The cast of Dong Yi gets into character
by javabeans
Here’s our first look at the cast of MBC’s historical series Dong Yi dressed in costume. The drama features Ji Jin-hee as King Suk-jong and Han Hyo-joo as the water maid Dong-yi who turns concubine, then mother to a future king. Lee So-yeon follows her vengeful Angel’s Temptation role as Lady Jang, a higher-ranking concubine that’s described as a villain role. Bae Soo-bin is Dong-yi’s caring protector (O, will he never get the girl?).
Han Hyo-joo shared her feelings on donning the clothes for the first time: “Wearing the costume makes it feel real, as though the outline has been revealed. Even when I’d seen the synopsis and script, I didn’t picture things clearly, but after seeing how it looks I can imagine it better.” Because she takes the title role, Han will be bearing much of the burden of the drama; she said, “The director told me that he’d watched all of my projects, and deliberated about what would suit me best, from head to toe. I think we’ll be fine if I can do a good job.”
She also called the drama a “sageuk CSI,” since there are scenes that involve Dong-yi investigating matters. (This is a description I haven’t heard before, and one I didn’t expect of this drama. I presume there are court mysteries at hand.)
Lee So-yeon said, “I’m playing another villain, but I’ll show a Lady Jang that’s different from previous portrayals, one with my own appeal.”

Even though it's more accurate and whatnot, I agree that Han Hyo Joo shouldn't have been paired up with such an old guy because they'll probably be lacking chemistry.
I'm not so sure about this show... I'll probably just hire someone to compile all of Bae Soo Bin's scenes for me. That's all I really need. ; )

Did you know that Ji jin Lee and Lee So Yeon are married to each other. Can't forgive JJL for being so mean to Jo Hyu Jae in Love Letter and LSY character in Spring Waltz was also mean to Han Hyo Joo. Don't know if I can take both of them in the same drama, but I do respect their acting, Just love HHJ in Brilliant Legacy and Spring Waltz.

question, don't kings usually wear red? Why is JJH's character wearing blue? Or has my video card gone wonky? And like someone above mentioned, I thought women still wore wigs at this time too....

i love Han from iljimae and Brilliant legacy but still felt uncomfortable with this pair in Dong-Yi. Han looks so young in every matters but i can't think of her as QUEEN. Anyway, i'm happy she can join such a big project and can have major role in this drama. Her acting quite lacking in some scenes in iljimae bcoz it's saguek and she can't speak naturally. I hope she can improve her acting skill here. ^ ^

@32 Jo - "Did you know that Ji Jin Hee and Lee So Yeon are married to each other?"
They are married in real life? Wow, what a strange twist of fate then because Lee So Yeon was rumored to have been Jo Hyun Jae's gf during their "Untold Scandal" and "Joy of Love/Pleasure of Love" days. And of course, Ji Jin Hee made Jo Hyun Jae's life so miserable in Love Letter. Can't forgive Ji Jin Hee either for making my Prince Charming Jo Hyun Jae miserable in Love Letter, kkkk.
Anyway, for LSY fans who haven't seen her in the gem of a short internet film "Joy of Love/Pleasure of Love" here's a link where you can watch it. It is really a joy to watch.

I enjoyed Han Hyo Joo's performance in Shining Inheritance but looking at these pictures reminds me of Spring Waltz in that she seems too young for this more mature role... but I suppose I should wait for the drama to see if she can change my mind about it.

@ 32, 38 - No.. JJH and LSY aren't married in real life, in fact LSY isn't even married at all! (It's true that the name of JJH's wife (who is not an actress) is quite similar to LSY though lol)
I'm really looking forward to Dong Yi, and I'm not that worried about the chemistry between the two leads.. I think they look better than I first thought, and I think JJH will support her well.

@1 Carmie: "He won’t get the girl. He’ll be the Korean James Marsden where he’ll do one random drama where he does get the girl."
Hilarious! Or he may get the girl then she'll end up killing him. Poor BSB, I'd love to see him end up happy sometime, even in a random drama where he finally gets some nut-job.

I doubt I'll be watching Dong Yi.
The premise and characters are seemingly identical to Yi San, and the writer and director are the same as well. I liked Yi San enough to watch it all the way to the end (even though it started to seriously run out of steam after 50 episodes or so), but I don't want to see a remake. First of all, I found the political maneuvering in Yi San to be frequently boring, and I expect there to be more of the same in Dong Yi since it concerns the life of a king. Watching people scheme and plot in identical rooms for 77 episodes gets a little old. Second, the love story was very lackluster because of the amount of formality between the main characters, and it wasn't very compelling in general. I expect this to be an issue in Dong Yi as well. Third, I doubt Dong Yi will do anything new in terms of cinematography and overall style, so if you disregard the plot and characters you won't be able to tell it apart from Dae Jang Geum and Yi San. Some features really need to go, like improbably well-lit indoor scenes, repetitive camera angles and constant flashbacks to conversations that occured seconds earlier.
But what will ultimately determine whether I'll watch this is Lee Ip-sae, who played Young-roh in DJG and Cho-bi in Yi San (also appeared in Byung-hoon's 1999 drama Huh Joon, which I have not seen). I only started watching Yi San because I liked her so much in DJG. But will she be in Dong Yi? She has worked with Byung-hoon three times before, so it's possible. Man, if she's in the cast I'll watch it even if it's otherwise completely boring.
