46th Baeksang Arts Awards

The 46th Baeksang Arts Awards were held on March 26 in Seoul, which is one of the biggest awards ceremonies in the industry, in both television and film. Only, this year I’ve got to say my reaction at the winners was mostly: WTF, Baeksangs?

I understand some of the awards. Go Hyun-jung (above) winning Daesang (the Grand Prize) on the television side for Queen Seon-deok, yeah. It was either going to be her or Lee Byung-heon, in my opinion, so it was also understandable that they threw Best Drama to IRIS since it didn’t garner the Daesang — even if I think IRIS is totally not deserving from a purely artistic standpoint. (If you were expecting Chuno to sweep, I’m actually expecting to see it more next year, with Baeksangs being a little behind the current television landscape. Even though Chuno did win for scriptwriting. Now, if it misses next cycle I will be confused.)

I even understand how Jang Geun-seok won a popularity award in film (Itaewon Murder Case) even though you’d think his wildly popular television drama You’re Beautiful would have been a better fit — but the television popularity award went to Lee Seung-gi, understandably. But Yoon-ah for popularity for Cinderella Man? I know I know, that’s a netizen vote and Yoon-ah has her SNSD fanbase, and she led Yoon Eun-hye and Han Hyo-joo in the votes… but given the overall dreariness of Cinderella Man — and the fact that the same fanbase couldn’t buoy that drama’s low ratings — an award for that role just seems weird.

Then there’s Newcomer winner Kim Nam-gil, who had a breakthrough performance in Queen Seon-deok, but he is most certainly NOT a newcomer. Dude made his official industry debut in 2003! He had significant (if supporting) roles in at least five dramas and has at least seven film roles to his credit. Yes, this is a way to give him an award without challenging Lee Byung-heon for Top Excellence, but come now.

Awards are often heavily political, but I didn’t think Baeksangs would produce such puzzling results. I mean, Queen of Housewives for best DIRECTING?

Kim Ah-joong (Accidental Couple) and comedian Lee Hwi-jae were the MCs for the event. She looks pretty, if a little bridal.

Ha Ji-won (My Love By My Side) won for playing the wife of a dying man, though she also had another big film in the past year, Haeundae, which picked up awards in other categories. I love how she always looks sexy and chic on red carpets.

Ha Jung-woo (Take Off) has had a string of hits, and here he is with co-star Kim Ji-suk (who looks crisp in white) and film director Kim Yong-hwa. I’m surprised at how well Kim Ji-suk pulls off the white suit, actually, given that it could so easily look cheesy. I’m actually a fan of his hair, too.

Choi Kang-hee (Aeja) is either pouting or gaping in the majority of her photos, which makes it hard to find nice shots. The uniform beige color sort of washes her out, especially without strong makeup, but she will cut you with those fingernails.

Jang Geun-seok (Itaewon Murder Case) may be wearing what looks like a sparkly smoking jacket, but considering his red carpet history this is decidedly a win. So cute.

Jo Ahn (LIfting King Kong) picked up a newcomer award. Not so hot about the dress (it’s cute) but I love her makeup. Pretty and pink.

The hair, the hair! (The bowtie! The cuffs!) Okay we get it, you’re a rockstar and you don’t care that the noonas find you adorable, Lee Min-ki (Haeundae).

Kang Ye-won, Lee Min-ki’s Haeundae co-star, sparkles in her dress, but it reads kind of matronly to me.

Love this girl. Park Bo-young was last year’s newcomer winner for Speed Scandal and she’s adorable here in a sweet pink confection of a dress, although I swear I’ve seen this dress at another red carpet.

On the TV side, it’s no surprise that Go Hyun-jung was the big winner; this makes two Daesangs for her portrayal of ambitious villain Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok.

Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi) has this way of looking elegant with a hint of awkwardness, and I mean that as a compliment, since it gives her a fresh sort of appeal. I think it’s her slightly gangling limbs; in a few shots she looks like a startled deer. A polished, glam, startled deer. I do think the proportion is a little off in the dress, though.

Kim Nam-gil (Queen Seon-deok), you sexy bastard. Check out that look in his eye in Pic #1.

The kelly green is a pretty shade, but I was perplexed about the bright bubblegum-pink lips until I saw the full-body shot for Kim Nam-joo (Queen of Housewives). But matching or not, coordinating lips-to-shoes does not excuse the clash in my book. (I would’ve loved this look in a black, silver, or even gold shoe.)

