Coffee House: Episode 17

Hey, girlfriday here, pinch hitter in the Coffee House lineup. I couldn’t let the series end without getting a word in, so I’ll be providing you with the recap today, and rest assured, javabeans will be back for the finale.

Earlier in the run I liked the series but didn’t love it, mainly because one third of the triangle always felt off to me (I was not a fan of the bumblingly annoying Seung-yeon). But then that time leap actually changed how I felt about her character, and it effectively made all three characters level—which I totally dig.

PAGE 17 RECAP

We catch up with Ji-won as he gets the call from Jin-soo that he’s staying in Seoul after all. Needless to say, he does not look pleased. Eun-young in turn thinks about Jin-soo’s multiple-choice query about whether or not she wanted to hear the truth, and his toast at Ji-won’s party, for her to be happy.

Seung-yeon calls her to let her know that Jin-soo made it to the radio show, and Eun-young’s reaction is a great mix of happiness and trepidation. She turns on her radio, and when she hears his voice, she smiles to herself.

Ji-won calls to gauge her response, to see if she knows that Jin-soo is staying after all. She says she heard him on the radio, and Ji-won lets it go at that, too nervous to push it further at the moment.

Jin-soo finishes his radio segment with flair, and Seung-yeon thanks him for keeping his promise. Jin-soo asks if he’s worth respecting, if she still thinks his word is law. Seung-yeon answers yes, making him smile, then recoil in his trademark way. He says with a glint in his eye that it’s a lot of pressure to be so revered, and to have to keep all his promises. Cheeky. Oh, it’s so hard to be you.

He turns to leave after throwing her one last blue steel, but she calls out to him, asking if he’s going to stop running off without a word. She answers for him that she thinks he will, and Jin-soo genuinely smiles at her unwavering trust in him.

Jin-soo leaves and heads straight for Eun-young’s office, but her staff tells him that she’s gone for the day. She can’t be reached by cell because it’s broken (convenient), and she’s got family over at her place in preparation for the wedding. He tries calling, then ends up just coming over. Brave of you to walk right into a den full of wedding-crazed-ajummas.

They go into Eun-young’s room to talk, and she asks him where he disappeared to, and why he’s back. He tells her point-blank that he’s here to say something, and gets right to the heart of it:

Jin-soo: You told me to keep lying to you, but I want to know how you really feel. I came to confirm your true feelings. Can you really be happy with this marriage? I stayed because I have something to protect. The thing I want to protect is…your happiness. It doesn’t matter how. Whether it’s as a friend, a business partner, or as Ji-won’s wife, it doesn’t matter. I want you to be happy. So I came to ask you one more time. Is me letting you get married, and us splitting up really the road to your happiness? Am I turning my back on you, am I making a decision that neither of us wants? Do you really think you could be happy?

Somebody…please…CPR…

Is it because you’re a writer, or because you’re not a real human being that words like that come out of your mouth? It sure took you long enough to step up, but when you finally do, it’s just…perfect. Gah!

Eun-young struggles to speak, holding back her tears. She ekes out: “How am I supposed to know? I haven’t even tried.” She cracks a coy smile, and Jin-soo finally eases into a smile. They go back to their light banter, as Jin-soo asks if she can’t just have a sense about how things will turn out. She wonders if he’s got that kind of sense, why he’s been living the way he does. Touché.

Jin-soo counters that he’s an empiricist. He needs to be sure, otherwise he won’t take any action. The meaning isn’t lost on Eun-young, but she counters that nothing is for sure in this world, and that she never would have guessed he’d show up like this in two years. She sighs, “If only you had made me feel sure that you’d return…”

And with that, Jin-soo leaves. Aargh you guys and your non-answers!

Once he’s gone, Eun-young makes a decision and calls him. With the comfort of the phone to help keep her emotional distance, Eun-young gives him an answer: “Thank you, for asking me one more time. But…I might regret these words forever, but…now, in this moment…there are things that I must protect too.” Jin-soo answers that he won’t force the issue, but to tell him if she ever loses the certainty that she’ll be happy. “Even on the morning of your wedding.”

Well thanks for THAT. You could’ve at least pretended to avoid that cliché.

He says that he’ll do anything she asks, or whatever it takes, if it comes to that, and hangs up. She’s like, is this good or is this bad? Well, it’ll be good if your wedding dress has a slit or a full skirt for a quick getaway, bad if it’s that mermaid dress you could barely stand up straight in.

Seung-yeon doodles in her notebook that night with the birthday pen from Jin-soo, writing out “Oppaaa” and Jin-soo’s name with hearts. Keh, I died when she called him oppa all day. She takes out a globe to locate where the Galapagos Islands are (Who goes for “globe” before “internet”??) as she remembers Jin-soo’s advice to protect her idea and write it herself.

Eun-young’s staff goes out for drinks and happens to see Jin-soo going over a contract with an editor from a different publishing house. They approach him about it, and he says good-naturedly that they caught him, but not to tell Eun-young since it’ll make her feel bad. When pressed for the reason, he says that he suddenly needs a sizable sum of money.

Eun-young can’t sleep that night, and calls Ji-won for a quick chat. They’re actually really sweet together now, and I don’t fault her at all for choosing this path, because in the end there’s no right or wrong—she’s just making a choice and sticking to it.

Seung-yeon’s brother catches Dad making his best flirty eyes at his new lady crush, and Grandma drops the news that she thinks he’s dating. Both kids are like, whaaaa? Dad? Seung-yeon looks pleased, but Little Brother throws a tantrum.

Dong-wook shows up in his flashy red sportscar to throw a tantrum of his own over finding out the truth about Seung-yeon and Jin-soo. Seung-yeon apologizes and tells him that it’s over now, to which Dong-wook doesn’t miss a beat: “So does that mean I can officially ask you out on a date now?” Heh. Seung-yeon’s surprise blows me away. How could you not KNOW how this guy feels about you? For years now!

But this time, she at least has the decency to tell him the truth. She shuts him down, and tells him that it might be a lie that she’s dating Jin-soo, but her feelings for him are real. She admits that it’s always been this way, even long ago. The stricken look on Dong-wook’s face just says it all.

But Dong-wook, ever the optimist, asks if it’s okay if they eat meals and go see movies together, since you never know how life’s going to turn out. With confidence he tells her he’ll call her this weekend, and Seung-yeon muses with a smile that he’s much more well-spoken than before.

Dong-wook and Eun-young start their new café business, and Eun-young continues making preparations for the wedding. We’re finally at the week of the wedding, as Eun-young wraps up her work before taking her vacation. And this exchange with Ji-won? Adorable.

As she leaves the office everyone says they’ll see her at the wedding, and she answers over and over, “Don’t laugh at me.” Heh, it’s probably what I’d say too, but it’s also indicative of her feelings about marrying Ji-won.

She walks to meet Ji-won for dinner, but runs into Jin-soo on the street. She sees him from a distance and they both stop. Jin-soo looks at her with hope in his eyes, but Eun-young is overwhelmed by her feelings and can’t face him. She turns and walks in the other direction.

Sad. But that tells you everything you need to know about where her heart is, right? If she feels comfortable with her decision, why is she running the other way?

It starts pouring rain on her way to the restaurant, so she ducks into a phone booth to wait it out. Once inside, she realizes it’s the same phone booth where she and Jin-soo shared their first kiss. As it all sinks in, the tears start to fall. She flashes back to all their tense moments, leading up to their second kiss, and she cries, rain-soaked and heavy-hearted.

Seung-yeon comes over to Jin-soo’s to discuss notes for the last radio show, and Jin-soo tells her to leave her Galapagos notes there. She questions him, but he pulls the “respected and trusted teacher” card on her, and she laughs that she dug her own grave with those words.

She notices his new contract with a different publisher, and he confirms that he’s starting a new book, but doesn’t explain the why behind signing with a new house. Instead he poses like he’s doing a coffee CF, and what’s with the finger, dude?

And then? He actually pulls back and asks, “Have you ever seen a guy drink coffee so handsomely?” HAhahaha. She tells him to stop, but he teases that she’s the one person in the world who respects him, and he wants to be impressive around her. He really does mean it, even though he’s being funny about it, because you can tell he really took her words to heart and he’s a changed man because of them.

On the eve of the wedding, Jin-soo hears that Eun-young is sick from being out in the rain the other day, so he heads to her place with his doctor bag. Handy, that. He hooks up an IV and sends her friend for some medicine, and he sits at her bedside.

She stirs awake, shocked to see Jin-soo watching over her. He smiles and reminds her that he was a doctor, and asks how she’s going to get married like this. She says it’s all his fault that she’s sick. He’s like, me? Eun-young: “Yes, it’s because of you. Everything…it’s all because of you. All…all…because of you, you dog bastard. Dog trash. You son of a bitch.” A tear falls from her eye as she calls him all of those familiar insults.

