@ Samsooki - coolio! xD
It's my first time on an open thread so was just curious is all...
I have a TRIVIA QUESTION too... this is for veteran drama lovers... I'm continuing with the gift theme....
In the drama ATTIC CAT with Kim Rae Won (K! R! W!) and Jeung Da Bin, what embarrassing gift does he give JDB, which she (secretly) goes on to treasure and keep in her bedside drawer in a little gift box?
samsooki, I just now had to go back and get information on the characters of Coffee Prince and realized my mistake. The only thing I could remember was a pair of shoes that were purchased.
I don't remember anything about makeup at all. Ugh. The memory is a terrible thing to lose.
Samsooki, thanks!
Waaah... You've never watched attic cat? It's another MLP and from the same era! AND it stars the K! R! W!* Consider this a recommendation.
You must watch Attic Cat!! otherwise how can you understand why we adore K!R!W! despite his character actually being a total cad through much of this show?
You got my brain in trivia mode and I'm stuck here trying to remember the 10 things Kim Sam Soon wanted to do with her ideal boyfriend. I've got 5 of them....
Do you guys have any qualms or reservations about watching Attic Cat or Last Scandal today, knowing what happened? Or perhaps Lobbyist?
I find myself really reluctant to watch, I'll read and enjoy JB's Last Scandal recaps, but on a visceral level, it pains me to watch JDB or CJS alive. I suppose I have double standards, as I can re-watch LoCH 1982 knowing Barbara also killed herself shortly thereafter, but I guess it's because I watched it first before the tragedy.
Sigh, missing out on more KRW patented awesomeness, but then I still have Gourmet sitting on my shelf I need to touch. Oh, and samsooki, I think Nam Sang-mi has in fact been given a big-budget drama before, Time Between Dog and Wolf with Junki. It may not have broken IRIS level ratings, but I recollect it was a major release back then, and I love it a lot, so NSM's agent probably did take off all his clothes and parked in MBC's lot until she got the gig, and it was worth it. NSM was Junki's best leading lady, hands down.
And lastly - CAPRICA! Tonight! Be there or be square. Can't wait to hear my unni spazzing afterwards, and hjkomo. Will Eric Stoltz bring it? We shall have to wait and see.
Last night my husband and I stayed up until 2am to finish MNIKSS (his first time watching, my third). He said he really liked it a lot except for the secondary couple, Hee-jin and Henry, and he espcially didn't care for Henry (Daniel Henney).
When I told him that some people felt DH had the acting ability of an elegant block of wood he started calling the Daniel Henney-Jung Ryu Won couple "the Crossbeams" and re-writing all of their dialogue accordingly. I know this may be heresy for some MNIKSS fans but it was really hilarious. Honestly, every time I watch MNIKSS I find them more annoying. But I'll watch anything to get me some KSA.
Edited to add: ockoala, it does affect me. I have not been able to watch either Attic Cat or Last Scandal of My Life, I just can't watch those actresses, knowing what they were driven to do... nothing that is supposed to be funny is funny, that which is meant to be charming just leaves me melancholy. I just can't separate the reality.
I've just been laughing my head off at the K! R! W! Every single time it appears I get the giggles. I wish I could mention a really obscure Korean drama that I liked but unfortunately I can only recall Japanese dramas. Does anyone know of a blog like this for japanese dramas?
wow, first time i've gone into open thread! love it! right now watching smile, you and thinking about which of the new ones (pasta, chuno, god of study?) to start. my 13 yr old daughter and i have some korean culture questions to ask and i'm wondering if some of the OT'ers would know the answers:
why eat tofu when you're sprung from jail?
why are there so many nosebleeds? i can understand they may start from exhaustion or fighting but from sex? (my name is kim sam soon).
those are the only ones i can think of now and i've spent a lot of time in my head trying to figure the answers out. TIA
re: watching Last Scandal post-CJS's passing. I was in the middle of watching it when she passed away and have yet to finish. i can't make myself watch the last 2-3 eps because of it... it's just hard to see her alive.
You know, when I watched Attic Cat I had no idea that the lead actress committed suicide and wondered later if I had known, would I have watched it anyway? I really enjoyed it tremendously and I've rewatched several scenes since, so I think my answer would be yes, I would watch it anyway.
