Kim Hyun-joong cast in remake of Kimi wa petto

I say this without snarkiness (a quality I think is growing far too overrated these days anyway): One would have thought that idol singer Kim Hyun-joong‘s stiff, uncomfortable acting debut in Boys Before Flowers earlier this year would have convinced people to STOP casting him in high-profile projects, but alas ’tis not the case. He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet. The j-dorama aired in 2003 on TBS.

Like Boys Before Flowers, the Japanese original starred the popular idol-actor Matsumoto Jun (opposite Koyuki). The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man. She and the man, who is first taken in and affectionately called her “pet,” gradually fall in love. The female lead is still currently casting.

The contract has yet to be finalized, according to Kim’s management, but should be made official soon. The film will begin shooting as soon as the casting is complete, and aims for a release date next year.

(I really thought Kim Hyun-joong would go the way of Se7en, as in, he’d realize that he was sorely limited in the acting arena and focus on his music. Coupled with his seemingly indifferent attitude toward acting in the first place — he had to be persuaded to take the BBF role by management who were eager to heighten his name recognition — I figured he’d fade from acting, not be cast as the lead in another high-profile remake. Again, I mean this without sarcasm, but I sincerely hope he hies himself to some intensive acting training if he wants a career in the field.)

Breaking News (veracity yet to be verified):

Su-Ae has apparently been cast as the leading lady!! I love Su-Ae, she is an absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing actress, and another situational lovestory, I actually think she can guide KHJ. Hopes raised! This may just be a twist on 9E2O (fim version).

See below:

"This drama better known as Kimi wa petto in Japan, was a very popular drama in 2003 and originally based off a manga (comic). The basic premise is that of a female editor (Su-Ae playing Ji Eun Ee) at a fashion magazine whom finds a good looking young man that ran away from home (Kim Hyun Joong playing Kang In Ho). When she finds him, she invites him to live with her in her home and she calls him "her pet."

How is this post "disappointing" and how is JB supposed to be "bigger than this"? Man, fans getting so offended by an inoffensive post just shows how unreasonable FANS are, not the blogger. There's nothing here that's a bashing comment or unreasonable. We all know KHJ's acting is not good.

Rock on, DBers!

I hate people who call others an "ANTI" for having a real reason to think someone's acting is subpar. Being an anti means you bash for no reason, you make personal slurs or you throw insults because you hate the artist. If you think his acting is great, big whoopdy for you, but don't call me an anti for thinking he's godawful when HE IS GODAWFUL.

I've seen a lot of his activities captured in Youtube and his BOF drama and I'm totally amazed at KHJ's attempts to explore what is out there for him . Not many young people have that kind of guts . Let him do all that as lost exuberance of youth is difficult to capture back . I understand the pain he must have gone through being away for 5 months and even more after to promote BOF from the group he painstakingly have lead and cared for . How the poor guy must have been torn between his duties to his group and to his personal dreams .

I agree with what the few others said to give him a chance to try a range of roles .Let us be supportive and not to put all the blame on him in his past acting (I'd say for a first timer It was not bad at all ). By the way , he is not in total control here, remember there is the script and the director who wields vast control . I read somewhere that directors in Korea are very meticulous and they shoot straight for many many hours in the most forbidding season (winter ). They always show their actors immersed in snow or crying and getting drenched in the rain .

As a parent , I would like to give KHJ my warm hugs in support of making his dreams come true -to pursue what he thinks is the best -although also to learn to rest and to relax the natural way . Learn a lot along the way ,not to forget the people who offered you their love and understanding and most of all enjoy your youth . Good luck and have the best of health.

Its not snarky to state your concern. I really enjoyed kimi wa petto more so than hana yori dango so to it would be such a waste to have it ruined with a lead who to be honest has shown very little acting ability.

I am willing to give HJ another chance at a drama, but if he screws up this one, it might be hard to recover. I do think he was by far the worst Rui out of all 3 versions. It was very very hard to want to watch him and he had soo many scenes in BOF. But for me, people should be given another chance, so I don't have a problem with that. I didn't think Vic was all that good at Rui either but eventually he did some really decent roles. And his personality in interviews and shows comes across a little bit like HJ back then - a little young and immature but definitely had a fun and cute and quirky side that could be drawn out. Anything is possible - I think he can do it even though his first attempt was not good.

