Coffee House: Page 7

What a fun episode. I was rolling with laughter at some parts, and also feeling loads of sympathy at others — this drama has managed to make everyone pretty darned likable, in my opinion. I know there have been a lot of heated comments pitting the two actresses (and characters) against each other, which (sadly) is all too common in fandom. I sorta wish we could all move past the direct “A is better than B” comparisons, because they’re two different parts of the main picture; they’re not meant to fulfill the same role. I appreciate that the drama isn’t pitting these two women against each other as possessive antagonists who fight each other for the man’s attention, which would just drive me nuts. There are things that they don’t see eye to eye on and they’ve got very different personalities, but also a lot of mutual respect, which we see demonstrated in this episode.

PAGE 7 RECAP

Escaping the aborted interview, Jin-soo wonders where they ought to go. After all that effort, they should find a place where they won’t be bothered. He’s thinking of a far-off rural spot, maybe a remote island, but Seung-yeon is taken aback — the two of them, together? Seeing her hesitation, he makes the executive decision to take this trip solo and directs the taxi driver to Seung-yeon’s neighborhood.

He hadn’t thought about her family and is giving her an out, but Seung-yeon feels a little bummed to be so easily let go. She asks where he’s heading but he doesn’t answer, and merely promises to call when he’s back.

As she gets out of the taxi, she’s spotted by a passerby, whose face lights up: It’s Dong-wook, happy to see her back from her trip. Seung-yeon, however, is preoccupied with concerns about Jin-soo and excuses herself hurriedly. She runs after the taxi just as her father and grandmother see her dashing away.

She rounds the corner and jumps in front of the taxi — good thing she picked the right car, is what I’m thinking — and gets back in. Jin-soo looks at her in surprise and tells her to get back out, but she says with determination that she’s staying. They ran away together, so they should see this plan out together. How can he just leave her to bear the brunt of Eun-young’s ire alone? That would be irresponsible of him.

Her mind made up, she instructs the driver to proceed, and the car starts to go… only another figure pops out to stop the car — Dong-wook. He’d just talked to the office and heard that Jin-soo ran away. Where are they going? Dong-wook won’t accept Seung-yeon’s brush-off and gets into the backseat, and instructs the driver to proceed…

…only to have Seung-yeon’s father jump in front of the car, demanding some answers. Seung-yeon tries to brush him off too, but Dad refuses to let her go and argues loudly, while yet another party pops up to the car — brother Seung-chul this time.

LOL. This is like the Simpsons joke about stepping on the garden rake. The first time a character does it, it’s mildly amusing, but after that it starts to get tiresome… until you do it so many times it becomes ridiculous and circles back to being funny again.

To appease Seung-yeon’s family, Jin-soo agrees to stay somewhere that will allow Seung-yeon to come home every night. That limits their options to Seoul, and Jin-soo checks them into a lavish hotel suite.

It’s hardly ideal, and Jin-soo grumbles at this complication. She should have gotten out of the car while she had the chance. Seung-yeon protests — they’re a team! Jin-soo takes issue with that, breaking down what it means to be a team, scoffing at the idea that they are in any way a suitable partnership. Seung-yeon pipes up with a few suggestions: “Don Quixote and Sancho? Tom and Jerry?”

Jin-soo gets right to work. Meanwhile, Eun-young maintains a calm professional face even though this has been a massive headache for her, both on a personal and business level. She betrays some of her frustration to Hyun-joo, asking who’s the bad guy in this situation. Is she truly so mean? Is it really her and not him who is out of line? She wanders around the now-deserted writer’s workshop glumly.

Ji-won arrives at Jin-soo’s place and rings the doorbell, pretending to be a deliveryman to trick Jin-soo into opening the door. Lack of a response sends him downstairs to the cafe, where he inquires after Eun-young’s whereabouts (her office) and Jin-soo’s (gone, poof).

This puts him face to face with a new arrival: It’s everyone’s favorite grumpy grandpa Lee Soon-jae (who was in both High Kick series), here as Eun-young’s grandfather. As he is aware of the bad history between Ji-won and his granddaughter, he takes the erstwhile fiancé to task — how dare he come here and continue to pester Eun-young? Doesn’t he have a conscience? (I’d say it’s common sense he’s lacking.)

Ji-won bows respectfully and speaks politely, but he’s intimidated by Grandpa and skedaddles. This is something Eun-young greatly appreciates, and she half-jokes that her grandfather ought to stick around to keep Ji-won away.

Seung-yeon sneaks in a call to Eun-young; Jin-soo had told her not to call, but Seung-yeon feels compelled to at least check in. She isn’t at liberty to disclose where Jin-soo is staying, but assures Eun-young that they’re fine and that she’ll be sure to call if something comes up.

Jin-soo sees her on the phone and takes over the call. The two longtime friends revert to their familiar script of faux-politeness, which covers up their true aggravations. For instance, Jin-soo asks if she managed to settle the aftereffects of his departure, as this is her specialty. Eun-young says with an edge to her voice that she’s gotten very good at cleaning up his trash, and this time he sure left a lot: “If your next book isn’t a big success, I believe I’ll be quite upset.”

Jin-soo returns, “Yes, which is why I’m working very hard.” She replies that working hard isn’t enough — he’d better write his ass off. This time a “regular success” won’t be enough to compensate for his behavior.

Here’s where the conversation takes on weighty overtones, and their anger and hurt at each other spills over into their loaded words. It’s as though this stunt pushed things a step farther than he’d gone before, testing their friendship beyond normal levels. She says as much, telling him he’s crossed the “Maginot Line” — a reference to a line formerly believed impenetrable, which basically means he went too far to escape without repercussion.

However, she isn’t the only one who feels wronged, and his next comment indicates that Jin-soo has been feeling some hurt of his own: “How much more money do I have to make to satisfy your ambition?” He says she seems greedier than in the past, which not only hurts but outrages her. I’m inclined to feel more for Eun-young in this situation, but there’s something to his tone that you can’t quite dismiss, either:

Jin-soo: “How much more famous do I have to get for you to be satisfied? I’m asking because it seems like there’s no end. I’m not an endless supply. No matter how much I keep writing manuscripts, you’ll want more.”

