2009 MBC Drama Awards
by javabeans
December 30 was, once again, the night of the 2009 MBC Drama Awards. Unlike last year, there was no split Daesang award nor the ensuing controversy, but then again, there really was nobody with whom it could be shared. To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Go Hyun-jung was named Daesang winner for her delicious portrayal of Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok, which had a monstrous night. Full awards list below.
There was a little bit of grumbling over MBC’s overuse of the dual award, but since the Daesang wasn’t shared, it seems to be less of an issue this time around.
At first, it seems a little ridiculous that the awards were dominated so decisively by the two Queen series — Queen Seon-deok and Queen of Housewives. But on further reflection, it may not be so surprising after all — MBC had a pretty bad year outside of those two. Many of its dramas were not successful ratings-wise, no matter how well they were produced, and they were too quick to cut down their few mania hits like Tamra the Island and Strike Love. Perhaps the big surprise is that there were absolutely no awards given to Friend, Our Legend. What gives, MBC?

Go Hyun-jung wins the Daesang! Congrats to her; nobody came close to winning it away from her.
I don’t think Kim Nam-joo was a serious contender against Go Hyun-jung, but if anyone else was going to be considered, she’d have to be on the shortlist for headlining Queen of Housewives. She looks lovely and regal.
Yoon Sang-hyun was also not going to win the Daesang, although I did read a few articles speculating at his chances. But his breakout role in Queen of Housewives was just that enjoyable, particularly paired with Kim Nam-joo.
Lee Yo-won was ostensibly the lead of Queen Seon-deok, but I think it’s fair that she took home a Top Excellence Award rather than the Daesang. (I do, however, hate how she’s styled herself; she has dulled down her looks with that hair and dress.)
I love Uhm Tae-woong in general, but I can’t help thinking his Top Excellence Award is more a factor of being swept up in the Queen Seon-deok fervor than anything.
Kim Nam-gil, on the other hand, really earned his Excellence Award for Queen Seon-deok. (I suppose he won Excellence and not Top Excellence, even though most people will probably agree that he was stronger than Uhm, because his role was not originally planned to be as big as it became. Due to the audience love for his character, he only came to the fore in the latter half.)
Lee Hye-young got an award playing a late-blooming ugly duckling in Queen of Housewives. Always the fashionista, Lee is one of the few attendees who popped with that burst of color.
Paired alongside Lee Hye-young in Queen of Housewives, Choi Chul-ho‘s outwardly stiff character gave him a chance to exercise his comic chops, and he was given an Excellence Award.
Go Na-eun is one of the rare winners who had nothing to do with either Queen show; she won for Assorted Gems. The white dress looks wonderful on her, and she positively glows.
Im Joo-eun, a newcomer winner for Hon, sorta fades into her neutral palette, but she looks young and fresh. She’s definitely on my radar as an actress to watch.
Yoo Seung-ho was given a newcomer award playing a young king in Queen Seon-deok…
…while his castmate Lee Seung-hyo took home the other newcomer award as Al-cheon in Queen Seon-deok.
Im Joo-hwan finally got his big break (though no award) with Tamra the Island. Inasmuch as I can see why the Seon-deok stars were nominated for newcomer awards and had higher profiles for being in a bigger drama, I really think Im deserved more credit for what he did in Tamra.
Im Joo-hwan’s Tamra co-star Seo Woo, on the other hand, was recognized with a newcomer award. I don’t really think that kind of shapeless dress works on someone so petite; short and structured would have played up her youthful charm more than this long black shift.
Nam Ji-hyun is quickly building up a resume playing memorable child parts for big stars; she won here for being young Deok-man in Queen Seon-deok (then went on to be Han Ye-seul’s childhood counterpart in Will It Snow For Christmas). She’s also growing up! I normally hate peeptoe boots, but she looks very cute wearing them — nice way of mixing softness and youth with a bit of an edge.
Ahn Gil-kang (Queen Seon-deok) and Na Young-hee (Queen of Housewives) were both winners:
Seo Young-hee was another Seon-deok winner. Loving that eggplant color on her.
As for Jang Geun-seok… well, it could have been worse? (Although the blue velvet jacket with black pants is just bad. He just looks uncomfortable.) I had to rack my brains to figure out why Jang was here at the MBC awards, since his big performance was in an SBS drama (and he hosts the SBS awards tomorrow). He did appear in an MBC series, Beethoven Virus, although that was part of last year’s awards cycle.
Likewise, Lee Yeon-hee‘s most recent MBC tie was in a drama awarded in last year’s ceremony, East of Eden, which ended earlier this year. She’s positively radiant. The short, flirty dress makes her look fresh and lively.
Part of me finds Min Hyo-rin‘s (Triple) electric-pink number a little glaring, but in close-ups she looks really cute. And I always appreciate a flash of color when most of the others opted for blacks, whites, and neutrals.
Seo Shin-ae (High Kick Through the Roof) is adorable. I love that she’s dressy and put-together without looking fussy. And she always looks so happy!
Don’t love the cut, shiny material, or big bow on Sunwoo Sun‘s (Queen of Housewives) gown, but somehow I think she pulls off the look. She’s wearing IT, rather than letting it wear her, and confidence always looks good.
On the other hand, my first thought at seeing Jeon No-min (Queen Seon-deok) in his sequiny jacket was, “Sparkle Motion!”
Comedian Lee Hwi-jae came with Seon-deok‘s Park Ye-jin:

