thank you! grazie, kamsahamnida ^^ brilliantly summarized. there's a reason they say, "if you can't stand the heat..." hierarchy, noise, heat, sweat (ideally not IN the food). It sounds like hell, unless you really love food (or need to make a living). i think the only one that Pasta can get away with is the larger than normal space b/c of it being a "stage" kitchen. I wonder if korean restaurant kitchens are any less chaotic than in US but... i doubt it keke. certainly not less yelling.
and sheesh, you'd think someone would be making freaking pasta. that's inexcusable. i'm not watching the show (yet) but i love dramas about food/cooking. Most people here don't watch long-running dramas but several of them have featured families who own restaurants, so they have been enjoyable to watch from that POV. I'm thinking of daily drama 돌아온 뚝배기 (english title: Cooking Up Romance) featuring a family that runs a sullung tang jip (beef bones soup house) and 며느리 전성시대 / Golden Era of Daughters in Law in which the family own a jip in pigs-feet alley. needless to say, very down to earth!
we stand by for more Tales from Momosan. bon appetit!

soompi - your overload of drama information... hehe
Huh. Watching some Lee Seung Ki videos, and saw this one he did with Nam Sang Mi, who plays a Bad Girl. Dang, where was this chutzpah when it was needed in Time of Dog and Wolf?
So last night my husband has expressed interest in watching Chuno because it has action, its a Seaguk, and he thinks LDH is cute . I guess this is all he needs for kdrama watching. I think I can count on one hand the number of kdramas he has watched with me. So I guess I'll be joining the Chuno bandwagon in a few weeks. I like to marathon through with subs.
@hpn88
"So I noticed that Dramafever added SANDGLASS.
I’ve heard it’s good, but has anyone here seen it and like it enough to recommend?"
I recommend it! The story and acting is really good in itself but the additional historical and political backdrop makes it even more compelling.
Forgot to ask - how did RoCH 2006 treat my sweet baby Guo Hsiang? You know even loverboy admitted he *felt something special* for her, why oh why couldn't LC challenge another convention and have a may-december romance right there. And maybe throw something out that didn't work, since GH was YG's soulmate if ever there was a woman out there like that. And it would have finally united the Guo and Yang families in marriage as those two doody dad's wanted so very long ago.
Sigh, no one has really portrayed a good Guo Hsiang in any adaptation I've seen. Just curious about GH's character in RoCH 2006 since I quit early, and wondering whether I should skip 16 years and finish it.
Yo! I'm just back from China, where my usual lurking places (facebook, twitter, youtube) are blocked. So lurked on OT all week whenever I needed a break. Love all the discussions! The Louis Cha discussion has really moved up several levels since my pathetic "Young Andy Lau! Phwaor!" contribution!
One early day off, a couple of folks wanted to go visit the Zhuge Liang memorial. For a split second, the fangirl in me squealed "oh, you mean pay homage to Takeshi Kaneshiro? Show me the way!" Hee hee. Then I came to my senses. And went instead to Starbucks to have a mocha and a chocolate truffle cake. Slurp, yum.
A week at home catching up on drama watching, and then -- Manila!
Aha, it's okay - I remembered watching the Louis Koo version of RoCH as a kid and I fell in love with him. ROFL. That just ruined every single RoCH version I've seen since then. And speaking of Guo Xiang, in the RoCH 2006 version with Huang Xiaoming (my goodness, did not do a good enough portrayal of one of my FAVORITE Jin Yong novel characters - I think Duan Yu is like my epitome favorite Jin Yong character he is just so cute!), I believe the new actress Yang Mi played Guo Xiang. She's cute - the actress that is - and Guo Xiang is cute, but I didn't think there was much going on anyway. At least it wasn't very memorable. But then again, the 2006 RoCH didn't put much of her character in there anyway... Yang Mi is a really good actress though, that aside.
Completely random, but I was wondering what your favorite Jin Yong (Louis Cha) novel is? My favorite I think has to be Tian Long Ba Bu. All-time favorite right there. With one of my favorite characters too, ahahaha.
@Lumi
LOL, I know! I have obsessed so much over Shinee that I decided I would learn their dance. My favorite part is seriously the hip roll. It is just... fun to do. But it really works the thighs. LOL. And thank you so much for the news on Tamra the Island 21 episode announcement whatever - too excited to type coherently. I am so unbelievably obsessed about that it is ridiculous.