I have seen KWP with Matsumoto Jun back in the day and I only thought it was ok. He was quite young then as well and he was a little over the top but then again I think to play that kind of character, one kinda has to be over the top. I have seen him in WGM and that was interesting… so I think with some hard work and dedication, he could pull it off. I'm not a fan of his, nor do I think he's particularly good looking, but I do think he's a decent singer/musican which of course does not translate into anything in terms of acting. I'll see what happens.

I can see both sides of the opinions here… HJ did do a pretty poor job as a first timer so I think people are justified in their opinion/concern. Everyone has an "equal" opportunity to support or not to support this drama, and we should all respect that.

What is with all the MatsuJun dramas Korea's been remaking lately?
It's frustrating and annoying!
There's a reason kdramas and jdramas are two entirely different genres and people enjoy them as such! aish..

I agree with a previous comment...they should have waited for KDW to get out of the army before doing this if they have to. Haha! He's the only one I can see in this role...or maybe Hong Ki or Jang Geun Suk. And why another fashion mag? It was a Tokyo newspaper!! I beginning to hate fashion mags in tv now.

Whatever they do I hope they won't rush it like BOF and ruin it

So many comments, it will take a while to read through them all. I haven't figured out if this is going to be a film or a drama ?!?

True, Kim Hyun-joong did't show well in BOF - but I saw him on a variety show and he showed better. He definitely has a sweetness about his personality that could work in KimiWaPet. I thought the direction in BOF stank - so perhaps given better direction he may pull this off.

Jun showed that adolescent/young adult untainted fearlessness that draws me to this dramas. I thought he was memorable and am still an avid fan.

Most of Kim Hyun-joong’s really bad BOF scenes were interacting with the old guy and the girl/woman. I thought he mirrored the HYD actor pretty well, actually.

Let's hope Kim Hyun-joong does well opposite an older more versatile actress. I think it should be ... Kim Sun Ah :)

Thanks for being able to comment -

Kima wa Petto was hilarious but I have serious doubts on this considering KHJ's acting skills. I mean seriously he needs more acting workshops before jumping into lead roles. No offense but his take on Hanazawa Rui in BBF was as stiff and fish-eyed as one can be. I know he was autistic but I just didn't get anything from his character. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong.

Okay, since everyone here is bashing poor KHJ -- and I did my share as well -- I will throw in something positive.

First of all, BOF was a stinking pile of cr-p so maybe we shouldn't judge actors based on their roles in that...piece of stinking pile of horses---t.

Considering how BOF was shot, how completely senseless and incomprehensible the writing was, and how the writers and PD of BOF were content with just showing off pretty faces, it is hard to gauge what an actor's ability might be. Not everyone is a Lee Min Ho or a Jang Geun Suk...Some people are natural actors and some are not.

I hope that KHJ does take serious acting lessons, study the craft, evaluate his shortcomings, and really try hard to do well. I think I recall from BOF days that he would call his acting coach for advice -- and that kind of commitment and drive should be rewarded.

I don't think he is relying on his good looks! He is a very intelligent man, from what I have gathered. I admit to having a strange kind of crush on him and have watched most of the subbed material on him. So I think he is sincere in his efforts. His management people, on the other hand, might be using him more for his looks...

So all the best to KHJ!

First KHJ was compared to Oguri Shun, and honestly, most actors would come up short there. Now he will be compared to Matsujun. If he (or his management) really wanted (him) to do more acting, why not do a role that nobody had done before? It's brutal this way. :-(

After the destruction of Domyoji character (previously acted by Jun Matsumoto i the Jdrama version) in the Kdrama version BOF by a non actor called Lee min ho (crybaby weak vasool unnatutaly funny and violent Domyoji) This momo turn to be destroyed in an upcoming Kmovie with another terrible actor who acted too in this S..t drama, Booze Over Flowers called KHJ.
However momo character maybe easier for KHJ to act compare to Rui character (silent calm cold rich, elegant but at the same time imposing, and not a sissy) but the problem here is : can KHJ be momo (not feeling he acts but he is the character ) ? Indeed Jun didn't acted momo but he was momo (like he was Domyoji Tsukasa in HYD or Sawada in Gokusen...)

AND PLEASE NOM KITTEY STOP INSULTING JGS BY SAYING HIS NAME IN THE SAME SENTENCE THAN LMH. LMH A NATURAL ACTOR ?? LOL HE ACTED NOTHING LIKE DOMYOJI IN THIS S....Y DRAMA ! Can't act funny, can't act violent, overacted crying....