But on the other hand, I DID know that the lead actress in Last Scandal also committed suicide, but decided to check it out because of Jung Joon-ho (so hot, which isn't even relevant to this conversation, but...shallow). I watched the first episode, thought it was great...and never watched another minute.
All that to say...I have no idea. I like to think I'll go back to Last Scandal one day because JB recommended it, but I don't know if I will.
But I absolutely do have a hard and fast K! R! W! rule; if he's in it, then I watch it. Period. I haven't seen them all yet but I will!
@111 moana -
About the tofu...I believe the theory is that it symbolizes a white and pure start.
@110 fionnula -
It was samsooki that started with the K!R!W! - it does seem to be samsooki who starts something around here eh?
::looks around suspiciously::
But yep, he takes the blame/credit for that one. I'm just trying to steal K!R!W! from jb's clutches.
@ockoala -
I watched Attic Cat before she died, so while I watch it with a little sadness, I still enjoy it with the spirit that it intended. Last Scandal I find harder to watch, since the story has a faint echo of what partly drove her depression.
Personally I want to know what happened to last year's big threat to investigate all the "trainees" and nonsense when the girl from BOF killed herself.
Hey guys! So this is the year I go to Korea!!! Yay! Have been planning this visit for over 3 years! I will be there for 1 month and plan to check out some of the sites from 1n2d and a few friends. My only little hiccup is trying to find the right airfare - aka, cheaper than $1300(from O'Hare). Anyone got suggestions and/or recommendations? Any wholesale sites that you recommend or know of? Any warnings?
Ok, here's my contribution to the quiz. In 'My Girl' when LDH falls in the bathroom and LDW is at the door, ready to rescue her. Does he have his eyes open or closed when he opens the door???
108 ockoala -
Whew! Tough question really, haven't watched Last scandal, but like momosan I first watched the drama Attic Cat before her sad demise.
I have re-watched the drama since and seen her film opposite SSH 'He was cool' for the squillionth time, my friends refuse to watch anything she made for those reasons but I don't know.. yes it saddens me that she's no longer around and no, I'm not desensitised but I kind of get too wrapped in the story and can still enjoy it oblivious to the actors/actresses real lives. Call me weird or whatever but I'm afraid where JDB is concerned I can still watch her films/dramas, plus to be honest, I would rather remember her for the sweet, endearing characters she played.
"I watched Attic Cat before she died, so while I watch it with a little sadness, I still enjoy it with the spirit that it intended"
Yeah, I think that's exactly the line I find myself unconsciously drawing - like I said, I rewatch LoCH 1982 pretty often, and am totally okay with it and miss Barbara Yung madly, but its only because I saw it the first time before she died, so the joie de vivre in which she portrayed the heroine feels like its appreciating her mark on the acting world.
There is no right choice, of course, I was just curious whether we elect to watch/avoid certain dramas, in part due to the real life situation of a lead. Sounds like it does affect all of us, in varying degrees.
don't blame ME! javabeans is the instigator of the meme known as Kim! Rae! Won! I can't find the first instance of it, but I am almost positive it came from javabeans.
But I do note that belleza is quite right - quite a lot of k-drama memes seem to originate from dramabeans and its denizens...
Has anyone seen the pilot yet? I haven't. I'm still in BSG mourning so I'm quite looking forward to it, but wondering if it will have enough space porn to make me truly happy? We'll see.
nosebleeds.. and humidifiers are symbols that you are really REALLY sick. heehee.. idk if they actually mean anything other than that..
K!R!W! is Kim Rae Won. my 2nd biggest Korean actor obsession. and apparently, i'm in good company w/ the others that are obsessed over him as well. hence the MINE! claims. lol
Sorry -- KRW =
Kim Rae Won - he of Attic Cat; Gourmet, My Little Bride, and My Love Patzzi among others. My Love Patzzi was the topic of a recent multipost throw down among the commenters, and K!R!W! was much discussed.