Lee Byung-heon (IRIS) always looks sharp and confident. I sorta feel like they gave IRIS the win to make up for throwing the Daesang to Go Hyun-jung instead of Lee.

I suspect some will hate it, but I absolutely loved this tangerine/sherbet color on Sohn Ye-jin (Personal Taste). I love the color more than the shape, though.

Sohn’s latest co-star, Lee Min-ho (Personal Taste), is looking a lot more comfortable on the red carpet. Remember how Lee Min-ho was so awkward and stiff-looking last year in his plain suit and with the red-carpet fall? Much more put-together this time around! Our baby’s growing up.

Lee Min-jung (Smile) is so pretty. I’m not a fan of the dress, which I don’t think does much for her, but the overall look is nice.

Lee Seung-gi (Brilliant Legacy) looks okay if kind of plain. He did win a popularity award, so yay for him.

Here’s the thing about Moon Geun-young (Cinderella’s Sister). Sometimes “eat a sandwich” comments are snarky and bitchy and not made with a helpful spirit, but with Moon, I really really don’t like seeing her so thin because it looks scary and wrong. It’s particularly pronounced with her because, as the Nation’s Little Sister, we’ve all seen her growing up over the past decade and we know she wasn’t always so skeletal. This makes me sad.

Hwang Jung-eum (High Kick Through the Roof) has this tendency to make Scary Eyes. She’s one degree below its more-fearsome cousin, Crazy Eyes. Despite that, I like this look on her, even though I keep seeing it as a ’70s-inspired jumpsuit rather than an evening dress.

Seo Woo (Cinderella’s Sister) is going for pretty and sweet, and I’m not a fan of the dress — it looks sloppy with the asymmetry — but I can see that she’s going with the cute, innocent image of her upcoming Cinderella character. And what better place to promote the image than the Baeksangs a week before your premiere, right?

This has been a huge year for Shin Se-kyung (High Kick Through the Roof) and I think this gown is a fab choice for her. I would’ve made her the pic at the top, only she didn’t win anything, and you can’t argue with Daesang! She still seems shy on the red carpet, but I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future.

Uh, WTF So Ji-sub? This is like Gu Hye-sun coming to an award dressed in Jan-di gear. I get that he came in character for his Korean War drama Road No. 1, which he is currently filming — but for the Baeksangs, really? The drama doesn’t air for three more months, so promoting it here seems premature. Perchance he came directly from set and had no chance to change? (Wishful thinking?)

I love this simple, strong look on Sunwoo Sun (Will It Snow For Christmas). It really works with her height.

Yoon-ah (Cinderella Man) sort of reminds me of a Barbie Doll, especially in the last photo. Which I don’t mean as a bad thing.

There was a good amount of pink on the red carpet, and Hong Su-ah‘s (My Precious You) is one of my favorites.

Joo Jin-mo (Dream) is looking rather casual, isn’t he? It’s like he’s here for a business meeting, not an awards ceremony.

Uhh… I get what Lee Chae-young (Wife Returns) was going for, I really do. I just don’t like it. Maybe for a fashion show?

OWWW OWW OWW Jung Yong Hwa loooks great in that suit and not to mention his fab hairstyle, the same goes with Kim ji sook and Joo sang wook..

On the woman side, none of their dress look that nice to me, but Kim Nam joo, Jo Ahn, HHJ,HJW,Lee Min Jung, Son Ye Jin,Park Bo young were all still manage to make it look great..
As for Hwang jeung eum and Lee chae yong, LOL No comment.... Both look cheap to me.. bear my rudeness...

Like many of u said, Baeksang really has lose its credibility. Esp in the TV section... Its ALL ABOUT RATING AND POPULARITY NOW.. Yoo Na and Hwang Jeung eum were prove of that..

I'm not really satisfied with most of the result though. My Chuno should've been at least won 3 awards. But yeah 1 is enough I guess, I suppose that IRIS craze hasn't over yet in Korea huh? Ah well...

