Hwang Jini raises Ha Ji-won’s profile in Japan
by javabeans
Ha Ji-won is experiencing a second wave of popularity for Hwang Jini, this time in Japan.
She won widespread praise for her role as the titular gisaeng character in KBS’s 2006 sageuk drama, which first aired in Japan on NHK’s satellite station last year. After pulling in enough ratings to make it number 1 in its time slot, NHK then re-broadcast the series on its main channel per fan request; it began airing late last year and recently finished its run. As a result, Ha’s star is once more on the rise despite not doing any particular promotion for the series, which has stirred viewer interest with her acting and dancing — and, of course, those lavish hanboks.
Ha Ji-won first gained Japanese fans through her roles in the dramas Damo and What Happened in Bali. Her next project begins shooting in February; it’s the film My Love By My Side, co-starring Kim Myung-min.

Hwang Jini was one of my favorite sageuks of all time. She's one of my favorite actresses...
When Song Hye Gyo played the giseng in the movie remake of Hwang jini...totally took away the charm and power of Hwang jini that Ha Ji Won played.

Ha Ji won is the best korean actress, imo. Ha Ji won can do any genre: comedy(100 days of mr. arogant or sex is zero), drama(Something happened in Bali). HEYY. Can anyone tell me if she's done evil roles yet? I think it'd be a nice plus in her resume.
Song Hye Gyo was pale and lacked flair and personality.

This is well deserved praise and recognition.
Ha Ji-won was superb as Hwang Jini. The costumes were sumptous and the story riveting. I watch it over and over and never tire of it.
Kudos to her.

I haven't see any of her dramas but she was great in Duelist if anyone's interested. Kang Dong Won plays her love interest and he was really great too. His nick name in the film was Sad Eyes.

Yeah, I think Hwang Jini is being aired in the Saturday 11:00PM slot. It's the slot where stations put anime, experimental dramas, and K-dramas. I think The Legend went into that time, and it did about 7% Damo was aired in 2006 after Dae Jang Geum in that timeslot, and so essentially she's been visible for the last 2 years. Last year, she (and Jang Geun Seuk too?) did an appearance in Japan to promote Hwang Jini.
On NHK BS-2 in the Saturday 11:00PM slot. If I'm reading it right, Hwang Jini (on NHK BS-2, which I think is offered now to all modern households) outperformed all shows in what was likely the Sunday 9:00PM slot. Because Taiga airs on Sunday at 8:00PM, Hwang Jini might have benefitted a little from Atsuhime's popularity.

this is the show that made me realize all the hype about ha ji won is deserved. her transition from naive child to formidable kisaeng was perfectly executed (though, yes, she was a little annoying in her first appearance in the series since she was trying to emphasize that she was playing the immature child hwang jini before she experiences the joys and loss of first love). and the costumes and sets have convinced me that this kbs team is the best in korea...i'm glad that the drama is getting the recognition it deserves.

This was my first Korean drama, so I have a soft spot for it. Good for her having success outside of Korea. I too hope she comes back to the TV screen soon!

Well, Hwanh Jin Yi was one of my favorites as well.
I re-watch it occasionally, i loved the gorgeus hanboks and all the dance scenes.
The music was nice as well.

Based on this article I just finished watching the series on Mysoju. I don' t think I've cried so much in a long time. It was slow and repetitive in spots, but what drama isn't, eh? Overall, she was a joy to watch. My favorite acting of hers will probably always be WHIBali. That whole series was like a yum sandwich. Over the top but delicious.

Ha Ji Won is the most beautiful and talented actress of Korea which I admire most. Her recent Secret Garden series was absolutely marvellous, she dares to bare her face to the minimum and she looks gorgeous with light make up on....thumbs up!
