Dramabeans Podcast #1

New toy! I’ve been wanting to try a podcast for ages, but lacked the technical wherewithal (and time) to fiddle around with it till now. But I’ve brushed up my techie skills and persuaded girlfriday to join me in this venture, and together we took a stab at our very first Dramabeans podcast.

I apologize in advance for moments when I get too close to the mic — I don’t think it’s TOO bad, or at least I hope it’s not, but I will definitely keep this in mind if/when we try the next one. Also, if you’ve got questions or suggestions for future editions, please feel free to leave them in the comments.

You can listen through the player below, or if you’d like to put it on your mp3 players or take it elsewhere, you can download the sucker: [ Part 1 ] and [ Part 2 ]

We hope you enjoy what we have to say!

Part 1: Wherein javabeans and girlfriday discuss old-school dramas, Feeling, Lee Jung-jae, recapping, cliches and tropes, the dreaded wrist-grab, women and repressed sexuality, Pasta, The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, Kim Bum, Boys Before Flowers, relationships, and Personal Taste:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(Note: It may take a moment to load. You can adjust volume up and down with the bars on the left of the audio player.)

Part 2: Wherein javabeans and girlfriday discuss Personal Taste and Cinderella’s Sister (through Episode 12, although with very few if any spoilers for later episodes), and Sandglass very briefly:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

First of all, congrats on your first podcast. I really enjoyed the discussion between Javabeans and GirlFriday. A couple of suggestions: I find the background songs distracting. perhaps too loud and instrumental might have been a better choice. For your subsequent podcast, it would be nicer if it's a bit shorter but I understand being that this is your podcast 'premiere'

To reiterate your point about "sanitized" society and how the korean films are such complete opposite of dramas. I remember my first encounter with Korean film, I almost fell off my chair and was in complete shock how liberal and uncensored the film was. I thought it was so worse than Hollywood in terms of sexual innuendos and advances. of course, I am numb now hehe..

I find that I am learning more about Javabeans and Girlfriday through this podcast. Javabeans, you sound younger that I thought. For some reasons, I assumed that you had a family (married with kids), not a young professional-ish.
it's interesting that you guys appear to write "older" than you really are hahaha..it's a compliment!

Keep it up, guys! and Thank you for your hardwork.

LOL i'm with deeper ^: i was expecting ya'll to have a deeper voice, i dunno why.. maybe coz you guys sound so... asian?! lol, i mean that descritively! i'm asian american too! lols! haha i can't describe it, the small but firm voices with the enunciation-that's-way-better-than-an-actual-american's which probably gets ya'll underestimated a lot-- well, it's true for me, anyway. hehehe :D

anywaaaay LOL
THIS IS 10 KINDS OF AWESOMEBEANS!!!!
-the alcohol drinking-- hey, don't knock it: drama-watching is one of the best avenues for drinking games, okay?! hehehehe

-the udeng!! i'm not korean (but asian) and street food is canon in our part of the world, so i was one of those people who went to korea and asked for udeng and pojongmachas (sp?) and the soju and the samgyupsal and jjajjangmyun and chapchae and korean popsicles YUM YUM YUM! i went to korea and i had just watched coffee prince.. you can imagine i wanted to eat everything eun chan ate. :D

-the smoking? ..i noticed that too! last one i saw was in Devil (Mahwang)

-the wrist grab, wrist DRAG. it truly IS lazy writing!! girlfriday's right: people have to find new ways to express the stuff implied in the wrist grab. tsk tsk. it's annoying that it's a NON-issue, like writers don't get how that can be offensive sometimes. O_o

this was great., guys!!! :) well done!

Thanks so much Javabeans for these podcasts, it was great being able to place a voice to a name and I loved hearing what you lovely ladies had to say. I've been enjoying reading your thoughts during your recaps so it was even more fun to listen to you discuss the dramas that we all know and love. Thanks for all that you do to make your blog such a relaxed, comfortable place where we can all interact and gush about our loves for k-dramas and life in general. ;)

JB, the podcast is totally cool! I like it for some of the topics that you're discussing can't be really put down in writing, so it's always refreshing to hear the other side of what we've been reading (the recaps, I mean...).. Look forward for more of it ;)...

Thank you ladies for the podcast! Can I just say I LOVED that you talked about Feelings?! Soooo old school I love love love it! Gosh I wanna watch it now!

Food scenes! I'm not Korean and I've been going to Korean restaurants weekly because I watch Kdramas! I just point to random items on the menu, hoping for pleasant surprises! =)

Have a great weekend!

LOVED IT! Please do more of this.

Love your voices, a soprano and an alto I think. Yes, would be nice to put faces to names and voices. That's what my husband asked when he heard your voices... where are their faces?

And I'm behind the clamor for samsooki.

Would be nice to have one on Prosecutor Princess with the recappers and javabeans.

And the reference to the sound track of Coffee Prince. I have downloaded all I could get my hands on for that drama' music and they're all lovely. No other drama has matched the variety and number of music used in 17 episodes. CP barely repeated the same music unlike the rest where the same music keeps playing over and over. They're all nice, just too repititive.