I don't want to ignore your question, but I hate seeming like a broken record from last OT - oh what the heck, this is OT, I can say it again to a new friend!
myself, mookie, and epyc all have the same fave Louis Cha novel and fave LC hero - quote from last OT:
"now we have THREE unanimous votes for fave LC novel (Smiling Proud Wanderer) AND fave LC hero – the too cool for his times Linghu Chong. "
I think we three are harkening back to the Chow Yun-fat 1985 version as the iconic portrayal, but for me, it really is my fave novel. It's one of LC's later works, his writing technique is considerably more refined, and it lacks The Condor Trilogy's dogmatic adherence to political black and whites. Wanderer is a rebuke of politics but refrains from telling the reader how to feel and what to think.
And @ epyc said it best in why she loves Linghu Chong - he's a non-hero (I say iconoclast) who is a true romantic (and I think way more romantic than Yang Guo because LHC understood when to love and when to let go).
I believe one of mookie's fave novels is Tian Long Ba Bu or Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. I have a really hard time watching it - because of the life trajectory that is Qiao Fung/Hsiao Fung. To me, Yang Kang had two paths to go down in LoCH - the path he took, or the path Hsiao Fung took in Demi-Gods - and both lead only to one place, so inherently, YK is a tragic anti-hero, except YK was not afforded the dignity and slavish adoration HF was given.
As for Duan Yu - yipes, yeah, he's cute, he's a prince, he's kinda an accidental player (runs in his blood), but to me, he's a very very superficially written character and so I don't have much feeling towards him one way or another. Esp. since he loves Wang Yu-yan, that pretty much drops him 100 points in my esteem scale.
@ hjkomo
Just writing what I felt, CitC is unparallel, too bad I'm too much of a muffinhead to really get all the intricacies, like the dead man's bow samsooki pointed out (OMG that scene is a billion times more meaningful when I understood the significance). Anyways, care to lead a seminar on CitC? Maybe after we're done with Chuno.
As for now, my fave Chuno character is Tae-ha, OJH is conveyed much with very little. I can't wait to see the chemistry btw OJH and LDH. If its as good as the stills show, then we're in for a Damo-esque ride.
the only thing I took fr RoCH06 was a true to character GuoXiang by Yang Mi. I'm seconding A. (btw my fav LC novels: 1. ProudSmilingWarrior (it has a simplicity in structure yet poignant wuxia goodness that a 12 yo me fell in instant love with, and decades later... still respectfully adore) 2. DeerCauldron (pure joy as a reader, just the most mature work, this is me fangirling over Mr.LC) 3. DemiGods and SemiEvils (it's a balanced work, I love LC when he's attempting the unthinkable in writing successful complex epic, and it has my fav melodramatic wuxia hero: Qiao Feng/Xiao Feng) I agree Yang Mi as GX was not like OMGamazing (nth in RoCH06 was...argh) but at least she's cute and pretty...and did not OVERACT. seriously u and I r partners in crime, so breaking all shipping canons... my love for YG and GX fr the book (these 2 were my life support reading THAT bk) I want them to make pretty babies!!! and YG has enough daddy in him to just heck them all and screws HR and be her baby's robber... but I cant imagine that with the HXM's YG (but again a YuanHong YG.. shippityshipship!).. dun get me wrong, I really think he's one of the most dashing, gorgeous actor/model in all Chinese world, and he's more than serviceable in many of his works, but as a LC hero, he can't differentiate sleaze fr MichaelMiu's brand of sex appeal.
@ockoala, actually I want to sound off my love for GuoJing and XiaoFung as characters...but I'm yapping too much as is...lol
I dunno what rock I'm under but I've just heard of the Water Margin remake fr you guys and ... dang(I did check out Yan Kuan http://ent.people.com.cn/GB/42074/10596906.html.... )...those 108 rascals/heros with rags as garments and tats scream MANREM...but since they r going the ambiguous serious/wuxia route...ie I bet 100 of those 108 will be 'true to character' zero sex appeal ahjusshis ...and mixed with too few babyhunks...I'm kinda interested, but my dream version is a rotten idoldrama one with 108 prettyboys.
