Seo Woo: Taking on the Big and Small Screen
by girlfriday
Seo Woo’s star is rising, and it’s not hard to see why. Currently, she’s taking on the thankless role of Hyo-sun, aka Cinderella, in KBS2’s Wednesday-Thursday drama Cinderella’s Sister, the foil to Moon Geun-young’s lauded evil stepsister. In the midst of both criticism and praise for her portrayal, she’s set to overthrow her detractors with her skill as a chameleon.
In The Housemaid, starring Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Jung-jae, Seo Woo is the young ingenue who will have to battle it out with one of Korea’s top actresses for Lee Jung-jae’s heart. And from what we’ve seen of her chops as Cinderella, this young woman can put up a fight.
Seo Woo in “Tamra, the Island” and “Paju”
Seo Woo debuted in 2007’s Son, where she showed her face for all of one minute as the main character’s girlfriend. It was a short debut but the impression was strong enough for directors Park Chan-ok and Lee Kyung-mi to notice her and cast her in the film Crush and Blush. That season Seo Woo swept the newcomer awards and expectations rose. She said modestly: “I don’t know if it’s okay for me to be accepting such an award.”
She followed that success with the film Paju and the drama Tamra, The Island, receiving critical praise for her broad range, and earning yet another award. But being on the fast track means you don’t always come up smelling like roses.
Since the start of Cinderella’s Sister, Seo Woo has tread the very treacherous line between scalding criticism and lofty acclaim. Viewers felt no love for the overly sweet Hyo-sun at the start of the series, which the producers defended as necessary for her later character development. They said, “Seo Woo has delivered 100% the character that we asked for.” But they add that the character will go through major changes, a little of which we’ve seen in the latest episodes to date.
In “Cinderella’s Sister”
Seo Woo began to show a little bit of that change at the end of Episode 3, when she turned on her beloved unni and cried out, “Get out, you beggar!” gluing all viewers’ eyes on her. The character eight years hence is now transformed into a chic young woman ready to give Moon’s character a run for her money. Seo Woo’s portrayal of that transformation is earning viewers’ trust that the earlier characterizations were a necessary evil.
With one battle already underway, Seo Woo steadies herself for the next. In The Housemaid, she has to stand toe to toe with Jeon Do-yeon, known famously in Korea as the Queen of Cannes. With the attitude that sharing a screen with the best can only raise the level of her game, Seo Woo worked tirelessly on the role. Producers said of her: “She came with the acting skills of a veteran, not a newcomer, and held her own with Jeon Do-yeon.”
The Housemaid, set to release May 13, is already holding everyone’s expectations high as they await the call of Cannes with bated breath. Meanwhile, Seo Woo is busy filming Cinderella’s Sister, and will unlikely be able to attend. But as an actress merely four years from her very short debut, that’s a dilemma she’d love to have.

While I agree that we have to separate the character from the actor, I'll have to disagree about the "badness" of Hyo-Sun and Eun-Jo. For the most part, viewers don't 'hate' Eun-Jo because although she is cold and aloof, she has never done anything conniving or deceiving to hurt another, especially a family member. (She did end up hurting Hyo-Sun about the flowers she received in high school but it was the truth-- that boy liked Eun-Jo, not Hyo-Sun. )
Hyo-Sun, on the other hand, knowingly and maliciously has lied and schemed against Eun-Jo: not giving Eun-Jo the goodbye letter from Ki-Hoon; telling her that she was dating Ki-Hoon in order to hurt her (what the heck??).
To me, this character is more hateful b/c she schemes and her actions are motivated by pure jealousy. While we can sympathize with Eun-Jo and her lack of vulnerability and softness toward others b/c of her rough background, Hyo-Sun has no excuse. She grew up privileged, spoiled, and as the center of the universe. What's her excuse for conniving and lying?... That's right....It's because she didn't get her way.

I never really like her face, but acting-wise, she's really good. More than good than any other actresses around her age who somewhat seem like being overrated, if I may add.

@mimi,
but u must take into account that, even EJ never did anything conniving, what she did nevertheless hurting other. repeatedly harsh words, despise look to others (especially family members!) hurt so much more, even worse. would u like to try?
and bear in mind, that what HS did, is the result of EJ's act towards her. she would never be this HS if EJ didnt treat her (as a sister) like a shit. and dont u see that she lied to EJ that she were dating just so that EJ ask her something? she didnt really meant to lie, she just want EJ to break the ignorant wall and ask her something instead.

That make me laugh to see some comments about an actress , guys she's not her character !!! but l really don't like the hipocrisy of ppl who can forgive EJ to be so cruel towards ppl and blame HS because she's too nice....Afterwise they blame her cause she 's too bad...What do you really want from her character ????
She became this way because of EJ, we viewers know EJ story but HS does not, the hatred she feels for EJ is the consequence of EJ attitude towards her, if you hate someone, you would NOT GIVE THE LETTER EITHER!!!!! you need to stop and give a break to HS cause she's human , it's getting annoying , she's bad....OK Maybe, but EJ is BAD too, she hurt ppl and they want to hurt her back= human nature!!! SW is so hated , l guess she's a great actress !! kuddos to her !!!!

