Never mind, Lee Byung-heon’s lawsuit revived
by javabeans
Just after the court decided that the civil suit filed against actor Lee Byung-heon was withdrawn due to the plaintiff’s lack of action, they received paperwork in the mail from Lee’s accuser, Ms. Kwon, requesting another trial.
Kwon had returned to Canada last December and has not been back to Korea since, missing two hearings, one on April 22 and another on May 20, leading the the court to close the case on June 21. However, they then found that Kwon’s paperwork had come in that day (the last permissible day), reopening the suit in which she requested compensation of 100 million won for psychological damages incurred by Lee’s false promises and sexual misconduct.
Before this latest development, a source with Lee’s management, BH Entertainment, had stated, “We honor the decision of the court. [Lee] has suffered emotionally, but it seems this burden will be relieved.”
The next trial is scheduled for July 14. If Kwon does not appear, the suit will automatically be withdrawn and the case will be closed.

Slut-shaming stinks, because you're not just targeting the designated "slut" / "gold digger" / "gravy train" rider, you're attacking every woman who's walked on the planet. To wit:
"The fact that anyone can be labeled a slut, at any time, with any level of sexual activity under their belt, and the fact that sluttiness is a moving target, makes it clear that slut-shaming isn't just about controlling how much sex women have. If you can be called a slut without so much as kissing another person, then it stands to reason that your slut status must be based on something besides your level of sexual experience or activity. And often, it is. It's based on what people assume about you just by looking at you - at your body, your clothes and the way you move through the world. Once you realize that, it becomes obvious that the slut label isn't just about controlling how much sex women have: It's about controlling how we dress, how we walk, how we talk, how we dance, how much we drink, who we talk to, how we feel about our own desires and so on and so on. And crossing the invisible, culturally-determined 'slut line' in any of these arenas is enough to earn you a label that, no matter how much we denounce and detest it, no matter how well we understand its purpose and its perniciousness, somehow manages to seep into our brains and eat away at our certainty and self-assurance."
~ "'Slut Panel' Postmortem: Shame, Shame, Go Away"
. . .
"How many times has rape been discounted because a woman was deemed a slut? How many times are women called whores while their partners beat them? How often are women’s sexual histories used against them in workplace harassment cases? The sexual double standard is a lot more dangerous than we’d like to think."
"Despite the ubiquity of 'slut,' where you won't hear it is in relation to men. Men can't be sluts. Sure, someone will occasionally call a guy 'a dog,' but men simply aren't judged like women are when it comes to sexuality. (And if they are, they're judged in a positive way!) Men who have a lot of sexual partners are studs, Casanovas, pimps, and players. Never sluts. In fact, when I just did a Google search for 'male sluts,' the first result I got was She Male Sluts DVD! I know, should have seen that coming. The point is, there isn't even a word -- let alone a concept -- to signify a male slut."
"But it makes sense when you think about what the purpose of the word 'slut' is: controlling women through shame and humiliation. Women's bodies are always the ones that are being vied over for control -- whether it's rape, reproductive rights, or violence against women, it's our bodies that are the battleground, not men's."
~ Jessica Valenti, "He's a Stud, She's a Slut: The Sexual Double Standard"

It wasn't a one-night stand. According to her, he specifically travels various times to Canada to see her and took her to places just like lovers would. He even brought her home and introduced her as his girlfriend. She came to Seoul sponsored by someone to be with him but he had a change of mind about her. But he never denied her and their relationship nor did he badmouth her to the media because he was also in that relationship, a private situation between two people. And she had accused him of illegal gambling that was proven false by the court. Is that not a malicious intent, did someone coerce her to do that? People forget that he went through almost 9 hours of interrogation in January. Was he the one throwing the stone and then hiding away? Someone mentioned that the paperwork that arrived in the mail (not email?) had been something carefully thought of. It arrived just in time on the last day. The action was last-minute but the planning is not. It's exactly the idea to get the second wave of heated comments like these going around again.. and again. So please give him the benefit of the doubt as well.

@ lol at this feminism mumbo jumo
I guess you're all for treating men and women equally...then do you complain about the fact that when men hit women they're arrested but when women hit men, nobody bats an eyelash? Do you support having women's league in sports or do you think both should play in the same league (whereby no women would compete period)? Do you complain about Korea's policy of requiring men to join the military but not women?
men and women ARE different and should not be judged by the same standards. Women are deemed sluts when they have promiscuous sex while men are not due to biological and social differences. It is EASY for any attractive woman to have sex with most men...therefore women who give it away are considered easy and slutty. It is difficult for even most attractive men to have sex with most women...therefore it is considered a skillful accomplishment when a men does so. Do you not understand that simple difference?

