Bae Soo-bin brightens up Brilliant Legacy
by javabeans
SBS’s weekend drama Brilliant Legacy continues to perform well. No, I’m still not following it — I just don’t think it’s for me — but by all accounts it’s zipping along nicely.
The leads are the fresh-faced and cute Lee Seung-gi and Han Hyo-joo; but although he’s not the lead character, actor Bae Soo-bin is attracting a lot of attention for his portrayal of his character Jun-sae. Below is a recent interview with the 32-year-old (also of dramas Painter of the Wind, Jumong) about his current role.
The response to Brilliant Legacy is very good.
I have a lot of affection for this drama. I look forward to it, and every time I go to the film set, I feel a positive energy. Because I get such a good feeling from viewers toward the role I’m playing, I enjoy every day.
Because the drama has 26 episodes, I think the writer is letting the plot unfold quickly. When I look at the scripts at first, even I feel it’s rather hectic. [Laughs] These days, I’ve gotten used to the speed of developments. The actors are all doing a good job, so it makes it fun for me. Although I already know what happens, when I watch the broadcasts, I’m entertained. This is the first time I’ve watched my own drama again on the internet. Haha.
People really love the character of Park Jun-sae.
I hope Jun-sae can receive even more love and support in the future. No, I’d like for him to steal all the hearts of the women in Korea. [Laughs] Whether or not the female viewers are married , I’d like to embody the ideal man whom all women would like to marry or date.
Jun-sae has an image of a caregiver, but what about in reality?
He’s a character who appeals to women’s fantasies. Even as a man myself, I think it would be nice if there was really a guy like Jun-sae who existed in real life. [He thinks intently for a moment] He has some similarities with me, but there are differences too. [Laughs] I can’t study or fight as well as Jun-sae, but I think his nature is similar to mine. [Laughs] On a basic level, Jun-sae is bright person. I tend to be influenced by my roles, and after doing this drama, I think my own personality has brightened.
The focus of the drama is on Lee Seung-gi.
I think that’s natural, since Seung-gi has a higher public profile than me. Of course, I think that as I keep going in my acting career, at some point I’ll receive the focus of attention and carry the responsibility. Until that day comes, I’ll have to prepare as much as possible.
Last year, you took on a serious character in the role of Jung-jo in SBS’s Painter of the Wind.
In a sageuk, I’m acting as a real-life historical figure, so I have to convey the role properly. When I was working on Painter of the Wind, I kept the a spirit of respect for the man as I acted. I did my best to act without harming his image.
However, maybe it’s because this is a contemporary drama, but I’ve lightened up. I deliver my dialogue in an upbeat tone because I want to spread the happiness to the viewers. [Laughs] I’d like for viewers to say that they feel better when they see me come onscreen.
Do you have your own particular criteria for choosing projects?
First, I read the script. When I see the cast, I can determine whether I’ll be able to do this or not. If I think I can create an appealing character, I’m the type who makes up my mind and dives right in. But I’m not someone who insists stubbornly that I absolutely have to take on a certain role. I just have to jump into the project and be fully invested.
I’ll continue doing that in my acting career in the future. Although a drama’s story gets told to others through me, I don’t feel like I should overly exert myself to present a packaged image. That doesn’t suit me. When acting, I have to immerse myself into a role and transform, but I can’t do that for my everyday life.

Why can't he be the lead role? Ehmm, not that I'm following this series either because han hyo-joo's character has something that irritates me . And if the main lead female irritates me with a combination that I don't find the main lead guy role handsome or can act well, I can't stand the drama. Can somebody please tell me why this drama is popular ?!!

Will be interesting to see Bae Soo-bin a few years down the track. Love his lines dropped in perfectly to manoeuvre of the stubborn Han Hyo-joo.. Just as Lee Jun-ki in My Girl, was the wonderful 3rd wheel in the triangle, I think Soo-bin will be as well. These guys are the warm secure comforter (quilt, doona, duvet, whatever you want to call them) of the heroines life. Han Hyo-joo will end up with the sparks flying, bit of a ratbag, rebel of Lee Seung-gi.
Love Grandma, LOATHE the evil stepmother......bring back the stocks. lol

I'm glad to be reminded that this series has 26 episodes. I know that the story is somewhat predictable, but for some reason the way that they are doing the story this time I am genuinly entertained by it. I think the thing that is different is the fact that in the story I'm really not bored by how each character is developing.
-Thanks for the short interview, even though you aren't watching the show!

