The Host 2 to be film sequel and video game

The Host [괴물] is one of Korea’s top box office hits of all time, and now a sequel AND a video game have been announced, to be produced simultaneously. Given the success of the predecessor, it appears producers are going all-out — their plan is to release The Host 2 in 2011 as a blockbuster film as well as on online, console, and mobile gaming platforms. Producing the movie version is film company Chungeorahm, while Queen’s Soft takes on the game.
Queen’s Soft is commencing development to correspond with the film’s release; the game features mutant humans with special skills as a first-person shooter. It is a 10 milllon dollar “global project” which has already raised 2 million dollars in investments from Singapore’s Media Development Authority. This past July, MDA also revealed it would invest in the film sequel through Boku Films, the nation’s largest film company.
The CEO of Chungeorahm Films, Choi Yong-bae, said, “There are instances where the game is made after the film has been completed, but this is the first time in Korea that both are being made at the same time.” The film’s script is in the finishing stages, and soon the director and casting will take place in order to begin production early next year.
I dunno… I know that The Host was a big hit, but you’ve got to attribute much of that to its director Bong Joon-ho (who went on to direct Mother), as well as actors like Song Kang-ho, Byun Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doo-na… Without them, I’m not sure how much you can count on a follow-up to recapture that success. We shall see.

The Host is one of my favorite movies. It's the movie I made everyone I know watch. I really don't like the idea of a sequel.

I remember Song Kang-ho also said that he was in The Host only because it was directed by Bong Joon-ho and Bong asked him to star in it. So yeah... I don´t know what to expect from the sequel...

The Host was my first Korean DVD I ever bought. Very entertaining. Hope Song Kang-ho is part of the cast otherwise, it just won't be the same.

I quite enjoy this movie. It is not on the top of my favourite Korean movie list, but it’s a nice watch. I find the Korean humour very strong in the movie, which is actually a good thing! I frankly do not like the idea of a sequence. It may just end up being a really bad or average action movie.
I just wonder when the Korean cinema will thrive again? It seems that we do not have the like of Old Boy (and the whole revenge trilogy) or My sassy girl for such a long time already. Kdrama suffers from lack of creativity as well (EXCEPT for the current You are beautiful, which is like a fresh breeze!)

I love The Host and think it is so much better than many mega-budget disastrous movies coming out of Hollywood. While the special and horrific effects are very much part of its success, its greatest strength as a memorable movie to me is the human side of that story. The single most memorable aspect is the courage and perseverance of a dysfunctional family united. Each quirky character from the grandpapa down to the brave little girl stays in our mind for years to come.
I doubt the sequel would surpass the original from that perspective.

@bleu: Totally agree. Arrow in the butt and random starwars lightsaber...I love those two MVs....
I love the Host! If there's a sequel it should be the Host vs the Stay Puft Marshmallow man vs Godzilla. That would be quality.
