staying home.” Keh, keh.

At home, Ha-ni insists on cooking dinner, but of course burns things to a crisp. The look on Seung-jo’s face is pretty funny, as he tries to figure out what he’s about to eat. They scrap her “Hawaiian Locomoco” and Seung-jo whips up some egg-wrapped rice. Can this guy do everything? What’s the fun in a character who’s good at everything?

Ha-ni marvels at his cooking skills, but he simply says it’s because he’s smart. Ha-ni muses that Duckie must be smart too, since he’s a really good cook. The look on Seung-jo’s face spells j-e-a-l-o-u-s, as he snits that what Joon-gu makes isn’t cooking. Ha-ni goes on and on about how good Joon-gu’s food is, which just makes Seung-jo put his spoon down and take the plates away before she can even take a second bite. Ha.

Mom decides to haul the family to karaoke to prolong the kids’ alone time, and Ha-ni gets to studying. She smiles to herself that even though Seung-jo complains, he still helps her with all her subjects. She can’t find her English book with all her embarrassing scribbles about wanting to marry Seung-jo, and she realizes she must’ve left it in his room.

So she sneaks in while he’s sleeping to retrieve it. She almost clears the room without incident, but suddenly Seung-jo darts awake and grabs her wrist just as she’s about to leave. He takes the book as a flimsy excuse to come in here late at night, and pulls her onto the bed (omo!) and leans over her. He says that this must’ve been what she wanted when she came in, and repeats Joon-gu’s words that he’s only a red-blooded 19-year old. What’s he supposed to do? Haha.

Ha-ni panics, and Seung-jo leans in for the kiss…

COMMENTS

Well if that’s not a fantasy sequence I’ll give you my left foot.

I’m not the biggest fan of ending on a fantasy sequence, since either way the resolution is a disappointment, right? Regardless, it’s at least a better fantasy than the ones we’ve been getting, so that’s a plus. I mean, really, what teenager isn’t a raging bag of hormones?

I do really like the characters, and I like the world. There’s something very earnest and sweet about this drama that I like, because it’s not too cool for school, or trying to be so slick that it forgets to be about the human moments. That’s the appeal of a slice-of-life story, and I’m a fan of that type of storytelling.

That said, the episodic nature of the drama in this format (for television) isn’t really elevating it past delivering what’s expected. I keep wanting more—more tension, more expectation, more rise and fall. It doesn’t have to be a faked, manufactured tension. I mean organic stuff out of these characters’ lives, such as someone finding out about a long-harbored crush, or the effect of the rumor mill at a high school. These can be played for a little more dramatic oomph, even if the scale of the stories remains small.

In short, I want the show to take the elements it has, and then inject a few stakes in the game—even if it’s a heightened version of the stakes that we already have, such as pride, jealousy, etc. I hate to be a debbie downer about the ratings, but if there’s no TENSION, then people aren’t going to tune in to see what happens next. There’s a reason we call our dramas crack, right? From one addict to another, what’s a girl gotta do to get the good stuff?

I love Oh Ha Ni she's so adorable. How can you not notice a girl like that. And I'm mesmerized by Baek Seung Jo! Honestly he's just so hot! And I can finally see emotions. His smile and guitar skills are the best! This drama is turning out to be better than everyone has expected. I'm really fan of the story and the feel of the whole show is very relax and charming. I can't wait for the other episodes. The first one might not be the best but the following episodes are truly worth watching. Love it! Love it!

The first two episodes were slow, these were faster and had cuter scenes. I really prefer Ha Ni over Xiang Qin in ISWAK. Xiang Qin, although hilarious & endearing, was really annoying. I disliked that she continuously sacrificed her pride for Zhi Shu, 5 years is a long long time. And I also like Seung Jo better as well, KHJ is doing fine. Zhi Shu was so cold at times, and emotionless, while SJ's emotions are coming through already. I also like how SJ's side is also shown, unlike the TW version, where Zhi Shu's actual emotions weren't shown, which probably made me like him less. I like that we can see both sides, especially SJ's, which is different from the TW & Jap version. I'm already seeing a lot of good comedy, so it has potential. I also love the Mom character, she's just awesome! And I love how SJ's actual feelings are showcased through her pov. I think the show will get better, the low ratings are unfortunate, I think they deserve way way more than what its currently receiving. But my problem with KHJ is that for me, I'm still stuck on Jihoo, I haven't completely bought SJ's character yet. With Ha Ni I've already accepted her character because I haven't seen this actress in any other show, and her portrayal is quite good. So, I'm hoping I'll be able to grow more attached to these two characters like in Goong, or currently Gumiho, or some of my other fave dramas :)