We tend to abbreviate lots of stuff around here - it's like talking in morse code sometimes. But we're friendly....mostly. 8-)
They're not usually evil, and as people they're pretty nice.. I'm only friends with one of them, but the other girl is her best friend, so.. Whatever. We just have completely incompatible living habits. (Also, the other girl's boyfriend is here EVERY WEEKEND without fail, which no one mentioned would happen when we were talking about living together. She even tried to get me to agree to let his son stay here for the weekend, but I had to put my foot down there.)

@111 moana
"why eat tofu when you’re sprung from jail?"
LOL! I actually had a friend of mine ask her professor (a math professor, but he was Korean) that question.. He said that the whiteness symbolizes purity, and is supposed to help keep the jailbird from slipping back into bad habits. Now it's more of a tradition than anything, which would explain why gangsters in dramas accept the tofu without any qualms. XD
As for the nosebleeds.. Physical exertion? :P I know Japanese manga tend to have characters get nosebleeds when they're turned on, so maybe it's a carryover?
--
On the subject of deceased actresses, I don't really have a problem with watching their dramas. For JDB and CJS, this is partially because (a) I don't particularly like JDB (she has a perpetual pout, and her almost-lisp drives me insane), and (b) I wasn't emotionally attached to CJS before she died. I saw Last Scandal and loved it, then found out months later that she had died, but it hasn't stopped me from going back and rewatching some bits. Maybe I'm just better than most at separating the real people from their fictional counterparts, but I've yet to find watching anything painful due to the sudden death of an actor/actress, regardless of when they died and whether or not I've seen them in anything. Even with Heath Ledger, whom I adored with the fire of a thousand suns, I still could watch 10 Things I Hate About You and Dark Knight and Knight's Tale without feeling uncomfortable.
My late cousin Jimmy - the last of the pro chefs in the clan - was a master of cooking snake. A little weird, and he never persuaded me to partake, but the rest of the bunch always looked forward to him cooking one up. He kept saying "eh, no weirder than calamari." And he had a point.
@26 yenchan. Thank you for the hug! Even though it was virtual, it did make me feel better.
@35 Kobe. Yeah it was Sammi Cheng's habit and then Andy Lau's character started cleaning too because she had started seeing a guy and he was sad! I guess there wasn't a toothbrush in that one. Now I'm really curious to find out which korean drama or movie had a guy cleaning the bathroom or kitchen with a mere toothbrush. That takes skills!
@ Kender. I'm sorry that you have such horrible roommates. I've heard tons of bad roommate stories from friends and I'm always shocked that there are people so inconsiderate out there. At first they look friendly and normal and then a week later, they've decided you're a free petsitter and they're leaving dirty dishes in the sink for weeks on end. And if you've made an arrangement, then they should stick with it. And wouldn't unplugging everything every single time anyone walks out of the room mess up the equipment? What a crazy roommate!
Well, it was over the course of a day, followed by all through the night until finished. I did that for a number of dramas, including Snow Queen (almost did it in one night), and a few other dramas I had to finish.
@123 samsooki and @126 momosan thx for the K!R!W! also thx to @125 lb_tmi as well esp for the nosebleed/humidifier info. you guys are making me feel welcome.
as for K!R!W!, i can tell i have some research to do though can he really compete with lee dong wook (sadly serving his country right now) or gong yu?
i watched last scandal just recently having known about CJS's suicide and i was fascinated (also sad--she's lovely to watch). i kept googling her and her life info. but i'm morbid that way. haven't wanted to watch attic cat because of her suicide. her story to me is deeply sad with the plastic surgery, apparent need for acceptance, etc.
Trivia Question 10 He gave her sunglasses... twice cuz she broke the first pair.
And I am devastated by the news of CN Blue! I love those kids! But that song sounds not just similar but ridiculously close!! I just can't listen to it the same but they have other good songs. I am excited about them because they are not auto- tuned! But if they copying and stuph I just can't support. And they cute.... all but one, but 3 out of ain't bad.
Nosebleeds reminds me of Yamato Nadeshiko the manga version - had to be the worst nosebleeds ever happened in the history of manga that I read LOL.
