Kim So-eun in Singles and a new drama
by javabeans
Kim So-eun trades her usual long, straight locks for a curly mop and a smoky eye in the July issue of Singles.
Inside the magazine, the interview with Kim talks of the roles she’s taken on as a child actor, as well as her breakout role playing Chae Shi-ra‘s younger character in the historical series Iron Empress and, of course, by her popularity as Ga-eul in Boys Before Flowers. In the few months since the latter wrapped, Kim So-eun has picked up numerous endorsement deals for brands like Clean and Clear, Pocari Sweat, and Anycall.
Kim So-eun calls herself “lucky” in her roles, talks about studying hard for university entrance (which friends told her was unnecessary since she’s famous), and recounts how she earned the nickname of “Runaway” in high school because she used to always run away whenever a boy she liked would appear.
She currently stars in The Man Who Can’t Get Married, which just began airing yesterday on KBS. The drama pulled in a mere 8% rating on its first day (competitor Queen Seon-deok is holding strong with 27%). Already she is drawing notice for her new role, which differs from her sweet and innocent Ga-eul character; in The Man Who Can’t Get Married, she displays a bright, lively personality with a hint of slyness. (That’s according to the reviews; haven’t seen it for myself yet. Anybody got comments on the drama?)

I dislike Pocari Sweat. But Kim So-Eun is a cutie. I wonder if she is a good actress? (I've not seen BFF or Iron Empress or The Man Who Can’t Get Married... )
JB (or anyone else with an opinion): of the people of Kim So Eun's generation, who is the best actor / actress? Or, if not "best," who are the ones to keep an eye on?

Kim So-eun is a pretty good actress. She's a lot better than one might think for someone of her age. She's not totally there yet, but she has promise. (Example: she's actually quite commanding in Iron Empress, in stark contrast to how most people know her as Ga-eul.)
Moon Geun-young tops her generation, fo' sho'. Also, Park Bo-young.
Shim Eun-kyung (Legend) is bound to be up there the more she grows up. Han Bo-bae (Last Scandal) is adorable but still needs work; if she improves, she certainly has the charm. Park Shin-hye might be iffy; she was good as a child actor but pretty awful in Goong S, but I'd still watch for her.
Actresses of that generation who (are pretty but) need to work on their acting: Lee Yeon-hee, Go Ara, Han Hyo-joo, Moon Chae-won, Yoon-ah
(This list doesn't take into account actresses who are in their mid-twenties or older, such as Lee Da-hae or Han Ji-hye)

for me, kim so eun is very pretty and cute. but i dont think she's the best actress in her generation.. moon geun young is absolutely the best.
i think kim so eun is quite good in acting. but i'm honestly not so sure why is she capturing so much attention after BBF.. because she hasn't prove anything yet until now.
hmm..

WOW! Love the perm...she's rockin' the style ^_^!!!
I used to watch "Iron Empress" when she was still in it. She has that kind look about her, but very dominating as far as acting goes.

Lovely lovely girl!
I'm currently watching Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, I really wanna see how she'll play the part of Michiru. I guess I'll have to wait 'til Story of a Man's over on KBS America, unless somebody posts eps on Viikii.
I'm so happy for my OTP, they're both busy!

Wow, Moon Geun Young (문근영) won Baeksang for Painter of the Wind. I've never seen anything she has been in. And Park Bo Young ... haven't seen her in anything either...
Time never stops, does it.
We all get older and everyone who we liked is getting older and the next generation is coming up.
Well, Kim So Eun, Moon Geun Young and Park Bo Young... now on my "pay attention to" list. Not sure when we will see anything by them in the near future, but at least now, I know the names.
Thank you!

I've started watching Kim So-eun in The Man Who Can't Get Married and her role is really a far cry from Gaeul in BOF. I think I read somewhere that the character she is portraying is much older than her actual age, and yeah she is quite sly here unlike her previous role. I can't really tell more about the drama and I haven't seen the original production yet but I find Kim So-eun adorable in the drama, I think she could pull it off successfully. She's one of the next generation of actresses I'm rooting for too.