Ah, they changed her character XD Seriously, sometimes she could be really frustrating in the other versions, only thinking about him, nothing else, never pulling stuff off she said she would (like forgetting him, etc.).

Anyway, I'm not going to watch this, but I think they're all very cute ^___^

Hi, there!

Thanks for wonderful recaps again!

I really enjoyed the 4th episode and looking forward to the next one! The ending was great but I really deemed that it would end like this! Darn it! Cuz now I can't wait for the wed :)
I can give you, guys, 99% guarantee that it wasn't her fantasy cuz I clearly remember anime and what happened next! But I won't tell you, hehe))) Moreover, I really can't imagine how koreans will present this scene?

During the last episode I deeply laughed several times! First, when SJ gave HN her sock and what happened next...then, of course, duckie (too much love him!) and the bike...That "BOOM!"was really hilarious! Also, when Ha Ni was cooking "Loco Moco" ;) And, obviously, the last scene!!!

Jun So Min is great! Kisses and hugs to her! She make me love her Ha Ni! Kim Hyun Joon is good as Seoung Jo. I love his acting more than Joe Cheng's in ISWAK. Maybe, cuz here he is more soft... I don't know...

I guess, I'm one of the minority of people who really don't feel the lack of plot and tension here...Probably, cuz I really like the storyline and remember what will happen...Believe me, if everything will be good, there will be some of tension and a lot of really toughing and sad moments! The begining of the anime was light too but then it became more "adultly"... To the extent that both characters grow, the plot changes too. That's why I love this drama! It's not about big exagerated problems but about ordinary people shortcomings and problems with which they face sometimes...

Anyways, let's see what korean show us! I really hope that they will be able to reproduce this story good and preserve it's special spirit!

Thanks for the comments, Girlfriday!
I must say I really enjoyed this one. I don't have any expectations, since I haven't seen the Taiwanese version, so maybe that's why I have a lot of fun with this drama. Maybe it's a bit "dumb" but it makes me forget my problems and it makes me laugh for a while. There was just the first episode I didn't like but the other three were very good. And Kim Hyun Joong is so good in this, it's really a pleasure to watch it.
I hope the other episodes will be as good as these ones.

first of all, great recap girlfriday!!!

im thinking on how you could possibly divide your leg to everyone who's gonna claim it after watching episode 5.

my stake is that its not a fantasy scene but dont worry i will not take my claim for your leg.

anyways, this drama have so many cute, fun, and touching moments that really suits for me. its a breather in a fast pace kdrama world.

i appreaciate that from episodes 3-4 they show cute little moments that indicates the changes in seung jo's feeliings for ha ni.

got to agree that KHJ playing the guitar was hot!
and i enjoy him being beak seung jo, which is a nice change from being a perfect prince in BOF.

JSM, as i mentioned in every recaps, she continues to be adorable and loving the subtle oh ha ni moments.

actually the whole cast are doing really well and so endearing.
they carry the show even the story has a loosen approach.

hope that they continues to improve.

excited for episode 5 and 6!!!

Hey I kinda like PK. I like the Korean interpretation. I don't need the tension to keep me going cos the plot wasn't complicated in the first place. Ariel Lim did very in the Taiwanese version, but I find people either like or can't stand her. OHN is really more enduring, less stupid. If I recall correctly, the last scene is Not a fantasy, but he was just teasing her. This is the first time I see a Korean mother supporting a girl who's less "worthy" in terms of intelligence and social status. Isn't this rare in Kdramas?
Arghhhh, I'm still waiting for SKS recaps! I'm curious what happened to female lead's dad. Why did the kingsend the professor to the school. I couldn't quite understand the subtitle as it wasn't clear...:(

Seunjo's poor mom! She was ready for a little girl. Then she got a boy, who turned out to be this cold, genius who isn't into all the fun things she like to do. Then she has another baby- maybe this time, the kid will be diffferent from seungjo! Then he turned out to be Seungjo #2! =*( After watching Asian dramas, korean mothers of sons are the most scary breed of women.

