Mother will get a U.S. theatrical release
by javabeans
Looks like director Bong Joon-ho‘s most recent film, Cannes entry Mother (starring Won Bin and Kim Hye-ja), will be getting a theatrical release in the U.S.
American film distributor Magnolia Pictures has bought the rights for a North American run, and announced on August 31 that the release will happen sometime in early 2010. Magnolia is the distributor that also imported director Bong’s previous film, The Host, for a U.S. run in 2007. Along with Mother, they have also licensed Bong’s debut feature film, 2000’s A Higher Animal (starring Lee Sung-jae, Bae Doo-na). A representative from Magnolia said, “In the future, we would like to continue to distribute the movies directed by Bong Joon-ho.”
Mother screens this month at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Mother is also South Korea’s entry for the upcoming Academy Awards in the foreign film category.

good for them, let's hope it gets an actual release, even if it's limited. Sometimes, they'll only show it in L.A. or New York, let's hope it reaches other states too.
shallow fangirl mode: WON BIN!!!!!!!!!

I hope that means even with the limited release, my local theater (which often shows foreign/indie movies) will show this. It would be awesome to see Won Bin on the big screen again. Though I'm not as piqued to see this as I was for The Host.

oh I can't wait! I'm definitely going to watch this movie in a big screen. I already saw it online without english subtitle. With no understanding of the language, Kim Hye-ja is such a wonderful actress. She left me with such awe, that I will never forget her performance in this film. Won Bin was also great in here. Bong Jong-ho is one excellent director. I also loved his movie Host.

I hope it's released somewhere near my city. I'm a big fan of Won Bin and I haven't watched this yet so it would be great to watch this in the theaters first. It's a rare opportunity to watch Korean films at theaters here in the US.