Wow! She looks so different! I love watching her in BOF.
I like Park Bo-young too in Speed Scandal!
Although both of them are very young but they are really good in their acting. That's no doubt about it.

I dont think Moon is in Kim's generation. She should be in a different group(born in 1985~1988), nd other generation(1989~1992).Well, no doubt Moon is good at acting, but for her, it is very difficulte to change a new style. Kim So Eun is good, has better acting skills than her generation ppl nd shes pretty! I would go for her.
I enjoy the new drama very much even I ve seen the Japanese version before!

I liked her as Ga Eul, She never over acted, never forced on the sweet cute side. Especially compared to Jan Di. I thought she conveyed emotions by acting simply. And she is so fresh and young!

i agree with snoopy...i liked ga eul in BBF because she was so fresh & down to earth..like a normal person..as opposed to the caricatures ahem.. portrayed by some of the other characters :p
she is quite pretty in those curls..now i feel like going out & perming my hair!

yup she is good.. and i think she even can bring more. so hopfully i'll see other dramas than BBF for her.
I totally agree for Shim Eun-kyung (Legend). she was amazing. definitely i'll keep an eye on her.
for lee Yeon-hee. i was really disappointed with her role in EOE. it was a really big role. too bad she missed the opportunity.
for Han Hyo-joo she is doing pretty good in Brilliant legacy. but again like Kim So-eun she can bring even more.
btw Kim So-eun looks wonderful in Singles. i think she got that attention bcz she has this special beauty comparing to her generation. and let's be honest the lead girl in BBF kinda disappointed us. so we want other girl to like. and she was there with the cutie Kim bum.
and for The Man Who Can’t Get Married. it will be even easier to love her more (at least for me) bcz i'm not a fan of Uhm Jung Hwa.

She was wonderful as Ga Eul! Loved her! And she looks so great with the perm! So different!
I'm a totally newbie to the Kdrama world, but would Yoon Eun Hye be in her generation, or is she a bit older? Either way, I adore her! I recently finished watching Coffee Prince and am now watching Goong. If it isn't too weird for me to claim an actress like I've claimed actors (Kim Bum & Kim Joon) I would totally claim Yoon Eun Hye!

For me I can proudly say that I watch KSE not just because she's a pretty face but because she is naturally talented and can quite act well. Unlike someone like, say, Kim Tae Hee, who I'm only watching because her face is smaller than the size of a CD.
The Man Who Can't Marry has so far been LOTS OF FUN. I mean, this is the first k-drama I've decided to watch before English subtitles have been released so I can only imagine my enjoyment for this series will be magnified 100 time over once the lovely people at WITHS2 have finished the subs. I haven't seen the original Japanese drama yet so I guess this allows me to appreciate the Korean remake more.
I love Pocari Sweat BTW. It's nowhere near as sickeningly sweet as Gatorade/Powerade and seems to quench the thirst a bit better. Oh, and the fact that it's endorsed by Kim So Eun only makes it taste that little bit better ;)

Kim So Eun was the first major reason i've watched Iron Empress, her acting there is so good compare to her 'sister' (the one playing younger Shinae)...
and her beauty is so fresh compare to go ara or lee yeonhee...
and i agree with you JB, Kim So Eun, Park Bo Young and Moon Chae Won are the actresses to watch for in the upcoming years...

I have that type of hair after a shower so for me it's not really a 'hot' look. =P I prefer her with her straight hair. But to each her own I guess.
For me, Nam Ji Hyun who plays the younger version of Queen Seon Duk is the best actress in the 'younger' generation. I guess she is too young though to be in the same group as Kim So-eun as she's a '95-er.

