Seo Woo takes on a Lolita role in Paju
by javabeans
I guess the sexy schoolgirl is never going out of style, but the plot of the upcoming melodrama/romance film Paju [파주] seems like it may have an interesting take.
Seo Woo (who won some awards for best new actress at the end of last year for her role in Crush and Blush) takes the lead as a “provocative and outrageous” student who falls in love with her older sister’s boyfriend, played by Lee Seon-kyun (Coffee Prince, Triple). This is complicated by the fact that she also suspects the boyfriend of foul play, as he’s the only one who knows the secret behind her sister’s death.
The 21-year-old Seo Woo plays ages spanning from middle through high school, and portrays a mix of innocent and provocative appeal. Her character first meets Lee Seon-kyun’s when he is brought in as her tutor, and he begins dating her sister. After her sister dies, she becomes closer to him and eventually falls in love with him.
Paju is directed by Park Chan-ok of Warm Swamp (2004) and Jealousy Is My Middle Name (2002). The film is currently in post-production and will release in the fall.
(Meanwhile, it sure seems like Lee Seon-kyun is working up a storm, doesn’t it? Every few months he’s got a new drama or film coming out — his resumé lists four films and two dramas in the past year alone. Not that I’m complaining.)

Interesting....
Lee Sun Gyoon (선균 선균?) as a potentially creepy killer tutor? The better the actor, the more freaked out I would be if I were to watch... seems like it will have a scary ending...

( not that I'm complaining either...)
A thriller! I like!

You know, I wouldn't mind a film that has a happy beginning, a happy middle and then a happy ending. Nobody's sister is mysteriously dead, nobody's tutor has a secret to tell or hold tight, nobody dies of cancer, nobody gets fired from their job or gets hit by a car on an icy road, no love triangle where there has to be a loser, no parents-in-law who treat their daughter-in-law like crap... none of that.
I'd like to see Lee Sun Gyoon as a man who finds his love, both he and his love being adults of appropriate mental and emotional maturity and stability, marries and then they have as many children or no children, biological or adopted or not, as they both shall happily agree, with parents on both sides who support and cheerfully encourage both of the married couple. No marital strife, no job security issues, no jealousy by someone or another, no bad loan sharks to threaten people, no parents hitting their children or yelling at them, no monetary embarrassment or class warfare issues.
My wife says that would be a flop of a movie and quite boring, but can we just have some fairy tale moments in our lives where nothing bad happens to anyone and nobody cries in anguish and nobody gets hurt?
If there has to be an "issue to overcome," maybe it is Lee Sun Gyoon trying to learn how to sing and trying to participate in a local radio singing competition. And then in the end, he places 3rd, wins a year's supply of cotton socks, which is just fine with him because he likes cotton socks and for everyone else in family (they also like cotton socks). The end. I'll buy the DVD and the OST to the movie, to help support it financially.

Then maybe you'd enjoy the drama Love & Marriage? Mostly sweet and hardly any angst.

I've only seen Lee Seon-kyun in Coffee Prince, and he played the "nice guy" so convincingly that I can't imagine him playing an eeevil, murderous tutor, with a penchant for younger girls.
Samsooki, maybe you could produce such a show. You could cut down on costs by casting readers of dramabeans. Everyone seems like a kind-hearted bunch, so I'm sure they would work for free. (;

This plot looks very similar to the American movie 'The Invisible Circus' starring Jordana Brewster and Cameron Diaz. The younger sister falls in love with her sister's boyfriend and suspects him of her death while trying to search for clues from when she initially disappeared from home.

@JB - Thank you for the rec! We will give it a try right after Star In My Heart, 2 Outs in Bottom of 9th, City Hall, Friends and Partner...maybe even Triple... Like everybody else on DB, it appears we are a little backed up right now... ugh. Btw, Star In My Heart is killing me right now, because I feel so bad for Choi Jin Shil's character, and City Hall is killing me too, I feel bad for KSA's character. Everybody stop making me feel bad! LOL.
@6 def201 -
Hmmmm..... What if I create a drama about 3 brothers who compete for the attention of a very special woman (or man!) and I cast Lee Sun Gyoon as the lead, KJH and YKS as his brothers - hopefully they will work for free. Then I'll have an open casting call on Dramabeans and then..... hmmm... I guess I would literally be ripped apart by dramabeans readers who didn't make call-backs....
...*wow* that sounds painful. I think I'll just safely read JB's posts from behind my firewall. Thank you for the idea, but I prefer to live. :)
So, maybe it is better that Paju is the movie. (Doesn't Lee Sun Gyoon in the very last picture look a little bit like Won Bin???)