He loses himself in the moment and wipes the tear away, his hand lingering on her cheek. After a moment, he pulls back and up goes the veneer, as he says she’ll be fine for the wedding.

He says that with her stubbornness, she’ll go through with the wedding, so with furrowed brow, he tells her what he’s planning. He’s going to interrupt the ceremony and run off with the bride like they do in movies. He congratulates himself on the awesomeness of that scenario—women love this stuff, he says. HA. I love the meta.

She knows he’s joking, but he continues, saying that it’s the only way. He wonders though, that if the bride runs away, there will be family members to face, and all her business contacts. But she says more importantly, it’s not something that Lee Jin-soo could pull off, in front of all those people. He wonders if that’s really true. I like how in joking about this scenario with their thinly veiled imaginary versions of themselves, they get to work out these lingering questions and issues.

Jin-soo decides that it’s true—he hates characters who always give public declarations of love when a private one will do. Heh. Me too! He thinks it’d be funny if he did it, but maybe it would ruin his image? Eun-young agrees it doesn’t suit him. She adds the salty grain of truth that the kind of behavior that suits him is sneaking in and sneaking out (of her life) without a word. Ouch.

She confesses that she’s having a hard time…even now. And she asks him to stop making it hard on her. Heartbreaking. He gives her one more smile and leaves, as she lets go another tear.

Jin-soo does his last radio show, and announces that his next book will take at least a year and a half, since he doesn’t have an idea yet (should he be saying that on national radio?), and when the DJ laments not hearing from him for that long, Jin-soo says that actually, they’ll probably be sick to death of him since they’ll be seeing his face all the time. It’s cryptic, but what isn’t, from this guy? The DJ takes it in stride.

As he leaves, Seung-yeon thanks him, and he double-checks that her respect for him is still intact. Heh. He hands her the Galapagos notebook, and when she opens it, it’s full of red marks from Jin-soo. Aw.

She runs after him to thank him, and he complains that there was so much to correct that he thought his arm was going to fall off. She’s totally moved, and he takes yet another opportunity to ask if she’s overflowing with respect for him. He makes sure to add that she’d better hold onto that respect. I sort of love his obsession with this. He’s like a dog with a bone.

She asks if he’s going straight to the wedding, and he jumps when she mentions that she’s going after work. He tells her not to go. She demands to know why, and he says, “Because your respect for me will end up in the trash. If I think about that, it makes my heart hurt. If you ever feel your respect for me taking a dive, you read that notebook until it goes back up, okay?” Haha. I’m totally getting a Hwang Tae-kyung point-system vibe from this, and I love it.

I also love that he’s planning to do something so outrageously embarrassing that he doesn’t even want Seung-yeon to witness it, for fear of losing face in front of his one and only disciple.

It’s time for the wedding! My goodness, is one of them a Kennedy? There are as many photographers as there are guests. On the drive over, Eun-young is so out of it that she can’t focus at all.

Jin-soo talks to the other publisher on his way over, planning to meet at the wedding to sign the contract. The publisher worries about all the reporters, but Jin-soo says it’s fine—the more, the better. Kyah!

Ji-won enters the ceremony, and I’m dying…who walks down the aisle like this? Eun-young, on the other hand, makes her way down the aisle like this…

Jin-soo arrives, with heavy steps and heavy sighs. He slowly puts his hand outside the door to the banquet room, then turns and walks away, pausing to look wistfully back at the door. Then, as his expression changes from sad, to a smile, to a fighting growl, he shouts out: “Aja-ja-ja-ja-ja!” and runs full speed ahead at the door. AHHahahaha…I seriously died laughing at his pre-run fighting call.

Then he rushes into the banquet room, still growling out loud. Oh my god, this is so funny. Eun-young goes into shock as soon as she sees him, recalling his jokey threat to run off with the bride.

And Jin-soo starts running right at her, but zooms past, headed straight for the publisher he’s supposed to meet. He starts a knock-down, drag-out brawl ALL OVER the wedding, and basically pummels the guy for all the cameras to capture. We get a flashback wherein Jin-soo purposely sought out this guy because he was known for making shady deals.

Ji-won realizes what Jin-soo is doing and so does Eun-young, but it’s too late to stop it.

Okay, THAT was your big plan? My, my Lee Jin-soo. I thought maybe you had grown up in this episode, but that stunt totally took you back to first grade. What can I say? You did a stupid thing, and you’re going to have to pay the consequences. At least it was thoroughly laugh-out-loud funny. I’ll give you that.

While some might find Jin-soo’s initial declaration to Eun-young a sort of cop-out, it was the first time I really loved his character. It’s my own personal inclination, but I’m such a huge fan of the grand gesture that’s all about the other person, and not yourself. So when Jin-soo finally confesses his feelings in that roundabout way, he does it in the most respectful manner possible, by simply offering up his role as Eun-young’s happiness-supporter, rather than some pushy guy who tells her that she needs to choose HIM to be happy. He trusts HER to know what’s best for herself, and he doesn’t push when she says no. I love how realistic that is, and to me, that’s as grand a gesture as they come.

But then he blows it all with the wedding stunt, so then I’m back in the Jin-soo-is-an-idiot camp. I want him to get his happy ending, and I have no doubt that he gets it, but I hope there’s some serious remorse on the plate before he gets his girl.

As far as Eun-young is concerned, it’s a little disappointing that it’s going to take Jin-soo’s disruption to wake her up out of this zombie-wedding march. I was hoping that in giving her more agency in the beginning of the episode (which I loved), that she’d come around to a mature decision on her own. But there’s still room in the finale for her to face her heart, so I’m sure we’ll get a satisfying conclusion. We’d better, or I’ll hurt someone. That means you, Show.

Just a reminder: please respect the NO SPOILER policy. Some of us (*ahem, me*) have NOT seen the finale, and thus do not want to know what happens, ON PAIN OF SLOW AND EXCRUTIATING DEATH. Don’t think I won’t do it. I know a guy.

@47 ...

The fact that he learns more from SY than EJ is a telling that despite his love for EY, he didn't grow with her or learn from her.

It's not about being a real man in front of the person you love, it's about being comfortable enough to be vulnerable and to open yourself to someone else and let them see you even in your weakest... which aside from the one event that boundEY to JS has not been anything. Instead, JS has repeatedly been exposed to SY even if he doesn't want to lose his cool facades.

Not that I think JS is right for SY, I just think that your indication that SY was not of an influence to JS and his relationship is discrediting the character.

@ 49 and 38

I feel ya both. Seriously... one episode left and I'm still caught hung and dried. I'm still completely lost at the relationship really budded, how JS got over his issues.. and what's the use for DW. I'm still not understanding why there only appears to be one fluent characterization growth for the entire drama (SY) and schitzo JS peeping common sense here and there.

I haven't seen the last episode, but I can't imagine everything being tied up in a knot and bow and delivered in a satisfying way. That's not to say I can't wait for this drama to be over. I think I've exhausted my patience with it... and disappointment has seeped in too much. The writing and direction of this drama was all so promising... and as I near this ending roller coaster, all I could possible conjure is that it must have been some sort of trip for me to last this far. -RANT-
I mean.... I don't know how JS/EY fell in love, I don't know how the issues got resolved, or seriously what's the issue outside of timing. Is time suppose to be the bad guy here? And then, why have all the other characters if budget can be saved with really just JW/JS/SY/EY... I mean, not one supporting case was significant..... I feel like I jumped into someone's life and exited it 2 years after.

ZILCH!!!

Girlfriday you're the best! Thanks for the recap!

I must agree thou that the exchanges between EY & JS would have suffice for me as an ending and nothing grand like beating the crap out of someone...who gave him the right!?

As per JS I like that his very intelligent and but emotionally flawed. I know a lot of guys like him in my lifetime. Whew its scary when a guy is flawed like JS and is intelligent they fool you right to your skin! But im trully convinced that KJW played his character well, like he always does! I really like him in this episode since he became honest, little too late but atleast he was giving hints to EY the whole time and playing skipping rope with her feelings.

As per EY good for her bringing her self all the way down to the aisle! Well atleast we know she was willing to stuck it up the rest of her life. There's divorce anyway so I guess easy exit from JW. But it showed that both of the are lying their whole lives. Well we all lied maybe half of ours but having said that I would not drag it all the wa to the aisle infornt of my family. Whew good ridance!

Enjoyed this Episode a lot and will be looking forward for Episode 18.