Her response hits home: “If you stop writing, will you disappear?… What’ll you do if you don’t work? Will you hide away somewhere and take some pills? And if you get tired of that, you’ll call it quits?” Growing more heated, she calls his behavior worse than being mercenary — he treats everything like a joke, like nothing’s important.

Eun-young: “You say I’ve changed? Well, people change, you bastard! I thought you might have developed a sense of responsibility after becoming famous, but why don’t YOU change? You’re trying to make your secretary into a pro? She’s more of a pro than you! No matter what crap her boss makes her do, she obeys, and she worries about the people around her. What’s the big deal about being a pro? — a person needs sincerity! She’s better than you — who’s teaching who?”

She warns him to finish his draft in a month. Any longer than that, “and I can’t forgive you.”

Bravo! I love this exchange, and I love that both sides have reason to feel hurt so there’s no clear-cut Good Guy or Bad Guy. Eun-young’s got more basis for complaint because of Jin-soo’s latest antic, but this isn’t a simple matter of subtracting one’s wrongs against the other’s wrongs and seeing who’s been wronged more.

On top of that awesomeness, I love the scene that follows, as Eun-young gets her emotions under control and heads back to join her grandfather, who has of course overheard the entire exchange. She explains that Jin-soo ran away, and Grandpa asks why. Without being self-pitying, she answers honestly. Her smile and matter-of-fact tone contrast with the words she says: “Because he really hates me. He says I’m mercenary.”

Even so, she can’t manage to hold her tears, to her embarrassment. She excuses herself, passing Dong-wook on her way out, who notices the tears.

Dong-wook continues to be adorable, particularly when Seung-yeon calls to request some of the special coffee from the cafe for Jin-soo. She can’t go pick it up herself (that would alert the others to Jin-soo’s presence in Seoul) and asks him to deliver it to her father’s coffee shop, promising to treat him later in exchange for the favor. Eagerly, Dong-wook answers quickly, “A movie!” It takes her a moment to register that he wants her to treat him to a movie, to which she agrees. He follows that immediately by asking, “When?”

That’s a little weird, but she rolls with it; she supposes that she’ll first have to get the coffee from him, to which he blurts, “Tonight!” Hahaha! I can see why he decided to cultivate the silent mystique at work.

Dong-wook also lets her know that he saw Eun-young crying, so she starts to gently chide Jin-soo for his behavior: “In making you comfortable, everyone else got stuck in a really bad position.” She points out that it wouldn’t have killed him to do the interview, and feels guilty for following his lead now that she thinks of the fallout.

Jin-soo keeps his attention fixated on his work as she talks, and complains that she’s using his onetime praise as an excuse to speak freely now. However, despite pointedly ignoring Seung-yeon’s criticism, her words do get through to Jin-soo. Later that night, he leaves the hotel for the publishing office.

As Eun-young escorts her grandfather out and says her goodbyes, he asks if she is in a romantic relationship with Jin-soo. Eun-young answers that they just fought over money, but Grandpa isn’t wholly convinced. He cautions her that it could lead to complications later.

While rearranging files in her office, Eun-young finds a stash of old photos that date back to her university days. She smiles as she flips through graduation pictures, but her mood instantly sours at those depicting her and Ji-won as a happy couple. She rips Ji-won out of the photos, then lingers on one that features the old foursome: Jin-soo, his wife, Eun-young, and Ji-won.

Eun-young tears Ji-won’s image out of the quartet, and then — interestingly! — folds the photo over so that she is sitting next to Jin-soo, rather than his wife. And then there were two.

She contemplates her revised image for a long moment, not noticing Jin-soo arriving behind her. He calls out from the doorway, which startles Eun-young so much that she tosses the photo into the trash in a panicked gesture. The altered photo would probably lead to a mighty awkward conversation, so she babbles and blocks his path to the trash can.

Of course, her suspicious behavior just makes him more curious and he continues his approach, at which point she trips him. Based on her reaction, Jin-soo wonders if those are nude photos, then has to add the dig that he’s already seen her nude. That earns him a swift kick in the shin.

Recovering her composure, Eun-young asks why he’s here. Jin-soo answers that the rumors have spread about her crying over the interview, so he came to make sure the company wasn’t ruined. She laughs at that. Now they’re both back to their witty, cool personas — their vulnerabilities tucked out of sight — and the repartee is light and swift.

Eun-young: “You don’t have any power to control my life.”
Jin-soo: “That’s true.”
Eun-young: “Naturally. Who are you, anyway?”
Jin-soo: “Good for you.”
Eun-young: “You’re not even anything.”
Jin-soo: “Exactly.”
Eun-young: “Hmph.”
Jin-soo: “Then that’s that. I’m off.”

Eun-young can’t stop herself from asking where he’s staying. He answers that he’s fine, so she need not worry. She mutters, “Who’s worrying?” He returns, “That’s what I’m saying. Of course, you’re not one to worry about me. It’s only because my secretary exaggerated so much.”

It’s nice that Seung-yeon is their bridge now — she called Eun-young to check in, then tweaked Jin-soo’s conscience enough to send here now. What I love about their banter is that it’s the kind in which everything is said in the subtext and what they don’t say — the actual text says hardly anything at all. Eun-young doesn’t WANT to need the assurance that he’s okay, and she won’t admit that she’s worried… just as Jin-soo doesn’t want to care enough to come here and assure her. So he can blame this on his pesky secretary.

While Jin-soo heads to his apartment to collect some books, Eun-young has a lonely glass of wine in her office. She wonders what to do with Jin-soo, who’s always laughing and joking “without one sincere word.”

A phone call from a singsong Ji-won makes her look out the window, where he peers over with his own drink. He offers to join her, to which she hangs up the phone and shuts her blinds.

Eun-young calls Seung-yeon to ask what hotel they’re staying in. Seung-yeon nervously resists, not wanting to counter Jin-soo’s wishes, but hearing that Jin-soo dropped by to talk to Eun-young alleviates her apprehensions. Eun-young leaves for the hotel, which means that her office is empty moments later when Ji-won drops by with a bottle of liquor.

Jin-soo is leaving his office when a strange sound captures his attention, coming from the publisher’s office. Warily, he makes his way to Eun-young’s office, where he finds the source: A drunk, weepy Ji-won, huddled over the trash can crying over discarded photos.