What a boring award, mostly wins by the two Queen shows!! MBC need to buck up and have a better spread of good dramas! But recently they have a spate of resignations, it was them right?

Question: So are the MBC awards only for the dramas that aired on MBC?
(sorry if the question is too obvious. It's just that we don't have a network award show like that here in the U.S. It seems very limiting.)

Yes, each station (MBC, KBS and SBS) has their own end of the year award shows solely for dramas which aired on their respective stations. KBS and SBS drama awards are tonight. Mayhap we'll see it covered on dramabeans tomorrow.

"Yes, each station (MBC, KBS and SBS) has their own end of the year award shows solely for dramas which aired on their respective stations. "
Yeah, it's a way for the stations to reward their employees. Think of it as somewhere between the Corporate End-of-year luncheon/dinner and the MTV Movie Video Awards. The Baeksang, which is in Spring, function as the "Emmys", where there is real prestige.
Also, these awards shows represent how the stations view its programming for that year. In that way, these shows send a signal to us what shows "mattered" to the corporation and what their outlook is for the next year.
And this is where MBC is disconcerting. Let's put it this way. Almost NOTHING from their Wednesday/Thursday slot got nominated. Basically, MBC is saying that half of their programming schedule was a disaster. And even from a artistic standpoint, they weren't willing to recognize the mania hits. Keep in mind -- we have to thank MBC for the two seminal mania dramas: Ruler of Your Own World and Damo. Although it's true that KBS has more or less become the patron saint of the mania drama, it's still disconcerting to see MBC ignore the quality of their weekend drama slot (in recent years: Friend, Le Dolce Vita, Que Sera Sera, etc.)
If you go and rewatch 2007, which may have been the best year MBC had this decade, you'll see a radically different presentation. There were 5 super-shows that got big attention from MBC: The Legend, Coffee Prince, Time of Dog and Wolf, White Tower, and Yi San. Each one got a proper promotion, each one won its share of awards. Also, MBC managed to award a bunch of other shows, including Thank You showing they were really happy to spread the wealth.
Then you go to 2008, which MBC perceived as such a huge disaster that they threw their own awards show under the bus to protect East of Eden.
Between these two extremes, you got 2009. If you watch the presentation, it was like literally only 3 shows existed for the night. Nobody from Friends showed up. Nobody from Return from Iljimae (which IMO was the real no-show of the night -- I mean, seriously what was up with that?!?) showed up. The people that were there -- from Triple, from Creating Destiny, from you name it -- were mostly ignored for essentially 3 hours of the Two Queens.
Finally, a lot of the winners from last year weren't here. No Kim Myung Min. No Song Seung Heon. Keep in mind -- the Daesang winner from the previous year almost always shows up. What happened?
I don't know -- the MBC 2009 Award Show was okay (Queen Seon Duk was a legitimate national drama and Go Hyung Jung was and is an awesome story for 2009), but there was again disturbing messages if you knew what to look for. It's not about which shows deserves to win. It's about how MBC saw itself for 2009.
If you've watched KBS2 the past few years, you'll know that they've struggled with ratings for the past few years. This year, they got huge hits with BBF, Iris, Sons of Sol Pharmacy House, etc. (And a show with fairly strong ratings -- for KBS shows at least -- with My Fair Lady.) But, to their credit, you didn't pick that up during their award shows. They'd reward their relative hits (and of course overdose their love on their weekend sageuks), but they were always good at singling out the one or two non-hits that in their mind deserves to be recognized.
Which is the point. KBS, even though their 9-11 shows are often in 3rd place, at least tries to maintain an image of perspective and balance. Even in lean times. That they valued the mania stuff, the challenging stuff, the blockbuster stuff, etc.

haha it can be amusing reading some of these comments that oh no! 'MBC did it again' with them giving awards only for 'monster ratings' drama series, but in forums else where they brag about SBS' BL would probably win most of the awards BECAUSE of its 'monster ratings' funny funny, criticsm only applies to MBC I guess.
If SBS think that the performance of Lee Seung-ki in BL drama is even as good as C&A's So Ji-sub or STS' Ji-sung as Dae Sang worthy then SBS is no better than MBC? haha

