Executioners set for fall release

For those of us who were disappointed to see Yoon Kye-sang rather wasted in the drama Triple, thankfully he is coming out with a new movie, and it looks more promising. Executioners [집행자] is a dramatic film that takes the look at two men who work on death row at a prison.

The film takes a look at capital punishment and condemned criminals, a topic not oft-explored in Korean cinema, and stars Yoon Kye-sang playing the newbie guard to Jo Jae-hyun‘s (New Heart) veteran. Despite the grim subject, the film is said to tackle the conflict felt by these prison guards, who must prepare their inmates for death, with a provocative but poignant and even humorous touch.

With its story, the film takes a critical look at the practice of accepting a bonus and following orders to kill people, using the reason that “it’s just a job.” As the new and ambitious arrival, Yoon Kye-sang’s guard character embodies that mentality, but comes to fight an inner battle as the realities of his job tug at his conscience. Jo Jae-hyun, on the other hand, is the older guard who has somehow managed to retain his humanity while working in this profession. Friendships form between inmate and executioner and are expressed with “warm sympathy,” while tears are shed as the executioner tries to save the life of a condemned criminal who attempts suicide.

Executioners is set for a November theatrical release.

Interesting content; and both have shown to be great actors. Also agree YKS was entirely wasted in Triple. His role really was the most frustrating and annoyingly inappropriate male character I've seen in years. Even villains are more likeable than his character in Triple.

Makes me think of Green Mile--interesting given the recent probing into the ethics involved in Japanese death row inmates.
Glad that YKS is involved--he gets better and better (minus the Triple--that wasn't his fault).

Is this the guy from the movie The Romance? If so, I really liked him in that; and I already loved YKS from Who Are You, so I think this is definitely a must-see for me.

I watched Triple and loved Yoon Kye Sang! Then I watched Who Are You? and now I'm watching Crazy for Love. I've downloaded My Sister-in-Law is 19 and will watch that next. I'm so smitten!!!!

I'll look into his movies next...:)

This sounds promising, indeed. It also reminds me of YKS's last 'mockumentary' movie with Ha Jeong Woo, Beastie Boys, another two-men team movie though dealing with an entirely subject. While Triple is a wrong drama choice, he is picking up good movie projects.

@Nokcha
I loved My sister in Law is 19. It was super entertaining. I think that drama partially embodies the success of very shoujo like kdramas from the early 2000s. It's not a particularly well made drama I think, but thoroughly enjoyable in a way that korean romantic comedy dramas haven't been in a while

agree with oblivia, feels like its the green mile, which was hit back then
hope this movie has really strong performances to make the team, themselves and the prison guards proud/consicence of what they do

This sounds something that would be interesting to watch. It has a different plotline, and two great actors.

Yoon Kye Sang is always in comedy-light dramas, so I want to see him in this film~ ^^

I've never watched Green Mile though, is it good?
I think the whole plot of Executioners sounds interesting, so if it is really similar, I might give it a go.

My Sister in Law is 19 was one of my favorite dramas when I was younger. I liked it so much I even bought the tapes from the Korean market XD
I think I still have the tapes in some box o.O

But I didn't like the ending -.- Well it was okay, but I was not completely satisfied.

****Nokcha, the below contains some spoilers*****

It's like, I don't like how person A believed he could "give" girl B to boy C, because he knew boy C's feelings for girl B, even though girl B had no feelings for boy C and loved boy A. (although at the end she likes boy C...) Is she an object to toss around with @___@ What about HER feelings!?

So yeah, if that did not makes sense (since... I didn't want to put in names) sorry -_-
But, the ending relationships bothered me a wee bit. I still loved the drama though~

I am in the right company... YKS groupies :)

Have the same immediate thought about this new film - Tom Hanks' Green Mile.

I liked all his dramas. Loved him in Crazy for You. The leading lady there is really good. Restrained effective acting.

What's good about YKS is he can be really good in comedy, what with his brightly-lit-up face when he smiles and equally effective in melo-dramatic scenes as in Crazy For You.

Yeah, i agree with the comments of others..the movie sounds like The Green Mile which stars Tom Hanks, my favorite Hollywood actor..hehe.. though The Green Mile seems supernatural, it does contain much like what was described in the Executioners.. Anyway, Yoon Kye Sang is a good actor, haven't seen Triple though but My 19 Year Old Sister In Law was very entertaining.

I want to see this movie so badly.. I'm willing to watch anything YKS is in but I like the fact that he got to work with Jo Jae-hyun in this movie.

@ langdon813: Yup, he's the same guy Jo Jae-hyun.

Just finished Crazy for You! Loved it! He's very good, I think, in this melodrama. A funny note, I teach, and while we were supposed to be finishing our reading exercises, I told my 5th graders the story of Chae Joon and Jin Yeong up to the point when she takes the ferry to the island (don't think that's a major spoiler). The kids were riveted! During lunch recess, they all surrounded me, including the 1st graders, 2nd graders, and 3rd graders, 4th graders begging to hear the rest of the story. It was hysterical! And then the questions:

*spoilers*

Who loved who?, why did they leave? Was he really sick? Did he have the surgery? What happened to Min Hee? What happened to Hyun Chul? Was the gangster friend really mean? Did he remember? Did she forgive him? so many whys and how comes.....Recess ended, and so ended the story, for the day. They know I'm watching the last ep. tonight and are eager to get an update tomorrow.

I'm going to ask them to write a paragraph telling what they think happened...and then tell them the rest of the story. Should be entertaining.

Thanks for the feedback on Sister-n-law. Can't wait to watch.

I have seen Fly Boys a long time ago. Forgotten about it until I read the summary on Yesasia. Didn't enjoy it at all. Found it to be completely silly. Many years ago on a trip to Seoul, I was able to see g.o.d perform during their 100 concert event. So sorry I didn't recognize YKS at that time!!!! 'knocking head against wall in frustration!' I do have somewhere, a Time Asia with g.o.d on the cover. There's an article about how the groups are managed/controlled. It was the time when H.O.T was trying to get away from their management company. I'll have to see if I can find that magazine.

I'm glad he is redeeming myself with this new project because I just cannot finish watching 'Triple'. The beginning was great and the story line was decent but around episode 10 it didn't do it for me anyone. I've dled all the episodes so one of these days I'll finish watching it but not anytime soon. Can't wait to watch this. And I hope his next drama choice will be more enjoyable to watch.

@18 MinT

If you like drama, then you'll like Crazy For You. I think the entire cast did a pretty good job.

I'd like to think it's a good ending, hopeful.

What do the others think?

I looooooooooooooove Yoon Kye Sang! I think he's a great actor because he's able to act well in all types of scenes, drama, comedy, romance, etc.
I'm looking foward for this movie. The plot seems interesting.

Am so happy that YKS has another project coming up, I read in a magazine interview that he was rather down after doing Beastie boys - poor soul. And triple wasnt that great on ratings. The Executioner's story sound interesting.

Anyway, I love his luminous complexion!
