Kim Hyun-joong cast in remake of Kimi wa petto
by javabeans
I say this without snarkiness (a quality I think is growing far too overrated these days anyway): One would have thought that idol singer Kim Hyun-joong‘s stiff, uncomfortable acting debut in Boys Before Flowers earlier this year would have convinced people to STOP casting him in high-profile projects, but alas ’tis not the case. He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet. The j-dorama aired in 2003 on TBS.
Like Boys Before Flowers, the Japanese original starred the popular idol-actor Matsumoto Jun (opposite Koyuki). The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man. She and the man, who is first taken in and affectionately called her “pet,” gradually fall in love. The female lead is still currently casting.
The contract has yet to be finalized, according to Kim’s management, but should be made official soon. The film will begin shooting as soon as the casting is complete, and aims for a release date next year.
(I really thought Kim Hyun-joong would go the way of Se7en, as in, he’d realize that he was sorely limited in the acting arena and focus on his music. Coupled with his seemingly indifferent attitude toward acting in the first place — he had to be persuaded to take the BBF role by management who were eager to heighten his name recognition — I figured he’d fade from acting, not be cast as the lead in another high-profile remake. Again, I mean this without sarcasm, but I sincerely hope he hies himself to some intensive acting training if he wants a career in the field.)

He's cute and funny in real life, but like the 100 comments before me,
HE CAN'T REALLY ACT.
That's rather sad, but I'll acknowledge that.
CAN HE PLS DO SOMETHING THAT HE'S MORE APT IN?!?

i like Kimi wa petto but i wasn't really crazy over MJ's acting. i like him personally and i thought he did a decent job but not great like some claimed. and as for KHJ remaking this character, we need to cut this boy some slack since we've only seen him as Jihoo. there are a lot of actors out there who acted in many dramas/films yet still failed to impress me with their acting ability.
when i watched KHJ in BOF, i cringed all the way to ending 'coz i love oguri shun's rui and to me, no one can play that character but shun. however, after watching WGM i was totally impressed with his real personality. i can somewhat see him doing this character. i thought i read somewhere when this news first came out that he'll be acting opposite Su-Ae. i hope she'll reconsider :)

Oh mannn. So conflicted when I saw this post! I love 10-episode jdramas (and was particularly charmed by the plot of Kimi wa Petto), but I'm not a kdrama addict for nothing and can't deny I'm looking fwd to a Korean remake.
KHJ is indeed beautiful to look at, and giving him the benefit of the doubt...he might be able to pull off quirky onscreen. The question (or should I say instead, hope?) is whether KHJ can pull off the depth behind the character. He seems like a hardworker, so who knows...maybe with a dynamic script and good directing, it'll be grrrreat! *fingers crossed*
Btw. Really interested in who the leading lady is gonna be--I hope the producers find someone tomboyishly sexy. I think that might be an interesting match opposite KHJ..doesn't he always say how his type is the "sexy lady"? Good chemistry between the 2 leads is a MUST for Kimi wa Petto to work, imo.
And of course, I can't help my current crazy crush for Jang Geun Suk go unmentioned here. Definitely do agree with others that he'd be an awesome choice for in this role because he already has the right mix of boyish charm, quirkiness, & emotional depth in his acting.

And @104, pleeeeeeease no!
Absolute Boyfriend deserves a better male lead (despite KHJ's picture-perfect pretty boy looks). Hayami Mokomichi totally owned the complexities of Tenjo Night.
And at that thought, all I can imagine is a BOF JiHoo's wooden acting in a robot role....and that's absolutely nightmarish to me!!!

I don't know, KHJ always seems so tired and like a dead fish to me. Something about his eyes. Maybe it is because he was so emotionless in BOF. I can't imagine him being quirky and energentic as a "pet".
That being said, we should not be too quick to judge.....give the guy a chance and see what he can come up with. Maybe he will do the part justice.....is it possible??
I will watch the series. I too think Honey Lee will be awesome as the female lead. She is beautiful & classy.

Lol my reaction was the same as many others: Nooooooooooooo! I like KHJ and all, but he's not a good actor.. and to be the main lead in a role I can't see him pulling off..just imagining him in the role igives me goose bumps.
Besides, I'm not sure if Kimi wa Petto would translate well to a Korean story. It might just turn out a bit awkward.

