Go Hyun-jung gives extravagant gifts to drama crew
by javabeans
You often hear of actors giving out presents to crew members, but it’s usually something small — T-shirts, jackets, or cosmetics that they endorse — and there’s no shame in small gifts. Go Hyun-jung, star of the MBC drama series Queen Seon-deok, however, has given 150 portable game players (Nintendo DS Lite) to her staff as a thank-you and Chuseok present. The gift set her back a cool 20 million won (or $16K total — yowsa!); each player retails at $130 here in the States.
I know, Go Hyun-jung is a huge star and it’s likely she’s making tons of money off the super-hit series, which has been extended an additional 12 episodes, but she sure didn’t have to shell out for 150 Nintendo players. Definitely a nice gesture to the hardworking crew for the upcoming holiday weekend.

NOW, this is a gift. yes, there is no shame in small gifts, but it makes the star seem kind of petty and unoriginal to give T-shirts or cosmetics... when one knows they can afford it and the cosmetics are probably free samples.

This Mishil has a reputation for being kind of a mom on the set. That's why PDs love working with her.

That's so nice of her. I like hearing stories like that of people's generosity.
Keanu Reeves once gave the staff of one of his movies each a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Wowee. Talk about generosity!

Oh, forgot to rant about this drama though.
I really can't stand the direction this drama is going. The writing has gone downhill from the Bijae episode. Are these the same writers or did some aliens take their place? What's with YuShin's marriage to Mishil's granddaughter?!!
It was so sudden and not much of an emotional response from either YuShin or Deokman. I don't look forward to the episodes anymore like I used to.

Wow. Generous.
I remember reading that Jennifer Garner made brownies and cupcakes for her crew members which I thought was super sweet only because that's personal effort (if she really did bake them herself).
I like reading about generous celebs. It makes reading about the assholes supporting Polanski much less. . . biting.

^Polanski should rot in prison!
but whoa- Nintendo DS lite! a much more original gift that t-shirts, jackets, and makeup. Even if they don't play it, they can still give it to their kids or sell it and make some money- which would be really crass- if Go hyun-jung gives me a Nintendo DS lite, I will definitely be treasuring it!

@Rna,
"Are these the same writers or did some aliens take their place? What’s with YuShin’s marriage to Mishil’s granddaughter?!!"
I think that had to be done given Yushin's actual history. (I think Deokman x Yushin really existed, and so it's hard to substantiate a romanticrelationship between them.) Yushin and Chun Chu are the two most historically significant characters in the story.
Having said that, it was poorly, poorly done. Also Munno/Bidam was poorly done too. For a show that took its time with emotionally significant shifts, the show went East of Eden on itself in Episode 37+38.

she's an spokesperson for the DS lite so maybe she got a discount?? In this economy, as generous as that is, its kinda wasteful.... Or maybe she got them for free via request from Nintendo. Anyway, regardless, still a nice thank you gesture for their hard work!

She is the spokeperson for Nintendo DS Lite so she got it for free. It's quite good publicity for her and free publicity for product so it pays for itself.

She probably got them for free or a discount, but honestly, I would prefer something I could use. Winter is coming, maybe a jacket or something. A gamer isn't going to keep me warm. I'm just saying.. beggar can't be chooser.

it is so nice of her to share her blessings....let's face it not all of the crew or staff are paid much, she just want them to have fun or have a break when they are not shooting so as not to be bored/alleviate the stress...

Wow, generous. I'd happily become one of Mishil's minions if she'll give me one too; it retails for over $200 here.
@ anna
LOL well if you ask me, I'd take the Nintendo DS Lite any day. I'm pretty sure most of these people have enough of a wardrobe, and even if they don't, they can quite easily buy a good jacket for less than the price of a Nintendo DS. A portable gaming system is hardly something that "can't be used."

Her ex-husband is (still) a rich guy, the vice-president of the Shinsegae Group. His mother (owns 1.5 billion$) is the president of this group and the sister of Samsung's godfather, thus he belongs to the richest family in Korea. He married Go Hyun-jung after the Drama "Sandglass", when she was the most popular actress, and they got divorced in 2003. Cost him probably some share of his fortune and she probably doesn't work for a living. Her wedding ring alone was over 100000$ when i remember correctly.
There is this funny rumor that her face is banned from any e-mart (belongs to Shinsegae, biggest retailer in Korea), so no ads or packings with images of her.

"Cost him probably some share of his fortune and she probably doesn’t work for a living. "
Go Hyung Jung doesn't really need to work. Ever. Now, having said that, she's also in the uber, uber A-list of payscale. Which uhhh leads to snarkism but whether she actually deserves to be paid as such, since she was mostly famous for Sandglass, her pageant queen image, and then the Diana+Charles fallout of her marraige.
Nevertheless, in a way, she does represent a certain kind of model image for most Korean women and something of an eternally youthful persona for 30-something men. (Thus her gig as THE noona actress.) Often pays progressive, even powerful women, and This Mishil, though a villain turn, is not all that different from the prototypical GHJ role.