HS (8 YEARS) put to SILENT emotional sufferings from her step mother and step sister very cruel behaviour and attitude that I missed HS greeting when she came running home from school "Hye sun is home" it is not her home anymore. HS father doting on EJ and Junsu add more "wasabi" to her sweet and gentle character that the end product, she develop irrational actions, How old is HS when his father got married again 12 or 13 years old (grade 1 korean education), right ?.
Seo Woo did good acting for a child age because she is 25 years old right?.
Although EJ love KH and did not read the parting words (LETTER) from KH, why must she scowled with those nasty words towards her boyfriend ?,

in CS, it looks like only EJ is allowed to say cruel things and hurt others. heh!!! >_> .. be more open minded. i dont think the story want us to hate HS and love EJ, but to understand the complicity of human nature and feelings.

@Betsy: No, Hyo Sun was Grade 1 High School when her father remarried, so she would be about 16 years old.
@mimi: Intent and actions are not always the same. Hyo-sun lied, but it wasn't out of malice. It wasn't out to deliberately hurt Eun-jo.
I despise it when people use the excuse that one is a spoiled brat, so all her actions are out of jealousy. Exactly how many times did she lie? The letter? An immature 16 year old girl who is suddenly living with an cold outsider, who deliberately back stabbed her a few days earlier..... She was a teenager that made a mistake. A decade later, still gonna hold that against her? Or when she lied she was dating Ki-hoon, did you even listen to her monologue? Was it really out of spite with malicious intentions?
Think about it: you grow up in a nice household, and suddenly BAM. Some strange girl that treats you the same as dirt, no even a polite hello for goodness sake, and you have to put that up for YEARS. Years later, it's no longer "you annoy me". It's become "listen to what I say or else I'll use your father's money to do stuff" in a cold way.
We all know that Eun-jo cares somewhat about Hyo-sun, but she still puts her down in negative talk. And you expect Hyo-sun to put up with that will angelic smiles 24/7 and still go "Unni~~~~~ I love you still~!".
What the heck does that have to do with her background of being privileged? Regardless of whether she lived nice or not, anyone who has to suffer the negativeness that Eun-jo inflicts upon Hyo-Sun daily would hold some type of resentment. Not only that, she's feeling used and forgotten by the people she holds dearly to her - that type of pain is very hard to deal with for a lot of people. It's not out of mere fact that she can't handle sharing love or attention.
Of course, everyone deals with certain circumstances and emotions in different ways. Hyo-sun hasn't matured, and the way that she responds is a way like a little girl trying to protect what's hers. It's not out of malice or absolute hatred, but this is Hyo-sun desperate to grab something and not lose it forever. While I don't justify Hyo-sun's hatred, people don't always hate because they want to hate.
"While we can sympathize with Eun-Jo and her lack of vulnerability and softness toward others b/c of her rough background, Hyo-Sun has no excuse"
Or does Eun-jo's past excuse her actions? Because no matter what Eun-jo's past is, that doesn't change any of the fact that her actions are still rude and cause a negative impact on those around her.

Eun-Jo's background doesn't "excuse" her aloofness but what I said was that it helped us understand or sympathize with her character. Her lack of any real parental figure, affection, or trust with anyone growing up sheds light to her self-defensive attitude. Does it excuse her actions now that she's an adult? I say, no.
But what I was getting at was that with Hyo-Sun, she grew up knowing love and being the center of her Daddy's world (and his successful business). Her lying to Eun-Jo is driven by jealousy and that's plain to see. She lied and withheld that letter b/c she was jealous that Ki-Hoon liked Eun-Jo. And now, she's sees her father is impressed with Eun-Jo and her involvement with the company - that's still jealousy the way I see it.
Being aloof or telling someone to be quiet (EJ's actions) is different as night and day from lying to someone that you're dating person B in revenge or failing to give a goodbye note you knew was critical (HS's actions).

