Younha’s new album and “lovely girl” image

It’s not really a new image — recall that kpop singer Younha had also unveiled a more feminine look for her second album last summer. And Younha (aka the “Oricon comet” given her success on Japan’s pop charts before debuting in Korea) has always been very pretty. But she’s gone a little softer than her usual tomboyish look for this “lovely girl” concept for her new album release.

Her third full-length album is titled “Peace Love & Ice Cream” (something I can get behind!) and goes on sale on April 16. From descriptors, we can expect more of the same (modern rock, ballads, and acoustic pop) from the pop-rock vocalist — which, in Younha’s case, is a very good thing.

Meanwhile, her Japanese movie Next Sunday, in which she takes on the role of a Korean woman studying in Japan, will be released on the 11th in Japan; she’ll head to Osaka for promotional events on the 11th and 12th.

She has a nice clear and powerful voice. Anyone know how old she is? She looks like a teenager, but her voice sounds more mature than that.

I like to crimp just as much as the next, but uhh that hair just looks damaged. Love the 80s-themed clothing though.

"please say it’s just me!"

Yeah her nose bridge seems a little unYounha-like, doesn't it? O_o; (could be photoshop though)

"Anyone know how old she is?"

She turns 21 in a few weeks, but she's been making records for 5 years. (Said to be a Hikki fan way back when, I think.) Her music was featured in J-drama Tokyo Wankei (2004), and then her tune for Bleach made her popular briefly in Japan. So, when she made her debut in Korea, it was like her 3rd proper album and really, she was absolutely polished.

The trailer for her new movie. (Her Japanese is even better now. Wow.)

meh. Who cares you guys. People get correctional surgery and to quote HwanHee of FTTS they do it to "please the fans" and "become successful". It's the end result that matters and ultimately, they have to (usually) run on their own talent. XD

... cool though. Wish her success.

@Biscuit,

Yeah, I'm not sure if she had work done on her nose. It could just be touching up on the photo.

One thing I miss about J-pop-era Younha was, then, there wasn't a big focus on creating an image for her. She was just marketed as a talented singer-songwriter artist. Literally, it looked like she just went to the shows with whatever was in her closet, and a little junk in the hair.

@ #7 belleza
Thanks, after you said bleach I figured out why she seemed so familiar to me. Though I am not a fan Houki Boshi I listened to it enough that I should have recognized the voice.

as much as i love younha, i'm really not digging the crimped up hair and the 'soft girl' image. she's always been a really pretty girl, but i preferred the glam rock, boy cut style she had on her "Someday" album. her tomboyish look, along with her awesome vocals, really made her stand out from the rest of the cutesy, teeny boppers of the kpop crowd.

It sure looks like something changed with her face.. her nose obviously looks a lot different, and did she also do something to her eyes? It looks a lot bigger than it used to..

I don't have a problem with plastic surgery.. but she was perfectly fine before, why the sudden need for a change? It's not like she needs looks to sell albums like other singers, she's definitely too talented for that..

Well, whatever, I still love her music. I guess that's all that matters in the end.

Oh I thought it was only me who noticed it (her nose). Yeah, it seems really very different from her old pictures and as I remember her face pretty well. Although it made her look nicer. I like her voice, she's really very talented. Although she's much more of side of Japanese when it comes to her style even though she is Korean. Even her singing style is so Japanese; probably because she really like the Japanese Culture and she also sang Japanese Songs for animes etc... So yeah; The nose bridge is quite large and high. So it really is noticeable.

"Although she’s much more of side of Japanese when it comes to her style even though she is Korean"

I'm not sure what direction she's going to take with her 3rd Korean album, but I felt that her 2nd record was definitely closer to her older Japanese albums. That made me think that her debut Korean record was probably more of a "crossover" work. She does R&B covers for variety shows and when contributing to other artists, but outside her Korean debut, it hasn't figured all that much.

In terms of arrangements and production, I actually think her best work was "Go! Younha" Japanese debut. Part of the reason is that, especially in Japan, early 20/teen singer-songwriters are already kind of a staple (for example, Yutaka Ozaki was 17 years old when he released his first single, the classic tune 15 No Yoru. Hikki was 19 when she released her most famous album Deep River), and musically (if they're not talentos) they've often put in with the adults. Musically, it's a bit like listening to Vanessa Carlton in how there's loads of jazzy, whimsical string arrangements, flashy piano work, and contrapuntal melodies. In addition, there's also a living, breathing band behind Younha that's allowed to stretch out and groove with her piano playing.

I know a lot of people speculating that Younha's going "cutesy", but it's hard to tell from the current snippet where it's going.