And here goes my favourite dress for male
1. KIM NAM GIL!! *drools*
2. Jung Yong Hwa --> YES, he's wearing his wedding WGM RING!
3. Daniel Choi.
4. Kim Ji Suk. --> I notice that he's quite hot when he's clean. :P

1. Ha Ji Won --> speechless. It's not fair, why on earth she always looks damn good no matter what she wears. Boo. Me jealous!!

about LBH...I would never argue his prize but I just can't fall for him..its just a matter of taste..I looked (hardly though) at IRIS -it has the right pace the right script until now(grrr I just can't finishh it) QSD doesn't have all the time the right script, doesn't have the pace...in some places is too slowwww and in others the things happens so fast that hardly you can underrstand what the hell are they doing(ok they tricked me I watch it a second time..or maybe 3rd)

I still think that KNG didn't changed that much... his look as Jae-Min still haunts me - thats perv I know Jae-min is gay, his taesanish fragile -strong bad guy almost get me a divorce , but Kim Nam Gil didn't get the media coverage until now...remember "QSD's secret weapon blablabla"....that was proper advertising
For KNG's fans until May you have The day before(Eve of storm) with the priemiere on April 1st)...there his angsty char is a Prison break AIDS madly inlove guy...(prison break theme is a winner for me)

QSD had the last 12 ep with the smallest ratings..but that ratings were still better than the first 16 episodes of IRIS...Congratulations for both dramas for 30+points

GHJ as MiShil...not even in American movies you could find such a character ...so rarely a support role stoles the show...and the trick is that's a villain role...but people fall in love with her
Love means...bereaving without reserve....and God GHJ took our love without reserves

I love her gown it flatters her silhouette she's not skinny so the black suits her.This in a ceremony and I like american actresses gowns...rarely you can she a short dress...ermm no matter how sexy...this is a ceremony not a disco club you can look sexy with a long dress see the HJW's dress considering she had the right length of the dress(I loved it just because of that...and if I look better the gown is HOT)....but I would buy GHJ dress because of my silhouette, otherwise I would go for"trashy" look...I'm mad about trashy-classy gowns

LOL SM artists always pretty much win every poll n vote-based awards,,i even heard somewhere that their fanbases (cassie,SONE,etc) have the capability of hacking into the system of the voting site so their idol would win~~scary,but (i guess) pretty explanatory~

@bee that means a huge fan base...there could be some hackers among them...really I don't care but often a boybander who hardly can act will have more fans than a good actor...and, I repeat myself, they have better media coverage- an actor/actress works for months to have his movie finished, but a singer will be daily on radio and TV with his 5 minutes song/MV...I don't tell that singers aren't hard working but in a shorter career they will have lots of fans

But I guess it just shows that Baeksang rewards for high tv ratings more than acting talent, not unlike the network award shows. When is Korea ever going to have a more unbiased award show? Sigh!

Rant: Dramas are already being awarded through ratings and netizen popularity, shouldn’t there be a source of comfort for those who strive for excellence but don’t accomplish the popularity vote? How does awarding dramas twice, in the ratings/popularity dept then in an Awards ceremony inspire artistic/innovative growth? Maybe I’m expecting too much. *sigh*

Poor skinny Moon Geun Young will end up to the stage of bony... She shouldn't have to choose that inappropriate dress... It makes her skinnier... But i love her anyway^^ Go Moon, GO!
At first I thought Jung Yong-Hwa was Kim Hyun Joong...hehe^^ He's cute!

So Ji Sub looked so handsome....in whatever he wears !

Very likely he came in between filming "Road No. 1". He left right after giving out
the awards. So what's the big deal what he chose to wear ? He wore jeans to
Baeksang in 2005 picking up his best actor award. Proper or not is in the eyes of
beholders.

JB, how come your beloved Kang Ji Hwan not there giving out awards with SJS?
Care to comment on his problem?

Oh my, oh my! JANG GEUN SEOK --- Oh yeaa!! Heh, Ooh, I hope that Moon Geun Young should have eat more to make regular weight as same as that past -- eekk, I don't like seeing her soo skinny, ouch. It's NO matter what I still looovvveee her!

I watched My Love By My Side on a recent long-haul flight, and it was heartbreakingly good. Ha Ji Won was just amazing. She was awesome in Haeundae as well, another movie which I like very much. Girl really deserves her win.

Jung Yong Hwa and Jang Geun Seok made my heart stop.

I'm little late for this, but I saw around 10 mins of Baeksang Award in my hotel room...it looked so quiet for an award show!

