Cha In-pyo heads new KBS drama

Actors Cha In-pyo (Crossing, Hanbando) and Han Go-eun (Can Anyone Love, Capital Scandal) have just been cast to head a new KBS1 daeha drama, or period project.

The series is called Great Family [명가] and will premiere on January 2. The story deals with one wealthy family that experiments with the concept of noblesse oblige, which is the idea that people born to lofty positions have a social responsibility to exercise generosity toward those in less advantageous circumstances. Cha In-pyo plays the lead character, who puts the concept into practice, while Han Go-eun provides his moral support.

There is some talk that there is dissatisfaction in political circles because part of the drama describes the founding of Yeungnam University, which was established by former President Park Chung-hee, who served as president in the 1960s and ’70s. However, a KBS represented refuted these as “groundless conjecture.” The source explained, “The drama only mentions that a family in Gyeongju donates money to found a university, but the process is not described in detail.”

Currently, the script is being written. This will be Cha’s first drama in three years, since acting in MBC’s White Tower, while Han was in the recent SBS weekend series Can Anyone Love.

whoaa, he's my aunt's favorite actor since Fireworks!

I like him too. And he seems a very nice and caring person - together with his wife, they're active in social activities, right?

The plot is still kinda confusing me. But I'll look forward more information about this drama..if it's interesting, I think I'm gonna watch it.
Cha and Han are good actors!

I'm not familiar with the actor, but I loved Han Go-Eun in Capital Scandal! Sounds like the drama has some issues already, so I wish them the best!

yeah! its interesting because these last years he's been working to help those
less fortunate and has created the compassion band with a bunch of other stars
they just released their first album and here's the music video - everyone donated
their time and all proceeds go to help the compassion international korea cause

it's awesome: here's the link to the video - credits tomy479m

i'm not familiar with korean politics but it seems as if there is unrest going on within South Korea at the moment, and i don't even mean with North Korea but political instability within South Korea itself. i haven't really researched anything but just weird things happening with the government like -perhaps- the firing of kim jaedong from star golden bell for being liberal (i know it's not certain and there are just rumors stirring but still)

maybe it's a bit irrelevant to this blog but it just reminded me of it when i saw the third section :P

on another note.. YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW AND THURSDAYYY .>)

i look forward to any series set in recent korean history. My KBS World station in Seattle is re-showing in the afternoon Golden Apple (황금사과 2005-06) - how great to see it again. A must see for all you Kim Ji Hoon and Ji Hyun Woo fans but beyond that ^^, it was a great family and political drama, set first in the 60s and then jumping to the 70s.

@ambs,

"like -perhaps- the firing of kim jaedong from star golden bell for being liberal (i know it’s not certain and there are just rumors stirring but still)"

whoa! thanks for raising this issue. if anyone knows more about this, please do tell! i can't read the korean papers in korean. =.= but i sure did wonder when i saw his tearful goodbye recently.

@4 Her face is kinda man-ish. She looks like those lady boys...honestly I'm not drinking hater-ade but she's not super pretty like other korean actresses i've seen.

I love these two actors so much.
I dont care if she looks "manish", she is soo charismatic in her acting, I absolutely loved her in Capital Scandal. She is so sultry and sexy, just love her.
And Cha inpyo is a great humanitarian-him and his wife both. I admire his love for the world and gosh. what great actors!

@ambs, @paula253:

I've also heard reports that Yoon Do Hyun was fired from Yoon Do Hyun's Love Letter because he's liberal. He and Kim Jae Dong were very vocal in their views (and were very much in the spotlight with their fairly recent participation in the funerals of former liberal presidents Roh Moo Hyun and Kim Dae Jung), and you can see the result. Furthermore, the new president of KBS is said to have gotten the job because he's buddies with Lee Myung Bak. With an uber-conservative person connected to 2MB leading KBS, it's no surprise that Yoon Do Hyun and Kim Jae Dong lost their jobs.