1 of the problems for certain people to 'accept' EunSoo is the lack of their background. There's no first meeting, nor any certainty about their feelings in the past, we just know they're friends, he was married divorced to her best friend, he introduced her to his senior. Did their love start after his wife die? etc & etc That's probably why they say EunSoo can't be the one. I say they just need a push from outside. On my part I don't see the importance to know exactly how they fell in love. From the flashback, it's clear they were close and had been through the worst of each other's life. It's natural some deep bond has been growing between them without themselves realizing it. They know the other is important to them and they'd do anything to protect him/her but because of their heavy past they don't dare to think about other possibilities, aka they're in love with each other. CH started like that and SY's entrance has triggered everything. I argue when some say JS is more comfortable with SY and opens to her more. We have to remember the whole issue with JS is his hiding feeling for EY. He has been covering it with layers of lies because he thought it's just impossible. But despite that his caring for her sake still show through out the series. You have clearly two different persona of JS when he's with SY and EY because the two relationships are not the same. He needs both in order to advance. He couldn't show his 'weakness' to EY why? if EY was just a friend of 10yrs then sure he would share with her all his problems, BUT the thing is he has feelings for her and that to him it is impossible that it'd work. Hence all those pretenses, disappearances, lies all those years, because of those feelings they couldn't be honest with each other. SY was like the wake up call, she made him see the problem with another perception. That's her importance in this series. EunSoo are your normal people who have flaws and only see things how it is, they both need a push. It's how it works to me, you can't live alone in this world.

It's not like he was intentionally trying to show SY his weakness. The point was that she was his secretary and frankly speaking, he didn't care what she thought of him. That's why he could behave however he wished in her presence. There was no need to put up a front. But now that she's told him she respects him and he wants to maintain that respect, what does he do? He told her not to attend the wedding because now he doesn't want her to see that part of him.

Surely, we can all see what the point is here.

I'm not trying to disregard SY's role in his life. Both of them have learned from each other. I'm not saying that she's not now an important person to him. But just because they've both learned from each other doesn't mean that she should be the person he ends up with. Many of us have more than one friend in our lives. Even if you have a spouse, that doesn't mean he or she is the only one that can influence your life.

However, for many years, EY has been his rock. And she was there for him at his lowest point and took care of him for years. And even though he was being an idiot, he always knew he could rely on her. There are so many things that EY can do to and for JS, especially at his most difficult times that SY will never be able to handle. And that's simply because they are different and he has different relationships with both women.

But yes, there are loose ends that the writers never addressed but it does baffle me how anyone could have watched episode 16 and expected JS to fall for SY. It was clear that he was having a hard time at JW's birthday because of his feelings for EY and despite SY's kisses in episode 15, it was always clear that he's never been attracted to her. I'm not getting how people missed this in 17 episodes so far and were expecting some kind of illogical ending.

@23 Sukispop Totally agree with you here.

"While I found the scene of Jin-soo’s wedding crash pretty hilarious, I also found a bad taste in my mouth when I considered his actions and the impact of those actions. His objective may have been altruistic, but his actions to achieve it were just plain wrong. That publisher may have been a really bad and shady person, but attacking him without provocation and beating the crap out of him was despicable. Ji-won was a bad choice as a husband for Eun-young…but Eun-young accepted him after he satisfied her conditions in that 2 year period. He may be an arrogant jerk and bully who insists on always getting his way, but he didn’t deserve what happened."

Some are disappointed that after all the hype about their EY and JS's past..the last episodes didn't address THE past and most of the flashbacks focused just on the "two years" ago, not ten. I guess it means, like what the director kept on expressing, that "regardless" of whatever past, the present is MORE important. We've all been dropped haphazardly into the MIDDLE part of EY and JS's love story. Or at least, SY has been, so it's understandable we (thru SY's eyes) weren't privy to all their (EY & JS's) Firsts (eg, meeting, When they fell in love which for all we know happened at different points in their lives, etc.) The entire story revolves from SY's point of view, NO OTHER character expressed their thoughts that much. It would have been good if we knew from episode 1 that, in some way, this series was sort of SY's memoir: her memories about her "first" love and "heartbreak" but we didn't. So I don't understand all the bashing about which character should end up with whom. Let SY tell her story, I say.

@nuffsaid

JS stopped the wedding because he wanted her to be happy. That is what you want for the person you love. He didn't force his interpretation; EY's turmoil and unhappiness were clear. I can see why you think it would set a bad precedent for him to act according to the idea that her true wishes are contrary to her words, or to assume that he knows what is good for her, or to choose a path for her. In some ways, that's a fair point, but JS did not force her into anything, or make any decisions for her. What he did was buy her more time and a second chance.

What would you rather have had him do? EY was not going to stop the wedding. As time went on, she looked more like a death row inmate nearing her execution than a bride nearing her wedding. He saw the tears and the sickness and the dread, and he also saw her willingness to sacrifice her future happiness. Should he have watched her walk down the aisle to a life that would leave her miserable?

EY absolutely she SHOULD have valued her own happiness enough to end the wedding, but the reasons she didn't have been pointed out many times in the drama and by people commenting here. The expectations of her friends and coworkers, her future plans, her own commitment, the happiness of her fiance and her family... She didn't believe that she could in good conscience throw all of this away, and I find that completely realistic. She made her decision, and while it is easy for us to see that it was the wrong one, that her happiness was not worth sacrificing, it was not easy for her to see that.

JS did not make her choose between himself and JW in front of her wedding guests. He did not drag her off to marry himself instead. He merely stopped her wedding so that she could see it was not an inevitability, and to give her the time to make the decision for herself.

@ 54 Jane

I can't even begin to get into the illogical plotline and the criminal lack of plot for the supporting cast without a spoiler so I will bite my tongue and hold back on that rant until Ep. 18 recap comes out!!

As much as I like the EY character and JS pairing, I fully agree with what maddy (51) said that for the EY/JS couple, it just felt like the viewer was simply thrown in for a two year period and then yanked back out again. They don't necessary need to make a huge deal about what happened in the past but I am sure that it would help for the rest of us to get a better grasp of their relationship and therefore root for them. In contrast in SY/JS relationship, there has been continuous progress in their friendship and emotional attachment which makes it logical if JS moves on/ progresses in his life with her and not EY. It doesn't even have to be a concrete relationship (because that wouldn't quite make sense) but a time slip and a hint will end the drama on a nice, logical note. Plus, if they don't make clear the circumstances around the death of JS wife, then it will always hang a great big question mark to our interpretation of the Ey/JS relationship

Having not seen 18, my interest since ep 15 & 16 has sinced dropped and I'm hard pressed at this moment to be bothered to watching the end (and seriously annoyed if they don't resolve some of the issues that some of the previous comments mentioned). I, for one, hope for an happy, fun and ambiguous ending. Everybody happy? (What are the chances... )

PS @ 49 and 38 and 51. That corner is looking mighty crowded at about now.

@ LL and nuffsaid

I can see both your points, but I think it is unfair to say that JS 'stopped her wedding so that she could see it was not an inevitability, and to give her the time to make the decision for herself'.'

EY has had plenty of time, weddings are not instantaneous. She has had time and time and more time to come to her senses. She has rejected JS more than once. She knows her feelings but probably feel that she was in way too deep to stop it then...

But the argument I think is whether JS should have taken that tactic. In this day and age and with all the buildup of EY being a strong, independent, career woman- cannot make up her mind and needs JS to step in and save her from her potential mistake. Poor JW.

@Meix2

My point is that of course the wedding is not instantaneous, or inevitable, but EY truly thought it was an inescapable obligation. When I said "give her time," I meant the time after proving that the wedding was not inevitable. Before he broke up the wedding she was just in countdown mode.

EY is absolutely a strong and independent woman, and she did make up her mind, she just didn't value her own happiness enough.

I guess for me there is a world of difference between JS stopping the wedding by causing a disruption, and stopping the wedding by stealing the bride.

EIther way, poor JW. Although I really do think it would have been worse for him with the second scenario too - not only losing his love, but losing her in front of everyone would have been humiliating.

The final scene in this episode is not without its problems, but I just don't feel, like some seem to, that the moment destroyed JS' emotional development or EY's independence or strength.

I didn't mean to set up a false dichotomy here. I don't think it had to be either or; I'm just contrasting the scenario JS talked about when EY was sick, and what he actually ended up doing.

We already had a time slip and Jin Soo came back to propose to EY. No amount of time will make him interested in SY. I don't know if it's because people are so used to kdrama conventions that when a man compares a woman to a table or pencil sharpener, they still somehow expect him to fall in love with her?

After the time slip, Jin Soo still made it clear that SY wasn't his type. I think you should all watch episode 14 at the part JW says that SY and JS are a perfect match. Please study the look JS gives SY at that moment, almost as if to say, "Not in this lifetime."

This drama was never headed towards a SY/JS romance, regardless of what SY or their shippers might have hoped for because JS always made it clear he wasn't going to develop those feelings for her.

As for the wedding interruption, are we forgetting what Jin Soo did to Ji Won in episodes 3 and 4? Do you remember that he stuffed SY into a suitcase? This is Jin Soo we are talking about.

And EY is the type to keep her promise and JS knows that. As we know, a strength can also be a weakness. She keeps to her word even though it might be detrimental to her. But who knows if she would have been able to say "I do?"

EY also pretty much told JS that if she'd known that he'd be returning to her, she wouldn't have decided to marry JW. So this is pretty much all JS's fault. So even if you don't agree with his methods, this was his way of taking responsibility for ending the wedding.