Btw, for the red carpet's pictures, my comment :
- Jang Geun Suk looks decent. Very good progress since last year's appearance.
- Lee Min Ki tries to take over JGS's spot. :P
- Lee Chae Young's dress is like female version of 2PM Heartbeat's costume! :P Anybody here noticed that? The color, the cut, the model. It's weird!
- I love the green dresses Kim Nam Joo and Shin Se Kyung wear.
- Jung Yong Hwa is looking very good!

When I read the list of the winners --- some of my predictions were true, Go Hyun Jung, Ha Ji Won, Kim Nam Gil, Lee Byung Hun and Kim Nam Joo won. And I was also going 'WTF?' when I read YoonA won. I don't hate her, but..well SNSD does have large fanbase, doesn't it?

There is politics in the result of awards. Just a mediocre!
Kim Nam Joo wears ugly dress and her actings is poor.
Queen of house wives sucks, I cannot swallow it.
Yoona gains popularity based on "Cinderella man"? it is the worst drama and her acting is terrible. If you say she is a good singer, I will have no idea because I did not hear she sings.
rocker-actor Jung Yong-hwa? oh my God!
Go Hyun-jung (Queen Seon-deok): she is set for the biggest award regardless of what she does.

i like so ji sub! It is fabulous! no matter he wears remember last year jang geun suk dressed like a clown? it is much more hundred percent good than this, so no matter I really liked it, anyway is not this year is 60th anniversary of war? So it is not that bad i think

I am surprised nobody mentioned the total injustice to Jang Hyuk not winning the best actor in a drama category. I know LBH is a big korean star and Iris is the most expensive drama KBS produced with good ratings, but how can they pass JH by when he managed to convey the full range of emotions required in Chuno while delivering his actions scenes?

I have no respect for this BS award!

Agree , JH is deserved to get award , his character is very hard to act in Chuno , and
OJH is also deserved to get support actor award too . Iris is good drama , but
LBH ' character is not required expressing his feeling as hard as JH . Iris is action drama as most of Hollywood movies . QSD is good drama too but i find Misil
character , as evil , is similar to many chinese historical movies , more soap like not realistic at all .
Chuno is totally different than other historical dramas , for me Chuno is combining
perfectly of acting , realistic storyline , directing and i 'm surprised that Chuno got only one
award , should we believe the fairness in those awards ?
How about SJS . he is a talented actor ,in Can and Abel his acting is amazing , realistic .my opinion .

This Belleza was very pleased that This Mishil won the Daesang.

Surprised that Iris won Best Drama. Chuno finished very closely behind Iris in terms of ratings (and Queen Seon Deok averaged higher ratings than iris), and the critical reception for Chuno was pretty strong. My guess Iris won because it had commercial preeminence as a Hallyu Drama, but Chuno is also a hot Hallyu product.

As for Yoona winning her award, well it's a Netizen award and SNSD just released a new single.

to those who say that yoona do not deserve the award,

lets me ask you,
why is it that Cinderalla Man wasnt a big hit and the fault has to be yoona?

sometimes (or rather, most of the times) the plot plays the biggest part.
and mind you, yoona is NOT the only actor in this show.
why must it be her fault?

not saying that yoona acting is great, i know she still have room for improvement.
but putting all the blame on yoona, isnt that over?

and what is it about SM buying polls or Sones hacking into system.
dun be jealous just because SM artists are popular.
and they worked hard for it mind you.

there is a saying that goes " grapes that you cant eat are sour" literall converted in english.
and know what does that mean?
when your fav actor/actress dun get the award,

Yes,it is not all yoona's fault that cinderella man wasn't succesful,but in some way if there was a better actress who colud react to Kwon sang woo's good acting,who knows it could have been better?ncuz the story and the directing of these drama wasn't bad at all...well idont hate yoona or snsd i am not anti or smthng,its just the personal opinion

Ha ji won is super super hot! As for those comments regarding Yoona's award., it is a popularity award. It is not I repeat not an acting award. Gosh. Take a chill pill. Yes, she is not the greatest actress but there are plenty of actresses who are in the same boat as she is. And most of them are really really popular! I will not name them but there are A LOT of them.

I love to see Moon Geun-Young and Kim Nam-Gil together in a series or a movie. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be great since they're both good actors. Unfortunately that won't be possible anytime soon because Kim Nam-Gil will have to comply with his mandatory military service next month. But I'm still keeping my fingers cross and hopefully will see them working together after his 2-year service.

Kim Ji-suk and Joo Sang-Wook were awesome.

Ha Ji-Won looked pretty amazing.