Okay, so two incidents. TWO INCIDENTS. The point is, I don't understand the point of saying that Hyo-sun plans malicious actions towards Eun-jo based on two incidents and forever labeling Hyo-sun as a complete bad-spirited person. That doesn't make any sense at all.
Hyo-sun hiding the letter could have been her emotional response of being back stabbed by the person you've been treating so nicely and perhaps yes, because of her closeness to Ki-Hoon. Hiding the letter might not have been what Hyo-sun truly intended to do, yet could have been influenced by her current emotions and state of mind.
Okay, perhaps it was driven by jealousy. But you know, jealousy is sometimes a part of human characteristics. In fact, I never knew a woman who wasn't jealous of another woman being around her lover. Yeah, Hyo-sun did something unfavorable. Are we still going to bring up a mistake a 16 year old kid in love, even though 8 years have past?
"Being aloof or telling someone to be quiet (EJ’s actions) is different as night and day from lying to someone that you’re dating person B in revenge or failing to give a goodbye note you knew was critical (HS’s actions)."
Gah, again. Your holding a person up against what she did as a teenager a decade ago. Her lie about dating had no malicious intent if you listened to her monologue, nor do I believe it was so calculatedly planned all along. Nor do I recall Eun-jo only telling Hyo-sun to be simply quiet, as she has inflicted verbal abuse.
Humans aren't perfect. Eun-jo isn't perfect. Hyo-sun isn't perfect. Yes, she made a few mistakes in life. So what if Hyo-sun doesn't have the best of traits? So what if she can get jealous? Or is it that because she never experienced pain like Eun-jo and that she grew up loved that she has no right to be upset at a person who treats her unfairly, and can't even experience humanistic traits found in most humans of being jealous when someone you don't like appears to be "stealing" those that are extremely close? Those feelings that don't appear because a person 'wants' to feel them, but naturally occurs? Does that make her officially a spoiled, jealous brat that only has time to whine and do malicious acts?
Is Hyo-sun going about every day plotting malicious attacks against Eun-jo? Does she snicker at Eun-jo every time she sees her? Does she put down Eun-jo in words every day? Did she neglect to gather first-aid when Eun-jo's nose bled? Did she not smile at Eun-jo when she believed Eun-jo was being sincere to her? When she could have broken Eun-jo's liquor jar, did she?
Or is the fact that she got upset and yelled at Eun-jo at the hospital also label her off as a bad girl? To be frustrated and pour out everything that's been bottled up, because even though tears are coming out, one STILL has to comment so snarky?
Is it that a lot of people are so used to second-female leads in K-dramas to always be "evil", that just because Hyo-sun is a second lead, it's automatic that she's some bad girl? Look around of the people around yourself. Does everyone have perfect, angelic traits? Hasn't there been a time you made a mistake? Got in a fight with your sibling or roommate, got upset and lied before, got jealous a few times, became so fustrated that you ended up shouting all your feelings even though you didn't always mean it... Whatever a person's background/past is, these are actions that a lot of us has done before.
I'd hate it seriously if I made several mistakes, and I know I don't have the best of personalities, but to have people criticize me because of a some mistakes I've done and label me off as some "bad girl". That because of a few mistakes I've done, I'd be scared to make a mistake in the future again just to have people say, "See, she is truly a malicious, spiteful person. She made those mistakes before, and look! She did something wrong again, only further proving that she's just a girl filled up with jealous and hatred. And did you see? She did something 8 years ago, and even though almost a decade has past, this incident has proven again like 8 years ago that she's a girl that can't control her jealousy."

I'm surprised that people are praising SW's acting in CS.
The first few episodes were nearly unwatchable for me due to SW's horrible, overacting (also, her eyes can look pretty freaky).

"" Is it that a lot of people are so used to second-female leads in K-dramas to always be “evil” ""
i guess people has this mind set up from the beginning of the drama. so everything HS did, they try to figure out the nastiest reason for it and sometimes even hallucinate bad things about her.
anyway SW is a very talented actress. it was very unusual for a person who just started up her career 3 years ago and could catch up with Cannes award winner. actually i could feel her talent from the first time i watched her in crush and blush. she's just an AMAZING actress.

I think Seo Woo is one of those TALENTED young Korean actress who has a lot to offer. Although I've only seen her in Cinderella's sister, her portrayal of the role of Cinderella is SUPERB!
At first, i think her 'childish' role is cute and perfect for the cliche` attitude of the lead female roles in korean dramas (contemporary or sae-guk). Later on, her character development into something more complicated or in an essence mature is portrayed with passion and a whole bunch of RAW talent.
I love young actresses like her!

Love is just love and hate is just hate. There are no set equations and formulas to these subjective feelings. These feelings are so personal that others may not and do not need to see eye for eye the reason behind it.
I understand there are people who love, praise, and defend her acting and appearance but I side with the other camper. I find her overacting unbearable and plastic face annoying. Well that is just my two cents (opinion).
The world is fill with beautiful colors and does not need to conform to just one color (opinion).

yes, beauty lies at the eyes of beholder. just like some people could see the pretty SHK, or HGI, or KTH as ugly, of course some people could see her ugly.
to me, she sure is very cute & pretty. at times, she looks so adorably cute that i want to pinch her hard. at some other times she looks so elegantly pretty. she's not only blessed with looks, but also with talent. i believe she'll make a big name just in short time.

"I totally agree with you! However, I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is also two sides to a coin."
Too a certain point.
For instance, why I don't find Lee Young-ae or Kim Hee-sun attractive, I can still see why others may do so.
Even Ko So-young does little for me (attractive objectively, but in a bland sort of way).
As for SW, she can look pretty at times and I can see how others may find her attractive; but there's no denying that her eyes can look weird more often than not.
Anyway, I have more doubts about SW's acting ability (but maybe she improved over the course of CS as she no longer has to play a schoolgirl).

Her acting in Cinderella Sister is weird. It's not natural at all. Yes, she looks young but too much crying and cutesy voice when she talks made me cringe. There's something in her voice that make me cringe. Maybe because of her nose job?