Ji-won can’t believe Eun-young would be so cold to cut him out of her memories, when he’s always treasured his. (Funny how that “treasuring” didn’t extend to not crapping on the actual relationship by cheating on her, huh?) He turns to an unsympathetic Jin-soo for comfort, who turns his attention to the photos in question.

One in particular catches his eye: the one Eun-young had folded over to bring their images closer together. He stares at the image for a long moment as the significance of this sinks in.

Eun-young arrives at the hotel suite before Jin-soo gets back, and tells Seung-yeon, “You’re more capable than I thought, as a secretary.” Deciding to wait, Eun-young helps herself to some wine. Seung-yeon declines to share the wine and sits with her, while Eun-young sinks into a thoughtful mood that grows more melancholy the more she drinks.

Eun-young asks if Seung-yeon finds it difficult working with Jin-soo, admitting that it has been pretty tough on her. Seung-yeon agrees that it was rough at first, but the more time passes, she’s getting used to it, “And now I can even sense the pattern of what he’ll say next.”

Eun-young sighs, “That’s impressive. It’s only getting harder and harder for me. Why is that? There must be a problem with me.”

I love this, because it’s pretty much an admission that she has feelings for Jin-soo that are complicating her professional feelings, as her grandfather warned. She’s not admitting it TO Seung-yeon, who doesn’t read any meaning into it, but we understand that Eun-young’s personal feelings are getting all tangled up. It’s funny, because on the outside it seems like Seung-yeon is the mess and Eun-young the cool, collected professional. Emotionally, however, the situation is flipped — Seung-yeon’s feeling good about her life, while Eun-young’s all in turmoil. I guess you can’t fool the heart.

By the time Jin-soo arrives, it’s late and Eun-young is asleep in the bedroom after having polished off a bottle of wine. Jin-soo tells Seung-yeon to go home for the night, and tucks Eun-young into bed.

With the photo still fresh in his mind, Jin-soo looks at her with a troubled gaze. He becomes so lost in his thoughts that he drops his kettle and spills the coffee he’s making. Seung-yeon, who is just about to leave, starts to clean up, but he ends up snapping at her.

He softens the edge from his voice and asks if she’s going home, as though he’s about to suggest something. However, because she has plans — a midnight movie (midnight to work around her odd schedule) — he dismisses her. Seung-yeon senses that he had something in mind and eagerly offers to cancel — aw, poor Dong-wook — as she’d much rather stay here with Jin-soo.

Jin-soo tells her not to cancel, but invites himself along. She’s happy to agree.

On the bus ride, Seung-yeon mentions how Jin-soo had made such a wonderful first impression. In fact, she thinks he’s more personable the less you know him. She assures him that it doesn’t mean she doesn’t like him now, just that there’s a big difference from his first impression.

When the bus lurches, Jin-soo reaches out to steady her, which makes her recoil in surprise. She explains that it’s odd to see him being so considerate after the way he normally treats her, but Jin-soo answers that she’s not his employee right now; he only messes with her when she’s on the clock. He adds, “Just enjoy it when I treat you like a woman.” He means that he’s being chivalrous, but I suspect that the gesture makes Seung-yeon aware of their genders in a more acute way — as in, it makes her think of him as a man instead of her weird boss.

HOW much do I love that wounded, angry look on Dong-wook’s face when he sees that his date has brought a date? Bwahahaha!

Seung-yeon remains oblivious, and it takes a while for Jin-soo to catch on. At first he just finds Dong-wook’s stony silence puzzling, such as when Seung-yeon stumbles in the dark and Jin-soo grabs her arm to steady her. Then Jin-soo follows Seung-yeon into the row, leaving Dong-wook on the end, and Dong-wook shoots him another offended glare. Finally understanding, Jin-soo offers Dong-wook his seat next to Seung-yeon, taking the aisle seat instead.

However, that ends up belonging to another patron (the tickets are numbered), so Seung-yeon instructs Jin-soo to sit on her other side. Weathering another scowl from Dong-wook (see above), Jin-soo mutters to himself, “I came to watch one movie and may just end up stabbed.”

As the other theatergoers enjoy the movie, Jin-soo’s mind wanders and lands on an old memory. In the flashback, he’s laughing and chatting with Eun-young until Ji-won bursts in on the scene, wedges his way between them and pushes Jin-soo aside, monopolizing Eun-young’s attention.

I’m not sure if this means that he liked Eun-young first but missed his chance when Ji-won made a move before him, or that he liked her despite the fact that she was dating his hyung. But in any case, this flashback shows us that there was in fact the possibility for Jin-soo and Eun-young to be together, except timing got in their way. And after his wife died, that door was shut for good. (Or at least, they both treated it as shut.)

After the movie, Seung-yeon suggests going for some ice cream, but Jin-soo catches Dong-wook’s furtive head-shake at him. Jin-soo excuses himself and takes a taxi, and it’s worth noting that Seung-yeon is visibly disappointed when Jin-soo leaves, just as Dong-wook is visibly gladdened.

At the hotel, Jin-soo finds Eun-young asleep in bed. Or half-asleep, I should say, because she murmurs groggily, “That sounds like Lee Jin-soo’s voice. Is it you?”

He sits by her, and without opening her eyes, she tells him that he’ll regret it if he loses her, too. Her tone isn’t mean, just matter-of-fact and sleepy:

Eun-young: “You can’t do a thing without me, punk. Cocky. You have no sincerity. Because you don’t have any, nobody treats you with any. It’s not that I’m not greedy — it’s that you’re making me into that, you know that? I can’t just let you get away with it.”
Jin-soo: “Cut me a little slack. If you don’t, who will?”
Eun-young: “I’m tired of it, too. You’re done. Living like that’ll mean the end for you.”

I love this exchange (can you tell there are a lot of exchanges to love in this episode?), because it’s a stripped, honest conversation. These two have trouble being candid in normal circumstances, but it’s moments like this (as in the Jeju hospital) that they can cut out the bull and be straight with each other. Even if one is half-asleep (or pretending to be, to give her the excuse to be frank).

Her words have an impact on Jin-soo, who spends the rest of the night brooding by himself. (How gorgeous is the above photo?)

