Drama series The Musical casts its leads
by javabeans
Gu Hye-sun, Daniel Choi, Ok Joo-hyun, Park Kyung-lim
The lineup is firming up for the upcoming drama series The Musical, with two members of its main cast confirmed and two others having made verbal agreements. The first two are Gu Hye-sun (Boys Before Flowers) and Daniel Choi (High Kick Through the Roof), while the latter two are musical actress Ok Joo-hyun and MC Park Kyung-lim.
This comes after Gu and Choi attended a musical together in April, which drew some notice and turns out to have been one of Ok’s performances in the musical Monte Cristo. The Musical has only been vaguely described as a “musical drama” that tells the story of the dreams and loves of musical actors.
A source explained that in addition to these name stars, the drama will feature talented new faces. The lead actors will attend an overnight MT (membership training) and workshop on May 27-28, which will be a bonding activity as well as a chance for them to discuss the finer points of the plot and characters.
This seems like a decent lineup, given the musical talents of those involved (I’m not sure of Daniel Choi, but I’m assuming he’s got a musical side). As you probably know, Gu Hye-sun intended to debut as a singer and has put out an album of new age music that she composed. Furthermore, her directorial effort Magic, which releases next month, is set in a school school for the arts with students who study music. After gaining her start as a pop singer of girl group Fin.K.L. in the ’90s, Ok Joo-hyun has successfully reinvented herself as a musical actress. If her casting is finalized, this would be her drama debut, though she has already accrued some stage experience in productions of Chicago, Cats and Monte Cristo. Park Kyung-lim had a successful run starring in a musical production of Hairspray last year.
Although The Musical doesn’t yet have a broadcast station or an airdate, it is looking to premiere in the latter half of the year on KBS. However, I’m greatly curious to see how this fares with another musical-themed drama, What’s Up, also in the works. What’s Up also has yet to find a broadcaster but comes with a lot of buzz for its star writer (Song Ji-nah) and cast of rising stars (Im Joo-hwan, Daesung, Im Joo-eun).

I know she is popular - but I have noticed that she falls short at the end of the drama... like the last couple of episodes she's just not there - her mouth is moving and her body is walking around but she's just checked out somehow. Her pizazz is gone - it's like deja vu with the scenes - just different set -
Fan's please forgive me, but I've noticed this in more than one drama.
Thanks,

Nah. I don't think Korea wants to create their own "Glee" or even had Glee in mind at all. It's all about trends. First one or two musical-centered dramas come into the making, then it gains attention and a few follow others start coming along. K-pop/K-dramaland tend to go by "trends". Hence, every year you'll get a batch of similar dramas/music in mainstream before a new trend goes up and everyone follows that trend.
Therefore it's not exactly that they have "Glee" in mind, it's just the general topic of musicals have been becoming popular.
I believe GHS is not a bad actress, it's just that she needs to find the right roles that fit her acting style naturally.

I couldn't help but cringe when I saw that Gu Hye Sun was in another drama. Her mumbling or maybe slight lisp annoys the heck out of me. Oh well, might be worth a try.

:(((( The leads are a little disappointing...
I wasn't really expecting anything much from this drama but now that GHS is going to be in it, my interest is zero. Daniel Choi is a cutie but I'm not too excited about him either....

I hope they sing in it ^_^
I also hope it'll be as good as FOX's Glee (as much as kdramas differ from american, Glee is the #1 drama in America) It's time for Korea to get some Glee styled scripts >_<
A korean glee would surely be successful if you ask me, just as long as people don't relate the two continously and compare it continously, as I think Fox's would win.

wow finally, a new drama for GHS! I totally adore her... she's multi-talented and I'm happy that she will not just act but also sing in this project..
More power to GHS!

I wouldn't categorize Glee as a musical, since glee clubs just sing random songs anyway, and musicals involve a story that are mostly sung.
I don't mind GHS, I can see what she was doing in Boys over flowers which came out as overacting at points, but hopefully she'll show a different side of her in this drama.

Cool, something a lil bit different! I never knew Park Kyung Lim had a musical side! It'll be interesting to see-she's pretty funny on the variety shows. I've heard about Daniel Choi but haven't seen him (except for CF's). And as for GHS, I think this would be a good role for her bcuz she wanted to debut as a singer & we know that she likes music. Ahh, comments about her BOF acting again...she's still young so there's always room for improvement. I would watch this!

While I do think Gu Hye-sun is likable, she is, in my opinion, a little over-hyped. She has skills in art, music, and acting, but she needs improvement in all those areas. She is like a jack of all trades but master of none. I'd like to see her settle down to one specific area and improve on that particular skill rather than jumping to and from different areas, all the while never reaching to a higher level expertise.
All in all, The Musical sounds interesting and could be a fun watch.

@17,
I think all her endeavors are interrelated so I don't think she's jumping from one different area to another. Acting, singing, directing, writing, and drawing are all arts related. I think all these different interests can actually help her improve as an actress, because she does need to improve. As a director, it will give her a different perspective in acting - which can only help her improve as an actor. Writing, singing and drawing are all different methods to expressing one's feelings and emotions - which can be a valuable asset to understanding how a character should be portrayed.
I actually don't think she's overhyped at all. No one is claiming that she is a great actress. She just gained a lot of popularity and attention, as well as the F4 boys, because of the success of BBF.
Anyways, this drama doesn't sound interesting to me. Not into musicals at all.

I think you make a great point. GHS is no doubt a talented girl, and I think if she focused on one thing she will do great. She has potential in acting, but she hasn't had much luck in her roles in her past dramas. In BOF her character was borderline crazy! In "Strongest Chil Woo" the character was a little boring, though I liked that the lead female in the drama was actually involved in the whole plot thing, even though she was a damsel in distress for the whole first half. I think her role in "King and I" was her best. It was a side of her I've never really seen before. Towards the end of the whole thing her character became so scary, and GHS's acting made me cringe (in a good way) because I was so scared for the queen knowing what was gonna happen to her later. Anyway, this role should suit her well, she gets to do what she really loves.

Really not crazy at all about Daniel Choi. Other than the fact that we don't know anything about his musical background, he simply doesn't excite me with his acting