This is indeed a pleasant suprise... on a cold Sunday afternoon down here in NZ.

Cheers!

this was awesome! thanks so much! p.s. is that kim tae woo song from Personal Taste new, i.e. is there a part 2 OST coming out? i really hope so cos there's a song that i've been desperately trying to find but keep failing... the one that plays in episode 7 and 8 during the coffee shop scenes with Sangjun and Youngsun and Kaein, Jinho and Eunsoo. Any ideas, Javabeans?

I'm so sorry, this is completely off-topic, but I have to do it! ..blame small country syndrome:

@13
Hey, you're from Wellington?? Christchurch represent! I think there must be quite a few Kiwis following k-dramas and dramabeans huh? Every now and then I'll see a post that mentions NZ and I'll feel all excited for some reason. I think it definitely has to be the small country thing. Maybe we should start a 'bring k-dramas to New Zealand television' petition or something =p

LOL, not being Korean, I sometimes forget that this is just a representation of Korean culture/people and start assuming everyone must take their battery out of their phone when they don't want to talk to someone who keeps calling them or you can make u-turns anywhere on the road in Korea (something I'm assured is not true) and its so great to hear two people with Korean heritage give us insight on the culture as it is represented (in a vacuum, no doubt).

(I'm going to sound like both of you here in your criticism of PT, but sometimes the music was a tad bit distracting- sometimes I was distracted by the music and had to strain to pay attention- other than that, I look forward to many more podcasts!)

WOW. JUST WOW! was my reaction. Thank you so much! This is awesomely creative and must have taken a lot of time to do. You both are spoiling us k-drama addicts, I mean, "enthusiasts." At first, the left/right speaker thing did throw me off but then I got used to it and actually came to like it a lot because it made me feel like I was part of the conversation.

I totally agree about JB's comment regarding the drama that Personal Taste could have been, at Coffee Prince level, with a different music director and PD because my goodness, sometimes the random songs thrown in here and there are all sorts of distractions. The point is further reinforced in my mind when I think about what it is about Coffee Prince that makes me love that drama so much because if that show had a different team behind the scenes, I don't think my love for it would be so high just on story and competent acting/chemistry alone. This goes both ways, of course. I mean, look at Triple. Good PD, check. Awesome music, check. Writing, eh...

Anyway, I echo everyone's sentiments and look forward to MOAR! :)

I learned so much about Korean dramas - I love the ones that I call fantasy, which is most of them. It was fun listening to you both. I hope you do this again.

Every other month, or quarterly might give you enough drama fodder to work with. I will certainly look forward to your next installment.

Sarah & Girlfriday, I luv this new toy...keep them coming!!!! I totally enjoy listening to your candid discussion on kdrama development...how I wish I could join in with soju and what not. You're so right, watching kdrama make me yearn for Korean food though I'm not Korean but still, after coming back from gym late yesterday, I want ramyun and kimchi for supper (after watching Kae-In so enjoying it)..it's so satisfying.

And I can't agree more with women and their repressed sexuality. Yes, we may not want aggressive womanlike Lady Gaga in kdrama but I think women should allow to show their sexual desire at least. Why should woman always the chasten one? Yes, we are Asian and we are still conservative but we do have our desire, don't we? And I'm so pleased with recent development in modern drama like PT and PP. It was like both trying to score higher rating with some real kissing, not mere jaw locked!

My gratitude for bringing the subject of PT into this podcast. Its so timely and I so want to talk about it or at least hear about it. And both of you are so right, PT has some CP goodness in it. Thank you and really, I totally enjoyed the podcast...do it more often!!!

Hahahaha you guys are great. :D I'm assuming both of you are Korean, because you guys mentioned (or at least girlfriday did) about watching old dramas with parents. It may be a bit shallow of me, but you guys are totally the only other Korean people I know who speak English without an accent (and yet pronounce all the Korean names correctly)!! It makes me a bit happy inside.

I hope you guys do another one and am looking forward to it!!

Ooh, I figured out how to merge the left-right issues! I didn't realize how much of a pain that would be, so I'm reuploading the files -- the new versions should have both voices coming out of both sides and some sound levels readjusted! Thanks for the feedback, it helps in knowing what needs work.

But why it stopped like in the middle of the conversation? The first podcast stopped where you talked about repressed sexuality and the second is right about boys before flower.
I want to hear all... can anybody tell me what's the problem?

Java Beans and Girl Friday,

Really enjoyed your podcast! It was so nice to be able to hear you guys talk about the issues that you discuss in your recaps and just in general about podcast. It reminds me of when I got two of my good friends to start watching K-dramas and the discussions we had after we would watch a drama. Please keep them coming! I always enjoy hearing your perspective about the dramas you get me addicted to with your recaps! :)

Thumbs up for both JB & girlfriday! It's so nice to hear both your voice, to get a step closer to the one who wrote a lot of wonderful recaps.

I always recommend this website to friends who love K-dramas because I love to read your recaps and watch the drama.