I was curious once too, so I checked it out, and i think nosebleed happened when a character sees/ thinks something perverted/hot.. it's been used widely in manga (and jdorama). Eg. Nakatsu in Hana Kimi bleeds a lot whenever he thinks of Ashiya.
not sure bout the scientific reasoning to this. perhaps someone else could explain better. :P
LOL at the toilet seat. BTDT.
But nothing corrects the problem faster than your screams waking up your hubby in the middle of the night because you got up to pee (and who bothers to turn on the light?) and nearly fell in the toilet... ;)
No, I, too have not yet watched Caprica, even though the pilot came out on DVD like eons ago. This might be contradictory to my earlier excitement about Caprica tonight, but after BSG ended, I felt satisfied and actually would have been fine letting it all go. Like making a paper boat and then letting it sail down that stream to where its supposed to go.
The entire 4 seasons of BSG provided for me the catharsis and closure I don't usually get with my fave dramas. Buffy limped out because the story wasn't really done, but UPN/WB/CW/the money man was done with it, so Joss butt-slapped an ending and called it a day. Firefly - it's still traumatic to talk about. VM - similarly traumatic, but less like someone wailed me with a hammer, and more like I was bitch-slapped for 5 minutes straight. Lost - I'm ready for the big ending season, just ready, and then done with it.
So, when BSG ended, I felt completed, and didn't really need more story with Caprica, not that I would have minded more, just that I didn't need it. Do I need a Ripper spinoff from Buffy, no. Can you make a VM movie, yes, but what good would it do, VM was small-screen noir and less L.A. Confidential.
Guess what it all boils down to, the story of BSG ended, and until Caprica starts, I'm in a happy content state where I don't feel this ache gnawing at my insides waiting for the big poo-poo to drop on the rag-tag crew of the Galactica. Oh, and Caprica is more civilization at the peak of its self-aggrandizement and less salvage our humanity in space saga, so mostly/all scenes from a 1950s-ish decorated set of Caprica on Earth and not much space shoot em' up. Supposedly to draw in more female viewers, and I think "what kind of female viewers, the Lifetime or Oxygen crowd?, cuz aint nothing bringing them over to a station called SyFy."
lol, you can always tell if a person watches more kdramas or jdramas/manga because of their interpretation on nosebleeds! In Korean dramas, nosebleeds means you're overworking. I understand that in Japanese dramas/anime, they indicate perverted thinking, but that interpretation definitely does NOT carry over into Korean dramas!
"your screams waking up your hubby in the middle of the night "
If a screaming baby 2 feet from him does NOT wake him up, and only a roundhouse kick from me jolts him awake so that he will go comfort said wailing baby, then no, my screams of having fallen into the toilet in the middle of the night falls on similarly deaf ears. Only my behind suffers, and my dignity long ago flushed down the toilet. Even our son! who is 4, puts down the toilet after he pees! How hard is that?
1. I believe the tofu eating stems from the fact that if you are in prison, you are generally very poorly fed over your course of imprisonment - very little meat, mostly vegetables and rice. The block of tofu (good source of protein, calcium, and B vitamins) is basically saying, "this is the first that you need - you need to eat." And with that tradition, now it is more symbolic. You bring the tofu even if the person spends a day in jail.
2. Nosebleeds are symbolic of a few things. The places where I've seen it, it is generally associated with extremely rigorous studying habits that make for very little sleep. For example, at the end of Bad Family, Kim Myung Min's gangster character is reformed and is trying to go back to school and get his grade school degree. So, he's taking a quiz, and he drips blood onto the paper, showing how hard he is working to learn how to read or how to do simple math.
In My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, that was because they had extremely energetic sex. LOL. It's supposed to be funny. See, in most dramas, the female character is generally very prim and proper and very passive. Sam Soon is ANYTHING but passive, and more likely than not, they wrestled as they had sex to see who would get to be on top.... hence the nosebleeds.
I would just like to say thank you for helping add another member to my ever growing list of totally inappropriate crushes on younger men. And this one even wears a big fur hat! :) That girl chose poorly!
I'm currently at burj al arab. Just ate dinner and in a bit going to go to the underwater restaurant to check out the sharkies
I've been living in dubai for 10 years and I finally go to it, damn everything is coated with gold, including the dustbins!