But people lets give Hyun Joong our support , and pray to GOD!, that he doesn't murder the fond memories we have of our "Kimi Wa Petto".
If we're really lucky maybe the kiss scene will still rock as hard as it did with Jun.

Erm..wow

So many comments..=]

I've heard of kimi wa petto before but I've never watched it and i've heard of the manga Tramps Like Us but i never put 2 and 2 together =/

But from the sypnosis, honestly I thought Hong Ki would suit this role but imho, i thought Soo Ae would be the kick-ass female lead too.. :S

But i just thought there would be an obvious age gap between the two.

I also thought KHJ was lifeless as Ji Hoo, maybe he was just exhausted...

He was definitely the stiffest actor out of all of the BBF cast, but the writing didn't do any justice either. I mean Ga Eul was my favourite character but she turned clingy. However, I still love KSE as an actress =D

But let's give KHJ a chance, eh? =)

@ Lily, please don't try to force your opinions on others =/

Sorry if I sounded harsh but it amazes me when people still put JGS (who can forget himself to act his characters like it's showed in HGD, YAB, HJY, Happy Life, Baby and I...) on the same level as "actors" like LMH when the latter (so called Domyoji) was nothing like the character (prince charming dancing in boysbands, afraid of everything, try too hard to be funny) and was only good at showing overacted crying.

I think we are all on drunk on you're Beautiful cos loads have sad JGS for the role as the cute adorable puppy boy. I can't see it myself, as much as i loooove him and would love to see him real soon - i don't think it would suit.

The role is an odd one, someone like one of the boys from Shinee - that sort of look, i'm not suggesting we subject ourselves to a "idol attempt at acting" ordeal or anything.

Kimi Wa Petto has a special place in my heart as it was my first J-Dorama.
Did I mention I am absolutely furious that they are making a remake??!!!
Not so much on the fact of the remaking itself but just going by the casting of Kim Hyun Joong... I don't think they are taking this seriously enough.

It was a wonderful drama and it portrayed the gender prejudice that still exists for the women of Japan along with fun love stuff in a different way.
With the announcement of this remake, I have a bad feeling its going to be "poppified". As in bubble gum candy boys over flowers.

Shoot me if that ever happens...

I know remakes hardly ever do as well as the original simply because it isn't the original. I know I am biased in that sense. However if this drama doesn't produce some good writing and strong leads.. well, its best to leave it to the imagination.

@ 170 and 175 lilly,
I have to disagree, although I am amused by the intensity of emotions in this thread...MONTHS after BOF last aired :-) . Does say something about why BOF was such hit -- it hit a nerve.

Lee Min Ho showed that even in the face of sucky writing, even suckier story lines, and super sucky everything else, he could still get into character and do it justice, despite the extreme suckiness of the character he was playing.

My point is that under the worst of circumstances, LMH showed that he could at least act...

Jang GS -- I have seen enough of his work by now (including his very cute movies) to know that the boy (man?) can act. He is definitely talented and in a league of his own.

Lee Min Ho has not been in the industry as long as JGS, but what he has done so far does point to his having some natural talent.

Seriously, we should direct our anger at the writers and directors of BOF.

I think we are taking out too much of our anger on the poor actors.

1) Actors like JGS, MGY, ect... are at another level than "actors" like KHJ, LMH...
This is a fact because mainly as you said the formers have experience (they have acted different roles since they are in the industry) what the latter lack.
2) Alright you disagree with what I said and you tell me the script and the character's writting sucked but at the same time you say LMH showed talent, maybe. Yet the man acted a totally different character was not Domyoji (maybe it was himself, even perma was starting to disappear ). Gu Hye Sun characted writting sucked too (her acting either) but I can't help but admit the girl cried good even much better than LMH (he sucked at the airport scene or at epi 5 when he was about to knock the wall) and I can't remember a memorable funny acting of him...

I can see why he doesn't want to fade from acting. I mean Se7en's drama was a flop. BOF was a huge success and he received so many popularity awards for his role. I mean his ego isn't going to say.. you know what.. let's stop now. Even if his acting is only limited, he's not going to stop ..his pretty face and popularity is going to take him places.

Didn't I read somewhere that Su-Ae was the lead actress?