I'm glad The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry was mentioned because it is a great great drama that unfortunately suffered poor ratings.

Anyway I'm looking forward to your next podcast and hopefully you will discuss You're Beautiful. The drama many of us have been stalking you every Thursday and Friday back then. lol!

One big question I have for K-drama, when they don't want to pick up a call, why do they always have to take out the battery instead of just pressing the off button on their phone? Is that solely for effect? O.O

Awesome job! I really enjoyed the podcast, and look forward to more in the future. I especially appreciated two things in your recent podcast:

1. Thanks for reminding people that not all k-dramas are like Autumn Fairy Tale or Winter Sonata. My biggest pet peeve is when a k-drama newbie starts typecasting all k-dramas to be about leukemia, amnesia, switched at birth, etc when there are so many other options out there.

2. Sigh, Lee Jung Jae in Sandglass and Neukkim~~ My first love!

Thank you for giving us such a treat! You're so right about the reputations of K-drama as just tragic love story of either the fatal disease and/or incestuous kind. This is the reasons why despite my getting into K-entertainment, I stayed pretty far away from K-drama still. But I found your site and love reading your thoughtful and often amusing thoughts on dramas and it make me curious to want to watch them.

"Still, Marry Me" was my first foray into a complete viewing of K-drama ( I got some glimpses watching "Winter Sonata" and whatnots, which all convinced me I wasn't missing out much) and while it wasn't perfect, I'm glad that was the drama that "devirginized" me so to speak. And I was glad that you and girlfriday were there along the way with me. Which ok that sounds creepy but you know what I mean. :)

As for the podcast, the music was a nice touch and fine to me but like others, I think it's b/c I turn my volume up pretty loud. As to some suggestions here about having more format to your podcast, I don't recommend it. I think it works fine the way you guys run it now with I'm guessing a loose guidelines of topics but nothing rigid so that you can meander and have your other thoughts as well. I like this loose informal structure b/c it's more interesting narrative wise for me.

For a future idea of podcast, it would be great if you guys can do like a Q/A thing with readers submitting questions that you guys choose to answer :)

Thanx again for everything.

You guys have done an amazing job Javabeans and Girlfriday! Have been an avid follower of your blog for a while now and have always looked forward to each new post =) nice to finally put a voice to the names! (though I too, must agree that I imagined that you would both sound different for some reason - probably because the insight you provide into the experience of k-drama watching is so awesomely insightful and mature). Reading your re-caps totally enhances the dramas imho.

Listening to the podcasts reminds me of listening to mainstream radio talks or something, which is so awesome! Feels like I'm talking to a group of friends about k-dramas =)

Currently so addicted to PT and CS! acting is spot on- SYJ and LMH have done wonderfully but i totally agree with the completely mistimed music cues and direction in PT. sometimes the music cuts off in the most awkward passages and it's just so random... Also agree on the relationship halt issue in CS.. it would've been nice to see some gestures that re-affirmed EJ and KH feelings for each other besides them saying they hate each other and crying about it later lol. having said that acting in CS is superb. MGY is a-ma-zing, and CJM is soooo adoorable! =D

Thank you so much for keeping up the blog javabeans !!! I always LOVE reading what you and girlfriday (and all other contributors) have to say. Keep up the amazing work. =D

Awesome podcast Javabeans and Girlfriday!!! Thank you for allowing us to hear your beautiful voices. You both sound much younger than I thought. It would be nice to see your faces, too someday but I personally would advise you to think about posting your photos on the internet. Value your privacy.
Love your comments about the food and the drinking. I'm not Korean but I buy Korean food every now and then to satisfy my craving. I'm curious to how Soju taste like. Got to check the liquor stores here in Vancouver if they have it.
Without reading all your recaps yet on the dramas that I have watched (having found you only recently), I did notice early on in KDramas what you had talked about - the drinking, the wrist/arm grabbing, the lead actor kissing and hugging a statue (since the lead actress has no reaction whatsoever), bloodlines and evil backstabbing villain - and yet, I was able to watch some dramas until the end. It was as you say, "entertaining." No other profound reason.
You were also right about Pasta, I stopped watching it after the 8th or 10th episode. It was too painful to finish.
It's good to see SYJ in PT show some participation in the hugging and kissing. LMH has improved in his acting - love at how his eyes talk. Such a handsome young man. I am looking forward to read your re-caps on the last 2 episodes (I hope!). I am for not extending this drama. Please, please keep it at 16 episodes!
I have to say that I am soooo glad my husband understands my "enthusiasm" for KDramas even though he just can't relate. He is my "personal taste."
More power to both of you young ladies!

I'm loving it..like hearing a favorite radio broadcast which I haven't done for a while.

Other posters said they've surprised with your voices, but i guess i've been prepared ( ha! it does sound weird! ), but girlfriday's voice is definitely like what i've been imagining...

Keep it coming, i really like it!!! I wish I have girlfriends who are also Kdramas enthusiasts like you, because my friends are not that addicted with dramas and they always call me and my kdramas obsessions are crazy things.