WOW, I can't imagine The Voice being mean or sinister. Listening to him speak is like the acoustic equivalent of hot fudge sliding over vanilla ice cream.

YEP, me too. What brand cotton socks, lets get them to sponsor this 'feel good' movie or series as well. Binnie and Hwannie for your leads ??
Dread to count the films, series I have on hold - cant face the plot, actors, actresses etc. YET....
Point me to the sock department, lets boost sales.

NOT Won Bin with the short hair in the title picture for this DB post:

i've only seen lee seon kyun in coffee prince and now triple, but for me his cuteness and lovability came from his characters' attitudes, not from his looks. so i think i can totally dig him playing a creepy not-so-good-guy.

I dig LSK just about as much as the next girl, but I gotta say I am starting to feel a teeny bit tired of him. He's great and everything, no denying it, but I feel like we get the same thing from him in every movie/drama. Here's hoping for some versatility from him in the future...

I dont think such a movie would flop - it's like a dream of a man, a life without pain and distress. I think everyone would want to watch it and put away all their problems in real life, placing themselves as the characters within the movie :)
@Beatrice: Even though he may play different roles, in the end it's always like the "same person". Like from Coffee Prince and Triple, the way he portrays and acts each of the characters are similar. Almost like Choi Hansung decided to stop making music and worked in the advertising field and became Hae Yoon.
He's a good actor, but he always acts the same (imo). Perhaps this time he might be the evil dude and I want to see a fierce LSK at the end with blood lusting eyes >:)
Even if he may be no Do-Woo (Do-Woo will always stick in my mind as one of the best villain-types in K-drama history.) but I want to see LSK be completely detached from the gentle type (hopefully by the end of the movie.)
Always to be honest, he may not even be the murderer and yet I'm already anticipating him to be the villain -_-

@23 seri -
Purely purely purely out of academic curiousity.
Is sister-hopping considered bad form, and, whose "bad" is it?
i.e., example:
Guy X starts dating Girl Y. Girl B has a sister Girl Z. X dates Y, then, say Y dumps Z. Is X not able to date Z? If X DOES in fact start dating Z, then who's at fault (or is nobody at fault, because "sister-hopping" is okay, as long as each person is an adult and knows what he or she is doing)?
1. X, because "sister-hopping" is bad form for X.
2. Y, because it's her fault that X was free to date other people.
3. Z, because she should have realized that X is off-limits for her.
and does the answer change if X was the one who dumped Y?

LSK was pretty good as a badass amoral PI in The Customer is Always Right. Maybe those who complain he acts the same have only seen his drama roles Coffee Prince-onwards? The Voice is excellent at playing The Nice Guy, but he's capable of so much more y'all, esp in his film work.
That said, let's hope this movie makes him uberly creepy so he can break out of that particular typecasting rut.

The socks thing is probably a bit facetious lol, but okay, I'll bite. You might take to Lee Joon Ik's movies Radio Star and The Happy Life -- the characters have a few problems (an aging has-been rockstar reviving a failing radio show, a couple of guys starting a band) but nothing major and not treated in a melodramatic way, just ordinary people living ordinary lives who love music. There's a little bitter mixed in with the sweet, but that makes them authentically feel-good.

This is probably the first Korean drama/movie that I have had an honest interest in. I've seen Stairway to Heaven/Winter Sonata/Autumn Tale/ect and I found them all to be overly dramatic and unrealistically predictable. Everything was the same, rich guy/sweet girl are childhood lovers, one leaves then comes back, stuff happens, one gets amnesia but the power of love overcomes that and then one of them dies all of a sudden. I'm glad this seems more realistic, serious, and less fairy-tale like. A slice of the darker side of life and love, if you will. The actor/actress don't seem like perfect cookie-cutter faces either which makes them seem more realistic and individual. I hope they have respectable acting skills, because I'm looking forward to seeing this and liking it. :D
