Joint Security Area the musical
by javabeans
Ten years after director Park Chan-wook‘s film Joint Security Area made a splash as the highest-grossing Korean film at that time, a stage musical adaptation is being planned.
A producer with the musical explained on the 28th that the stage version is being produced for a theatrical run later this year: “Although there have been a lot of films dealing with the issue of North and South Korea’s separation, this is the first musical.” The film (which starred Song Kang-ho, Lee Young-ae, and Lee Byung-heon) unfolded around an illegal shooting in the DMZ, and a special investigation that ensues to try to figure out what triggered it. The film was based on the novel by Park Sang-yeon, DMZ, making this musical an adaptation of an adaptation.

In dramatic, large orchestral movement, the actors will sing --
North Korean soldier: Your shadow! Your shadow~~ Your sha-a-a-a-dow is on my si-i-i-de.
South Korean soldier: I will ste-e-ep back. (Softer, melodic tone) You and I are the same...the same...the same. Just a man...a man...a man. Circumstances have brought us to-ge-e-e-ether as enemies...but you could easily be my bro-o-o-ther.
NKS: (echoing softly) Bro-o-o-ther...
**I will gladly let the musical creators take that without any charge!**

Really, a musical? I loved the movie, its one of my favorites, but I can't see it as a musical, that's just too weird, it feels like it would be taking something away.

How do you create a musical based off a movie that's suppose to be a serious drama??

Well, Les Mis was pretty serious, as was Miss Saigon. Maybe it could work...?

@6....
While I'm skeptical of this production, there are some great musicals based on serious novels/stories like:
Les Miserables
Miss Saigon
West Side Story
Sweeney Todd
Evita

WEIRRDDDDDDD
too weird.
@4 - that was HILARIOUS - if the musical ends up being like that, props to you and that would just be too funny!!!!!! =D
miss saigon worked with the whole love story thing, and same with west side story. sweeney todd was about revenge. evita was about love for a country. and les mis was about revenge, with love, with revolution in the background.
i saw jsa long ago so if i remember correctly, it's just about a friendship and who shot whom or fired the shot...*STILL WEIRD*
if it were a PLAY rather than a MUSICAL - then maybe i wouldn't think it was so weird

Thanks for the JSA highlight, JB. The best intro to Korean movies. Hollywood remake and now Korean musical, well.. not bad at all.
No updates on Lee Byung Heon's new movies?

that was AAAAAAHHHHmaZIIIIIIINNG! :D
i think that a musical could actually work for JSA. it has a beautiful storyline, and adding the music will give the seriousness a lighthearted undertone.. i really really enjoyed this movie when i first watched it during my Lee Young Ae phase.. and didn't even realize i was watching LBH!

I love this film and I love the musicals! It seems a little weird, but thinking about it, perhaps it is not a bad idea. I have seen a lot of musicals based in sad histories, and some are very good works (Blood Brothers, for example).