He stays up all night thinking, and when the sun finally rises, he’s still awake, still in the room while Eun-young sleeps (much like their night in the hospital). When Eun-young wakes, she sees Jin-soo sitting by the window, gazing off in thought.

COMMENTS

As if you couldn’t tell by the many times I used the phrase “I love this” in this recap, there were a lot of things that worked for me in this episode. First of all, I think it’s fantastic that Jin-soo got called out on his behavior, by both ladies. At this point, they’re the only ones who have any sway over him, much as he tries to pretend they don’t. Because frankly, he deserved it.

Jin-soo has pulled many stunts in his career, and I’ve always wondered why. I know there’s something there under the surface, so I have faith that there’s a valid reason for his behavior. I’m okay not knowing the full truth now, because the show has earned my trust and I’m willing to go along for the ride. However, that aside, even if he has the most legitimate reason in the world, the fact is that his behavior is pretty irresponsible. I’m not blind to it, but maybe we (okay, I) would have been harder on Jin-soo earlier if not for the character’s charm, which is greatly enhanced by (but not limited to) Kang Ji-hwan’s own personal charm. But that’s the way of the world, isn’t it? The handsome, charming jerks always get away with more. When you add bestselling author (read: cash cow!) to his list of attributes, it makes sense he got away with it this long. But as with anything, there are limits.

If the Jeju episodes built the foundation for a Seung-yeon/Jin-soo romance, this episode certainly paved the way for Eun-young/Jin-soo. This is the first time I’ve really enjoyed having an uncertain “main pairing,” but I’m content with it so far because both sides have been portrayed well. I also enjoy the pendulum swinging from one side to another, giving us reasons for both sides in alternating fashion. That’s the best kind of love triangle, in my opinion — one where both legs make sense. When the “real” pairing is so obvious from the get-go, the romantic tension can feel very contrived because we know that the other side is never going to work out. Here, both sides make sense.

(This is different from a show that just doesn’t know what its pairing is, and therefore confuses the viewers with its ambivalence. Triple was a show that lost people’s attention because it was pretty wishy-washy about the relationships, and failed to create compelling reasons for any of the romances. My Love Patzzi feared offending both camps and therefore copped out at the end, which satisfied neither camp. I consider Coffee House to be different from those cases, because even though we don’t know the end result, at least there are persuasive arguments for both pairings.)

That aside, I just have to comment on how much I love the look of this drama. There’s a great use of color and contrasting light and a lovely palette that’s really appealing to look at. A drama like Bad Guy has a sepia tinge, Cinderella’s Sister was kind of dark and the colors washed out accordingly, and Wish Upon a Star and Oh My Lady were bright and colorful to correspond with their sunny, simple attitudes. Coffee House uses a lot of color, but it isn’t limited to child-like primary colors like Wish Upon a Star; the hues are bold but balanced with a heavy use of darkness, which reflects the drama thematically as well as visually.

What happens?!......Arghh......I think I'm going crazy. I don't like spoilers! But being the helpless romantic that I am I coudn't be happier with what I just read.

Is there really such kissing scene in this drama (where thousands of unspoken feelings delivered through the act)?

Is it really between Jin Soo and Eun Young? Does it happen in the present and not in the past?

I'm speechless! Can hardly wait to hear more about it!

I had some kind of psychological hang over with this episode... And when I finally crawled out from my dizzy state I knew it : I was in love with this show lol

CH was REALLY not a winner in my heart so far. But episode 7 just swipt me over my feet (I don't know what's up with me lately but in PT episode 7 was a blast too... Karma, is that you ?)

I used the Serendipity's Aspirational Gap theory on CH and it helped me to understand my puzzlement with the priors episodes...

I was pretty hooked too by the direction's work here (I loved EY's scene when she muses in JS appartment. She used JS'sreverse path to com in : through the hidden door behind the bookcase).

More about that in episode 8 :) (and I wish in all the rest of the episodes)

hey all
i like watching coffee house
but i feel like something is missing
i initially was hyped to watch the show cos of the han eun jung, park si yeon and that writer dude
i forgot his name but he is cool, seen him in some other dramas before
now that 8 eps have passed
i dont really know if i can continue to watch it
i dont really know what im really watching
all banter and no real substance
i still see that the writer is being a dickhead to his blonde secretary
and that the publisher is trying to tell her ex to piss off and that has lasted at least 6 eps
but there are glimpses of flashback about the writer's wife
but thats all
i dont really know what to expect
theres the odd couple with the secretary and the barista going out (why did he choose a role that is so akward and wierd, we know he can act but this is shite)

to dramabeans, do you know what im getting at
im currently watching bad guy with kim nam gil and i look forward to each ep cos i wanted to know what move he is going to make next
but in coffee house, what am i really looking forward to???????????????????
there is no real romance, just a writer who just bitches, cant communicate and well its getting boring, if this bull shit of being agro to the secretary continues, i will stop watching coffee just like how i did in pasta, and the only reason i stopped watching pasta was due to the fights between head chef and that underling chef, that just ruined it for me

going off topic though
but i really really cant see where coffee house is leading with the story
is the writer going to eventually get with the secretary or the publisher
i dont really care cos really, does it matter, who wants to be with a guy who treats you bad like he does and doesn't really pay attention to your needs
thats why we think his wife died (rumours not truth)
but seriously
i like what happen in the first couple of eps but the honeymoon period finished 4 eps ago and really, no real progress of the story has, i feel like the last 4 eps dragged and dragged
i just wish they just get on with the story

anyone wanna add their input feel free cos this show is getting frustrating
its like saying, i wanna go to america but instead of going from australia to america, u just dawdle and ponder for a long while before you commit to going, this is the feeling im getting

