Hong Sisters’ Gumiho drama set for August premiere
by javabeans
After writing such beloved, zesty dramas as You’re Beautiful and Hong Gil Dong, the Hong sisters are coming back with a fantasy drama called My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho (a mythical nine-tailed fox), which has nabbed a slot in SBS’s upcoming schedule. It’ll take up the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot following the upcoming Kim Sun-ah ajumma-rock-band vehicle I Am Legend (which follows Prosecutor Princess).
The story features Lee Seung-gi as a somewhat wimpy dude who falls in love with a gumiho, which is a classic character in Korean folklore who looks human but eats organs to stay alive. He therefore lives in fear that she will steal his liver, unable to share his worries with his friends who all think he’s the luckiest guy alive to have such a gorgeous girlfriend. The female lead has not yet been selected, and producers are in the later stages of casting her.
This drama had been announced rather early in the process; initial news trickled out almost immediately after they’d finished You’re Beautiful last fall and the details were confirmed in the spring when they cast Lee Seung-gi as their lead. Unlike their other dramas, this one will be largely produced in advance. (Most of their other dramas have filmed at the frenetic pace that accompanies the live-shoot practice, which results in shows being filmed the week they air on television. Hong Gil Dong, as a larger-scale period drama, did begin filming months in advance, but toward the end they were still shooting as the drama aired.)
I’m very curious to see if advance production will affect the drama for the better — and whether this will allow the writers time to smooth out the angsty wrinkles that so often appear in their last few episodes. Regardless, the Hong sisters have a great track record and wonderful comic flair, so I’ll be watching for sure.

hwan-ah!!!! *SQUISH* he's so cute i love him *more flailing over adorable*
now that i have that out of my system, i'm really excited about the female lead, and adorable as his, how likeable and good the drama turns out will probably all rest on her shoulders, what with playing such a character. will resist major excitement until she has been cast. at least she'll have more balls than minam! <3

The combination of the Hong Sisters and Lee Seung-gi is a dream come true. He still has a ways to go as an actor, but he has wonderful potential and I can definitely see him as a wimpy guy in love with a gumiho.
This is wonderful--a drama I'm really looking forward to following another one I'm super-excited about (I Am Legend), as well as two I love right now!!! What more could a girl want? =]

I'll definitely be watching too! In my experience with Hong dramas, the watchability is completely dependent on the leads (since we already know we're in for an addictive, hilarious treat based on the writing). HGD was loads of fun from beginning to end thanks to the three great leads. MG was loads of fun but got a little annoying towards the end because of some weak acting (and a little plot silliness). YB was TONS of fun... until I just couldn't take Park Shin Hye's cute act anymore.
Lee Seung Ki is definitely a WIN. He's a bundle of sweetness and so promising as an actor. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed they get a good female lead!

I love Lee Seung-gi and he was great in Brilliant Legacy.
He has proven himself as an actor and as a singer and a multitude of others as proven on the TV program 2days/1 night.
I'm just hoping that they'll get a proper lead actress to work with him.
There was a "rumor" somewhere that Sandara Park was being considered. PLEASE NO! Not suitable and if this would be the case, there will definitely be an uproar.
Ms Park is also involved in a controversy at the moment and has reached other viewers already worldwide. Too bad that she has blamed the Philippine entertainment industry for her very compromising photos which has appeared in the Korean tabloids. I would have more respect for her if she owned up and accepted responsibility instead of blaming others. Ah well...that's showbiz for you.

I'm really looking forward to this too, and I was just thinking the other day that it would be awesome if they cast Moon Chae Won as the gumiho. She's drop dead gorgeous, has the acting chops, and it'd be a BL reunion between her and LSG. What more could they ask for? :P
But last I heard, Shin Se Kyung was rumored to be very close to accepting it. I can still hold out hope, right? :P

Mystery still surrounds female lead, but more Hong sister awesomeness is always welcome!

Hong sisters are great and all that but is there any news of Bad Guy? I'm becoming more and more disheartened with SBS.

Moon Chae-won is just about due for her big break in a leading role, but Shin Se-kyung is huge right now, thanks to High Kick, and I do think she'd be perfect. I can see either one being a good fit for the goddess-y feel that the character is supposed to have -- a little otherwordly, maybe a little snooty. I'd be happy with either -- they're both on the rise and not yet overexposed.

Jb who's your pick or picks....it has to be someone with guts--of course bitchy, gorgeous female lead, Yoon Eun Hye, Kim Tae Hee, Chae Rim.... Really someone who would be fun---opposite Lee Sung Gi. The Hong sisters always seem to make their stories worthwhile to watch....

@Mel, I think Moon and Shin are among the best picks. I love Park Bo-young and she might be able to pull it off. The Hongs tend to use people who aren't quite top names -- they don't use complete unknowns but their projects usually propel the leads the next step up. Yoon Eun-hye, Kim Tae-hee, Chae Rim -- I think they're too established and too old for this kind of thing. YEH may want to try a non-bitchy role after the failure of My Fair Lady, Kim Tae-hee is the "nice girl" more than the haughty one, and Chae Rim seems to have moved on to the plucky ajumma roles.

this is awesome but oh noooo - what happened to bad guy?! i thought it was going to premiere in august after i am legend!!
oh well - anyways, though shin se kyung is on the rise, i think i'd prefer moon cahe won. shin has already been a leading lady, and though these producers don't care about this: i think it'd be nice to see moon instead take the lead and steal the show for herself. her role in my fair lady was not enough...

Ooh, I would LOVE for either MCW or SSK to take the part! It would be nice to see Moon and Lee Seung Ki play a real couple, unlike in BL.

Any idea if this drama is gonna be a sageuk-fushion drama or a modern one (like the other 'Nine tailed fox' with Kim Tae Hee)?

how exciting! this year has been a fantastic year in terms of the kdramas being broadcasted and this one is no exception. The Hong sisters never fail to make me laugh and for that alone, i'll be watching. LSG sounds fine...he's likeable and i can totally see him in the role so i'm fine with him. i'm just really scared about the female lead...she'd better be good or else it'll just ruin the momentum for the show. i prefer MCW cause i think she'll be perfect and I like her acting a lot more than SSK, but either would be fine with me.
very excited...cause i wasn't a huge fan of You're Beautiful (it was, in my opinion, one of the weaker and less interesting of the Hong sister dramas except for the split) so i'm crossing my fingers for this one!

Hallelujah, fantastic news!! Bad Guy has an official airdate: Aug 2nd! (cue: happy dance x 1000)
They had better not mess with that date now. Hmph!
Shin Se-kyung is an absolute treasure, she'll be perfect in a Hong Sisters version of a Gumiho.

i dont want moon chae won (even though i love her) because we've already seen her as lee seung ki's second lead in brilliant legacy..im not familiar with shin se kyung..bt i guess i wouldnt mind her since she's been getting fair reviews...i love park bo young..bt i think she has more of a girl next door image than a goddess image..unless they gove her like the ultimate makeover or something (i dont want that..i think she's cute as it is)...i also dont want sandara park as i dont think she has that much acting experience....but the big deal here is HONG SISTERS...i love these two and everything they have come up with...cant wait!! :D

Moon Chae Won definitely needs to be a female lead one of these days (I feel that she's so wasted as a second female lead) and it would be awesome if she was with LSG in a Hong Sisters' drama, especially after seeing them together in SI, though their relationship in that didn't work out. Well, even if they don't choose MCW, I'm sure they'll choose an actress who can work well with LSG.