I like the idea of KHJ in Kimi wa Petto, three reasons
1) I think his real -life personality is closer to that of the 'pet' than to Ji Hoo in BoF. My theory is that he'll, if not nail, at least come off better on this one because in live shows (like We Got Married) he has a fun, quirky sense of humor, and so long as he keeps that for the show he really doesn't need to be able to act for this.
2) KHJ is, by reputation, I've never seen any examples, a good dancer right? I've a little dance training and I was disappointed in the scenes of Jun's supposed world-class modern work. I expected better from a professional band member (which these days means you should at least be able to dance with confidence plus show some mix of fluidity and posture right?)
3)Did I really have to mention I'm quite partial to his _unbelievable_ good looks? :) (I'm a YB addict, but I have to admit, for sheer looks, KHJ pretty much leaves the YB cast in the dust... ouch! Don't hit me! I really do love JGS more! Just being honest... )
Though I want a _very_ good actress in the lead role, for three reasons
1) I think it's a tough role to pull through and to be honest the original KWP i thought didn't have a lead actress who could do that
2) A good actress can be the anchor of a good performance and inspire even usually mediocre actors to do better by example/chemistry generation/maybe straight up acting advice (my favorite example of this is from the HK-China movie "Comrades- Almost a Love Story", before that I thought Leon Lai was just a pretty face, but when you put in on one screen with Maggie Cheung, suddenly even he seemed like a Cannes-level actor... well... almost! :) )
3) I like the role of the lead girl here- it sounds like cave-man talk to an American audience, but the choice of a man who is simply and entirely just devoted to you and not accomplished in the traditional money-earning ways, shorter than you and who comes into your life as a play thing, is a brave decision still in Asia.
Thank you again JB for all the news- I'm one of the masses of grateful illiterates who depends on generous people like you to get my K-drama hits! ;)

My initial reaction O.O NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
WTH casted him on this role? If it's the Group8 ppl then that's understandable since that company really DOES NOT know quality!!!
What is up with Koreans adapting Japanese mangas? Why won't they instead make a live action for manhwas that hasn't been done yet. Let's see there are:
Hot Blooded Woman
Can't Lose You
You're So Cool
Chocolat
Bring It On
The Bride of the Water God (fantasy genre they can totally pull this off like The Legend)
Snow Drop
They Too Love
Hush
Bird Kiss
Angel Diary
Model
Masca
Replay
... must I keep listing?
So why are they remaking Kimi wa Petto? Matsumoto Jun owned that role (he was so darn cute and lovable in it). Didn't the Man Who Can't Get Married do poorly because of the Japanese humor aspect of it. Why can't they see that this will amount to the same thing too or maybe poorer since they're casting Kim Hyun-joong (man is indeed beautiful, but for a lead ACTING role ... he has none!)

I was never a fan of him to begin with, and his acting in BOF totally put me off. He is quite pretty to look at though, but I often find that when ever i look at him on screen his nose seems to draw my attention, which can be annoying LOL.

I don't see it, nearly every other Korean actor is better looking than this guy so I don't see the whole "he so good looking" things. Anyway this is gonan be a disaster, the drama was edgy and very different, Koreans tend to do overly violent or cheesy and to get the girls in I bet it won't be very daring. Can he act like MatsuJun did? I highly doubt it.

All I can say is NOOOOOO!!! I mean jis acting in BOF was painful to watch, why not give Momo's part to a upcoming actor or someone better.
@goldliIys, I wonder that myseld sometimes(not that I read any mahwa I prefer manga) but maybe because the japanese comics are far better known or the mangaka is so famous or that the jdorama or movie version was so huge that they hope to mimic the success( a la HYD and Meteor Shower)
I though So Ae was already cast as Koyuki's character ?

Not that I think that he would fit the role but I think that I saw improvement in his acting during the entire run of the BOF storyline... I forgive him since it was his first acting job and Jihoo-sunbae part was really quite passive even in the manga version.. (it was just Shun Oguri of the Japanese BOF was so good in his role as Rui that I think he became a basis for the role)..
On the otherhand, I think that MatsuJun's character in Kimi wa Petto is so quirky (and bubbly and I admit that he did such an amazing job in that drama) that I have no idea how KHJ is gonna pull it off... whenever he had to do cutesy things even just a little, he would cringe and openly admit that he doesn't like doing those sort of things... so maybe the part must be given to a more suitable actor who can do cute and quirky.. Actors that come to mind are Heechul, Hongki, GeunSuk (as long as he's partnered with PSH!!!!), Jaejoong (despite the controversy he's facing at the moment, he can do cute and quirky!).. Hell, I even think Hyung Joon would be able to pull it off better than Hyun Joong!

are they really only thinking about ratings nowadays. I am pretty sure the rating will be high for this remake only with KHJ fans but NOOO WAY!!! how could they just cast him for replacing Matsumoto Jun. Jun has this charismatic acting that KHJ will never have even with few months of hard working!
He destroyed the character of hanazawa rui and I was crying on BOF now he will make me have a heartattack with this remake
CROSS MY FINGERS that he will take some serious lesson of acting (work hard dear!!!)