As for SKKS recaps- javabeans and girlfriday aren't beholden to continue recaps of SKKS on this website nor should they feel required to find guest recappers for it, so we should stop bugging/expecting them for it and stop being annoyed about how long it is taking for the SKKS recaps to get posted. I'm a fan of SKKS too and I don't mind rewatching the episodes multiple times to understand certain parts and waiting for the story to clear up anything I may have missed. I'm sure you can ask questions abt the series on soompi.com/forums---> http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=339160

SKKS has a ton of fans there.

Thank you for the recap.

PK started off as my guilty pleasure...but I think it has become a full blown addiction. I am now anxiously awaiting yours and JB's recaps...and Wednesday and Thursday can't come fast enough.

I love how sweet this drama is. I don't need the fake angst that usually comes in every kdrama that makes them draggy just to fill in 4 episodes so that you get an unresolved ending episode anyways.

I doubt the ending scene in Epi4 will be resolved. I read that Epi 5 was shot first.

Anyways...PK fighting!

Say goodbye to your left foot.

It's not a fantasy sequence. It's yet another set up for the two to get closer (not necessarily physically as one might expect/hope).

What I'm not too fond of is the initial set up since it seems more plausible if the entire family left them alone for a few days instead of going to dinner and do a little after dinner singing. It opens up the possibility that the two will be discovery "in the act" by 1) Mom, 2) Dad, or more than likely 3) Brother (who shares a room with the "beast" as Duckie put it)

Given how closely the series is following the Taiwanese series we shouldn't really be surprised to see what happens next between these two. The previews set up the college entrance examination and his dissatisfaction with his parents (both sets) "plan" for the two.

I'm just curious who they're planning on playing the "Zi Yu " role, is it the "mean girl" or is it someone else? She was a major hurdle for these two but still added a lot of "drama" to the story.

I don't think it's Hani's fantasy. I guess it will be

1) SJ just want to tease Hani and then, just let her go and Hani, of course will run away from SJ's room

or

2) His mom or SJ's brother will interrupt them and it will be awkward moment, lol

I didn't watch this drama for 3 reasons.
1. Because I'm addicted to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho
2. Because I already watched the Taiwanese version and loved it. (meaning, I already know the entire plot)
3. Because Haru2 subs haven't released their subs yet.

But, because I have a crush on Hyun Joong, I'll give it a try. Maybe during my semestral breaks. :) Or after Gumiho. :) But still, I don't think that this will surpass my love for the Taiwanese version. For me, Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng are still the best. I'm not sure if KHJ and Jung So Min will be able to match Ariel and Joe's chemistry. But I'm not closing my doors to this version. :) I'll give it a try when I have time to watch it.

Plus points for this drama: I love the OST. :)

i like this drama. i understand what you mean by the tension and over arcing storylines but i guess they are trying to stick to the manga. im concurrently watching playful kiss with the taiwanese version and i have to say im liking the cartoonish feel of the korean version. like girlfriday, i love everybody in this drama. all the characters are adorable. the mother, the little boy, duckie (how i love him... his dumbness is endearing!)... the two best friends (i want one set of those girlfriends please!), the dads, seung jo. but ha-ni is my absolute favorite. she is a pretty good actress.... i cant imagine that she is the same haughty princess gun wook killer in bad guy... i want to see more of her...

jung so min's acting is the best among three versions. what i like the most of her character is that she can actually do other things its just that she's not smart.
i was really irritated with the acting on the taiwan version for the character's portrayal was really nerve wracking for me. i cannot get through an episode without being irritated.
what i also like is that we actually get to see seun jo warm up to oh ha ni. unlike again in the taiwan version the guy suddenly becomes super duper sweet to the girl.
no offense to the other versions but Playful Kiss is more realistic about the two lead's love story.