Not every story has to fit each viewer's needs. I think the drama did drop the ball on really explaining the past. It was almost like they got tired of filming the flashback scenes. They started off well then kind of lost their way.

However, this isn't a drama about a couple meeting then slowly falling in love and not every story has to follow this formula to be fulfilling. In this drama, we already have a couple who've known each other for a while who either are unaware or in denial about their feelings for each other. It's a different story and one that clearly doesn't suit everyone's needs which is okay.

But that doesn't make it unbelievable.

I gotta say the wedding scene is EPIC!! lol. I didn't see it coming at all.. At first I really thought JS was gonna runaway with EY, then I imagined if they did that they might end up like Ben & Elaine in "The Graduate".

This drama is really good in twisting all the clichés. And I love that!! I also looooove EunSoo pairing since episode 1, but I do wish that the drama can give more details about their past relationship.
I really want to know how they started knowing each other and developed that special feelings. It doesn't have to be on flashbacks, just a hint of word would be enough (like how JS said that he was the one who introduced JW to EY). But I guess it is just made for open interpretations (or maybe not?).

Anyway, I think JS is the best male lead character that I have ever seen in a k-drama. He's entertaining and frustrating at the same time, with some level of depth, witty and totally unpredictable.

@ Jane

<> Never say never!! More unlkely pairing have happened in K-drama land!

<> I'm afraid this is simply untrue. The whole plot and the rollercoaster ride was based on the 'who's he gonna end up with' question... If it was indeed true that there were no doubt who he was eventually be paired with then half of the viewers/ shippers would have abandoned the drama ages ago. I'm not arguing with you, Jane. Nor am I 'shipping' for SY in particular. I'm only dissapointed in the WAY the story was presented in the last 6 or so episodes, which I have a feeling is mainly misdirection from the PD/ writers to keep us ALL interested up until the last possible minute without much progression to the plot. Alot of the cast/ plotlines were underused so that there is this ambiguity. For example, if SY wasn't meant for JS from the start, then they really should have given DW's character more depth and more meaningful relationship between them. As it stands at Ep 17, DW drifts in and out without much point or reason.

<> Yep. I agree. However, in dramaland there was suppose to be a 2+ years time gap and time for JS's soul seaching and maturity. Way to go, JS, if all you've come back with is a new haircut and earring.

At first, I thought the last scene was really jarring. But I agree with @58, it was the only way for him to protect EY. He knew she was unhappy, but he also knew she would go through with the wedding no matter what. In their earlier conversation, he refers to his own mistake in getting married. He doesn't want her suffer the way he did. It's well-established that JS often acts insane, so in that sense the fight is not completely out of character. At the same time it represents a breakthrough for him, because in the beginning he avoided publicity at all costs.
But it still felt a bit forced to me, somehow.

@57 I think there was a conscious decision not to include more flashbacks in this part of the series, because JS has moved past the trauma and stress that was preventing him from being with EY.

As for the bitterness, I feel like that has more to do with expectations of what would happen based on the conventions of Kdramas, than with CH's internal logic.

This episode sealed the ending, I don't even want to watch it. In this epi, It may not be the usual barge-in-and-runaway- with the bride scenario but it's pretty close to it. I think it's clear by now who's end up with JS which would be disappointing for me. Will there be any chance other ways? open ending would be great.

Again, I say, only SY's character I can fully appreciate( ok ..and Dong Wook's cuteness and perseverance). It may seems selfless for Jinsoo to do what he did in the wedding, but like what Girl Friday said, he's back to first grade or even worse. I love JS character especially when he's with SY but his forward-backward growth(if you can say it like that), it just annoys me. And this act was one of the hated ones. His fighting call and running was hilarious but the beating of the man who doesn't even know why JS was so upset like that, it was too much. He only needed to disctract and prove a point. No need to go that far.

And EY, she was the same then and now, didn't grow as a person, didn't change at all. No change that. She actually went backwards since she chose to continue to lie. If they came open then, there would have been plenty of ways to just quit with the wedding and find their happiness. It would also save JW some trouble he had to go through. If EY did consider JW, she knows that in the long run, she will never be happy with him, thus making him sad also. As independent, strongminded she is, she would have save JW from that. and it's worst for their family when they evetually know what was behind all the fighing facade. EY was selfish in a way. She wanted JS to continue to lie because she's afraid that the truth will make herself difficult, and she's afraid to face it. She just had to go along with flow. SO Jinsoo had to revert to what he done.

Another thing,as pointed out in previous comments, the back story of JS/EY is just soooo hanging, it's just not good foundation to how they portray JS/EY's characters who love each other deeply. It's just lacking. Are we still getting some answers?

And can I say, I am okay with PSY and her acting until her face is focused close up-it's just like-- blank. HEJ did a fantastic job as SY. JS? He's amazing. I also pity JW.

@ CHaddict: i think you should change your name to Eunjungaddict instead.
and if you can only appreciate Seungyeon, that's fine for you, but keep in mind that this drama isn't 'tailor-made' for you or any other particular viewers. n what's with the hate on Eunyoung, it makes SY/JS shippers sound plain bitter, i think Park Shi Yeon did a great job at her character, and i hardly see complaints from recappers/viewers as well. just because you don't like the ending, PSY becomes a poor actress? *blinkblink*
and Eunyoung selfish? she even lived in lies to accommodate to Jinsoo for years, just for him to keep surviving, and that makes her selfish? he told Jinsoo to leave when obviously she loves him, just because he said she'd remind him of his past, that's selfish? so the issue with Jiwon? she did intend to marry him, before Jinsoo came back, in keeping with her promise to Jiwon, and she didn't even cancel the wedding, didn't it occur to you that it could be because she's worried about Jiwon's feelings if she just discarded him once Jinsoo's back? she also considered the families and people around them. she's a grown up woman in her thirties who thinks realistically, n not just let herself swept away by romantic fantasies although she does have 'em. poor Jiwon? well, why not blame it on karma? what he did was worse. Eunyoung was wrong for thinking she could go through with the wedding when obviously she couldn't, but she still wanted to try, to satisfy everyone who are harbouring hopes n expectations on her(with the wedding n all). a fool right? for thinking about those people and not herself? i guess that's because she's too selfish huh? *coughs* she's has her own flaws, but so are other characters, and that's what makes them likable, because when they have flaws, they're closer to the real human beings.
and it looked like you didn't understand Jinsoo enough to notice why he did that to the man at the wedding. he intentionally did that. to cause a big scene that would stop the wedding. i guess if it was Seungyeon's wedding to another man, n JS made the same riot, you'd like his actions better?
sorry if i sounded harsh, i hate seeing such a good drama n good characters being degraded just because there are viewers who are not happy with the direction the story's going.

@68/Rachel
ahh, you gave me a new possible insight, it could actually be a conscious decision to get rid of the flashback after the two years, because Jinsoo is a new man who doesn't need flashbacks anymore. because now he knows what he really wants. for the present n future that is.
and to whoever complained about the past n bla bla, this drama isn't titled 'The Tragic Past of Lee Jinsoo & Seo Eunyoung'. so, how about getting over it, i'm glad it's not so muddled with the past, because it's the present that's important, and Jinsoo have finally come to realize it, albeit almost a little too late because Eunyoung's getting married.

and i'm astonished at people saying this drama sucks at episode 17? *blinkblink*.............wow.

anyway, thanks for the recap girlfriday. greatly appreciated^^.

(sorry if this post sounded somewhat angsty/sarcastic, i think i've just had too much... glad i could take some out of my lungs..phew)

Jane i love you and agree with everything you've said. that's why i never really have understood why JS/SY shippers are SO adamant about their chemistry and how it would only make sense for him to go to her. i guess some people can't get around the fact that you can learn and grow with friends of the opposite gender without needing to date or crush on them.

about the "roller coaster" about who he was going to end up with... i only ended up feeling that way because of OTHER VIEWERS who were so confident he would change and fall for SY. if i watched this drama with NO interference (freaking viikiii discussion that i didn't know how to turn off) then i would have never considered SY, at all. i appreciate her how as a character but that doesn't mean i felt she was in anyway a match for JS relationship wise or that the would ever happen. but i'm going to agree with that clockwatcher said on soompi and say SY got too much airtime for this drama.

"I agree with this. SY's character was given far too much screen time. JW was also there for comedy relief but his role in this drama was clear as day. SY's character honestly, if it was to be the "bridge," it was like we had 3 hours of randomness just to show 1 minute of her acting as a bridge. They really could have done a much better job solidifying her role. There are some episodes where JS/EY had maybe a total of 5 minutes (like ep 12 and 13) and even if part of this drama was to show JS/SY's relationship evolve, there were far too many times where it stalled. And it was just the same thing over and over.