Here's what MisterX had to say about this drama:

"Rumors are that Choi Si-Jung from the government (clan member, obviously), shoved this down KBS’ throats, and with a pro-2MB management like they have now, they were all too happy to oblige. 16 Eps, and from what I hear, nobody in the Drama team wants any of this, so they might try to make a mess on purpose."

Honestly, any drama that gets even close to depicting favourably a dictator like Park Chung Hee or some current rat's family from the Blue House is one that I have no wish to see. I won't be tuning in.

@ Dahee,

thanks so much for the insight. siiiigh. ok, never mind what i said earlier. ^^ i'm with you. I was aware of why YDH was fired from Love Letter. i guess it just took a little longer for Kim Jae Dong to get the axe too, since he is such a popular host. it really bites to see KBS becoming even more firmly in the clutches of the 2MB govt.

Woah, I never knew any of this about the rumors surrounding YDH and KJD. I never imaged the reasons to be government related.. I thought they just left on their own! That is so crazy...

Anyway- love the cast so far! Althought Cha ImPyo is not the best actor (good=when he is just lookin' pretty on screen; bad=when he starts talking.. lol no offense), but I'm still a huge fan of him (and his wife!). Haha, I think the last thing I watched him in was WangCho.. (woah SO long ago O_O;; Song YoonAh!! <333)
Also, I love the way Han GoEun talks.. it's really charismatic, in my opinion..
It'll be interesting to see how the drama turns out with the current "controversies" surrounding it.

@ #9 Dahee: I heard the same thing while I was surfing around different drama forums.. that KBS is making a drama about this Choi family based in Gyeongju and directors are being forced to do it. I instantly realized this drama must be it after seeing the title "Great Family." Yet another reason not to watch this drama in addition to Cha Inpyo being in it. I like Cha Inpyo as a person but I can't stand his acting (he's alright in roles that do not require acting out deep emotions, but as a lead, no thanks.)

I guess other people (who choose to remain Anonymous) think that Han Go-eun looks like a man but I think she's beautiful. She has that sexy-badass-chick look going on. The only work of hers that I've seen is a few episodes of the last drama she was in but I was disappointed with her role, and the drama in general, because it was way too corny for my taste. The first time I saw Han Go-eun was at that awards show a year or so ago where she was wearing that black dress and, if I remember correctly, most people thought she looked like a vampire or something like that. I thought she looked hot though. I should really check out some of her past dramas and movies to see if she's done it already but, just from her looks, I think she's perfect for more mature, darker, thought provoking roles. I'll give this new drama a chance just because Han Go-eun is going to be in it but as a whole I think she should stay away from lighter, comedic roles and go for more mature, serious roles.

At last another drama for Han Ga Eun. I was so impressed with her performance & beauty in "Love & Ambition". Again in "Capital Scandal". Am so looking forward to watch her again in this new drama & also to get to know the lead actor.

@ 13 Jaemin: Capital Scandal is a must-watch, on SO many fronts, not least Han Go Eun. BADASS and strong and fabulous and still vulnerable re her OTP. I love Capital Scandal so much. And KANG JI HWAN. <3 *cough*Javabeans*cough*

As far as Cha In Pyo goes I've heard his name but have no real idea who he is; at least pretty's a start, LOL. Political controversy is a turnoff and the plot doesn't sound especially grabbing so so far Han Go Eun is the only real draw for me. IA with glitzyglam, her voice and way of talking is beyond amazing.. how luckyyy. I don't think she looks mannish, I think she looks strong and kickass, as opposed to tiny and cute like your average kdrama lead female. I hope her role is more substantial than 'moral support' for the main lead. Too early to tell yet I guess.

i totally agree! I'm not sure what the "corny drama" was that you saw only a few episodes of, but if you like her, you must see Capital Scandal (경성스캔들, KBS, 2007). She just blows me away in that. happy watching!