Lol again "the korean version is the best" thing from kdrama addicts (remember crappy BOF) lol when The person who recaps says the drama is cute and all but nothing great and is not in "WOAH" with it and somewhat understand the atrocious ratings- when the show was overhyped like there is no tomorrow before airing. Yes there we can say "this is the best version thing"... What did the PD think ? Are not there good korean actors anymore ? Instead of to pick a good and charismatic actor, like the young man who acted in Giant, as the main lead male charactor, they pick KHJ to "recreat the magic of the mediocre BOF last year"...too bad 3% in the face (worst than Road No1) and reruns are not better.

i'm with you sistah :)

KHJ said in an interview that they'll be in college after ep 6. so, if my calculations are right, based on the manga and anime version, we'll definitely have our first "mischievous kiss" on ep 6 -- and that means its this thursday!!!

so hang on tight my friends, this drama will definitely bring on the steaks...errr, stakes. let's just hope that our boy can kiss as hot as he looks...because i've seen his previous kiss scenes and well, let's just say that he probably needs to learn a lesson or two from his friend lee min ho :)

Lee Min Ho is a hot kisser.. LOL

You have not seen the behind the scene kiss of KHJ and Han Chae Young in BOF?

I tell you this guy can kiss as good as he looks, it's just that the editing in BOF made it looked like it's just lips touching lips with no feelings at all.

I bet this boy can kiss! I am betting my life on it... He might have to tone it down for screen but in real life? I AM THINKING HE'S THE KIND OF KISSER THAT WOULD MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN...

After all, he played that BASS GUITAR in one performance of his WITH HIS MOUTH MIND YOU SO MAGNIFICENTLY!

And where else will you find an actor, who'd ask the director if he has to stick his tongue in his co-actress's mouth once the cameras are rolling? YESSIREEEEEEEEE!!! ONLY MR HOTNESS HYUN JOONG CAN DO THAT! (He did ask that circa BOF)

It looks like the series is steadily improving! I sort of wish that they should have left that Mean Girl out of the story. The Mean Girl isn't supposed to show up until college, right???

*sigh* I wish the director/writer didn't screw over the series during such a competitive time (sooo many good dramas out now) with that really mediocre 1st episode and a pretty-good-but-not-very-impressive 2nd episode.

I still like the TW version more. Joe Cheng's and Jiro Wang's acting is so much funnier and I miss the fun a lot in the Korean version. I also get it that in the Korean drama they only get so much episodes but I rather like the TW version slower development. I think the slower pace adds up to the "normal student life and love" the story is trying to portrait, which is something a lot of people(that are used to fast paced K-dramas) feel that it's boring. In the TW version I could really feel like those characters were real people with real lives. I had hopes the Korean version would maintain the humanity of it all and still give it a fast story structure but I guess I was hoping too much. Like GF wrote, the characters are the best part of the story. And that's why I'm still watching this show because I love the characters.

There’s a reason we call our dramas crack, right? From one addict to another, what’s a girl gotta do to get the good stuff?

Ah the cooking scene and guitar scene reminded me of We Got Married. I wished he cooked the Hawaiian Locomotion, but eggs and rice are easier to make. As adorable as Seung Jo is, he doesn't awe me like in the Taiwanese version. For instance, when he shows off his brains, he's usually reading something. Duckie would have won the relay race if Oh Han Ni didn't give it to Seung Jo first. But I like how he gets jealous, jokes more and does help Oh Han Ni.

Oh Han Ni is insanely adorable. The mom cracks me up with her matchmaking.

For the next episode, I think he's gonna just laugh it off and/or the family rolls in to the house. Sure love how they tease us viewers.

Thanks for the recaps!

I agree with you about the non-punch plot..hehehe but have you seen It Started With A Kiss?? It lasts for 30 non-punch episodes and yet still earned the title Taiwan's nation drama. I think it's the characters and the sincerity of the story itself.. It Started With A Kiss is my all time favourite drama, and I think SO FAR still the best out of the three adaptions (along with Itazura Na Kiss and Playfull Kiss).. Greetinss :)

People.. let's not give spoilers in the comments. I don't think there's that many of us who've watched the previous drama versions or anime/manga, and it musta been annoying to suddenly get dumped with the whole plot while you're skimming for comments.

