Movie in the works for Queen Seon-deok

Ooh, interesting. Producers have announced that Queen Seon-deok, MBC’s successful historical epic series, will be re-edited down to movie format, just in time for the approaching holiday weekend.

This version will not be a mere rehash of highlights and clips, but will actually tell a complete story. Its focus will not be on the drama’s current state of events, where the battle for the throne is heating up between Mi-shil (Go Hyun-jung) and Princess Deok-man (Lee Yo-won), but on the first half with the characters’ childhoods and development.

MBC’s 2007 fusion historical series Legend is similarly planning a re-edited movie version — but unlike Legend, the Seon-deok movie isn’t getting a cinema release. Instead, it will broadcast as a TV movie as part of the station’s special Chuseok programming. (Chuseok is one of the biggest holidays in Korea and falls this year on the first weekend of October.)

The TV movie will air in two 90-minute parts, and its specific timeslot has not yet been fixed.

Aside from satisfying viewer demands, this is probably a really shrewd move on MBC’s part to play up its big cash cow, produce two likely-to-be-watched Chuseok broadcasts, and ensnare additional viewers who haven’t been watching and would like a quick recap on the story so far — just in time to start watching as the drama heads into its second half. Hey, I’ll probably be watching.

I watched this drama when the child actors were acting.. as soon as the adult actors came into the screen, the drama lost its appeal to me as their acting seemed subpar compared to the acting of the kids...
This was especially true for the main female lead.. the child actress was phenomenal for that!
So long rabbling short, I think I would be interested to watch this TV movie... =)

@Icarusfalls

completely agree i never seen Queen Seon-deok, or the child actors. I did see the LEAD in Bad Love she she improve fast. Aside from that they should release Queen Seon-deok, theatres show a more darker realer version of it.

@2 Icarusfalls
i have to agree with you about the acting.. but i couldn't stop..
i remember for me legend had the same point..i liked the child actress more.. but at least the adult was more confessing than Dokman
the child actors and actresses most of the times are amazing

@4 more
for me the lead was the best actress in my list after i saw sergun bong dal hae
she was also good in fashion 70s (didn't watch Bad Love)
maybe bcz both of the drama her character was weak and sick and she did well
but in QSD she is totally the opposed.
she should have at least gained weight for the role.. i was worried she will fell sick whenever she is running haha..
oh well i'm hopping she will do better as being a princess than nangdo

btw i'm loving the drama..
and i'm sure the movie will miss a lot of details.. so i recommend to watch the drama, but i would also like to see how the movie will go on :).

"I can’t wait for the movie “Bidam: The Legend, The Blade, The Chicken Leg!!!'"

Now that would be a movie I would watch. If it was about Bidam's childhood, count me in. I love, LOVE Bidam as well. QSD wouldn't be the same w/o him, and imho wouldn't be as good....I almost don't want QSD to end because of him...almost ;) Speaking of which can anybody recommend anything else Kim Nam-gil has done that is worth checking out?

"Speaking of which can anybody recommend anything else Kim Nam-gil has done that is worth checking out?"

His movie "No Regret" is his best work, where he and another man enter into a difficult love affair. That movie, the first mainstream queer movie, gave him a lot of visibility into Japan.

There's also "Goodbye Solo." He went by Lee Han at the time)

And I liked him in When Spring Comes.

Kim Nam-gil is such a sweetheart. Remember that boy who always cheered you up with his silliness? That's Kim Nam-gil. Also, apparently Bidam was mostly his creation. Apparently, he's a huge fan of manga and based Bidam on Mushashi from Vagaband. Now, if you're a fan of Vagabond, it's SO OBVIOUS what with the eyebrows and general untamed beast/hobo sexiness.

DAMN!! I wanna be your lover Bidam lol!!! :D

MBC's so sneaky! I probably won't watch Queen Seon-deok, but I'm curious enough to watch a 3 hr shortened-version of it.

I'll have to agree - it was a noticeable change of personality when they went from the young Deokman to the older BUT the story is so engaging and intense that it pans out. For those who stopped watching when they did the switch to the older Deokman: It gets even better.

Love the YUSHIN character because he is so steadfast and stands for integrity and goodness. Go YuShin !!!!!!!!!

(That part where Bidam tells the other fighters to watch their 'butts' was hilarious. He said he always goes for the butts when attacking. --Although the actor is funny, the historical Bidam was actually quite ruthless and deceiving. He led a revolt against Queen SeonDuk which historians believe may have caused her early death at 37. I cannot like someone so evil, even if he is funny.)

Ughhh Raina, you know you kinda spoiled the end of QSD. :(

(But yeah, the show is probably going to end with the Bidam Rebellion, with Bidam and Yushin facing off. So, yeah, the show is going to have a very sad ending. Still hoping for the show ending with Bidam opening up the first Kyochon Korean Fried Chicken outlet.)

"I’ll have to agree – it was a noticeable change of personality when they went from the young Deokman to the older BUT the story is so engaging and intense that it pans out."

I think my family is split on this issue. Brother's wife likes Lee Yo Won in this role, but she feels that the adult Doekman should be spunkier like her child version. Brother and mom feel LYW is terrific as adult Deokman. And I think the difference is where you sit with Deokman's past. If you see her as kind of a fearless Jang Geum-type, then you miss the child version. If you see her as a abandoned victim, then you might side with the adult version.