"criticsm only applies to MBC I guess."
Well, when you hand out the majority of your awards to only two shows, that's kinda sad, don't you think? Neither KBS nor SBS does that. Besides, nobody has an issue with Go Hyun Jung winning the Daesang. I can see the argument for Lee Seung Gi winning the Daesang -- was it the best performance? Nah, even Lee Seung Gi would agree with that. But Brilliant Legacy's popularity was entirely on its terms, by word of mouth. People loved that show. I think they were one of the bets couples of 2009, even though I was rooting for Bae Soo Bin for the entire show.
SBS has no problems this year. They got bonafide-hits: Temptation of Wife, Brilliant Legacy, Temptation of Angel, and mid-tier hits: City Hall, Smile, Cain and Abel, Swallow the Sun, Style, Will It Snow for Christmas. They also got a mania hit with You're Beautiful. Very likely that almost all of the listed shows will get some hardware.

@62 belleza : Queen Seon duk is now airing on our local TV. Too bad they put it on night time's slot - most likely because the station doesn't want to confront it with local dramas ( which are suck ).
But the possibility for the cast to come to Indonesia...is kinda low. This particular TV station had invited Lee Dong Wook when My Girl aired here, and invited Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin of It Started with A Kiss. So they tend to invite younger casts, who attract younger audiences. QSD is not really popular - usually people on their 20-30s who likes this kind of drama. ( but then I hadn't watch my TV for almost a year now, so I might be wrong )
Re :the Awards - Oh, Jeon Min-seo (Job Well Done) didn't come? I really like her! Chae Rim and her were the only reason I managed to see the drama up to 20th episode.

I have seen almost if not all korean dramas shown in the Philippines, indeed Queen Seon Deok is the most interesting and admirably great. I've already seen the entire series, my tears suddenly burst upon seeing the death of Bidam, he's not a culprit nor a good guy but a victim of circumstances.
Although it was a tragic ending for Bidam, still, I salute him for his remarkable performance also to the entire cast, crew and makers of Queen Seon Deok - job well done.
Looking forward to see more of Bidam - Kim Nam Gil...

Exactly what I'm thinking. I only finished QSD a week ago, and wondered why UTW received the Top Excellence award, not KNG. KNG shone from the moment he burst onto the screen. His charisma and stage presence stood out even from all the young, testosterone-filled crowd (Hi! Alcheon, et.al !)

I don't mean to offend KNG's army since I, too, admire his performance in QSD. However, I think, UTW deserved his award since he, too portrayed Kim Yushin's character well - a man of principle and a man "merely living in sincerity." I also laud young Deokman's performance. NJH really did great! I just finished watching QSD last night and I'm kinda disappointed with the ending. Something is not quite right.
Congratulations to all the cast of QSD! The cast were really of a kind - remarkable actors and actresses!

i think UTW is the better actor. however, his role was straight and the narrow, hence the predictability and stuffiness of the character. still, there were some instances (like when he broke down) that were sort of forced. but the strength and goodness of the character shone through -- nevertheless, the audience liked characters a little bit risque and "goody goody" roles tend to be scorned.
in contrast to bidam -- both good and evil -- now the audience give a collective swoon. the problem with KNG, he tends to get cheesy with his dramatic scenes - when he swore fealty to deokman, when he is acting with munno -- the senior actor chewed him up. KNG was "acting" as Bidam. and the cutesy close ups. the director should know when to control both his camera and his actor.
still, i love QSD. despite its playing to the house later on.

I think Uhm Tae-Woong deserved Top Excellence. There's only one way to portray a character with only three or four defining characteristics - Yushin is loyal, principled, rational and devoted to Lee Yo-Won's character. That character has a very limited scope and UTW does it as well as anybody else could have done it. That doesn't take anything away from KNG - who was excellent as Bidam -but Tae-Woong really does deserve Top Excellence.
And the real feature relationship of the show was between UTW and Lee Yo-Won. I think everyone was swept away by KNG's performance as Bidam and the way he expresses his love for the leading lady that they ignore everything that occurs in the first fifty episodes of the drama. That being said some probably feel the chemistry between KNG and LYW was better (that really doesn't mean there was no chemistry between UTW and LYW) but UTW has virtually no romantic scenes of any kind from episode 26 onwards - their feelings only crop up in some tense situation and that relationship I feel has much more depth and solidity and is not a usual romantic, sentimental attachment. Like LYW said, Bidam's fans probably decided the award.
Anyway there were other pairs that were obviously more suited for the award but popularity awards I suppose are always given to what people like - not to what is the real, or the actual relationship of the shows.