I'm still rooting for the 3 kingdom, I think they have the right crew and staff working on it out of all these.. and my interest in Red Chamber remake will solely be on par of flipping thro a Chinese InStyle circa 1750?! Journey to the West maybe the wild horse since I really dunno what to expect.
Huh. Watching some Lee Seung Ki videos, and saw this one he did with Nam Sang Mi, who plays a Bad Girl. Dang, where was this chutzpah when it was needed in Time of Dog and Wolf?
Happy OT everyone!
Hi robotmatsuri! I just read your post, and glad to know you're from seattle! yay!
one of these days all Seattlelites should meet and hang out! hehe I'm down for anything, just make sure it'll be Mon-Thursday night! kekeke Shout out to Laura253, gallivanter?! and all the peeps from seattle. What happened to our snow!? I missed winterwonderland last year. I want those snow! j/k
Hope you all having a good weekend so far, as for me I'm nursing a cold or flu. I can't even tell which one anymore..lol
Sandglass is soooo very goooood! Especially Choi Min Soo! In the beginning, he looked really dated with the t-shirt and jeans but later on, it's like, "I'm in luuuuurve!!!" (^___^).
This is one of my top five dramas of all time
bad-ass Nam Sang-mi didn't show up in TODAW cuz noons killer wasn't in it. BTW, is Lee Junki considered a noona killer?
@ mookie
Fire away - I love to hear your thoughts, esp. on Hsiao Fung (he's too *man* for me, actually).
Huang Xiao-min - "he can’t differentiate sleaze fr MichaelMiu’s brand of sex appeal." - good point, really, he's got one vibe and he projects it from character to character, drama to drama - how his version of Yang Guo and Wei Xiao-Bao ended up the same, I cannot for the life of me figure out.
Michael Mui's brand of sex appeal is dirty, but dangerous, like you're going to wake up in the morning by some beach in Phuket and just spent the wildest night of your life and you didn't even do the deed, but you're tingly all over. So LoCH 1982's version of MNC literally couldn't help herself, she didn't chastely love YK, she absolutely wanted the wildest night of her life with him and then sate some desire she can't even begin to admit to even herself.
Yuan Hong's brand of sex appeal in LoCH 2008 is the unpredictable bad boy, mecurial yet tender, wounded but devil may care - he'll rescue you from a bunch of thugs, you'll tend his wound, and end up on the back of his motorcycle somewhere on the Peak looking at the moon and wondering if you'll ever figure him out.
If Yuan Hong does Yang Guo, I'd be very very afraid a Guo Hsiang will go turn to the dark side and say "screw that Long-er of his, he's mine because we truly understand and appreciate each other's idiosyncracies and joie de vivre, and you left him for 16 years, and I'm going to fight for him and no way in hell am I going to become a nun because I let the love of my life go, even though he's like 18 years older than me."
It's Children's Day in Thailand today! How does this related to anything - none! Just wanted to share while I was browsing kdrama news on this wondeeful blog site! I'm currently switching between Brilliant Legacy and Return of Iljime, what a contrast. Yet, both are very enjoyable in its own merit. Hope 2010 brings us great dramas.
77 Samsooki : I stand corrected! The handy thing about the tourism Korea website lcoation list is that they tell you how to get there (what subway stop, what exit to take, etc). I didn't do the City Hall locations though b/c didn't go to Incheon except the airport. Next time.
@mzpakipot...........would love to meet and hang out with your guys in Seattle....I winter in San Diego but a Seattlelite the rest of the year...Hope you feel better soon.
@52 A.
Untouchable is pretty good with the suspenseful conspiracy theory plot. However, Yukie Nakama's character can get a bit annoying sometimes...but the photographer guy (don't know the actor's name but he's the real male lead) is sane enough to balance her out.
oh, yeah, i'm there. love the idea. I'm in the U-District Mon-Thurs. or would come up from Tacoma on a weekend. there are so many of us in the area, it's a mini DB convention!
I am one person who would be very happy with a snowless seattle winter. ^^
@momosan and the rest of the "Food Lady's", I love your passion not only for good food but for the real craft that goes into making a good dish a piece of art.