This is why for a long time, there was a debate about the purpose of her character in this drama in the first place. I think the PD could have done a much better job making her role more cohesive with the rest of the story. Plus as you said, it was at the expense of the "rich" plot. That plot could have been so much deeper than it was but instead of focusing on that, we had so much randomness with the JS/SY story.

yit, lol, you read Honeymoon? Lol... why are you reading the unfinished one? Well, I kinda put down my fanfic writing pen. lol... this year, I just decided to try to finish the stories I dropped like three years ago and when I'm done it's over for good. LOL. I haven't really thought about a CH fanfic to be honest but I don't know... lol. I'll think about it. If a plot comes to me, I'll let you know. Thanks for reading that story and enjoying it (even though it's incomplete). But I say if you want to read any others, I recommend you read the completed ones since you won't be left hanging. :sweatingbullets: Thanks, hun.

angelica, yeah, PSY and HEJ seemed to have developed some kind of friendship. I think PSY tends to become good friends with her male costars but who knows what's going on this time around? lol... actually, I'm secretly rooting for her and that her barista boyfriend (the one who was desperate to be a manager). lol And KJH and HEJ would be hilarious - at least the shippers will he happy. Although I won't mind him with that cute barista girl... the one who told JW that EY had left the wedding hall. See? I want everyone to be happy - even minor characters. lol.

I'm also lamenting the lack of BTS in this drama. That really adds a lot to the enjoyment factor :D"

@56 CH

I agree with you. I also felt that the story was revolving around SY's point of perspective. Remember her quote from the first episode "this was the beginning of my love story" something along those lines. Sadly, it felt that the writers were so intent in trying to confuse the viewers that they had only utilized SY as a tool instead of allowing her character to at least have a decent development in the Romance Department.

Maybe I'm being bias but if the intention was for EY to end with JS (from the very beginning) then I think the writer should have had the decency to allow SY to have a romantic development with another character, such as the manager.

@Jane

I think it's understandable that people are disappointed at the ending. It's not that people dislike the JS/EY pairing (although I do bec. there was so much drama in their relationship but that's just my preference...I generally prefer happier moods, of course that doesn't mean I don't appreciate relationships with depth and drama) but I think it's normal if people were disappointed that he didn't end with SY or at least by himself. It seems to me that a lot of people had been cheering for SY from the very beginning of the story. She is after all, the underdog in this drama. People get carried away with cliche traps...and I think the writers' were so intent in trapping viewers in those net traps so they could dramatically make them fall in an abyss of disappointment at the end (reality face palm).

Cliche Net Traps:

1) SY is the underdog

2) We meet her family, both DW and JS also had interactions with them. I mean there was even an instance where her father tells JS to take care of SY. Foreshadowing...unfortunately NOT.

3) JS constantly (whether intentional or unintentional) causes SY to ignore the manager. It felt at the very beginning that the writers were trying to pair both SY and the manager (there were a few moments in the beginning of the story and then it totally dissipated as the story developed. For me...(at least) it felt as though it was a preparation for a triangle (alas I was wrong...irritating net traps).

4) There were instances where I felt that EY was somewhat like an antagonist. Remember when she was starting to get jealous of JS/SY interactions. She was saying some nasty things about SY...(specifically in the "I tripped in the shower naked" scenes and the "I'll get you in trouble SY" scenes where SY was almost fired by JS).

5) SY constantly waits for JS while he ignores her. Remember the scene where SY kept waiting for JS (she didn't even leave the spot despite wanting to go to the restroom). Foreshadowing? NOT.

6) Also...as mentioned by a viewer before...The ring fits SY's ring finger...Oooooh...Symbolism...sadly NOT.

I agree with @66 Meix2, if the intention from the very beginning was to make JS end with EY...there shouldn't have been so many cliche net traps, people are bound to get caught. Also, I don't think it's really that surprising if people believed that JS was going to end with SY. It's probably unconventional but I don't think it's highly implausible.

Pardon my opinion, but this was a disappointing drama for me. I would have preferred it if JS ended by himself. Of course...I wouldn't have been so bitter if the girl I was cheering for had a much decent ending. As my younger sister said, "This stunk. I don't care about JS/EY...if their bound to be together let them fly in their own world and partake in their passionate romance..I don't care. I just want SY to end with someone and be happy. Why must she have a one-sided romance. I feel sorry for her character. JS needs to stop interrupting her budding romance."

@Everyone

I think people need to chill out. It's just a drama...life moves on. People need to stop bashing on each others opinion. There isn't a clear antagonist in this drama, thus people are bound to dislike either EY or SY. People need to respect opinions and not take them to heart.

@chris,
I think the writer's idea of trapping the viewers in cliche was both a "good" thing and a "bad thing. "Bad" obviously because those viewers who got trapped will ultimately fall into an abyss of disappointment. However, as JB had pointed out in the early episodes, the writer has already been making twists on certain cliche plotlines...so I'm surprised that there are so many people that didn't expect the dissappointment (or maybe they were, but the internet writing makes it diffcult to tell).

Yes, certainly the open-ended discussion between sort-of responsible adults -- well, all right, one anguished man-child and a grown woman with complex choices to make -- would probably have been the most true-to-life and subtly devastating ending to this series... But it's a trendy drama, even if it's got some more grown-up elements to it, and those don't go in for subtle, eh. But you're so right, girlfriday -- love is about being the caretaker of the other person's happiness, like a gardener preparing the soil for a plant; grand gestures of the sort Jinsoo makes are rarely about preserving happiness in that sense.

personally i think the writers are awesome with a great insight into the complex human psyche. i believe that since episode 1, JS & EY were always in love albeit denied & unacknowledged for the longest.

IMO EY was always the steadfast solid as a rock character while JS was the flake which was understandable for he was wallowing in sorrow & guilt for the death of his ex. i believe JS did the outrageous at the wedding to give EY an timeout moment while absolving her of all blame & responsibility - a very brave, selfless & uncharacteristic act for sure. at the sametime, he's demonstrating the her the "new & improved" JS. nice...!

i like the new JS for he's finally the man which steps out to plate.

ps:its my 1st post here & its only my 2cents so i hope to not ruffle any feathers to the gurus. thxs to GF for the awesome recap & y'all have a good one ;)

i think the writers did a great job, steering the drama this way and that, and bringing out the complexity of Jin Soo's character. actually all the lead character developments were pretty spot-on.

EY, and SY maturing (I was in the same camp that didn't enjoy the 'little girl' SY initially .... there was no way I could see them remotely together until she matured)

i feel sorry for SY but i tend to see JS more with EY.
some regrets for Dong-wook .... but who knows what the future holds?

am with LL @49, and scottiebabie @ 81 - whose comments i happened to read.
skimmed through comments, at random. but those two in particular echo my thoughts on the wedding fiasco, spot-on

EY has a conscience. with all the families-expectations involved, and Ji-won ---- she couldn't just back out. life isn't just about her and Jin-soo. that would be selfish. better to sacrifice just herself, than to let so many other people down.

Jin-soo's act looks stupid, yes.
i was thinking WTF?? (and laughing at the same time at his AJA jajaja!) ..... but on digesting it more, when the pieces start to unravel and be revealed = this is actually one of the most unselfish acts Jin-soo has actually done for EY.

pretty in keeping with his unpredictable yet brilliant character too (and kudos to Kang Ji-hwan doing a fantastic job playing this role to life. LOL at his coffee drinking pinkie finger point ----- leftover from Capital Scandal days)

note: he didn't charge in to grab the bride. that would have sent tongues wagging.
it also would not have left her much choice. what he did was open-ended.

he did a distraction instead. and all the blame went on him - a solo responsibility.
and yet bails EY out of a snow-balling situation (with his own reputation and career at stake) and buys her time - time to think, and to bail-out if she wanted to.

because where else can EY go but forward and get married .... with all the wedding prep and everything just charging ahead?

and even after that pandemonium, if her heart had chosen to go forth with Ji-won ultimately - EY could still have done so.

was it a crazy act? yes
was it selfish? NO

Thanks GF for the recap!!! Can't wait for the recap of the Finale.

@scottiebabie
I totally agree with you, as if you read my mind. Since the first few episodes CH showed the cliches of K-drama and ended up bursting those cliches. I remember the scene where SY and DW are on a bus and they were sharing the headphones...and the ultimate destruction of a cliche is that the main guy who was in love with the main girl for the longest time ended up with her instead of the usual naive girl who just recently got in to the picture. Usually in K-drama, a guy have a 1-sided love to a girl for the longest time, then came along a naive girl and for a short time the guy will fall for the girl and then the girl he was in love with for the longest time as a witch. Always a Cinderella story. In CH, EY and SY were not fighting with each other, even JS and JW fights were hilarious.

I appreciate what JS has done - CRAZY, I think a lot of people or better to say all of us watching CH did not expect it. But it was a very unique way, and it's not like JS randomly beats a guy, the publisher was a bad guy anyway (sorry to condone such barbaric act of JS). But I totally dig the writer(s) of CH.