Everyone is missing the back story to all of this. LBH did not sponsor this little moron in Korea. A Japanese businessman did. He (Japanese businessman) put her up in apartment for three months. The plan was for her to train in rhythmic gymnastics for the Olympics. It was found later that she wasn't as talented as once thought, so the man dropped her and she was asked to leave the nice apartment. She contacted LBH and he found her a place to stay and gave her $10,000, which I'm sure included airfare back to Canada. Their relationship, such as it was, had already ended. Seeing someone in another country and then day to day is a whole lot different. He wasn't interested anymore. So what?
If you look up his work schedule, you'll see that at the time miss gold digger was in Korea, he hardly ever was there, so living with her is a stretch of the imagination. He was shooting Iris all over the world.
If Ms. Kwon tried something like this in Toronto, she’d be laughed out of Canada. What, is this 1950? She slept with him because she wanted to. End of story. She saw an opportunity and went for it. Would she have followed a plumber or a bus driver back to Korea because she thought marriage was in her future? I don’t think so. She saw a big celebrity interested in her and went for it.
From what I’ve read on this case, in her own words, he never said the word marriage, she just assumed. Well, you can’t assume and then sue when your assumption dozen’t pan out. She should forget this whole thing and stay in Toronto. Who knows? Maybe another big star will come by and she can try again. Or she can go back to her studies and training as a gymnast and move on. She’s young enough to have a really nice future. What does it do for her to label herself, “The girl who was used for sex and dumped”? It makes her look pathetic. For him its a blip in his career. Really, no biggie. He’ll still be a big star.
She should be made to return to Korea to answer the defamation charges and blackmail charges in which she was implicated. Even her accomplice couldn't believe her silence in his trial. She went back to Canada to avoid these charges. So now she can continue to bash him from the safety of her home? If she's got something concrete she should state her case and get it over with. Shame on her!

Let me say this and be done with it. No matter what happens to a person in a relationship, you have to be smart enough to do what is best for you. There is no way in H3ll I would have abandoned my career to follow a man halfway across the world to "shack up" with him, have a relationship with him and when he decides he no longer wants the relationship, sue him because I now feel betrayed! ARE YOU SERIOUS??!!!
People are involved in relationships all the time. LBH probably really did like this girl in the beginning, but guess what, people can fall out of love. Maybe he did lead her on, but she is a grown woman and should be able to make intelligent decisions for herself. To sue someone because they broke up with you and NOW you realize how STUPID you were to drop your own life and goals is PATHETIC. What she should have did was told him that I will not give up my life for you and told him to keep it moving. Again, a person can only do what YOU allow them to do to you.
I don't doubt she was hurting after the break-up, but do what the rest of us women do, shout, scream, break something or that person, eat a entire container of Blue Bell ice cream and get on with your life. Getting your heart broken sucks BIG TIME, but you get thru it and hopefully realize you are much better off without your ex. Suing someone because they lied to get in your pants is a gross misuse of the legal system.

Just wanted to add something. According to her own story, she slept with him while he was still in Canada. She told him, in her own words, that if he just wanted to have a good time to go back to Korea. And in her own words, she slept with him because he told her she was special. Special? Really? That's all it took? Please!
He did not leave Canada with her, she followed some time later, on the advice of her sponsor. LBH did continue to see her in Korea and did travel with her. He never denied this, but somewhere down the road, he may have realized she was not the "one". Obviously not that special. It happens all of the time. It was also reported that after their breakup, she had another boyfriend in Korea, a Mr. P. So, how heartbroken was she? And then in the midst of all of this, she accuses him of illegal gambling. Doesn't sound like love to me.
If he had anything to hide, he'd have paid her the $86,000. That's a piddling amount to him. Why not just pay her? Because, he doesn't feel like caving in to her demands. Why should he? She was out to ruin him. Obviously it didn't work. He's bigger and better than ever. What's she doing right about now? I'd guess not much.

Good for her. I'm hope she pursues this case and I hope she wins it. I'm not sure why people keep calling her a slut. She does seem like the type who has slept around with a lot of men. She seems naive. I honestly beleive between the two of them, HE is probably more of a slut than HER. LOL!! As for as the Japanese sponsor, you people know that the sponsor was working for LBH. Of course LBH is not going to directly sponsor her. That would have hit the news almost immediately especially in Korea where reporters are always on the look out for something like this. Having his non-famous friend sponsor her was a way to keep the relationship quiet and from the public's eye.

