Goong, Iljimae director takes on Playful Kiss adaptation

Okay, now THIS I could really get behind!

When I first heard about the adaptation of Itazura na Kiss for Korean television, I was not impressed — I’m tired of the constant Japanese-manga-to-kdrama efforts, and I was skeptical about Group Eight’s ability to handle it well. The production house’s biggest success to date has been Boys Before Flowers, and they seem to have a particular eye for translating trendy manhwas to television, but for every decent show (Tamra the Island) they’ve had a bomb (Goong S). And we all know that Boys Before Flowers was a success despite numerous flaws.

However! Now director Hwang In-roi has signed on, and that makes me very, VERY excited. Hwang In-roi did Goong and Return of Iljimae, and turned those two projects into sumptuous feasts for the eyes. I didn’t love Goong‘s pacing, but as a work of directing it’s a gorgeous feat, and Return of Iljimae, I’m sure you all know, is one of my favorite dramas ever. Those two dramas, which were both based on manhwas, have breathtaking cinematography and two of the best soundtracks and scores of any kdramas I’ve ever seen. Hwang has a sharp eye and brings out the best in his actors, including a few who were not known for their acting before working with him (Yoon Eun-hye, Joo Ji-hoon, Jung Il-woo), and has a wonderful, delicate touch with emotional beats.

Writing is Go Eun-nim of Bungee Jumping of Our Own, the 2001 film starring Lee Byung-heon and the late Lee Eun-ju.

Playful Kiss (aka Mischievous Kiss) was adapted into a hit Taiwanese drama in 2005, It Started With a Kiss, and was so popular that it produced a sequel series.

The Korean drama version will soon finish casting and begin filming in July, and is aiming for a Fall 2010 broadcast.

Finally news again for ISWAK...I was always searching for this. Thanks JB

Well, what to say ...with this drama I was introduced to the KDrama world. This drama will always have a special place in my heart. I fell in love with Ariel Lin and Joe Chen.
They had such a great onscreen-chemistry, for me this couple is the example for best drama couple.

Later, I saw a nearly as good as chemistry between Cha Seung Won and Kim Sun Ah in City Hall....!

Aaaannnnddddd in TAMNA -The Island !!!!
Yesss I am from Team Park-Kyu, too :)

Well, I have written this before and will repeat me again.

While watching Tamna, I always had this sweet strange feeling, that I know this funny lovely couple Im Ju Hwan & Seo Woo from somewhere...But from where ?

Then one day, I got it...They reminded me in a way of JoeChen and Ariel Lin.

For me, in the Korean version, the couple should be played definately by

................. Im Ju Hwan and Seo Woo ..............

Because Tamna was shortened to 16 episodes, I was ennoyed very much. I felt like dragged away from watching how Seo Woo and Im Ju Hwan was cut of their great acting, interactions.

They played so well together, that we changed from Team William to Park-Kyu.

So, there is an prooven chemistry between Seo Woo and Im Ju Hwan. Compaing them with taiwanese versions great actors, they even suit with their physics and can definately keep up with their great acting or even can do better by giving their own interpretation them.

What makes me wonder is, maybe its my own conspiracy theory, maybe Group8 did shorten Tamna to 16 eps, lessening the scenes of IJH and SW just to save them up for ISWAK K-version ??????

Okey, I am exaggerating...just an thought, wish dreaming....

But if...if IJH and SW will play this couple for ISWAK, you all can be sure that I will go crazy by joy :) :) :)

I truly hope this doesn't mirror the Taiwanese version too much. I really couldn't get into that one due to the fact that they seem to have made the heroine retarded. Perhaps they could spunk her up a bit. I think the adaptation of of BOF was better than the Japanese version (until the last few episodes that is), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the main girl won't be SO dumb, i do know the premise of the story after all.

Um... Kotoko was always pretty dumb, (I think she seems worse because Naoki was so smart) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this story. I've seen all the dramas (the Japanese one was the best so far) and read the manga and seen the anime a million times. I'm not really an anime person, but this one is just so sweet. Yes, the girl is kind of annoying at times, but it's really sweet and a good story so I love it.

I've been wanting a Korean version FOR FOREVER. So I'm so excited and hope it wont take too much production time. I want it now!!! lol

OMG!!! Finally, good news..