So my personal opinion is CH is a different K-drama and I love it, at long last there's a new breed of leads in a K-drama. The successful girl gets the guy :-)

Love how KJH and PSY act their roles, very natural...chemistry to the highest level.

First I want to say thank to GF for a witty anD fun recap!!!!

I also appologise for my lack of contribution and antipation lately ( Since I had actually had some technical promblems , which was casued by my love to CH.) So I proudly admitted to be an officiall CH addict after re-intalling my laptop twice –after attempting making some MV, even though I 'm never a tech girl to begin with and had no idea what I was doing . :D

Anyways, like I have mentioned that people have their different opinions based on their belief and preference. However I think some of you are just too bias toward aside without any support to begin with. Like when I saw some comment on viikii saying that SY feel JS betrayed here, I was like WTF? When did he ever say or do anything to give her hopes to begin with? He has acted like a jerk toward her for the longest time without and romantic feeling involved. He even directly said or indirectly acted that she is never a woman to him, or better, my interpretation is the only woman for him is EY! It is just in your head people since you have watched and affected by too many K-drama in the past!!! But it’s not how the story was told in CH

Thanks Jane for saying what you said up there. I agree with everything you said and appreciate your point of view too. Again, thanks GF for all the hard works and once again remind me of there were more people annoyed with silly SY back then> However, I guess I am one of those who grew to dislike her character even more toward the end despite that I did like her in the beginning. I don’t know it’s because she is still acted silly ( next episode!!! ) to me illogically at certain moments or it’s because many of her supporter over-reacting or their too many offensive comments toward my beloved drama or Eunsoo couple blindly. It could be both!!! And I am not surprised! Having reading and reading so many ridiculous and over bias comments and analyses, It’s nature for me to grow some negative opinions toward her character.

In addition, for people who said HEJ is a better actress or has better chemistry with KJH, you should know that you are totally bias and delusional here. I never knew PSY and KJH before or have any interest in them. (Yeah, I watched her a bit in MG but I was never too crazy about to even want to find out about the main couple anyways, so who is PSY?0_o ) and I came to CH without any attention to watch it too. However, they literally won me over for their acting and oozing chemistry. I can even feel it just be the look they gave each other. KJH was magnificent but PSY amazingly went up to my A list atresses in CH. She can be so cute , sad , conflict, vulnerable, and suffering… in just one episode, as if she could wear so many masks. Moreover, her eyes are impressive!!! I love her crying scene. Even though I love another actress to but her crying scene never bring me as much emotion as PSY does. You can obliviously feel her frustration and sadness , or worry differently every time she cries. KEJ is all right to me because this is not the first time she acted so I had better expectation, but I don’t think that she’d be a second “YEH” or next to PSY or MGY like people said. Oh please!!! I am not talking down to the actress but I think she was over react a lot of time and her acting was inconsistent too, thus she definitely has potential and a lot of room to improve. Am I a bit bias here? I am not sure. Oh, well blame it on your fans EJ! ^^

Back to CH, after so many responses for a “ crying scene” I just want to say just because EY has been drinking her tears in silent, behind JS back does not make her love to him any less but even more. Like JS said, he is not the type that shows his feeling in public or openly, so is EY. And that’s why they are A PAIR while SY could just fearlessly express her emotion and feeling toward JS recently. EY may state her opinions clear and loud but she does not express so much with words when it comes to her emotion and love aspects as we have seen in the past. She left without a word after kissing him for the first time, just like she said "It‘s enough" after their second kiss and JS phone confession, also she initiated to hang up the call after JS explained to her his reason for introducing JS to her. And in this episode, she simply admitted that she wasn’t sure and declaration that” it was all because of him.” For me less is more!!! It is more meaningful and essential that way !!!Since we are at this, I just want to say, likewise, in CH despite the fact that SY had a lot of empty and lol screen time, but EY character was built deeper, more layers and more development with less screen time. Thumb up for the actress!!! Oh, could I share PSY with you guys too ? hahaha. !She issuch an awesome and beautiful ladyl !!!

So many people had expected SY to be the final girl because she was introduce to the story( just like, it didn’t show how EunSoo meet and fallen in love) as the main lead and has so much more screen time compare with PSY. However, I still surprised and amused when people did not see the “disappointment” ending coming to even the very last minute. 0_o?!?! I do wonder that if we have watched the same drama or they only just watched SY parts of the story (I think some admitted, no WONDER!!!). It is upset me to hear so many bashing and talking down comments and harsh criticism about the drama and the PD for their un-open-mindness, bias and delusional assumptions. CH has become one of my favorites despites all it flaws for the refresh-ness, unpredictability, uniqueness and its twists. I admit I usually do not like angst, and sad melodrama, but I enjoy every piece of Eunsoo angst and sadness ( just like, I found it beautiful and crazily painful). It’s just so deep and insane that I can’t help but crying along with EY almost every single time. And like I have explained many times, JS was never interested in SY character to begin with, not 2 yrs ago, not now or even 2 yrs later. He is just obvious about that as well, not just implying!!! I might be mean but I found it ‘s funny to read some comments about JS ‘d realize his untaken feeling toward her after the phone call in ep 16 or after her cry out loud moment later on. If it really happened like that in the drama, then it would be come illogical, pointless and a huge letdown . I d believe the writer’s be really out of it if she ever did that. Thanks God!!! It didn’t, so CH became one of my top dramas at all time!!!

By the way, It is true that I like something unique like CH, but I totally do not mind being different from most of people here either. I want to show disagreement with all the over-loved and biasness to SY character. You may not agree with me, but “SY IS JS’s SOULE MATE and BE HIMSELF WITH HER” or “SHE IS THE ONLY PERSON COULD CHANGE AND MAKE JS A BETTER PERSON” IS DEFINITELY NOT TRUE!!! These are some of the points that I wrote after watching Up 16, when I certainly said no matter what it has to be EunSoo ending( like I had mentioned in ep 15 recap) ), after seeing Eunsoo could no longer hide their REAL feeling no matter how much they tried to . Did you see EY broke out from her mask as long as she know JS left or when JS looked at her to wish her happiness and JS face at the party after telling JW that the 's leaving? Not even after the talk. He was obviously looked at EY every single chance he possible got. And who believed that they have moved on and ready for a new love interest? You must be kidding me!!!!

And to me, even apparently that JS changed because of SY words but she was never THE REASON FOR HIS CHANGES, just like I also disagree with someone that said SY has successful make JS stays for the 1st interview with no force, scam, or whatever. Yeah I agree one of the reasons he stayed and did the second interview because he values her respect toward him. However, for the first one, SY WASN’T NOT AFFECTED HIS REASON at all. It could be just anybody that would have been his “fake” gf and help him.
I dare to say all the changes that JS had made until this point ( including the ridiculous and violent wedding crasher of his) were all because of 1 person- that he has realized how important she’s really meant to him when he was away- his beloved and precious EY!!! As expected, his love to EY was clearly express in the last third. The guy had broken all HIS SO-CALLED RULES in life for EY to fulfill her wishes and happiness. We know that EY has openly asked JS to change many times, so thus he didn’t, he wanted to show his a new him with his new look-to-impress (!!!) when he was back. Completely different from the beginning, in this return, our weird JS didn’t even have a second thought about all the cell phone, driving/ car, meaningless birthday party or celebration, and of course, even the interview for SY like he always did. He just did it all willingly and effortless as he has prepared for them in the last 2 yrs. HOW COULD PEOPLE SAY THAT IT WAS SY WHO MAKE HIM TO DO THE INTERVIEW? I mean he rejected right away without a second though but when THINGS REGARDED TO EY, IT BECAME A DIFFERENT STORY!!!