It does NOT matter to me who's right or wrong.
At the end of the day - the two parties involved - ONLY THEY KNOW.
We can only speculate.
What we know of Lee Byung-heun ... it is only all superficial knowledge and propagandist-agency-spiel. All part of ANY star's overall packaging, and branding.
He (or any star) may 'appear' sincere and genuine = all in a day's work.
They all know their target markets, and what works for fans.
To me, it just means their image agencies have successfully done their marketing research and work well.
Squeeing and swooning over what wonderful actors-singers they are in their roles, or how amazingly hot their bods or cheekbones adorably are, or how they've magically made us believe in their characters with decent acting skills and talent are one thing ... yo, that's why we all are here. :)
At the end of the day - bear in mind these stars are also humans (with perhaps more masks than ordinary folk) beyond those kind, intelligent, cool, perfect facades.
What IS bothersome is to see so much judgemental harsh name-calling of this (unknown to us) girl. Why? Sure, at 22 - she may be naive, she may be pathetic, she should have known better, she should just fade away with quiet dignity etc etc etc.
It would be interesting to note if people would change their harsh tunes if she OD-ed tomorrow ... and start call him the h*rny b*stard for going for this young thing almost half his age instead? Just saying ....

Whoa whoa whoa. Back up. You are taking BIOLOGICAL differences of strength and applying them to SOCIAL differences. Yes, men and women should be judged by the same social differences. The "biological argument" is generally known for the BS it is on the "can't help it." stand. After all there are plenty of rapists that use that same exscuse, but we know what it smells like.
Women are deemed things like "sluts" because of the historical view points that women should be "pure" before marriage. Men got the pass since they weren't owned, but the owners. So the "slut" equivalant never got passed to men. Words like "slut" attack a woman's sexuality, for being someone with sexual feelings and needs, but deciding to act on them instead of pretending she didn't have any.
Did you realize your defense is made by stating it's hard for men to have sex with women unless they are sluts? It is not EASY for any woman to decide to have sex with a guy when she knows how easily she could be labelled something like a "slut." How could it possibly be EASY for a woman to decide to act on her thoughts when the consequences are being labelled a slut or other sortie names? Even if a woman does decide to, that name follows a woman around. It doesn't just disappear or not get remarked on like it does for men. Or how about the fact you complain about men having to jump through hoops they, along with other women, helped create? Those hoops more than likely wouldn't be there if a woman could sleep with someone she decided she wanted to sleep with. So don't decide to call it a "skillful accomplishment" when you're also calling a woman "easy" at the same time.
Furthermore, it's rather insulting to compare women to a prize or trophy. Women are people too. Not the end-result of a game. How could you not realize something so simple?
@66tai
Isn't that rather tasteless to say after all the celebrity deaths have happened over the previous years? There's nothing in this case that qualifies suicide as "taking responsibility".

rachel, having being a survivor of a family member that committed suicide, I feel that way about it now. It is a completely selfish act to me. If you allow anything to completely undermind your self worth to the point of killing yourself is inconceivable to me. for years after my father committed suicide I was soooo angry because he took the coward's way out instead of coming to his family for help and support. no matter what you have done in life, to kill yourself is to take the easy way out. If I offend anyone, I truly apologize, but that is what I feel and its an issue I will have to deal with.
she feels she was jilted and took the steps to bring this issue to a court of law against a celebrity. when she did that, she would have to be completely retarded to think some people weren't going to berate her and call her everything but a child of God. I hope she mentally prepared herself because this is a serious battle she started. Its a stupid battle in my opinion, but one she apparently wants to fight. for another poster to say my tune would change if she O'D, it wouldn't because she started down this path. I defintely wouldn't wish that on her and I pray suicide isn't something she is thinking about. She honestly should have used this situion to self evaluate where she is now and how to move forward successfully instead of trying to revenge. leave LBH behind and move on to the man she is SUPPOSE to be with.
I have been where she is unfortunately and I heaped all the blame on my ex, but did I think to sue him for breaking my heart, NO. But once I got past the initial hurt feelings, I started to look at what I had done to aid in the end of that relationship, and quite frankly, I was the biggest fool in the world not to see the signs and shared the blame of this break-up. he was not the person for me and I thank God I was able to move on from that situation smarter and wiser.