Thanks for translating that beach conversation between SJ and JG. I wondered about SJ's dissatisfied face and Hani looking so forlorn after the last bit was said. Awww, SJ..

I think the drama's gonna pick up the pace after ep 6. If only MBC executives are patient lot like us. They're already babbling about dropping it from the re-broadcast schedule. I'm seriously worried about the fate of this drama...dunno what we can do about it since we live outside of Korea.

How I wish our (outside of Korea) following of the drama counts .. then ratings will shoot past Baker King.. LOL

I will bet my month's earnings, if PK ever airs in the Philippines, it would be a sure hit (so long as it is not in the past 9pm time slot) It's re-runs on weekends will still be watched.

I gotta love the "sock scene" at beach camp. Once BSJ handed OHN those twin stuffings, in a nanosecond, I was bursting into laughter. Lovely.

It's so cute how girls try so hard to cook as an art form. I have to give props to OHN trying to make the meat patty into a heart shape. Awww~ melts my thumper. Extra point, for OHN's hands signal of a "Hawaiian locomoco." Pahehe~

And the last but not gone forever, bed scene. What a tease! He's playing hard to get, AGAIN. He knows this phase in their cohabitation, he's got her wrapped under his pinkie, however..... (I love those tables getting turned around, don't you?)

I have been reading reviews and recaps in this website for months now and I think this is only my first post.

The pull of joining in the conversation about Playful Kiss and KHJ is just too much. LOL

Firstly, I am sorely disappointed that is has low ratings.

Second, I am a huge follower of Itazura na Kiss and I have been waiting for the Korean version since I saw that Hana Yori Dango had both Taiwan and Korean versions, it was the first movie that I wished they make a re-make. (I wish they re-make Hana Kimi too)

I am not disappointed or over the clouds with what Playful Kiss has offered up to now. It is a simple, funny story and I will always like it.

I don't have anything to complain abt KHJ's acting as everytime I see him, all I can imagine is that funny, 4D personality guy I saw in WGM and I can only smile.

I don't expect to be surprised as to how the story will span out as I have watched bout Japanese and Taiwan version. However, there is still that happy feeling of looking forward to the next episode.

i don't get it either. @_@ maybe fans also have trouble seeing Baek Seung Jo and keep seeing Leader instead?
in my opinion, people who still criticize KHJ's acting just can't get used to seeing him in a drama without thinking "it's Kim Hyun Joong of bad noobie acting in BOF fame". XP they're too aware it's him, so they're actually looking for mistakes and comparing his performance to real, serious, believable acting. but they should remember that this is a romantic comedy k-drama which has different rules, and most actors exaggerate their actions to fit the genre. but if KHJ acts like a real person in a rom-com, then he's too stiff, and if he acts like a rom-com character, then he's not natural. *SIGH* he just can't win!
honestly, i thought KHJ's acting in BOF was bad. -_- but he's really impressed me these past 2 episodes! he's a lot more natural and expressive. i think he's doing great.

When I watched Itazura na Kiss anime, it's a pretty given thing that if Kotoko/Oh Hani can't pull you into the dramaverse, there's nothing much Naoki/Seung Jo can do to make you like the story. I can identify with her character more than with Seung J's .. since I'm no genius. The struggles she has to go through at school were my struggles too. Her study scenes brought back bitter sweet memories...

I watched the previous drama versions of INK and I seriously couldn't understand why this perfect guy (obnoxious as he may be) would fall for the girl.. unless she's annoyed him to death and there's nothing else he can do but accept her. In fact the last episode of the japanese version shows how her irritating voice fills up Naoki's surrounding until he has to literally run out of the room. Eeeep..

But with Oh Hani, I could see why Seung Jo would be smitten with her. She got the dumb+cute+hardworkingly optimistic+obsessed fangirl acts down pat so far. I'm a fan of KHJ too but I'm in this drama now mostly for Jung So Min's character. So I kinda get what you mean, I think.. :P