It seems like the Han Hyo Joo potrayal of Guem Jandi is better then how they potrayed Jandi in BOF. Even though this is a different character, and this is a totally different story.

Glad to know he enjoys his popularity and character. seems like a very bubbly person from the interview.

I have just discovered BSB and yes, he is really good looking .....refined, sensitive and elegant. His Bambi eyes go straight to your heart. But I find the character he's playing in BL too perfect.....the writer needs to mix it up!
The two young leads have great chemistry. HHJ 's so pretty and while I don't find LSG good looking he is very likable and that's all I ask.

Its unfortuante that at this point he's completely overshadowed Lee Seungi, as for Han Hyo Joo I don't think she annoying at all, she's probably one of the better female leads, shame about seungi who's acting ability is pretty weak.
26 eps, hmm so seems like they've got some big storyline planned, hopefully its not predictable. One thing is that even though 10 eps have gone past I haven't found it draggy or slow at all.

I haven't started on this drama yet, but what I'm impressed about BSB so far is he was able to portrait well in many extreme different characters: a villain in Emperior of the Sea, a mysterious tactic in Jumong, and a charming king in Painter of the Wind.

@goldlilys :
Same here. I wish someone can tell me why this show receives such high rating.
I don't like both the leads. Not knowing much about Han Hyo-joo initially, I thought she had not acting experience as seen in the first two episodes. Frankly it is the evil stepmother and Bae Soo-bin making me stay and watch the rest of the show.
The stepmother is great. When I watch the "Golden Bride", she makes me believe how kind she is. And now she is completely opposite.
I would say she is my favourite evil mother, next to Gu JunPyo's mom, XD.

Lee seung gi does nothing for me, Bae soo Bin, thats another story ;)
I loving Shining inheritance atm ^^
old concept, fresh twist. I Like! I hope HHJ doesn't turn into a bore and lose her spunkiness half way through.
Her friend Hye JIn was one of the mean girls in BOF right? I do like her. =) Up and coming actress? And that manager guy that lee seung gi beat up is also verrryyy cute.

Han Hyo Joo kind of resembles Keira Knightly to me, especially when she smiles. I think she's cute in Brilliant Legacy. I also liked her in Iljimae. She has spunk.
They always make the nice guy who never gets the girl character so boring. I hope BSB can make the character more interesting. He is really cute though.

"I wish someone can tell me why this show receives such high rating."
I can't speak for the masses, but here are some reasons why I've finished six episodes and plan to continue:
~ Bae Soo-bin.
~ Something's definitely hatching inside that mass (mess?) of hair on LSG's head and I want to be around to see it emerge.
~ LSG's Hwan character is such a royal jerk he can't be any more rotten than he is now. So I want to see his redemption, that moment of epiphany when he realizes that the world does not revolve only around himself. Above all else I want to see him kneel before his grandma and beg her forgiveness for treating her so shabbily. That guy desperately needs to be spanked.
~ The grandma. She's all kinds of awesome.
~ The grandma's chemistry with Han Hyo-joo. Sweet, funny and heartwarming.
~ Han Hyo-joo. She has improved with every episode and I don't see overacting now, I see only a spirited Go Eun-sung who's extremely likable. I feel vested in Eun-sung's story and want to walk that journey with her as she rebuilds her life.
~ Eun-sung's taming of Hwan. I'm salivating just anticipating this!
~ Kim Mi-sook's acting. She's selfish and wicked but I don't find her hateful. She's just very desperate and human. Best acting so far: Kim Mi-sook and Ban Hyo-jung (the grandma). I really love that these two (and Han Hyo-joo to a lesser extent) are playing strong characters.

I love love this drama! I love the fact that the plot unfolds quickly. I hate it when Korean Dramas get too draggy! I tink Bae Soo Bin has a equally important role as Seung Gi. The four of them are the main cast
And I love Bae Soo Bin in Painter of the Wind!! I still see him as the Emperor in Brilliant Legacy sometimes...And when let's say, the characters treat him badly, I'll start shouting, "He's the emperor! How dare you!!!"
I dun understand why some people find Hyo Joo irritating? (just like how I don't understand people who find Lee Ji Ah irritating) Actually I am really waiting for the day where she reunites with her family...
Seung Gi is love...he provides the comic relief..
And evil stepmother is evil but her acting is STELLAR! Gotta give her props!! I even like Seunggi's Mom and sister who are spoilt brats, but not tat mean...they also provide the comic relief