I disagree with you. Why blame the casting crew? I know they want hugely popular actors for certain role in a drama to boost that drama popularity. But like JAVABEANS said, KHJ should have realized after BBF, he's not cut out for it (like 7 and stick to his regular job). OR go to a intense training camp for acting. Seriously, no offense, He's one reason, I stop watching BBF after episode 2 or 3, can't even remember. I just want to have good old memory of that series and stick on re-watching the Taiwanese (season 1only) version and the best Japanese version of the drama. As for MOMO!!! there goes another good japanese adaptation ruined! I'll wait and see though, maybe KJH took all our comments to heart and did some intense training. So I'll keep an open mind and wait. After all he's new to acting but then again so is JUNG YONG HWA of "YB" but that boy can act !

# 184 lilly,

Isn't that a bit harsh? I mean, I'm not a huge BoF as well, but I admit that I was part of that fancraze and I'm glad that it's way over. I will have to agree with Nom_Kitteh here, and say that it is the writer and the director's fault why BoF turned out this way. Actually no, make it mostly the writer's fault. I still admire the crew though for working really hard, but it just so happened that the drama turned out into a mess.

JGS just happened to be on the spotlight first than LMH, as his dramas and movies were popular. Unlike with LMH, he has been doing some dramas before (2 leads I think and some were a side role) but he didn't have the luck to shine into stardom with those. BoF gave him the big break that he really needed, for I think he did very well as Gu Jun Pyo. And can we please not compare Gu Jun Pyo with Domyouji Tsukasa, as they are different entities? I love HanaDan, I'm a huge fan of this Japanese series, and I think that the Japanese adaptation really defined the manga characters. With BoF, this is a Korean production, so of course, they would deviate a bit, with the writing and the characters. Sadly, the writing was very horrible, for it did not capture the true essence of Hana Yori Dango. I think Min Ho was amazing for he totally personified Gu Jun Pyo. Like he owned that character, and he's the only one who can do it, same as there's no other Domyouji like MatsuJun.

Alright, let's say that LMH is no where near JGS's level. But I think with a bit of experience in the field he can definitely hone his skills. I saw that in BoF, and I just hope that you can see it in his future dramas.

With regards to KHJ, I have nothing to say. He didn't impress me at all in BoF. Sometimes I even think that Shin Woo of You're Beautiful should've been Yoon Ji Hoo. And sometimes I think that there should've been another actor to play the Korean version of Rui.

Haven't seen Kimi wa Petto, and I'm not planning to; although I did hear that Jun played his part really well. Knowing that some manga and drama adaptations are being made, I'm afraid that this might be a new trend in Kdrama. Adapting BoF was understandable; it's HanaDan. But adapting these mangas into a Kdrama, heh. I wonder if they'll do Hana Kimi next. I'm curious.

if Lee Dong Wook was younger he would just perfect for this role...but Kim Hyun Joong? I mean, he's handsome but we always had the same expression on his face during BOF...he never showed emotions...even when we was "happy" he looked sad/cold!

Kimi wa petto is also one of my favs, I don't think how am I going to support this project after watching Matsumoto Jun doing such a lovely role and obviously been force to compare...

I just can't picture KHJ been that cute and bubblish! I hope he get some acting lessons ASAP or the press and fans will kill him!

"And can we please not compare Gu Jun Pyo with Domyouji Tsukasa, as they are different entities?"

That's why I says "maybe he acted himself" (the weakest Domyoji)
Indeed like KHJ who ruined Rui (his acting was so fake that he became the most open and smily Rui). At the end I start feeling a little more sympathy for KHJ here. Indeed he does an as bad job (maybe worst) as LMH but he is the most bashed (I admit including by me)...

lilly,

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you said he acted as the weakest Domyouji. That, I will not disagree. I think as well that the character was very weak, very un-Domyouiji or un-Jun Pyo like, but I think it's not Lee Min Ho's fault for acting like that because he's just following what the script and the director says. In the first few episodes the writing was good; but on the next ones there were a lot of character inconsistencies, not just with Jun Pyo.

KHJ is the wrong man for the role. Kimi Wa Petto is one of my favorite mangas of all time. Momo is cute, SHORT, smart , and funny. KHJ should really choose projects where his Lack of Skill wont show. I really hope they at least choose a Tall actress to play Sumair, though where they would find one taller then KHJ I don't know.

p.s.
Someone like Jang Keun Suk would be much better. He's a bit tall, but , Who cares, since this boy can ACT.

In fact, I'm over my initial hilarity enough to see how unfair it is that *he* is getting this job, instead of a talented actor, of which there has to be many, right? What is Lee Min Ho doing ,exactly, eating choco pies and playing wii??