Its super expensive to get here and to tell u the truth its not worth it, the asian restaurant was awesome but it cost around a thousand dollars for us 7 people
I hope my mind changes after going to the underwater restaurant.
And I have to say this, I'm listening nonstop to 2AM's new mini album!!!!! I'm so buying it!
Ahh jokwon love
And I need to see will it snow for xmas 14!!
Since u mentioned it, only now I remember Jandi in BOF, she had an awfulsome of nosebleeds as well - from overworking that is, and not from looking at GJP LOL!
I could not agree more; BSG was perfection from beginning to end (minor quibbles here and there, but nothing major). I couldn't ask for more; the creators went above and beyond to give the fans what they wanted and deserved, which was wonderful. To love a show that is completely supported by its network is such a rare thing these days. So I'm in mourning simply because I miss it, not because I long for completion (Firefly, I'm looking at you. But thanks for the movie, Joss).
But a huge part of the whole BSG experience for me was the space porn, I can't lie. Who can forget Galactica FREAKING FALLING FROM THE SKY? 8)
lol, i'm loving the nosebleed interpretations. i thought i had figured out what they meant until i saw the kim sam soon post-coital nosebleed. now i love that drama even more.
here is a gift: i'm listening to this song on youtube. LOVE IT!
If you pee standing up, then there will be spatter. Even if you are EXTREMELY careful and you try your VERY BEST to be as perfectly aimed as possible, there will be spatter.
The reason is because if you take a stream of water (or whatever) and you see it slowed down by a high speed camera, you will notice that water hitting any surface will cause tiny droplets to fly in every direction. It is unavoidable. Then basically, this means you are basically walking barefoot in a... not so clean surface. Will you then enter your own bed with those bare feet???
Unless you live next to a cliff, and you are peeing over a cliff, and therefore don't care about spatter, then peeing standing up is a little bit... unclean.
"helping add another member to my ever growing list of totally inappropriate crushes on younger men'
Ahhhhhh, [*whispers feverishly to mookie* twin, twin, what do we do, someone else has also discovered our diamond in the rough *mookie whispers back* it's okay, twin, we called "MINE" already, so everyone else better get in line behind us).
Teasing, teasing, of course! Welcome to loverboy fandom, trixicopper. He's the *sole* reason I am even venturing into the world of mainland Chinese dramas.
Did you read what I wrote about the *choice* back a few OTs ago - something along the times of "girl picked a wet toe-rag over the hottest, coolest, so romantic in a manly way General in all of period drama-dom, so when said wet toe-rag couldn't handle all those deaths [hey toe-rag, go check in with your younger 6th bro, who seems to have the right outlook on handling multiple deaths in the family] and becomes a monk, all I could think was - serves that girl right for making the dumbest choice since the history of the love triangle was invented."
Watch out, but loverboy plays another general soon, this time on the side of the Song Dynasty, and, as it should be, he's the one guy between two girls. Reowr.
I am yet again awaiting for the second episode of Yamato Nadeshiko to come out today... Probably won't come out with subtitles until tomorrow, but this waiting is good - keeps me on the edge of things, you know?
Thank goodness it's Friday! I started watching "Woman Who Still Wants To Marry" and I really like it - the tone of things, the dialogue... I just really like it. I figured out that I have a soft spot for older woman-younger guy relationships. I'm not sure why, but I like them, for some reason. Haha. But I would recommend watching "Woman Who Still Wants To Marry." It's a breather compared to the more serious/dramatic Chuno and the melodrama of WISFC - which, by the way, I need to catch up on.
I think Lee Hyunjin is quickly becoming an obsession of mine... Why is he so damn cute?!

What a crazy roommate!

i watched last scandal just recently having known about CJS's suicide and i was fascinated (also sad--she's lovely to watch). i kept googling her and her life info. but i'm morbid that way. haven't wanted to watch attic cat because of her suicide. her story to me is deeply sad with the plastic surgery, apparent need for acceptance, etc.

How hard is that?

moana -
lemme see if I can't help out.

I'm kind of a neat freak about bathrooms.
Unless you live next to a cliff, and you are peeing over a cliff, and therefore don't care about spatter, then peeing standing up is a little bit... unclean.