brilliant legacy/shining inheritance has a relatively interesting plot, and i like lsg as a singer so i guess i'm okay with his acting, b/c i love the expressionless korean guy type ;]. i was really upset in the beginning b/c i thought the lead was going to be with bsb until i read the synopsis. i think bsb would have been a fabulous lead. plus there's a shot with him nekkkkeeddd :3. i love himmmm.
i was surprised to find this, i was hoping you would do storyline and comment posts about shining inheritance but i guess it's just not your cup of tea :P. personally i think it's better by leaps and bounds than BBF, which i had to drag myself through after the first couple of episodes.

Bae Soo Bin is great in here. I love his character... much more now than the character of Jihoo in BBF. The thoughtfulness, the maturity , the righteousness and the unselfishness of his character is astounding. Sigh! wish there are a lot of Jun-Sae's in the real world.
LSG does nothing for me... i just dont find him appealing enough, although his character and HHj's character does have chemistry, i have to admit.
The stepmother's acting is pretty stellar... you would really hate her. Gu Jun Pyo's mom probably would just came second best to her.
Moon Chae Won is also pretty effective as a antagonist... makes me want to strangle her while watching this.
I would say the Shining Inheritance has its own narcotic pull... yes, the plot may appear to be unextraordinary if you just read the synopsis... but It would get you hooked... just like what happened to me
I'm looking forward to future works of Bae Soo Bin

I LOVE BAE SOO BIN`s acting!!! :3333
I´m following this drama currently, at first I did enjoy it but now towards the end, it kinda is becoming a drag and I ´ve been bored ever since jun sae
hasn´t been appearing much.
I feel like the creator/writer of this drama is underestimating the viewers, well me anyways ^ ^ don´t like it very much anymore....
well for lee seungi´s acting, I have been amused, since I watch (and loveee)
him in the variety show 1Night,2Days. where he is completely DIFFERENT
so he really acted well ^^
all in all, it´s so and so...not a must watch (except for BSB ^^)

i always find myself rather belatedly in posting here cause i just watched Shi. Inheritance this week & already i'm falling for Bae soo bin, not only about his character here but as an actor! cute may be an understatement, he's gorgeous! i just felt sorry for his character that eun sung fell for hwan altho in the drama he's transformed from immature to a nice and matured young man, but i guess the apple of my eyes would be junsae or bae soo bin. I'm going to be following his future & past or previous projects from now on. Gosh i don't know anymore myself, everytime i see a drama with a cute or handsome actor sometimes not so handsome (at all) but i get this tendency to add them in my list of favorites! Only in Kdramas that is! thnx javabeans for bringing such good photos, interviews, recaps, etc. to your wonderful site.
Re the drama --- i'm completely glued to my comp. cause this drama is just super addictive! i can't seem to stop watching it...and talk about cliffhangers each time one episode ends...you just feel like you can't stop at that point not even visiting the 'loo'.

@29 i like han yo joo when i first saw her in spring waltz and i agree with you didn't like the mushroom hairstyle as you phrased it but when she's got the hairband on she looks better or even in pony tail. one thing i noticed watching some Kdramas they tend to have the male characters' hairstyle with bangs on! i like bae soo bin's hairstyle kinda spiky and it suits him so much!
bae soo bin is very handsome and pleasant to look at! i can't wait to see his previous projects as this is the first time i'm seeing him in SI or BL. He looks younger for his age of what 33 something? that's not old as one of the postings here suggests. i hope he teams up again with Han yoo or maybe in the future with Son hye jin one of my fave K actresses!

Bae Soo Bin was great in this drama. I didn't think much of Jun Se in the first couple of episodes, but as the story progresses, he became the reason I stuck around for so long. I look forward to every scene he's in. His performance was thoroughly enjoyable.
My inner teenager squeals every time he smiles, and I was so moved when watching him cry. It made me wanna cry with him. The pain on this face was so genuine and heart-wrenching, I couldn't look away for even a sec. I didn't know he could act this well.
The only other drama I've seen with him in it was Jumong; and his part was pretty small, even if it was memorable. I'm glad to see he's getting bigger roles in kdrama. I hear he's going to be the male lead in the next drama (Temptation of an Angel). I'm definitely catching that.