But we must acknowledge that working in a
"Commercial Kitchen" and cooking at home are two totally different arts, cooking at home I believe is " El Arte Grande" the grand art. My grandmother was a "Cocinera" so my mom, my aunts, my sisters and one of my brothers, and myself, all of us cook "Commercially" at one point or another in our life's, but nothing can beat homemade cooking, Commercial grade food its just that "commercial". now days no restaurant have the 6 to 8 hour time that grandma took to make a good pot of stew let alone the time that takes to make a proper "Bolognese sauce".
Cooking with Tomatos is a very skillful and difficult art, one that after 30 years since a learn how to cook still find hard to master. The problem that I have with most restaurants, specially ethnic ones at least here in the USA, is that unless the cater to their local community, their food will be of a substandard quality, like cooking calamari or octopus, they look quite easy but if you do not cook them just right you ruin the flavor.
Last, concerning people that do not know how to distinguish good from bad food my grandma used to said: "He who does not know the real God will bow down to any idol" So most people who did not grow eating proper Italian food the think the 'Olive Garden" is the best Italian restaurant in America...Ha,Ha,Ha... : O )
Happy Friday!!!
I just finished reading this OT...was very busy at work today ( my assistant called some of my Sat's patients and told them Mrs. cingdoc ( me, the wife doctor ) will be gone for 3 weeks, so I had to stay late and saw a few of "my" patients ( hmm..maybe Hubby should change his shower gel...just kidding) ;)
In a way, I'm nervous...I haven't travel alone for more than 15 years ( it's been family trip since then), but since I'm somewhat capable in speaking Cantonese ( and of course, English is still one of the languages spoken in HKG), I shouldn't get myself in any trouble. I think it's a combo of leaving my crazy schedule(taking care of 3 other people) here in the states , and knowing that my Mom is not doing too well that it's giving me butterflies. The fact that I can't "Rant and Rave" on OT with you guys doesn't help :(
I can't stay long...have to actually go to sleep now since my Hubby is dropping me off in LAX- early 7am (yes , my flight is noon, but he has to come back to work !!!)...I WILL MISS YOU ALL TERRIBLY...let me "catch up" with you guys when I come back (just think...I will be catching up on Smile, you; Assorted Gems, and finishing up IRIS ( and if the subs are up- Chuno???)
@83 hjkomo
Thanks! I've been looking forward to those scenes! Their fights are always amusing ^_^ I'm up to episode 28 and I really like how the story is unfolding and the pacing is done well (insane...I can't believe I've literally marathon through more than half the series in about a week) Oh and LTG is pretty attractive...
@38 djes
You're wish has come true...It's been confirmed that Taecyeon is going to be in Family Outing...I'm almost tempted to watch this now
I had been hoping to start LOCH 08 tonight...but it seems like the only way I can watch it is downloading the torrent which is in a batch with all 50 episodes (35 GB!)...I think I've been spoiled with all the direct downloads for kdramas.
I've just played your link to the theme song of Demi-gods and semi-devils (couldn't before because I was in a Youtube-free zone - *shakes fist at the PSB*), and OMG OMG the penny just dropped... I watched this as "The Immortals" back when it first came out. Loved the series, LOVE LOVE the theme song. Had forgotten all about it, but yes when that song played in my house... drop everything and rush to the telly, me and my dad. Sigh. The good old days. Thanks so much! It's really made my day. I've played it three times already!

Dang, where was this chutzpah when it was needed in Time of Dog and Wolf?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZh5mI7uHKM
OOH. I love going back and watching mini-dramas, aka music videos. I love all of the ones that tell stories.
Like this one by Wax (Fixing my makeup):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdFjcbGm8R8
Obviously, the one by Kiss (Because I'm a girl):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpmjs7_SZJo
Or this one, by Lee Seung Hwan (My Bad):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebG2KSw8pcM
Along with that one with Lee Seung Gi and Nam Sang Mi, those are my fav MV's of all time.
:D

Next time.

@52 A.
Untouchable is pretty good with the suspenseful conspiracy theory plot. However, Yukie Nakama's character can get a bit annoying sometimes...but the photographer guy (don't know the actor's name but he's the real male lead) is sane enough to balance her out.

Thanks! I've been looking forward to those scenes! Their fights are always amusing ^_^ I'm up to episode 28 and I really like how the story is unfolding and the pacing is done well (insane...I can't believe I've literally marathon through more than half the series in about a week) Oh and LTG is pretty attractive...
@38 djes
