The Legacy of Will it Snow for Christmas
by waterleaf
While the drama Will it Snow for Christmas has received mixed reviews, the true legacy of the drama has been the acting capability of its amazing actors. The drama itself garnered good, but not amazing ratings (it was also overshadowed throughout its run with bigger name dramas: Iris and Chuno), and received some complaints on its less than original plot. However, the acting, especially of 3 characters have received much glowing praise.
First is Kim Soo Hyun, who has been propelled into the spotlight due mainly to his role as Kang-jin during the first 2 episodes. Regardless of his relatively young age and inexperience, he was praised for his intense acting which portrayed the depth of his character. Thereafter he stared in a 2-episode New Year special Father’s House, which was re-run due to popularity. Kim Soo Hyun is certainly an actor whom we may hope to see more of.
Second, the lead Go Soo rose to much popularity due to this role (and his role in his movie: White Night), thrusting him into the spotlight, from which he had been absent for 4 long years. While some criticism has been remarked upon his character for being too perfect, the high quality of Go Soo’s acting has been positively noticed. Coming back to the small screen in 4 years, Go Soo has once again captivated living room hearts, gaining nicknames such as 고비드 “Gobidi” and 고수앓이 “GoSooahe”, referring to his sculpture like image and charisma. Go Soo showed his truly amazing acting ability in his portrayal of his character. (He even drew the charcoal image Kang-Jin drew for the company himself)
Finally, the actress who played Kang-jin’s mother Jo Min Soo drew much notice as she accurately portrayed her role’s many faceted character, from a woman who can not forget or let go her love, a mother with two full-grown sons (both of different parentage), and finally a mother who brings those two full-grown sons back with her to her hometown because of that love she can not forget. Her love story acts to some extent as a foil to the main love story and also as a major obstacle in their way. She has her own unique brand of motherhood, shown through her relationship with her sons. She oftentimes inhabits a child-like innocence, but also shows bursts of wisdom at strategic points throughout the drama. Jo was able to act all the numerous sides to her character with much talent and skill.
Thus, while the drama itself may not have made the tremendous success it may have hoped for (and it was in no means a failure), it truly made its mark through the talented acting of its actors.

Yeah I dropped out halfway and would still have much preferred a show with the teens but the 3 actors you mentioned REALLY stood out. A good script would have turned this into melo-gold, and not ridic-melo either. Kim Soo Hyun makes me drool, seriously, someone please snag him and Nam Ji Hyun again!

If only they left ended this drama at ep 10. It was a soild drama until then. I had a feeling the writers were trying to bring additional adversity to its characters just to compete with Iris, and when it didn't work out, they gave up. One thing that has always bother me was Han Joon Soo's death. Why was it never mention to the family, and why did they never bother to ask about him up even when Kang-jin’s mother returned. That was a bit strange.
Yes the acting was awesome but the writers did not delivered the goods.

The drama could have been amazing unfortunately the writing of the latter part of the drama really let it down. But it was directed really well, it made alot of the situations quite relatable not to mention some of the scene at the end were quite beautiful, especially when Go Soo carries his mother home.

I was amazed at Nam Ji Hyun who played the young Ji Wan; she was intense, mischievous, strong and truly enjoyable to watch.
The K-media often overlooks girls who aren't all fluff - she deserves as much notice as Kim Soo Hyun.
Hopefully Jo Min Soo will get a whole series where she is the lead actress. She was amazing!

I don't know... I started watching this Kdrama but I don't think I can ever finish it. It's too draggy, predictable, and to be honest, it was also boring and very dull.
Go Soo is good-looking though.

I agree that the actress who played KangJin's mother was amazing in her portrayal. Her acting was what saved this flimsily written drama. But speaking on the drama as a whole, I feel I wasted my time. Hopefully, the writers and director can learn from the criticisms and learn from what didn't obviously work.

I wasn't impressed with the story line of this drama. I felt the only episodes that kept me with it was the beginning with the younger actors. It was very depressing and seemed like all the characters needed psychological or emotional help at one time or another.
Sighhhhh....I think I'm getting tired of kissing scenes with tears at the same time.

If it wasn't for the actors, I would have dropped it. There some good episodes, but some episodes that were not that fun to watch. Especially towards the end... but since the series isn't that long, you just say to yourself "Only a few more episodes... hang in there..."
I honestly did not care about the parent's history. 20 years, they can't except reality and move on!? Some parts felt a bit laggy... but again, the acting was so good it lures you in to watch more.
It was also nice seeing Go Soo and Jo Min Soo together. Surprisingly as mother and son.... ahhh, makes me want to watch Piano again, heh.

The acting was phenomenal. The story frustrated me and I had mixed feelings, but the acting was glorious. I was pleasantly surprised.
I think the problem in the story, though, was that the drama was exhausting considering how the characters were in a small circle and crossed paths quite a bit and the reasoning for some storylines. I know it is a drama, but if it wasn't for the cast, I would have stopped watching a long time ago.
(Sorry this sounded repetitive, trying to multi-task right now.)
I honestly cannot wait for the next projects from the majority of the cast. I feel like I will be watching out for them for years.