No, no spoiler intended or present there in my last post -- I was just referring to the historical facts. Remember, the drama is LOOSELY based on history. I actually have no idea how it'll end.

@Raina,

I think there was a press clip about QSD eventually doing Bidam's rebellion. I'm assuming the show doesn't end with Deokman raising a flag pole on the Kingdom of Gorguyeo. That would be just . . . wrong. :D

(But it would be pretty sweet if Baekche Princess Sung Yuri and Seon Deok fought to the death or something. Ahhh, 1000 Years of Love damaged my mind!! :D )

I have no illusions about Bidam avoiding the inevitable Anakin turn. I'm enjoying it now before he breaks my heart. :(

I've been getting my weekly fix of QSD since the very beginning. I have to say that I'm not a big fan of Uhm Tae Woong in this role. I find that I like him better in modern roles, like in The Devil and Resurrection. It's not that he's doing a bad job or anything, it's just that he doesn't interest me like the other characters do. First it was Alcheon (we've practically started a harem), but even he is starting to pale in comparison to the versatility that Bidam brings - the humor, the seriousness, the deviousness, the wildness and the depth of his character - I love it all.

As for Deokman, I ADORED the younger version and I was mostly ok with the older one (even though she doesn't carry the same kind of oomph, of righteousness, of rebellion...she's missing that spark for me). Lately though, she's been kind of blending into the background while the other characters take over. I realize she's not really the focus in the latter episodes, but what screen time she does get, I end up forgetting about her right after. She's getting kinda 'meh-y'.

So, anyway, movie or not I'm willing to watch anything QSD related. ^_^

Long live Bidam and his chickens! (well...no wait...they wouldn't be living long around him)

@Akiness,

"First it was Alcheon (we’ve practically started a harem),"

I love Lee Seung-hyo so effortlessly gives Alcheon regal nobility. Alcheon isn't much of a character on paper, but LSH brings presence and conviction to his cahracter. You could really feel his bond with Yushin as well as the deph of his principles. And the fact that he could pass for Lee Jung Ki's older brother doesn't hurt either.

Lee Seung-hyo's gotten a lot of notice for Alcheon (and I think the character Alcheon was expanded due to his popularity), so we're definitely going to see him in future shows.

"I have to say that I’m not a big fan of Uhm Tae Woong in this role"

UTW delivers when Yushin gets emotional, but other than that, Yushin's kinda dull. He's a big, dumb, sweet lug of a guy. But I kinda feel LSH, who has done sageuks before, might have done a better Yushin than UTW. Not sure though.

"but even he is starting to pale in comparison to the versatility that Bidam brings – the humor, the seriousness, the deviousness, the wildness and the depth of his character – I love it all."

I just came to the conclusion that Bidam is to QSD what Spike is to the Buffyverse. Mishil has carried QSD for so long, but now it's really about Bidam and his wildcard ways.

Sigh. The sequence with Bidam sleeping while the others were all so serious about Bijae. That was LOVE!! :D

I actually watched several episodes of QSD after adult deok-man appeared but I guess I could not stand the way the drama was turning (to put it bluntly) overdramatic... I don't know if it became better after that.. and I know I shouldn't judge the whole series due to the few episodes I didn't like but that's the way I analyze (and sometimes overanalyze) dramas.. There are several shows I stopped watching that I should have probably continued - the most famous being Boys Over Flowers. I watched it till around ep. 18 or 19.. I stopped when I felt like it was getting overdramatic.. (that's probably an understatement for the series!)

P.S - One of my favorite characters other than young deok-man is Alcheon (sp?), the hwarang who is not antagonistic towards yushin and deok-man.... and of course who doesn't love Mishil... Ko Hyun Jung's acting is phenomenal!

Yeah, the show's tone switched greatly after episode 25 or so. One strength of the writing is that the story arc shifts every 4-5 episodes or so. There's a tournament. There's a kind of "This Mishil vs. Deokman" chess match. There's that one episode where Munno beats up the entire Hwarang army. Don't like what you're watching at all? Just wait 2 weeks and it'll shift to something totally new. The story is more or less Bidam now, and possibly a reunion between Bidam and This Mishil.

"Ko Hyun Jung’s acting is phenomenal!"

KHJ's performance is actually getting goofier as the show progresses. She's not so much plotting evil now as she seems vaguely spaced out due to all the evil that's she smoked out in her mind. :D Personally, I think spending all her scenes sitting at the Table of Evil has started to mess with her (increasingly large) head.

I'm also speculating that This Mishil and Bidam may fall in love with each other. No, not really. :D

It's good that QSD did not reveal that Mishil had other children from Kings Jinheung (Yeongjo of Yi San), Jinji (IM HO!!! :D), Crown Prince Dongryeon (Jinheung's long-dead son; Jinpyeong's long-dead father), and (!shock!) Jinpyeong...

@14...
is Sung Yuri's Baekje Princess a historical character???

anyhow, didn't anyone notice that Deokman and Cheonmyeong are missing a (also well-known) sister??? It's Princess Seonhwa.

I didn't know Bidam was also historical...

@18
Bidam is Mishil's son (?)...I heard...

Oy, this was so engaging. I lost sleep for weeks hooked into QSD when it came to Netflix. My my laptop gave me too much access to this addictive story.

I hope every one liked it as much as I. Bidam was done so well! I hope Nam-Gil is as nice a guy as his acting.