AMEN, Rachael, Exploding Pomeranian, this discussion is starting to sicken me more and more.
I get that Ms. Kwon is behaving ludicrously. And while I understand that those of us who have been hurt by a guy want to tell her to get some pride and move on (not even for LBH's sake but for her own), the use of sexist, derogatory terms (especially by women themselves) saddens me deeply. I don't give a shit if she's right or wrong. I'm not asking anyone to be sympathetic. I was just hoping some of us would be able to express our thoughts in a way that wasn't callous, vicious, hurtful and discriminatory.
@68 tai, I'm very sorry to hear about your loss. While I do feel some sympathy for those who commit suicide, I too believe that suicide is ultimately selfish (even looking at it dispassionately). You have all the right to feel as do, and I wish you luck in dealing with the "issue."

I'll agree it certainly isn't a smart battle she's fighting, but logic I notice (for myself and others) doesn't always go into the equation after a break up. Hopefully at some point down the road, whether during or after the current hearing she'll also be able to take a clear look back like that.

I read a recent article about this actor going back to Hollywood, and then a comment about the lawsuits. So I got curious and scrolled down the list of posts who have his name as a tag. And I found that old post and those 80 comments.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!
I read a lot of comments about what really happened (Olympics, Japanese sponsors; sordid details about the women being a gold digger...) but no one ever mentionned an article or their sources proving this. When Javabeans and Girlfriday report something, they quote the website(s) which gave them the news (even if those news can be biased or wrong, they don't make up the news). But in the comments, nothing, just an endless string of sexism.
The guy's famous, someone is suing him and because he's famous, it reaches the news. That's common. But the one suing is a woman, so here's a little glimpse to what most people here have been saying:
Girls, if you don’t want your hearts broken, don’t jump into bed right away… make him work for it! / My opinion, if you are goofy enough to believe a man two times your age is interested in you for a long term relationship and you have yet to see a ring or a wedding dress, I have an some fish from the gulf a mexico that is really fresh to sell you. Don’t go for the money, go for the remainder of your dignity and move on. / clearly this woman is a slutty gold-digger
thats what gives women a bad name…women are always after men’s money. / This is the price for rich , famous and not careful in dealing with psychotic female fans / Move on girl..forgive and forget…life goes on! / If you were seriously wronged, wouldn’t you want to take action promptly? / Shame on her!
(Though, to be faire, there's 1 of the 80 comments that's against the actor.)
Yup, you read it. People have the right to judge the person suing a male celebrity because she's a woman, so she has a vagina and only people with vaginas can be called slut for no apparent reason.
Your favorite actor is being sued? boohoo! You're a fan and you can't take it. Well, justice and trials are part of life, and when there's dirty laundry between people and one of them takes it to court, it's for the court to decide. That's a human right, you know. And because I said something about proving what you're saying, here's a website where you can find the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in whichever language you speak http://www.ohchr.org/EN/UDHR/Pages/SearchByLang.aspx and the page in English with the many articles about law http://www.ohchr.org/EN/UDHR/Pages/Language.aspx?LangID=eng :
"Article 6
Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.
Article 7
All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. [... do read more if you're interested]"

Rachael : Because it’s quite frankly disturbing the names used that are focused on attacking a woman’s sexuality.
Anais : Wow. I am truly disturbed by the eagerness with which everyone is trashing the girl. Apparently feminism never happened, by which I don’t mean that Ms. K’s actions are feminist but that the comments being so easily bandied about here are incredibly misogynistic and definitely sexist.
Exploding Pomeranian : Slut-shaming stinks, because you’re not just targeting the designated “slut” / “gold digger” / “gravy train” rider, you’re attacking every woman who’s walked on the planet.
Sol : i rather feel sorry for this girl, she fell for his lies and now that she seeks redress from the law all she gets is name calling an hatred.
And someone nicely pointed out that : "she would have to be completely retarded to think some people weren’t going to berate her and call her everything but a child of God."
So instead of being of one those stupid people judging when no one's asking for you to judge (or you know, insulting someone on the Internet when you don't even know them because anonymity makes you scathing- and it's actually called defamation, and not "giving your opinion" or "free speech"...), how about you DON'T BERATE the person or CALL (women) ANYTHING BUT "A CHILD OF GOD"?
Please, be a better person than those people. I'm tired of reading so much hate on the Internet, especially on Dramabeans because it always puts me in a good mood (I love the recaps and the podcasts but also the humor and the community) or merely gives me news (and I insist, not judgments not insults).
