Smile extended to 46 episodes

With its ratings approaching 20%, Smile‘s run has been extended by 16 episodes from its original 30. It will air 46 episodes and wrap at the end of February.

An article announcing the extension attributes the steadily increasing ratings and popularity of Smile to its ability to provide comic relief among the many “makjang” dramas that are currently on the air. Makjang dramas such as Angel’s Temptation, which is currently airing, use sensationalist, over-the-top storylines to hook viewers—a far cry from the realistic, homey charm of Smile. The burgeoning feelings between Jung-in and Hyun-soo, as well as the comic family scenes, have given viewers “wholesome” laughs.

The series’ writer Moon Hee Jung, whose last work was on Last Scandal, has done an exceptional job so far. The plot has taken longer to develop in this series than in a 16- or 20-episode series, but there have been plenty of giggle-worthy moments to keep the pacing tight.

And there are quite a few leads that have been hinted at, but have yet to be fleshed out—ownership of the Seo house; Han-se vs. Hyun-soo; Sung-joon and Ji-soo; Ji-soo’s backstory; even Jung-in’s backstory, which we still know very little about; among others. I’ve also got a soft spot for Kyung-soo and hope he gets a chance to shine. Hopefully this gives the drama plenty of material to work through in the remaining 30 episodes, without getting draggy or detracting from its main draw, the relationship between Jung-in and Hyun-soo.

Plus, I’m an optimist at heart, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that Smile will be able to keep up its momentum–the laughs, character development and romantic tension–without having to revert to maudlin/angsty plot twists. Angst has its place, but Jung-in and Hyun-soo are such refreshing characters that I’d hate to see them fall prey to cliche!

I think both main leads have done exceptional job in this drama. I love their relationship in this one. Creating destiny tries to build up similar kind of bickering couple but it seems not work smoothly like in this drama. But from 30 eps to 46 eps, just wonder how much they will drag the storyline... The space is fine now...

I love this drama but I rather they did not extend it. Every time they extend a drama it starts to run out of steam midway, jmo.

I agree the drama is great but if they extend it they just drag the storyline and it becomes boring. 30 would have been just right . I like dramas to have between 16 to 24 episodes max after they just dragggg

I read about this earlier in the Soompi thread and really my thought is this could very well be a double edged sword. Of course it's great if the story holds on but such a big extension might signal excessive plot dragging. I don't mind being clear and frank that the biggest reason I'm watching this so fervently is because of Hyun-soo and Jung-in (and now a bit of Han-se...oh admit it..he's getting hilarious!) If the extension means more air time for the older generation and such, then I can't say I'm going to be too interested.

Let's just hope things stay tight and awesome until February!

Best News ever! With all the 30 episodes, no its actually 50 episodes discussions we've had, I was leaning more towards 50. I love, love, love Smile You. I feel nice and warm and giggly when Jung-In and Hyun-Soo are together. Episode 16 blew my mind!!!!!!!!! It is so AWESOME. I watched the final scene 5 times because it made me squeel so much. There is nothing special or convoluted or angsty about it. Just Hyun-Soo and Jung-In smiling...awwwww their realtionship is so real, I just love it. it reminds me of the leads in 9E2O, very natural.

Thank You, to Soyjoy and DW4P for doing the recaps. You are doing an amazing job.

I am excited because there will be more Hyun-soo & Jung-in. But I'm worried that it might get draggy later on. Though, I've been impressed by the consistent pacing in the last couple of episodes and hope that it can till the end of the series. Also, I did think with the multiple story lines, that 30 might have been too short.

After today's episode YAB and the preview for the next episode---I can't take it anymore. There is a limit on illogical and there's also a limit on how much you can drag out a plot line/certain characters' roles. It's still cute and wonderful, but I'm at my wits' end! In contrast, I've been finding Smile, You so refreshing. The love story moves forward in a logical, realistic way and it's avoiding (so far) the typical melodrama cliches. I know some will arise eventually, but so far the relationships and how they unfold is the main draw (especially Soo-in couple!). For a character who generally would be a second lead in a typical kdrama, Hyun-soo is very open about his feelings but he knows when to move on even though it's hard. And even the (supposedly evil, manipulating second lead) Lee Han-se, provides comical relief and moves along the story without us being too annoyed. Smile, You has become my number one kdrama for this season. So definitely more yay than nay for the extension.

I share the skepticism as other about the 46 episodes, but the series was earlier posted as 50 episodes, so the writers may have been preparing for 50 eps all along. At its current pace, Jung-in and Hyun-soo will be married with kids when the drama ends... haha. That's just wishful thinking.
It would be apropos to end with their wedding, no? And Jung-in can wear a ripped up wedding gown to symbolize the good luck it brought her the first time around.

And episode 15-16 recap is coming soon! @GG I watched the end a few times also! LOVED IT!

Soyjoy - thanks for sharing the news with us!!

omo!!! i just hope they don't drag & stretch the story out so thinly that i'll stop watching... i thought that 30 episodes would be enough but i guess SBS thought differently...
but yay more of sooin couple!!! my main reason of watching this show is to see how the story about this adorable couple unfolds... i hope we get to see them get married and seeing them with kids would be such an extra bonus!!!

Whoa...46 episodes? That's a lot. I started watching SMILE a couple of days ago and I think it's funny. However, I think the extra 16 episodes is stretching it way too far.

I'm happy that the show is enjoying healthy ratings and gaining more attention. I really really hope that this is the break that Jung Kyung Ho needs. He's such an underrated actor who really has a knack for comedy. Also, it's a fun family show and Jung-in and Hyun-soo's relationship is a breath of fresh air. Having said that, the show didn't quite pick up until episode 6 and the extension is not a small one, not by 4 episodes but 16. While there are definitely a lot of stories that can still be covered, I'm afraid that they'll drag out the Han-se vs. Hyun-soo and Jung-in vs. Jung-Kyung storylines for ratings sake. This will probably also mean more of Jung-kil's selfish and immature antics. However the optimist in me hopes they use the 16 episodes wisely and develop the rest of the Seo family into likeable relatable people.

When I first heard the news a bubble of happiness rose up - more eps = more SooIn aka Jung-Ho. However, experience has concluded that extensions rarely add value to a K production, so I do have concerns.

I never expected this drama to be as good as it is, and the pairing? SooIn is going down in my list (which is really short compared to the way-too-many Kdramas I've watched) as one of the best pairings I've seen. Even if the drama does end up dragging, I don't think it will affect the amazing chemistry of SooIn. lols. It's not like it'll the first time I adored a pairing, but found the drama itself mediocre.

Also being an optimist, I hope soyjoy your right, and that Writer Moon had enough material for a 50 ep drama to begin with and is just slowly ironing out the details. Hope SY production continues with it's creativity and refreshing character protrayals. Smilers, fighting!

^_^ i am so super excited!! when i realized that we were more than half way done (when it was slated to end with 30 episodes), i got so sad that i had only so many episodes left.

i just hope the writer does us (the viewers) justice by keeping the story as entertaining as it has been thus far!!

here's to hoping for the best for Smile, You!!

this is slightly good news for me since i thought it was supposed to be 50. but now, it's 4 episodes shorter! yay!...sort of.... ^ ^

it's been 16 episodes and the story seems to have just begun for our favorite couple so i have hope in this drama. oh! there's more to jungin's backstory to come? i'm excited about that!

WTh man....why do they always do that.. Making the series longer does not mean it's better. IT gets draggy and looses "it" factor. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr how annoying with these tv stations