I think that out of all the actors you mentioned, though I absolutely love Go Soo, I was most struck my Jo Min Soo's acting...her character played by another actress may have been someone I hated and might have made the drama unwatchable for me. But the way that JMS revealed her layers and the way her emotions were expressed really stuck with me. Though it's a shame that HYS's acting wasn't exactly up to par with the rest of them, it wasn't completely unbearable. Overall great acting =]
On a side note, Go Soo really drew that charcoal picture himself? I'm seriously impressed.

Thanks for the post! It's good to see another post about Will It Snow; I'm still suffering from withdrawal. I agree with your three actor reviews - they were just amazing and carried the drama. If only a few others were as good...but I won't go there. Overall, I loved it, got addicted, and got obsessed, so I can't complain.
Does anyone know what Go Soo's next project will be? Or better yet...any possible Go Soo sightings in June/July? I'll be going to Korea then, and keep having dreams/fantasies about seeing stars in the airport...then narrowly missing them, like that k-drama cliche. (But let's hope that doesn't happen!)

I was having another typical horrific day at the office but this news about Go Soo totally made my day!~
WOW!!!!
So one of the scenes that got repeated replays, when KJ did a rough sketch of Green City because someone from TJ's team had deleted his master plan in the computer, it was actually Go Soo doing the charcoal drawing? I’m very impressed (but honestly, doesn’t really take much to impress me these days when it comes to Go Soo…haha). The drawing was quite good so I just assumed that the production people got someone professional to do it.
gahhh Go Soo, you don't have to keep on being so awesome~
I'm already hopelessly and madly and completely in love with you :)
Kim Soo Hyun did a good job, but he looks younger than his age. I was surprised to learn his real age because I thought he was maybe 16 or 17.
And Jo Min Soo did a phenomenal job as KJ's mother. She brought a vulnerability to a selfish/childish character and made me sympathize with her rather than hate her. Also, her mother-son chemistry with Go Soo was truly beautiful and poignant, one of the most memorable ones I've seen.

This drama is a real classic for me, its scenes still haunt me.
Wonderful, wonderful drama, I loved its layered way of story-telling and the multi-faceted characters. The actors did a tremendous job in bringing the complex characters of this story to life.
Ditto with both Cha Kang-jins. Kim Soo Hyun and Go Soo... *wipes tear* what can I say... phenomenal.
Chun-hee's character was likable from the start, she had a Catherine Zeta Jones kind of old-school lilting quality about her and loved her throughout in episode 2. then I began to hate her around the mid-way mark, but fell back in love with her in the closing episodes. Basically, the actress Jo Min Soo did her job very well.
Han Ye-seul's version of Ji Wan, wasn't as awesome and engaging as Nam Ji Hyun's before her, but she grew on me, and I was totally rooting for her in the second half of the series. Hey, she managed to make me cry, notably in the last episode when she turns up drunk at Chun-hee's and her pain-filled line delivery was pretty damn effective when she asks Chun-hee ''then how will I live without him?''
I don't know... yes, she wasn't as spec-bloody-tacular as the rest of the cast but she was satisfactory.
I really miss this drama and recently when I had a couple of days off work, I kicked back and watched the entire show again, and even more closely this time.
(Yeah, episode 11 onwards was a little 'urgh!' and Young-sook wasn't my favest of characters but I still like the drama as a whole.)
Why am I not surprised at his charcoal drawing? It's amazing! As amazing as his acting, singing (I have 'Hongdo don't cry' on my ipod and I can't get enough of it!) and of course his devastatingly good looks!

I'll forever consider WISFC...a "classic", as far as K-melodramas are concerned!!! Many will surely not agree w/ me on this...but having watched my fair share of KDramas...only a handful has really made me tune in & wait patiently, week after week for its episodes!! Not to mention the tons of tears I've shed watching the story unfold!!!
Plus the fact that, I almost gave up on Gong Yoo(my first love!!!!MINE!!!)...for my Go Soo "infatuation!!! LOL!!!
I miss WISFC & Go Soo so much!!! have to rewatch ep.10 again!!!

i have a feeling that even if IRIS and CHUNO were not airing the same time as this drama, WISFC will still get the same ratings that it did.
it received low ratings because the story and the acting is not really that great. i can overlook the flaws in the story because there is no perfect story anyway.
but the acting is not really that great. it was just average to below average. go soo's scowling face really just depressed me that i stopped watching it. in the beginning, i called his acting "brooding" and i was fine with it. but after a few eps and he is still "brooding", his acting started to pall. it became tedious, in my mind his "brooding" became "scowling".

I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes.
However it was all down hill for me after this.
The drama appeared to be heading in a great direction and then when they switched to the older grown up characters, I just found the whole drama boring, repetitious and full of overused cliches, such as brain tumours, memory loss, love triangles.
Go Soo and Han Ye Seul's characters became dull and lifeless towards the end of the drama and everyone else just annoyed me.
I think the script is largely to blame for this.