I hope Hwang In Roi will cast the perfect actors and actress this time..
Honestly, i'm already disappointed with BOF..
And if i can share my thoughts, Jang Geun Suk won't be involved in this drama porject since he's already got new upcoming project "You're My Pet"..And Lee Minho has just finished filming "Personal Taste", i doubt he'll be involved in this drama since he needs time to take some rest..
I hope Hwang In Roi will choose Jung Ilwoo to be Naoki cuz i can see he will fit the role..And if it's confirmed it will be second collaboration between In Roi and Ilwoo since Return of Iljimae..And as for Kotoko, i think Heo Yi Jae will fit the role..She's not tall but has cheerful image..What do you think guys? :)

LEE MIN HO fits the role perfectly!!! AGHHHHHHHH! Just the way you guys described the lead actor, LEE MIN HO is just the guy that I can imagine to play the role! But I think that'd be impossible since he just finished Personal Taste. Awwwwww. T_T sobs.

I loved the ISWAK couple in the tw version... I also liked it cause it followed the manga pretty closely. Kotoko is pretty dumb and "useless" in the manga as well - as several people have already mentioned. But for the kdrama version - if they spunk her up, I won't mind, since it's an adaptation and doesn't have to be the same. But I think the essence of the manga was that the 2 were such opposites. Kotoko was not smart, not good at sports, not this, not that... but Naoki was good at a lot of stuff - smart, tall, good looking, sports - everyone liked him.

I am looking forward to see what k-version will be like. OH - please don't make the female lead turn out like the one in BOF... she drove me SOOO crazy... really could not get into her at all. Probably as much as what some people stated here in their dislike for ariel's kotoko.

Oooohh...how exciting! I really enjoyed the Taiwanese version so I hope this one will be good too. Yet, I'm skeptical about the cast even though no one has officially been casted yet.

My wish list is of course Kim So Eun and Kim Bum but that's wishing too much. I can't wait to hear more from this!

hey... anyone thinking about how the OST will come out as? i mean. the soundtrack really also makes or break the show as well. the japan 1995 adaptation has this super catchy tune of SPEED and the TW had addictive tunes as well which were really nice. considering how goong and return of ijimae's ost turned out, i am guessing that itazura na kiss's ost would be awesome.. just as long as its not another ALMOST PAARAADIISEEEE....maybe something like perhaps love ... xD

SWAK was my first Taiwanese drama that I love & watch. Usually I'm not that into Taiwan drama but the drama hit start me into loving Taiwanese drama (also i love the anime to bit). I really hope that they will cast the right group of actor & actress. Ariel did an amazing job with her role so I hope whoever is cast get be just as good. But please please don't make the dumber then she already is. I have a feeling Korean version she going to be even dumber or something. ugh! Anyway let hope it will be just as good.

I agree the Director of Goong and ROI is interesting but I'm still weary of the storyline. There no evil mother-in-law, no first love, no social status, everything K-drama storyline are build on. I really didn't think ISWAK could be re made by Korea due to the storyline as a whole. ISWAK is build on the one thing K-drama keep at arm length, no a country distance and that natural intimacy between too people throughout the drama. I have not seen a k-drama yet succeed on that level, what I mean by that is natural intimacy during a skin-ship scene that when you watching the drama you feel like it just you and the leads, TW drama get it! that they specialty that why ISWAK and TKA was so successful. When TW drama do a skin-ship scene they are flawless, The leads come across as if they are the only two people in the room. Where in K-drama SCENE and this my own personal opinion I feel when they do a skin-ship scene immediately you feel that the actors are aware they are in front of 20 members of the casting crew, the awkwardness and embarrassment come across in they stands, body language, right down to the pining of the arms. You watch 9 episode of great acting, well written storyline and it plumbed due to the one scene that suppose too bring it all to a head.

I'm stopping my off the track ranting, I'm getting upset just think about it. I do have to say this, I don't know who the main lead actor would be but it have to be someone that express himself with they eyes, Shi zue nor Ari was big on facial expression. They emotions was display through they eyes. I thought Siwon would be great in this role, too bad he just finished (OML).

As a closing personal opinion I differently wouldn't compare K-drama remake to the TW version that drama was in a league all they own and haven't been challenge yet,(Fated To Love You)come close...hehehe. Even with the surprising skin-ship in ROI the scene still come off stiff. Since Goong kiss still haven't be challenge from it top spot of the hottest kiss EVERY there is hope, that this drama could meet expectations but I will not hold my breath that it would come close to exceeding TW-version.