No doubt she's pretty, AND talented. No wonder everybody craves for her nowadays... haven't seen her latest drama yet, but I think she'll do well. She was pretty impressive in Cheon Chu and BBF..
#19 Andromytta,
Yoon Eun Hye's not in the same age generation as Kim So Eun. She's an 84-er... same year as Han Ji Hye and Lee Da Hae.
Moon Geun Young's totally a catch. She may be 3 years older than KSE, but she's way ahead of her in terms of experience in the industry. She's been acting like since she was 12/13? I don't remember. But she's currently my fav young actress - totally blew me away in Painter of the Wind.
Shin Eun Kyeong's also a gem. I remember seeing her in Hwangjini and The Legend, and she was so good. When she grows up she's gonna rawk em all...

i like these pictures...again its something different...i dont know if she's purposely trying to shed Ga Eul from BOF or not but its working and its making me look forward to her new work because I like that she's not sticking to the usual....
out of the girls from her generation ... i'd say Yoona is another breakout of recent times..i believe she's even younger than Kim So Eun, that being said, I'm not a fan of her acting but I think she's got potential. Personally, Moon Geun Young is not one of my favs of her generation. Granted she's been in the industry longer than many stars....there's something about her that I dont find "pretty" or "cute" or anything else attractive on the physical front which makes watching her on screen so much harder...but thats just me. I think Go Ah Ra has got potential to make it big in the future, but she's really got to work on those facial expressions...

Not only her sister, but also a lot better than Chae Si Ra's potrayel of Empress Chun Chu. I just couldn't stand watching CSR after watching KSE for 8 episodes I had to give up what was initially a very good series.
Isn't that what makes her performance impressive though, since she carries off her new older image very well, as opposed to her much younger roles in BoF and IE.

Kim So Eun iis refreshingly pretty with clear, clear skin. But not in these pics. She looks scary here, like she's ready to stab people anytime. LOL.
I am a big fan of BBF and acting-wise, I think she would have done wonders with the role of Jan-di. Kim So Eun is a natural that she can be cute and strong-willed without overdoing it (I cringed each time Gu Hye Sun tried to get cutesy, she never really pulled it off). I have to watch Iron Empress to see more of Kim So Eun's acting.
Aside from Kim So Eun, I also like Park Bo Young, Lee Yeon Hee is quite good in Hello, Schoolgirl but I know the real challenge is in heavier roles. Go Ara, I think, is okay especially when she cries (think Who Are You?), and Yoon Ah was pretty good in 9 End 2 Outs but totally ho-hum in Cinderella Man.
As for Moon Geun Young, I will never find her pretty although she is cute as a button but she can really act. I loved her since My Little Bride.
And I loved Lee Da Hae in My Girl but I hated all her dramas that came after. And Han Ji Hye? I only like her when she dances.

Moon Geun Young is so far ahead of the pack, it's not even funny. She's clearly the best actress of her generation, the most sensitive and lovable young korean actress you can find. Go Ara and Lee Yeon Hee are both pretty, but kinda flaky and shallow in their acting. I kinda like Kim So-eun. She's not quite there yet in her acting skills, but she has a natural beauty that is pleasing and her acting is quite natural too. Kim So-eun should have a bright future ahead of her.

i thought she was pretty in BOF but now she looks older to me...i wouldn't say that she's pretty right now but more like ok-looking..and those pictures are definitely not amazing in any way...aside from the heavy make-up and crazy hair the photos are quite boring.

She has a really soft-spoken aura about her, and I'm sure if they give her a big project (preferably a drama or comedy with good story line & people her age), she would be the next ha ji won or something. I feel that she has something not even Go Ara or Yoon Ah has. (besides Go Ara's acting sucks. and Yoona is overrated.)
And it's a good thing KSE isn't a stick. Every girl I see in the buisness has no meat in them.
I'm rooting for this girl, and after this drama, I wish more success in her projects. And although me and my sister aren't really up to watching He Who Can't Marry (viikii is being a b!tch), we're ready for her movie with Seungho.

After watching autumn tale i thought Moon geun young is the finest korean actress in korea but Kim so eun has made me realise that Korea never fails to surprise the world with pure gem Moon geun young and kim so eun are the two most amazing young actress i have ever seen. Here in India our actresses grow in their acting skills with time but these young ladies are exceptional we in India think they took acting lessons ever since they were born.