@lahlita,

good point about SY's necessary professional changes to meet JS's work standards, and i am hoping that as the character matures in a personal manner, it would be because she's doing it for herself. and i agree that JS is an equal opportunity disrespecter, as you had pointed out that he has avoided certain responsibilities in his career. as i said, JS still has some growing up to do, but it's expected that with every drama, the main characters have to mature. because of his current behavior, i almost want the female leads to be independent of him. as kdramas go though, i'm sure the two females will be helping him with his transformation. however, i also want him to realize his changes because of himself, because he needs to for himself, despite of the ladies' guidance; that's me hoping it to be somewhat realistic, but that's probably asking too much. kdramas fulfill a lot of women's idea that they can change a man. hah. i don't mean to be cynical early this morning. feel free to enlighten me again, lahlita ;) i'm tunnel visioned right now, and i truly enjoy reading your articulate views. :)

last night, the DW/SY pairing had me thinking ... DW likes SY as she is, and as she attains more personal growth, it seems to me that he would welcome that, too. he seems to genuinely like her for everything that she is and becomes. there's no better way to put it, but how cute is it that DW continues to go to her father's cafe and be willing to drink awful coffee. yep, their courtship is somewhat tangible to me.

true. maybe when he showed up at her dad's cafe is when he started liking her. i was hoping the transition would be gradual, but i can live with it. DW's been awesome. i wonder if his character will be fleshed out some more in later episodes? several commenters have expressed surprise that he's playing a minor role. i understand he's at the stage of his career that deserves lead status ... maybe there's more to his role as DW, which is why he accepted the role??? or perhaps he likes being a character actor or it could just be a chance to work with certain people or maybe it's wanting to be a part of a good show ... eh, who knows. i'm just glad he's in this show.

I have a strange feeling there is a reason why Jin-Soo does not drive. Did he hit his wife with his car? Or maybe he was in the car with Eun-Young? Not sure. But absolutely loving this drama.

I have no idea about the novel or anything. But it's not a surprise that SY would end possibly end up with JS. There's a reason why just like the show makes JS/EY shippers sure that they are going to be the couple, others have always been sure that it would be JS/SY.

But I've always had the feeling it would be JS/SY. I don't know if you could call me a JS/SY shipper, but I do disagree with those who say that JS/SY shippers would be devastated after ep 8.

I don't think so. I guess everyone sees it the way they want to, but I never got the feeling that JS/EY were going to end up together. If he does end up with someone, I see it being SY, and I see the story slowly setting up JS/SY.

I think it's been shown ever since episode 2. That's just the feeling I got and how I saw it going from every episode since then.

And I saw even episode 8 as slowly paving the way for SY. Do I think it's anywhere near close, no? But it has been developing slowly and I think it will pick up soon.

I also think it is smart of the PD and writers to portray it this way. SY is the one who first has the crush on her boss. For him, the boss to be all interested in her would be *eyeroll*

As I said, it is developing slowly, and I have a hunch that she's going to not be his secretary once the six months are finished. And it will go forward with them NOT being in a boss/secretary relationship.

And no even now, I don't think he is simply treating her as an older brother would. He is treating her like he would an employee (like he said, he is an ass to his employees, apparently), as well as becoming more and more personable with SY.

But his teasing. Yeah. Brothers do that all the time. But there are always some similarities between how brothers and cousins treat girls, and guys teasing girls they like. (Not that JS likes her now.)

The biggest indicator that his teasing is not all brotherly: when he teased her about knowing her size and having her exact measurements memorized. He was just doing that as a teasing way, as well as to laugh and embarrass her in front of the elder store owner. And she knew it. But no way that's a brotherly joke.

I'm in denial, but just in case someone here can shed more light by reading the text around the website describing the book here it is-

http://www.kyobobook.co.kr/product/detailViewKor.laf?ejkGb=KOR&mallGb=KOR&barcode=9788994025032&orderClick=LAG

I just can't believe, as someone at soompi wrote, that all the angst, all those amazing flashbacks, the beautiful all-night watching incidents and emotions and snippy fights, and hilarious tango seduction scenes and tender kisses in a phone booth in the rain were just to set up another couple.

As Baidu fans expressed it "After 10 years of weathering the wind and rain, growing this cabbage (their word for the relationship), to have a white rabbit come by suddently and take it away, is pretty heartless. How many decades does a person have in their life?" ;)

Oh well, I've nothing against SY, and think she and JS can indeed make a lovely couple, and heck- I even think EY would be all for it.

She saved JS out of her own free will- against JS's apathy, no strings attached- and if JS now finds it in his heart the will to go on without her and start a life of his own, then yes, I think EY will be happy for him too.

(Who am I kidding? I'm going to stay in denial until episode 13... then I'll break down and start crying...)

But keep you hope up untill the last Ep ( I know I am in denial, but we never know if that decided to change the outcome)
I will stay and fight for it until the last minute . If EY wont get what she deserved after all she has done, I am not going to watch any future dramas of this PD/ writter... since my poor heart cant take so much ( Now, that when I call myself silly but... oh well)

haha. ya'll need to calm down. this show has been successful in keeping us in suspense, and if, indeed, the book does exist, then, so be it. the drama has been very good either way. and trust the writer, you still never really know. if the show's based on a book, i'm a bit surprised that this is just being known now. as i mentioned, it is usually mentioned when a book or manhwa/manga or serial from another country is being turned into a korean film or drama.

based on this site i visited, i gathered that coffee house is an original and not a book. and from reading the director's and actors' insights, anything can still happen. i do hope it is an original so that we are kept in suspense with the ambiguous pairings.

anyway, here's the site: http://thekpopnation.com/blog/2010/06/02/kang-ji-hwan-says-coffee-house-is-adventure/

Q: Will there be a change after the fifth and sixth episode to how Jin-soo and Eun-young are in a relationship where they keep squabbling?
Kang: Well, Eun-young is like a blessing, a soulmate to Jin-soo. So I think a romantic plot will slowly start to emerge between them too but that’s all I’ve heard from the scenarist and I don’t know what will happen after so it’s hard for me to say more. I just think that there’ll be much development in their situation.

@17

But you have to stay and watch- even if it's true, who else would feel EY's pain as keenly as those of us who have become as invested in her and JS as she is herself?

@18

Well, in a way, I hope EY will be happy.

1) She's already proven she can live when her romances go wrong (JW), she can lead a happy, fulfilling life beyond it, filled with her wonderful grandpa, a doting aunt, great employees, publishing house challenges (which she aces), and yes... even an "old friend, who is very fussy about his coffee".

The point- EY can live without JS.

2) Beyond that, since she actually loves JS, I think she too will be pleased for him that he's found a way to pick himself up at last and move on with someone else. Even if that someone else isn't EY.

