Tamra will get a full director’s cut DVD
by javabeans
Good news for fans of MBC’s Tamra the Island, which was shortened by four episodes in its original broadcast run and just wrapped this past weekend: The drama will be getting a director’s cut DVD set, which will contain all 20 of its originally planned episodes (rather than the edited-down 16-episode version).
Fans had rallied in defense of the series and launched a protest of MBC’s decision to cut the drama, circulating petitions, picketing in protest, and taking out multiple newspaper ads. They were unsuccessful in getting MBC to change its mind, but their extensive efforts (which are unprecedented in scope) did touch the hearts of the production team; fans even opened a bank account devoted to collecting funds on behalf of a 20-episode DVD set and received 1,100 responses within the first two days.
One member from the production team said, “It’s a difficult situation, but we were touched at the viewers’ petitions, so we decided to make a director’s cut DVD that restores the parts that had been cut out.”
In addition, Tamra the Island begins its Japanese broadcast on October 26.

I really enjoyed Tamra and was sad to see it shortened to 16 episodes. Is there any idea on when the 20 episode DVD set will be out?

YAY! I had a suspicion they'd do this, but it makes me happy to hear anyway.
This was such a great show, but you could really tell in the last 4 episodes that things had been cut out. I can't wait to see how it was originally supposed to be. :D

Tamra was SOO good!!!
I am anticipating the release of the director's cut DVD. Having seen the first broadcast, I still have a lot of questions about parts were edited out. I also heard of good Park Kyu/ BeoJin scenes that weren't included! I want to see it all!!

I can understand why people might be turned off by the drama thinking it's slapstick humor considering the awkward beginning with that horrible English scene. It turned out to be alot more than anticipated with beautiful scenery, suspense, action, and romance. Actor Im Ju Hwan really did a wonderful job as Park Kyu. Without him, Tamra Island would be bland. I look forward to seeing more of his acting. The ending over this past weekend was fantastic. I only wish there were more Park Kyu and Beo Jin moments. Sadly, it would appear that SPI has stopped subbing this drama. A full director's cut of Tamra Island is definitely good news. This DVD set will certainly be on my Christmas list.

Love Tamra and I'm all over this baby. I'm sure as time goes by it'll garner more fans. If someone who watches this for 3 eps and still doesn't like it, it's not for them. I haven't heard anyone who dislike it after 3 eps so far.

Good Luck to the actors on their next projects.

YYAYYYYY!!
Wonderful news for us Tamra Islanders!
This is a shout-out to those who dismissed the drama at its first look, or upon watching the first few episodes. Such an endearing drama with so much heart and fun. Altho it did get a lil bit sappy and melo towards the end, they still managed to keep the fun and intensity required in certain scenes, and made me laugh and cry at the same time. And if cheesy/slapstick-ish storylines are not your cup of tea, please give it a try for one actor - Im Ju Hwan. I think he showcased one of his best acting chops in this drama (well I've seen some of his other stuff and they weren't exactly great or near good), displaying what we call "perfection" of a noble yangban . His sensitivity, grace and calmness is just next to none, one that I've never seen before in any sageuk. A bit too ideal, but WTH, he's just perfect!!
Can't wait until the DVD comes out!

@ 15 all4movies - Me too. I finally watched the last episode yesterday. I am content with it that I want to re-watch it all over again. It may have not quenched my thirst for more BeoJin and Park Kyu but I love them both!!
@ 18 Masaya - To all new viewers, Masaya's right. You have to give it after Ep 3 to get hooked. Some of the slapstick was not for me.
@ 22 asianromance - You are one tough cookie. I couldn't handle not watching the rest of the series.
lastly @ 24 ripgal - I was happy to see that Yan finally warmed up to BeoJin. What you said about Im Ju Hwan was very well put. He had played minor roles in the past: Snow Queen, Frozen Flower (BTW - he's a HOT looking soldier), and Boys Over Flowers {I don't want to mention his older stuff since they were insignificant roles.} This role helped him show different facets of his acting ability. I was tore up when his heart was broken, giddy when he smiled, angry when he was snooty, and resentful when he felt betrayed.
I will definitely be re-watching the 16 episodes now AND watching the 20 episodes later.

Thanks to the quick hack-n-slash job they did on this wonderful show, the ending seemed overly simplistic and extremely rushed...and that's being kind. To say the least, not many people were satisfied with it.
Personally, I'm just really happy that--since the manhwa story is ongoing--Beojin, Park Gyu, William, and Yan's adventures will continue for the foreseeable future. And, who knows? Maybe someday a better station than MBC will buy the rights to a full-fledged sequel and do things properly.