Maybe he wasn't really immersed in the character he was playing in BOF, that's why he was very stiff as Ji Hoo. But I saw him in WGM and he was very funny and spontaneous so if his character in this new project is quirky, maybe there's hope.
This makes me curious so I'm going to give it a try although I'm not a big fan of KHJ.

#goldlilys: I agree with you that a lot of mangwhas have not been turned into drama or movie. Having said that, from your list, the one which is truly worth making into a drama is bride of the water god. Everything about that story is so breathtaking, original and reflect Korean folklore.
Kiwi Wa petto is such an unique manga. The same goes for Old Boy, which has been brilliantly transformed to a movie by a Korean director. But that's another story altogether!

woah woah woah woah!!! Hold the phone.
WTF are they doing to my Kimi wa Petto??!!?? And I'm not even talking about casting KHJ (bad idea). I'm really curious to see more of a plot synopsis for this movie, because aside from a successful working woman living with a younger man, I don't see many remaining similarities to the manga I hold so close to my heart.
Sumire was written not simply as a successful woman, but an "Elite", having graduated from Toudai AND Harvard. She worked in the International News department of a major newspaper until her reassignment, and was also model-gorgeous, taller than about 75% of the men around her, with a distaste for the fake cutesy-ness rampant in Japanese females of the day and a love for professional wrestling. Sumire Iwaya was everything a Japanese woman should not be, and she was successful at it, which made her that much more of a character to be ridiculed/envied by her co-workers and others. On top of all this she was still rife with her insecurities and flaws. From the sound of this synopsis (for the K-movie) they are taking the character out of the male-dominated news industry and placing her into the safe and fluffy world of a fashion magazine (*gasp* not that!! how many fashion mag scripts have been thrown around this year?). The only way I see them doing justice to the character with this premise is if she starts as a reporter for a major global news magazine and then gets reassigned to the fashion one. They had better find an amazing actress to fill this role, and one who's taller than the 180 cm listed on KHJ's D-wiki profile.
*sighs* and we won't even start on KHJ being Momo... it just hurts my head too much to even fathom it....
ugh.

I LOVE Kim Hyun Joong. I AM his fan! I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love him. I Do! I REALLY LOVE HIM!
BUT... When I read this article, the first thing that came to my mind was: 'REALLY? Oh, no!'.
I wish he would focus on his music career because acting is really not his thing. He improved his acting while 'Boys Over Flowers' was airing, but I still think the drama would have been better if other actor played his role and other actress played Geum Jandi role.
I think this is probably his management forcing him to accept this role. Because he said many times, that he never had ambition to be actor. And I don't think that he enjoys acting that much either.
Besides that, as much as I don't like Matsumoto Jun, he's experienced in acting and has proven many times that he's capable of acting. So Kim Hyun Joong will have a hard time trying because he probably won't be able to top Jun's acting in that drama.
I sound like I am Hyun Joong's anti, right? I AM NOT!
I'm his fan and because I love Hyun Joong so much, I wish he would stop embarassing himself by trying acting again.

L.E.A.D.!.?
@125: Being a fan of Hyunjoong, I know that he himself is a fun, lively guy who can easily make others laugh. Sad to say, his acting is bland. Not to mention Rui is a very "simple" character, yet Hyunjoong still looked like a dead fish.
It's not about the "character" or role, it's the fact that Hyunjoong cannot emote feelings/emotions that well.
As far as giving him a chance, I don't think people would care if he got a role if it was a side character. Until his acting improves, couldn't he just get a side role or second lead? But goodness gracious, the LEAD!? THAT'S whats so bothering, it's not even funny.
---
Now. Kimi wa Petto. I wholeheartedly agree with amhracas.
*sigh*
On the topic of mangas turned into dramas/movie, Korea has a real advantage with the serious dramatic plots over comedic ones (although there were great comedic dramas made, the vast majority ended up during the second half of the serious in the usual dramatic... stuff.)
In fact, there's so much drama about tragic deaths and etc, I couldn't help but laugh when I was reading a manhua (Chinese comic/manga) when I read this page:
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/the_one/v04/c024/5.html
But if it's a Japanese manga that should turn into a K-drama, I only pray for Nana. The story plot is, as usual from Yazawa, amazing (it's the slice-of-life type, not the plain cute/comedic stuff).