We already know EY thinks SY has potential- I think EY will consider SY a good person to "hand-off" the care of said old friend to.

What I can't figure out is how JS's change will be made to make sense... I mean throughout the series, and specially ep 7 and 8 makes it clear as day that he's not at all indifferent to EY, and possibly (from the flash backs) has not been indifferent to her romantically for a long time. I'm stumped.

with people anticipating episode 12, everyone has been assuming a certain change in the romantic wind since episode 8. while that could be true, the way i understood pyo's explanation (and seems to have been backed up by kang ji hwan) is that the way the show has been portrayed so far is like a sitcom, but by episode 12, the full story (i.e. the history with the dead wife) will unfold in a manner of a miniseries. from my understanding, they were specifically talking about the vibe of the show based on how the story unfolds.

@ ambs, where will you be volunteering? that's awesome that you'll be pursuing a good cause!

and atta girl. keep watching the show. appreciate its great points and trust the writers.

anyway, another reason why i'm not completely buying the existence of an actual book is because of the this director's comment: "What myself, the scenarists and actors are set to do are not to create something that has already solidified but a show that self develops."

it sounds to me that they're allowing the story to tell itself as they move on with the show. it doesn't sound to me like it's based on any existing material.

i am going to be on a marine conservation program! i hope to have fun while aiding in helping for a cause i care about ^^ and try to ignore how polluted the ocean has become while swimming in it haha.

I'm going to take my ten-foot pole and carefully push this rumor away from me. Come now, there's no need for anyone to get bent. I choose The Path of M a r a. Calmly trusting the writers to make good on the excellent story they've started, regardless of who ends up with whom (or maybe they'll all just end up as friends which wouldn't be the end of the world either). The show has been wonderful thus far; complex characters and moments of laugh-out-loud comedy interspersed with quieter, beautiful moments. Let's just take it as it comes, yeh?

Shoot, if I had my preferred shipper ending, NONE OF YOU would be happy because both Jin-soo AND Dong-wook would be in my living room, fanning me and feeding me grapes, each only wearing one strategically placed banana leaf. But that's not gonna happen, is it? Hmm, maybe I should write to PD-nim and suggest it....

I do agree with mara that after episode 12, the show will probably unfold differently and be a different genre.

I just also have a feeling that romantic movement, if any, in JS/SY won't happen while he's her boss.

@ ambs, you're very ambitious and motivated. i think it's great that you're creating opportunities in your life. a marine conservation program ... well, that's pretty amazing. am sure you'll learn some things too about marine life. and yes, the gulf oil spill's disastrous. i don't know how they will clean it up, but i hope they do it soon for the sake of marine life. enjoy your trip.

also good to know that you'll maintain some optimism. you might still be in tune with the drama. anyway, fan made excellent points regarding EY; so, even with the possibility of an SY/JS pairing, we know in the end, she'll still maintain her dignity and have grown from her experiences. that is what i hope for all the characters, especially the female ones. wherever the story takes us, i think the writer will give the characters their due respect.

another reason i love this drama is that is has resulted in squeezing out some fascinating arguments and theories about its direction. so, let me add my own. and despite of what i would like for the both female leads (be strong independents), this is what i've constructed based on what has been hinted to us so far. and bear with me, as it's long ...

i think that from the beginning, EY and JS have always had an emotional bond with each other, possibly even before JW and JS's wife entered the picture. perhaps it wasn't a romantic one, which could be why they didn't become a couple then, but there certainly was a good bond between them. eventually, they were both introduced to their partners. as time passed, JS's wife could have sensed an emotional connection between her close friend and her husband, even if the two weren't aware of it themselves. EY and JS were faithful to their partners, but perhaps an innocent situation could have been misinterpreted by the wife, which would have led her to end her life. while they were innocent, her death has placed a guilt on EY and JS.

as has been shown, the wife's passing caused JS to nearly end his own life, and thankfully, EY intervened. since then, she committed herself to saving him from his guilt, from losing control. her commitment to this cause could have driven a wedge between her and JW. her attention had been diverted from her duties as a girlfriend to being a savior and friend to JS. that diversion led JW to blame JS. he began to resent JS for taking away his girlfriend's focus, and eventually, as we know, JW cheated. JS was aware of JW's resentment and believed he was the wedge that came between JW and EY. on top of his wife's passing, he also felt responsible for contributing to the break-up between JW and EY. forward to the current situation, since ep. 8, things begin to slowly unravel, but EY and JS don't become a couple just yet. the past is still a hurdle; the guilt continues to loom and a sense of loyalty to a wife and to a dead friend prevents any romantic entanglement. the conflict between JS and EY continues.

it could very well be that SY's attraction to JS is a puppy girl crush. i love how she can be giddy and nervous around him. it's very puppy girl crush. she does everything she can to improve herself (professionally and personally), even refining her appearance. the initial aim is to gain JS's respect/approval. (side note: i haven't taken into consideration as to whether or not she saw what happened at the end of ep. 8.) while she likes and respects him, she obviously feels the same way for EY, too. she and EY share a mutual respect for each other. compared to the other employees, she serves as having a keener insight into the dynamics between EY and JS. and this for me is where it turns into a miniseries (per the director and kang ji hwan), possibly where ep. 12 comes in. while she's battling her own feelings for JS, eventually, SY learns the truth about the past. as the drama unfolds, and she begins to be embroiled in it, she sees that unbreakable tie between EY and JS, who, due to other factors, still can't quite get together and resolve their issues. JS becomes instrumental in finally bringing them together. this could very well be why JS is poised to have equal lead to EY. heh, this analogy's a bit off, but she's like pollyanna or mary poppins. she simply brings people together and makes them realize the good and the freedom and happiness that love brings. SY could have been set up as a positive and determined character that is pivotal in bringing the other leads together.

throughout all this, DW has also been a hovering presence in JS's personal life. i haven't given much thought as to how the story between two can unfold, but to me they could represent fresh and uncomplicated love. their potential relationship is something more relatable to me, as i've explained earlier.

all this is just conjecture. i'm intrigued to know what will actually unfold, and if i get a few things right, then, cool. heh.