I really looovee this drama!!! Although by MBC butchering it, the production teams manage to deliver the story quite well...Bravo to them!!! But still, i can`t get enough of this wonderful drama, i`m sooo happy they released the uncut version...I`ll be waiting for the broadcast in Japan and DVD...
@26 John
I really hope they`ll making the sequel..there`re many aspects of the story that are interesting to explore!! And i hope if it does happen, they keep all the people who involved in first part, because their work is superb!!
@24 ripgal

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!! That is really awesome news! I think Tamra is one of the best Korean dramas of the year so far, even though it got compressed into 16 episodes.
It's one of those dramas which get better and better as they go along. I only started watching it out of curiousity...the first ep with the cheesy English almost made me give up...but once it hit its stride from Ep 3 onwards, I was pleasantly surprised and totally hooked.
Im Joo Hwan was definitely the shining star that made Tamra extra special...I watched Frozen Flower and BOF and I don't even remember seeing him! But in Tamra, he shows what a fantastic actor he is... he has such a range and never once did he overact. He is so subtle yet his eyes have the ability to convey so much emotion. And I have never seen an actor look so good in costume...no matter what he was wearing.
I think Tamra shows how fantastic a drama can be when it's well thought out, and when filming isn't rushed and the actors have time to really get into character. There was just so much sincerity and so much attention to detail...everything was there for a reason. The emotional scenes were heartwrenchingly beautiful...the funny scenes had me in hysterics and the scenery was just magnificent.
it was just such a shame as it could have been sooooo much better if the different story arcs had time to play themselves out.
I'm definitely getting this DVD... it's going to be a classic in my book. Hope it comes out soon! Totally can't wait... in the meantime I'll be rewatching it again and again....:)

@ 29 Hana and all fellow Islanders..
You're so spot on about Im Ju Hwan's subtle portrayal of Park Kyu. His gestures and mannerisms were really well played out, a portrayal filled with so much heart and conviction.
Love it especially when he cries... tears just need to fill his eyes, and I will start crying with him. If you compare him to Seo Woo (whom I think is a budding actress as well. Magnificent crying!), you can see the difference. When Im Ju Hwan cries, with or without tears, your heart will ache for him. The flicker of sadness in his eyes, you will not miss it whenever he starts to go all sad/desolate... But for Seo Woo, when she cries, she immediately cries a river. Tears just roll down her face non-stop! She straight away becomes an emotional wreck. That's why I prefer it more when Im Joo Hwan cries... because everything he does is so self-controlled and contained. He doesn't explode when he cries but yet he evokes the same amount of impact Seo Woo's capable of bringing when she breaks down into a river. The difference is there...
Like some, I really hope Im Joo Hwan can be recognised for his acting in Tamra in the MBC Awards (tho I'm really doubtful of the system <_<). Seo Woo also deserves credit because without her bubbly and cheery portrayal of Beo Jin, what would become of the drama?

Thank you for the good news!
Now, I fervently hope that there will be an English-subbed 20 episode DVD set, which I will buy as soon as it is released.
The purchase of which will increase my collection 100% ... since I only own one other DVD set (Dae Jang Geum). hee, hee.
In the mean time, I'm re-watching it from the beginning. I especially like their time on Tamra Island versus their time in Han Yang.

have just finished watching all 16 tamra/tamna island eps and the ending was sooooo cute!!! thrilling, exciting, quietly satisfying (can't wait for the full 20 ep dvd box set)
i'm really glad it ended in the light, fluffy tone it started out with as it got pretty serious for a minute there *phew* love the characters, love the subtext, mysterious story arcs that never quite resolved themselves (seo rin's back story? yan: who knew he could make heart shapes with his hands?!) so yeh, am loving tamra right now and can't wait to re-watch eppys :)

Me too...... I really really enjoyed this drama. I have rewatched episode 16 3xs already... As everyone has mentioned: Im Joo Hwan's portrayal was just amazing. His character had so many layers and I loved watching his feelings develop for Beo Jin.
The setting of the drama was also just beautiful + the music. I wish I watched this when I visited Jeju. I would have so ran around the island more and imagined all the glory it was in the past.
I also wished you (javabeans) capped it. I would have really enjoyed your take on it.
anyhows, Tamna Island was freaking awesome with a capital A.