@jacqueline: Agreed with your comments.
KHJ acted cute in "We got married". But I think he is quite "cool" in real life. He did not thank his partner in "We got married" when they received the best couple award...... But Hwang Bo said thank you to KHJ's fans lah. Sigh....
His acting in BOF is a disaster - "without any facial expression" or "with only one expression - day-dreaming". He was like this when he acted in a short drama in a variety show a few years ago.... So no high hope on KHJ on acting. Maybe he is the lady verion of Kim Tae Hee...Nice to look at but is quite intolerable (not just boring) to watch them in movie/drama.
But KHJ must be really popular in Korea. The director of BOF has said many times in one interview that he made the right decision to select KHJ (not even Lee Min Ho) since he brought the high ratings to this drama.
Box office numbers/ratings may be a more important factor to consider when the director selects the cast....Sigh again.............
I have not watched the Japanese version since I do not like the male and female leads. So very likely to pass this k-movie lah...

In that case, I won't be watching it anyway.
Still, it makes me giggle to think of him trying to act like Jeremy. It's harsh, and maybe we're all completely off base. But, I'm basing this also on his performance for BOF, which was abysmal. I can't think of a role less appropriate for him. Which, invariably, makes it hilarious.

Hopefully, this won't be confirmed because I'm a little skeptical about KHJ being able to pull off the Momo role. It would definitely be too difficult for him to live up to MatsuJun's acting. This drama however, would probably do well regardless because of KHJ acting in BBF and the fact that this is a highly popular manga.

I think we should give KHJ another chance on this one. I get the impression that his character in BOF was quite a hard one to play (reserved but caring). I'm saying this just from looking at other dramas where the second lead's acting falls down because of a too reserved character, recent examples being My Fair Lady and You're Beautiful (not saying that those dramas are on the same level or anything, but they have the same breed of second lead)
The writing in BOF was shocking, and I'm really hoping that the writing in Kimi wa Petto will be different (I loved the manga/drama as well) enough to bring out KHJ's talent as an actor.
I could just be saying this coz I love Kimi wa Petto, but I do think the 'Rui' role was difficult for him to pull off in his first acting stint, he's just not as talented as Oguri Shun.

I grant you that he did not show any considerable acting talent in BBF, though he was given the most interesting material, character wise, to explore (the reason I kept watching him and grew attached to his face and demeanour, the way one is attached to guilty pleasures). However, subjective pathologies of taste and desire aside, I think he does have an alluring screen presence, there's something of a solitary handsomeness about him, which raises him slightly above the 'cute face' label, or better still, it turns anti-cute in its very sweetness. Now if he trains and educates that formless something which he, in my view, possesses, then it may blossom into something really interesting (a profound sheen, a teasing suaveness?). In this respect he may be good for the part (if he does the work as few have already pointed out ) as I don't think the part calls for a 'cute' guy, but for somebody full of the bewilderment of youth, of ravenous experimentation, and of the terrors arising from youth's utter conviction of its own indestructibility. And he (the actor) must deliver all these with a light hand, the hand of a painter adding a detail on a canvas.

OMG! Love Kimi wa petto! I love, love, koyuki and jun matsumoto! i had so much fun watching this series. Made me laugh and cry....the ending wasnt great...kind of hanging...but i love their chem!
Kim hyun joong as JM's character? mmm.... i like kim the best among the BOF (coz he is the cutest! haha! i know, very superficial..still...), but am not really sure if he can do a good job or top JM's crazy acting in KWP.....but I will give this a peek and see...maybe this will turn out to be a good series....
am curious who the lead female will be......

"The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man."
Oh-No!!! A fashion Magazine AGAIN???!!!!! Bleh!!! *makes a face*
Like Amrahncas @125, I like the fact that the lead female was working in a newspaper company, an office dominated by male employees. It adds to the lead female's strong character(a contrast to her sweetness with the lead male character).... i mean, being an editor also gives a high, elite, strong character but, editor of a fashion mag is sooo cliche, dated, ..... bleh!!!
Reminds me of the "....with EDGE..." lol!

Ok... I know he didn't do well on his 1st drama but let's give this guy a break... Let's give him a chance to show a different side of a character other than the stiff Jihoo that he potrayed. He might not do as well as the original but he might also not be as bad as most would think and surprise us. If he bombs this drama, then hopefully it will be his wake-up call and quit acting all together. Let's not bash the guy before the drama even starts...
And Javabeans, I'm really disappointed about this particular blog. I know you and everyone are entitled to their opinion. But I thought you would be bigger than this. You are believed to be a very credible blogger and lots look for your objectivity. You have a very big influence in netizens out there and to stir up something like this is beneath you. I could just imagine the many negative comments he probably is receiving in his personal homepage.
I'm not a big fan of his but I can't help feel sorry for the guy. He's just probably someone who's not letting any opportunities slip by him. So give him a chance to prove himself.