@131

Haha that makes sense! Especially the part where Seungyeon is the person who isn't weighed down with so much emotional baggage from their history and can see the good things that would come out of their relationship (of course there are her feelings for Jinsoo; but I also think that is important, as I say later). I feel like that would be a very satisfying role for Seungyeon to play, and not, if Jinsoo and Eunyoung end up together, the jealous second lead (though I can't ever really see her being like that). This answers actually many questions for me, because she was the first character to be introduced (or one of the first, anyway) and I thought, man, she must be the lead, or have a central role in a love triangle (this is my first instinct). But as the drama progressed, I failed to discern a purpose that seemed important enough for her to be even a part of the drama. But this would be an excellent explanation.

I think that her feelings, as someone said, is equivalent to a schoolgirl crush. She freaks out when he gets close, wants to spend time with him, etc., but I don't think it's yet at the point where she'll be totally heartbroken if he ends up with someone else. I think this is crucial in that, if the scenario above plays out, she's at a point where she grows from the experience of one-sided love and bearing up well by helping said one-sided love get together with someone else, but also where the disappointment and letdown doesn't totally ruin her. If any of that made any sense at all.

I would totally get on board with this Seungyeon. With the way her character has been progressing, I wouldn't be surprised at all and I, at least, can see it happening in a very plausible manner.

Well, based on the comments about the "folded photo" and JW's question about "can love change?" this is directed at the men in whose life their women left them.

If anything, JS is unsure of the EY's meaning. When she talks to him in her druken stupor, she confirms that she is leaving him or wants to end their "hatefilled" relationship. If anything, JS should be afraid that EY will leave him too so what does he do the next morning after staying up all night and tellhing her that it is still dawn...get some rest.

Dawn is the time that marks the beginning of the twilight before sunrise
Twilight, final period: the time when something is declining or approaching its end, especially in a gentle or peaceful way

So, hell yea I'm a believer in this couple! How can anyone not be?!!!!!

@ fan & xylophonic

JS's indifference to SY in a romantic sense could change possibly with a time jump. there is the 2-year deadline that has been proposed. a time jump in the story could contribute to changes in the romantic direction.

anything is truly possible.

heh. i know the path of m a r a (thanks, lahlita) is to just ignore the rumors, believe in the writing, and continue to watch the show, but it seems bluebird is right that a book has been released BASED on the drama. however, calmness and trust in the writer prevail, as there are approximately 11 chapters, and they don't correspond with the episodes; for example, episode 2 is chapter 4 in the book, and episode 5 is actually chapter 8. if it had taken 8 chapters to create 5 episodes, and there are only 11 chapters, then there is no way it would only take 3 more chapters to get to the 16th episode. it appears that the newly released book is incomplete. it might only be the first volume. the book came out just as we've arrived at the halfway mark of the show. over all, the book corresponds to what has been shown in the drama so far. book or no book, go by what director pyo says: let the show self-develop.

@ miaka-chan,

the book is BASED ON THE SHOW, not the other way around. as i've mentioned above, the chapters do not correspond with the episodes. so, i don't think the book is complete. we have yet to find out with whom JS will be romantically paired. if we're going by the chapter titles of the book, it seems rather evident that the novel is only revealing part of the plot, which is only a little more than the halfway mark of the show. i think there might be two books, with the first book treating the story in a sitcom fashion; everything's situational and there's more comedy. i believe the 2nd book will correspond with the show's transition into a miniseries format; this might be what director pyo was saying about episode 12---not necessarily what will unfold but how things will unfold. there would be less situational comedy.

@ M a r a

So this is a real novel? I thought someone only joking in korean forum and someone post in Soompi that have based from the novel. Never know that novel is based from the show. That why i'm still in cool mode. Sincerely, i wasn't really happy when i read that in Soompi about JS going end in this book with SY. You should know that i'm SY/JS shippers and how i keep protect SY/JS couple in soompi ^^. BUT when i came home, open the tread and see this. I'm was a bit scare....
I hate it when is from a novel because PD can make it inverse to novel. So for myself, i keep my cool and waiting June 28 to see in my own eyes the show what going happen. And also, WE LOVE COFFEE HOUSE !! So everyone we keep watch should keep to watch until the end. If EY/JS should be the end, i'm sure we SY/JS shippers keep to watch to know why they end together. PD going to show to us why and explain to us SY/JS shipper why they should to be together EY/JS.

I do really hope EY/JS shippers do the same like us SY/JS <
They should keep watching until the end and wait the explication from the PD why he choose SY/JS couple vs EY/JS shipper.

Maybe after, we each shipper from each ship will understand it and accept the fact and be happy for the couple.

I don't hate EY/JS couple [i will keep said that] but i hope it's will be SY/JS couple for the end.
I'm thinking maybe EY is a new generation a second lead that PD want to introduce to us watchers. Also i think EY/SY can be a lead and a second lead in a same time.

I just feel sometime sad when i read a comment here or soompi that EY/JS shipper can be really rude for the SY/JS couple.

Said like they can't be together because they look like uncle and niece, SY is immature, SY is a stupid girl and no way she can't change....i can write a tons comment like that ...vs us SY/JS shippers. We do [also] write a hatefuls comments [not a lot btw but yes] but it's because we do see EY be jealous in the episode and also EY see the changement from JS with SY presence. So we analyse about why she act like that and that ....The manner when she said that seem a bit .....

Do you never feel like EY can be ''jealous'' or hmmm she seem like annoying about JS changement. When he go out the car to ask SY home phone, when she said about SY could wait him after the funeral........

everything like that make us to said ....hm... EY seem to be ....a second lead ...<
Also ...i'm pretty sure if i write this ...[hateful comment will come after people read this -.-;;] .....
the timescreen ...for EY is more smaller than SY timescreen....

I'm wrong ? Can everyone rewatch all Coffee House episodes ...tell me if what i said is wrong?...

But in a same time, i can't use the argument for to said SY is a lead ....
Because it's could be wrong like ''Style'' serie ...

Everyone, it's can be everything what i write is wrong ^^. So please let's enjoy Coffee House serie!! I don't want hateful reply come after you read this!!!

thank for reading!

Coffee House Hwaiting !!! ^^ and let's keep watching!