Many people/ SY shippers believe that SY is the one that HAD CHANGED JS and also who he needs in his life. Sorry but I agree that we have a disagreement here. Even though SY helped to untwist his lies and also woke him up to face and deal with his love like a real man should do, but SEY IS THE ACTUAL REASON/ MOTIVE for his every single change, small or big, they were all for her. He did everything willingly because it was for her- That was his mind set. Without EY, there is NO REASON for JS to change!!! So please don’t tell me that JS changed were all because SY so she deserved him or SY is the only one that can make him a better person. SY IS DEFINITELY A CRITICAL CONDUIT( as JB has mentioned), YET THE RESULT WOULD STILL BE ZERO IF THERE WASN’T THE MAIN INGREDIENT- in this case- IT’ S EUN YOUNG! Tell me if I am wrong, would SY wake-up calls ever work if EY was not involved? Wound he stay id SY was the only reason? And I also think his action in the wedding it a very big declaration of his, which different from GF, I thought JS has change so much ( after his 7 reasons for it , of course) yet the action is still insane and wild “JS way”

Right? You know I am right!!! I really believe EY is actually the main reason of his life, his changes and his actions. As I said earlier, without EY, I couldn’t imagine JS life later on. I meant still can see EY life goes on without him, but since JS behaviors and actions were affected wholly and only by EY in the whole 16 ep of CH, I just couldn’t imagine he's leaving on without her. Honestly, can someone tell me how JS could have been in the last 2 yrs? I can’t figure, because EY wasn’t there, to interact with him, to push him around, to make him run away, to make him come back, fight and laugh with each other, to ignore he calls and avoid her interview, or stay up all night to look at her, to fight with JW for her or simply just to write. What has he been doing everyday in the last 2 yrs? But whatever it was, I am sure he wasn’t happy without EY m next to him. Like we all noticed my now JS has a habit of running away, but every time he left and came back, EY is the only reason, including this 2 yrs departure. He left so he could forget her, but the foolish JS has finally learned that'd rather impossible as long as he still lives and breathes. He decided to come back to propose her after consider for a long time and thought of it thoroughly. Like I explained, JS is THE TYPE that NOT easy to change and EY is the actual reason for his leaving, how hard is it for him to change? I think as long as he lives he will never stop loving her. He knew he loved her back then but didn’t realize how much she really means to his life until he found out and it's too late...Therefore, with SY encourage, he s going to break his biggest fear , and fight "to death" for EY- because he knew EY can only be happy when they are together. Even if he’s not a great fighter and how much he hate publicity appearance, he did the action “ not so himself” at all at the wedding to ruin his image , reputation future and his way to back-out for the woman he loves and her happiness. It burned him inside when she said she there was nothing certain, including him for what he has done, or he was the type that could do “ anything big” to show his love to her and asked him not to make it harder for her, because she was correct and has all the rights to say that. She’s everything he has so he has to change and prove to her his seriousness and sincerity by his actions, not words. There are no more lies, running away, or joking around this time, but just his love to her again was show 100% here.

I'll be back latter to give my takes on EY sticking with her decission and JS behavior at the wedding tonight. But I thought they did what they are supposed to and they are still their charaters obviously.

However, JS is SO SMART AND INSANE to think of this way!!! Bravo!!!

I must confess that although I love Jin Soo more than words can say I also feel bothered by the length he’s willing to go for Eun Young. Beating that man to pulp is …..(sigh).

But it’s Jin Soo we’re talking about. His craziness and twisted mind are the things that draw me to love him so much besides of course his undying and incomparable love for Eun Young ^-^

Jin Soo part seven:

Fortunately he’s so used to controlling his feelings and emotion that he could joke around during his show when all he wanted to do was running to see Eun Young. Although he did slip once when he informed the anchor that despite his desire to see more of him he might change his mind later. Not that it matter for he didn’t even have a clue of what he’s talking about.

He needs to see Eun Young immediately. He needs to let her know how much he really loves her. He wants to know how she really feels about him. He needs to find out whether she’s really going to be happy doing what she’s doing now.

On his way out he looks for SY who has reminded him of what he wanted to do in the first place when he’s about to give up and leave. But despite his coming back she still worries that he would do his disappearance act again, of course she doesn’t know that when he decided to return to Korea he had no intention to leave Eun Young ever again no matter what. It’s JW who had forced him to leave.

His urgency and haste in finding Eun Young doesn’t bring him an instant result. She’s not in her office and her phone can’t be contacted. It somehow reminded him of the time when he also went in a hurry after his fight with JW to tell her that he loves her two years ago. He tries to call her once again when he’s in front of her apartment. When that doesn’t work either he decides to storm her castle which is guarded by her ladies. Not that he’s afraid of them. When it comes to Eun Young he’ll brave even the wrath of God.

At first he tried to be nonchalant about his visit and giving her a careless answer when she chided him for pulling his disappearance act and cutting all contact with her. But when she asked in a hurt voice why did he bother to come here at all if she’s not important enough to know his where about he realized that the time had come to drop all pretenses.

He told her he needs to know how she really feels about him. He needs to be sure that he’s not crazy or delusional for listening to his heart which keeps telling him that she loves him too. And if she really loves him will she ever be happy marrying JW.

There were times when he thought he couldn’t live without her. But he finally realizes that no matter what happens to them wherever they are as long as he knows that she’s happy he would be able to continue living. But he can’t live knowing that she would be miserable. He can’t let that happen.

Although she didn’t give him a straight answer but her admission that she has no idea whether she’s going to be happy makes him feel better. It means she doesn’t love JW. She’s only doing what’s right. She’s being Eun Young.

She’s giving this marriage her best effort wishing for the best. But he’s been there and done that. It’ll never work. Not when she loves him as much as he loves her. He’s learnt his lesson that you can’t marry someone if you’re in love with someone else. You’ll only make yourself, the person you marry and the person you love miserable.

He told her as much. He told her that if she doesn’t feel absolutely certain that she’ll be happy it’s better for her not to do it at all. When she said slowly that if only she felt certain that he’ll be back then this won’t happen he was swamped by various emotions. Regrets, anger, relief. He regrets the things that he had done for it’s all his fault, he knows that. He feels angry at his own stupidity. But he feels relief because now he knows for sure that she loves him still.

She confirms that when she called him right after he left her apartment and thanking him for telling her once again that he loves her. But without telling him she loves him she let him know that just like him she also felt the need to protect things. Well, he’s not surprised.

He knows Eun Young will stick to her words and commitment even when it costs her dearly. But what she’s planning to do isn’t right regardless of the fact that she thinks it’s the right thing to do. Eun Young cares about so many people that she’s even willing to sacrifice her life just to make them happy. His ever so selfless Eun Young.

But she has him. Lee Jin Soo who never cares about other people, who’s selfish enough to do just what he pleases and who would move heaven and earth just to make her happy. He’ll take care of it. If she’s worried about making other people unhappy, well, he doesn’t feel worry or sorry if he has to make a certain person in a great pain.

That certain person makes his task easier by sticking to his bad form and trying to fool and cheat him with very bad offers. This is going to be much easier than he thought. His plan would be in disarray if he suddenly turns into a nice person. This is just perfect. Just like he’s expected.

What he didn’t expect is for Eun Young’s employee to be there witnessing the whole thing. She’s so worried and anxious that he’s planning to change his publisher from Eun Young to this bastard. So he firmly told her not to mention it to Eun Young.

If Eun Young finds out he’s meeting this bastard she would know that something is a miss. She would understand that there’s no way he would change publisher from her to this untrustworthy man no matter how much money he’ll get. She’ll suspect that he’s up to something. Not that she’ll ever guess what he’s planning to do in a million years. However, he doesn’t want her to be worried.

If he still has a few lingering doubts about his plan, his determination has been sealed when he finds out that she’s sick. His Eun Young is sick! Seeing how miserable she’s now he knows she would bring herself to early grave with her determination to marry JW. He who’s probably the most selfish person in the world and made of much sterner stuff than her couldn’t even endure his marriage. He just couldn’t imagine how Eun Young will cope with hers. He has to stop her. Period. There’s no turning back.

He knows she’ll definitely go through with her wedding when they met on the road while he’s walking around lost in thought and she turned her back on him. He automatically raised his hand to stop her and follow her footstep. But almost at the same time he realized that this is it. The only way for him to stop her from doing her foolish food deed is by doing his far from good deed. He definitely has to do it.

However he has an unseen problem: SY. He’s surprised when he heard that she’s planning to come to the wedding. Of course she’s invited. Eun Young likes her a lot. But he absolutely can’t let her come and see the whole fiasco he’s going to make. She’s the only one who puts him on the pedestal when he’s so not deserved that high and revere status. But no matter how undeserved that position is he likes it. As long as she doesn’t see things herself she would be able to justify his actions and he’ll still be on that pedestal.

He did hesitate for a moment in front of her wedding hall. But in the end, he still has to do it. He always knows that he’ll do anything for her. Anything.

First thanks to @GF for great recap and giving something to this CH-withdrawal victim to hang onto! :)

Secondly thanks to @LL and @Jane who so succinctly and directly hit the heart of the issues around why JS and EY did what they did, how that was in character (wacky ideas and yes even mean-streak; steadfastness in holding onto her word) and yet, in some ways, the actions reflect how JS has changed (fearless about being ruining his 'image' for the highest cause- a chance for EY to grab at her own happiness- when he used to be unable to be rude to strangers)!

I found the decision by the PD/scriptwriters to keep us guessing/satisfy both ships flawed past Ep 12. Trying to please everyone they pleased "no one" (okay I was pleased but I'm with Clockwatcher in that I skipped a couple of SY scenes along the way!)

For SY lovers, SY/JS's relationship and her family didn't get as fully developed as they'd like and JS/EY scenes were dragging the storyline down;

For EY lovers, SY and family scenes were throwaway filler while the main story of JS/EY/JW didn't give us as much history, and cute scenes as we'd like.

(Ha! The language of "us" and "them" much? Sorry!)

But yah, you could accuse them of deliberately "stringing along" all the SY lovers, though, my biased view is that one can _still_ see, from KJH's awesome acting, that there wasn't that _type_ of space in his heart for SY.

