Tamra DVD will contain 21 episodes
by javabeans
Good news for Tamra the Island fans: Not only is the mania trendy-sageuk series getting a director’s cut DVD set, it’s been announced that the DVD set will have an extra episode.
The drama had been planned for 20 episodes (and filmed months in advance) before MBC cut it down to 16 episodes due to low ratings despite fan fervor and general praise. That sparked massive fan outcry and an extended campaign first to save the series, then to release a full DVD set with the unaired episodes. The former failed, but the latter was successful. As a result, beginning with Episode 11, the production had to quickly edit down the remaining ten episodes into six, leaving a lot of material on the cutting room floor.
The DVD is good news for fans who felt that emotions changed too quickly in the broadcast version, since a lot of development was omitted for time. In particular, the box set promises to show Park Kyu’s (Im Joo-hwan) management of the port opening and its problems with “much more detailed development.”
In total, it will contain an extra episode’s worth of material from its original plan. Group Eight CEO Song Byung-joon explained on November 10, “After editing the complete series, the DVD came to 21 parts. … The video editing is complete, and now the sound editing is being worked on.” Note that this does not mean there is additional material after the series’ end; it means that when the material was re-edited into its originally planned components, they came to an extra hour’s worth.
The DVD set will release in early December. The full series will also be re-broadcast next year on cable television, beginning in March.

JB, this post has made my entire day! Thank you so much. If it wasn't for your amazing blog, I would have never encountered Tamra through your early recaps and the great word-of-mouth from the Islanders.
This is a wonderful drama, so full of heart and amazing performances from its young and up-and-coming cast. I have my wad of cash ready to plunk down and buy this baby! 21 episodes, it's more than I expected, this made me even happier than watching YB episode 11 today. ;-)

This is wonderful news! I loved Tamra although I never finished it after it got cut, I did not want to 'destroy' the original story. Soon I will finally be able to watch it!
This really made my day. :)

Yay! This is such great news for fans like me who cut themselves off after episode ten rather that watch the over-condensed episodes. This is what we've been waiting for!

Hmm...they displeased the fans by cutting the series short and now they're going to make them pay to watch it? I guess that's good marketing strategy.

I see I'm not far behind my sisters in saying - HURRAH!!! This made my day! :D
What a pleasant surprise that it's going to have 21 episodes rather than 20.
That's very unusual, indeed, but I'm not complaining at all....I'm thrilled! Deeper exploration of the character and plot development...and more PARK KYU -> YES, PLEASE! Teehee, I feel like a kid who's just walked into a candy store the size of Costco. :P

@5,
The production company had no power over the broadcast station's decision to cut the series. The prodco is the one who was ultimately shafted, because it was their time and money poured into the drama, and they got cut short. They're doing the fans a favor by putting out the full series on DVD, as fans had requested, without the cuts mandated by the broadcast station.

Oooooh, everyone from Team Park Kyu is here (well, except for my simplesim-moni, any anyone else I missed?) - it's either like our TPK radars went off all at once (I wish), or else we live at DB (guilty as charged).
We need to do a marathon of the 21-ep DVD set as a team, no?

I have never bought a Korean Drama DVD, so please do not blame me for my question, please:)
Do those DVD's have english subs ?
Or will Tamna have english subs ?

@Madita
That depends from where you get the dvds. Several official boxsets, particularly those released for the US market, DO have English subs and the quality is pretty good. Just be careful cos there are some dodgy websites that might sell pirated dvds with awful subs.
I suggest you check http://www.yesasia.com http://www.dvdasian.com or, say, Amazon.com for legit dvds (if you buy at yesasia, they usually have several boxsets of the same drama, released for different markets. Carefully read the info about each set for many versions might not have Eng subs. It's all written there though). You can find MBC's official dvds for the US market at http://www.mbcdvd.com. Oh and http://hanbooks.com/ sells dvds as well, but I've only bought books from them
Another thing you might want to check carefully. The dvds region.

Hurrah! I stopped at episode 7 and made a decision to watch the series in its entirety when the DVD came out. This makes me very happy. Now I can finally finish the series the way it was meant to be watched. Plus, I know what i want for Christmas as well :)

@14,
I read some of the articles on the DVD production, I searched through some of the likely online stores looking for whether the Director's Cut will have english subs, but I wasn't able to find whether it will or not.
However, there are a few things to note:
1. It is very likely that English subs will be included.
2. It is very unlikely that you will be able to find the Director's Cut DVD set with a north american region code (Region 1). So, if you do go out and get this, make sure you have a DVD that is region-free or at least plays Region 3 (for Korea) DVDs.

This is very good news!! I only watched the first few episodes of Tamra and meant to continue when there were more subs available, then the whole slaughter happened and I decided to wait for the DVDs. Sounds like they had a lot of good material since it amounted to more than the original 20 episodes! Can't wait!
I have to say 2009 has been a much better year for kdrama than 2008. There are a few real gems from this year; Return of Iljimae, Story of a Man, You're Beautiful and City Hall (which I am watching right now). I am also enjoying Iris (but have to admit it's entirely because of LBH ^_^).

The 21 episode dvd this article talks about is the director's cut version (R-3, no English subtitle) for people who've prepaid for the DVD. I'm not sure if the same director's cut dvd will go out in the market for purchase at the same time this dvd comes out, but I'm sure it will be available in the market eventually.
As for the US version DVD with English subtitle, someone from Soompi thread emailed YA Entertainment and received an email back from them stating that they have contracted with Group Eight to produce Tamra dvd and they were discussing the details at the time. According to the email, the US version DVD will be released sometime in March and it didn't state how many episodes the dvd would have. I suggest contacting them for further details.