@39 ambs,

i agree. if i were to know the ending now, regardless of who ends up with whom, i'd lose interest in watching the show (which is one reason why i cannot bring myself to watch hong gil dong). part of what keeps me tuning in is the uncertainty of the pairings and the suspense that brings and then, having wild, insightful discussions after viewing an episode. i believe this an original story, and it would be unfortunate if a complete book pretty much spoils and contradicts director pyo's statements about not having something solidified but letting a story that develops on its own. i'd like his sentiment maintained; otherwise, it would feel like a broken promise ... lol, as if he personally owes me anything. ;)

there had been several times when i've read writers express that what they initially intended to happen transforms into something else, as the characters and the story respectively just become who they are and what it is. it's as though the story and its characters have come to life and they take over the writing, with the writer simply becoming a medium. i'm not sure i've made that clear ;) to me, this is what the show seems to have become. it seems to have taken an organic process with its storytelling. its progressing its natural path with minor influences or manipulation from the writer and director.

@ miaka-chan,

you should definitely visit this site: http://thekpopnation.com/blog/2010/06/02/kang-ji-hwan-says-coffee-house-is-adventure/

it covers the press conference that, i believe, took place last week. there are interesting insights from the actors regarding their characters and the plot. the director's responses are also very fascinating, and in some ways, very telling. because of that press conference, i don't have complete confidence that the newly released book has revealed everything that will happen in the show.

actually, both EY and SY have been bashed terribly. it's not just SY receiving the sole hate. i've had to turn off the comments on viikii because of the harsh remarks directed at both characters/actresses. some have called EY a stalker and a biatch while SY has been branded as dumb and annoying. just better to ignore those and give attention to those people who have something constructive to contribute in a discussion.

I don't think PSY is a second lead. I don't think KEJ (is that the right initials?) is the second lead.

Why can't BOTH be leads. Why must the one who you think will not end up with JS be instantly relegated to second lead?

As I said before, I think if he's going to end up with anyone, it will be SY. That's just how I see it. I don't see JS/EY couple being written as a couple that is going to end up together. Others will see it differently.

But I don't see why that means PSY is the second lead. There are great story lines of couples that don't end up together. Not every meaningful, deep connection means that it should or will be a good, lasting romantic pairing. That doesn't mean the relationship or connection or storyline is anything less. Rather, I think it makes a better written, more impactful storyline.

Both the females are important to this drama. How, we don't know. But I think what drives this whole drama is actually the history behind the four, JW/EY/JS/wife.

Can I just say something.

I trust the writers. HOWEVER, it turns out, I trust that they are going to write it well. I have my hunch and preference. But that doesn't mean, if it turns out in a way I don't prefer, that all the sudden the writers are not doing a good job.

I am getting that vibe from all the shipper wars. If he ends up with SY, all of a sudden it's suddenly a bad job by the writers. If he ends up with EY, that's a good job. If he ends up alone, bad job. If he ends up with SY, good job. If he ends up with EY, bad job. etc, etc.

I meant I think the history behind the four, and their current interactions now--especially JS/EY-- that's what drives much of this drama.

Well, triple posting.

Also. @mara. How many chapters in the first edition. Are there 11 chapters, or five chapters. If 11 chapters, anyone know what is exactly in chapter 11. What is it that all the sudden is getting people to think the end pairing has been given away. If like @mara has said, it took 8 chapters to even get to episode 5, chapter 11 couldn't have gone past episode 8.

So what exactly made people think it gave a JS/SY ending.

Arghhhhh..........!!!! Did I mention I HATE SPOILERS??!!! Particularly if it does spoil it for me! I'm furious!! How could they!! (BTW: I'm not ranting at you guys who leak it here).

I have nothing agaist SY but the reason why I love KDrama so much is because they are very good in romance. And what make good romance is when the feelings between the characters are strong and deep enough to influence its viewers/readers. And that's why I'm suporting Jin Soo and Eun Young despite the fact that I don't like PSY! I confess I never like her! Not even in CH! There!

I was happy when ambs leak that kissing scene, but I was also afraid because it's only half way to the end and knowing Kdrama it doesn't look good for Jin Soo-Eun Young pairing.

Having said that, if that kissing scence was really that poignant - meaning that both Jin Soo and Eun Young do have strong feelings for each other - (and we all know that they do), how on earth they could twist that into a mistake? That Jin Soo actually love SY instead of Eun Young??!!! How? How?!!

Is it going to be: "Oops sorry, I thought I care for you. But I don't. Thanks for all these years btw. Really appreaciate it."

After learning the spoilers, I could just imagine they will spend the rest of the episodes trying to justify why Jin Soo and SY should be together. Why he doesn't love Eun Young anymore. Why he loves SY instead.

Sucks.

No, regadless of how good CH so far I'm not going to buy its DVDs! This journey is painful enough. If only I have no expectation for this show to be different I would love it. After all SY is the embodiment of my perfect leading lady character. Love all of them in every Kdrama. Except in CH.

I'm heart broken. Would I dare to trust the show to deliver a memorable love story? One that stays in one hearts and mind for a long time? To be honest I want CH to replace Damo in my heart. I hate its ending with a passion, but regardless, the love strory is perfect. I think it's one of the best in KDrama.

Back to CH, the optimist in me say yes I should. But the pragmatist in me scream from the top of its lungs: " No! It's just the same old thing you fool!"

Hiks....hiks...hiks....what should I do now.........hiks hiks..hiks

@ firstimenewbie,

yep. several of us share your sentiment about the two female characters. i know it's others' opinion, but i find it laughable that there's such a limited definition for the female lead: it is whoever ends up with JS (who, successful as he is, currently has the emotional and professional maturity of a five-year-old ... yeah, that's such an ideal bloke) and whoever has more screen time. those criteria are disrespectful to the writer, the actresses and their characters. the characters have so much more substance. they're so much more than merely being defined by a man and the number of times they appear on camera. the writer and the actresses have invested so much into fleshing out their characters, into interpreting them for the viewers. some fans need to broaden and elevate their standards for a female lead.

@ miaki-chan,

thanks, but i'm satisfied just flooding the comments section on dramabeans :) heh. nothing against soompi, but when i've time to kill, i tend to become distracted easily and get hooked on forums. as you can see, i have the most rantings and ravings on here ... i think. i hope not.