I knew it was possible JS wouldn't end up with EY (in fact at various points thought it likely) but to have him fall for SY was very unlikely by Ep 13.

My poor, beautiful Eun-young. I can sympathize with her being in a bit of a pickle, and I understand that the duties to society and family and whomever are a lot more rigid over there than they are here in the US. That being said, I'm with Girlfriday. I really wish she had taken it upon herself to call off the whole thing before the wedding. Both she and Jin-soo have displayed a lack of gumption in the clutch moments, and it leaves me sad and frustrated. Jin-soo didn't get the backbone to stay in Korea and fight for her until Seung-yeon spoke some sense into him (it's always Seung-yeonnie), and then Eun-young didn't fight for their love at all at the end there. Even as I understand that she and Jin-soo will be together (I haven't seen the finale yet, but I think we're all sure that is how it will end), the fact that both of them needed an outside force for this to happen (for Jin-soo it was Seung-yeon -- always Seung-yeon! -- and for Eun-young it was Jin-soo) leaves their ending hollow for me, and I wish that weren't the case. Still, it has been a comfort to read opinions from all of you who differ. Thanks for the insights, everyone!

@ 86 Kayt

Ah, Kayt. You are very passionate about Eun-young, which I can appreciate because I myself quite love the lady. She's amazing. There is much that you say that I agree with, and there are instances where our opinions differ. That's cool.

That being said, I would like to ask you, from one poster to another, to tone done your rhetoric. I've been following your posts for the run of the drama, and I'm finally discomfited enough to say something. I understand that you're very passionate, but your post comes off as very confrontational and it's really off-putting, even for someone like myself who admires and loves Eun-young. It's an open space and you're welcome to write whatever you like (Javabeans and Girlfriday don't hover), but several times in your post you have called Seung-yeon- and SY/JS-supporters "biased" and "delusional." You state that their "ridiculous" analyses and hate toward your EunSoo couple have made you hate Seung-yeon. You blame your distaste for KEJ on her fans. You repeatedly state that you're right and they're wrong. You get personal, leveling base attacks and behaving in the exact same manner you accuse them of behaving. I acknowledge that there are Seung-yeon supporters out there who are less than polite. But if you're holding Eun-young up as the personification of sense and dignity in contrast to "silly" Seung-yeon and her "delusional" supporters, then be the kind of supporter Eun-young deserves. Show me and other fans of Seung-yeon how to write an eloquent, calm argument that doesn't stoop to discrediting the actual persons who hold opinions that differ from your opinions (and they are just opinions, nothing more).

You have said you'll post again. I look forward to it because you're very detailed and you make some good points. It's just a shame to see them get lost in a layer of close-to-vitriolic diatribe.

@ 40 Pipit, @ 88 Pipit

OH MY GOD! Are you serious when you say that Coffee House drove you to "spending a small amount of money to buy myself a free time, slipping away in the middle of important meeting attending by the Vice President"? NO, YOU DID NOT! Did you, seriously? Hahahah! Oh, Pipit. I heart you.

And I'm getting used to your Jin-soo vignettes, lady! Have you considered writing romance novelas? I would totally read them. You can write an achingly beautiful treatise on looooove, and read it to the Vice President at your next meeting. Maybe he/she will give you a raise! ;-D

@ Girlfriday.

The usual. *phones it in* You're so wonderful, your recaps are gold, best writer ever, I worship you, goddess-and-a-half, let me feed you grapes and ambrosia, would you like my first-born, where will you be later because I want to worship the ground you'll be walking on before you even get to it etc, etc. :D Thanks a million, Girlfriday. You're the BEST!

And I love: SY is JS's soulmate....not true part.

I never understand this. And have been wondering to myself whether it's me who don't undertand the whole concept of separating soulmate and the one that one's love.

To me your soulmate is the one you should be with thus the one you love.
Stupid me.

Re-reading the recap, I was staring the picture where JS drank coffee with his pinky up .... didn't notice till girlfriday mentioned that ... felt funny/cute b'cos my husband always teased me about having my pinky up like that when I was holding something ..

For ep 17, think I like the flashback EY had at the phone booth and the way JS joked about coming to the wedding to snatch the bride. I wish PD has spent a bit time on character development in this regard.

I found SJ's beating up of another person ... a bit surreal .. wish PD could come up with a better alternative .. know it's hard to beat the cliche but this is just not convincing and silly....

@ Lahlita

I'm ashamed to admit that was all true.
And now when I have to write a report for that said important meeting, I'm still reading this comment section. (As well as surfing on the net for the pertinent points I missed during my MIS). Very bad of me ^-^

I love your idea of getting raise for doing what I love hehehe
Unfortunately I might get sack instead if the higher ups know what I'm doing hehehe

(in wishper):
I actually write a novel (yes, it's a romance) but it's been years (more than four years to be exact) and it's not going anywhere.

Wouldn't want you to read it. I guess just like Jin Soo who values SY's good opinion so do I with yours ^-^

Don't be sad Dong wook didn't get all the attention he "deserved". Take into consideration that Seung yeon was in love with another man at the telling of this story. It's understandable she wasn't paying that much attention to the underdog. ;)

You really are unbelievably kind. I'm so flattered; I don't deserve such praise. I'm not pure enough at heart to be anyone's Seung-yeon. But what the heck, I'll accept your compliment! :D I should enjoy it now, because if we find ourselves having really opposite opinions in another drama, you'll stop telling me how wonderful I am, and then I'll be so sad. :( *sniff* *tear*

I eager to hear more about your romance novel, but that is not for this thread, so go here to comment # 206: http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/07/open-thread-145/

@ Pipit and all others who are wondering about the soulmate comment which I made.

I think there can definitely be possibilities of having a soulmate and a lover. your soulmate doesn't have to be the opposite gender, it could be your best friend or what not, but the idea of a soulmate is someone who constantly understands the depth of your soul, how you are, who you are and what you're capable of. The person is someone whom you just understand in a connected way that really cannot be exaplined. It's shown that despite SY's foolishness, she has not once faltered in her beliefs of whom JS. She understands him, either by coincidence or through time, but I don't think any of use could deny that she has picked up clues in which EY wasn't able. However, as you noted (which I don't think is a problem at all) you have a different idea of what a soulmate should be.

.@ 91, Lahlita

Thanks for confronting the issue before I did, and having spoken about it such a well thought and concise manner. Not only do i feel offended despite being a neutral, I feel that whenever a negative response to the drama is expressed, it's always immediately associated with a SY shipper, which are always thought as being groundless... yet not the same for EY... even though I'm more upset at the degression of the EY character more than anything.

It's as if, a neutral person can't find a distaste in some of the exposition.... and it's not bitter, it's disappointment, which to me is very far from being bitter. Bitter would be let me rip the screen in half... disappointment is more like a version oh damn, that was good but it died half way kinda thing... or likr the famous response of GF with regards to Cinderella Sister.....

@Pipit & Kayt

Thank you very much for your post.

I enjoy a lot and love every moment concerning our EUNSOO couple...

For SY, to be honest, from the beginning to the end, I have never like her.. I do not know why... She is truely cute, but she cannot win my heart. Especially after ep. 15, I felt depressed...I could not understand why the director built her image like this, especially kissing JS.. haha, but I cannot accept at all.. Maybe I love EY & JS together so that I do not want him to kiss any women except EY... Back to SY, it is a unwise action to kiss JS even though she got drunk... I do not think that it could happen in practice. Maybe the director showed her image overacting here. Many fans approve and said that it is a very cute scene.. For me, my heart nearly dropped down if JS kissed back...haha

Thanks pipit for spending your time to post the new JS part.

@Kayt
As you comment in Viikii, you found out a viet website having some comments about EUNSOO. Could you give me the link?
Moreover, you have some evidences KJH and PSY ex have some similarities earlier too. if you have time, could you please posted again in JB, Viikii or Soompi?

Thanks a lot.

Totally love AJAAAAAA scene HAHAHA, I had laughed for liked three consecutive days (when this scene came up in my mind). Forget about reasons, it's totally cool. He gave up everything for EY and at the same time made up for all his on/off behavior for the past years.

I'm rooting for EY because of their chemistry and complexity. They (JS/EY) have such a deep bonding only them could understand, and when they communicate they use such short words without saying things in the open, and care so much for each other, which I love.

For SY, I adminds their relationship but I feel that JS always keeps some distance to himself covered by his laugh and those funny things.
That scene where JS asked SY to make a contract releasing his body ,it's was clear to me that it's his polite way telling her that he's not into her that way and she should stop doing so. I guess being professional is also to remain a strictly professional relationship. She might have to learn it in a hard way.

When this drama is over, I do hope all shippers will let go and re-watch all the episodes again, may be they will come to see how nice this drama is to bring upon these characters and conclude in such a way. Otherwise, you may miss some nice meaningful moments/dialogs that this drama really delivered.

Thanks for your recap, GF, entertaining as always.
