Schedule cleared and absolute rest prescribed for Hyori

Following a post-concert collapse, pop singer Lee Hyori has canceled all her year-end activities. She had been found unconscious at home on the 26th and taken to a hospital.

She was found to be suffering from pneumonia and malnutrition, which follows a period of overwork as she spent two months rehearsing for her first solo concert(s) on the 19th and 20th, which she performed successfully despite fighting a cold. Such overwork was deemed the cause of her condition, and she was prescribed absolute rest.

That means she won’t be hosting year-end awards programs as planned, did she perform with Rain as had been hyped. She’s canceled early January CF shoots, as well as all other activities.

It’s becoming almost expected for singers to work themselves into a frenzy preceding big events, then collapse in the aftermath, like their bodies are seeking rest at the first opportunity. At least it didn’t happen in concert for Hyori. Unfortunately, when the stars themselves don’t know their own limits (and they push themselves, rather than being forced to by, say, management), these kinds of occurrences will only continue.

That is serious...I hope she gets plenty of rest. I wonder why she needed to push herself to this state. The korean overworked entertainers sound like they are all in-debt and need to work that much to pay back loansharks or something. I can understand if they don't have much time, for example, during drama filimings...that they need to work extra hard but self-imposed work (or torture) all the time is really puzzling.

I wonder if the entertainers earn more as variety show hosts/participants/guests than their day job as singers. Singers go on these shows so much. I've seen Hyori in quite a few variety shows. So in addition to her concert, she must have been doing all these variety shows as well. Though I don't enjoy her music or recent stage performances, she's a fun person to watch on variety shows. She's assertive and observant.

Anyways, It seems to me that in order for a singer to survive in Korea, you have to go on as many variety shows to have constant media exposure and then work yourself to death on your comedic/talking skills. Then, when you have already worked so much, try doubling that work by going onto music stages/music shows/radio programs. If you have not worked to the point of hospitalization then you don't have your seal of approval as a Korean multi-entertainer. Right after that, if an opportunity comes up for a CF or drama, grab it and work 5 times harder than before......voila, you are a now successful multi-entertainer.

I think she's very attractive but sometimes I hate the way she dresses ....like in this picture. The make up and the clothes are so tacky. She looks like a bimbo.

I think this singing&dancing&hosting-to-the-point-of-exhaustion phenomenon so common in Korea makes Rain's and other superstars' ability to put up with their crazy schedules and have long successful careers particularly impressive. They must be made out of kryptonite or something.

The reason they collapse from exhaustion is b/c they're all anorexic... try not eating and having enough energy to do what they're doing!!

It seems to some kind of work ethic in Korea, perhaps to do with those 12 hour work days, simply Koreans do not seem to know how Not to work, is grilled into them though school and they take it to the work place.
Also getting sick seems always to be the concerned persons fault somehow, as if they had a choice in getting sick or something, then when they try and work through it and end up like Lee Hyori, they get kicked for not taking care of themselves.
The old living legends like Rain and Jang Nara have both had the same thing happen to them but early on, so yes somehow after time you can learn just how much you can take body and mind, it is just a lot of the newer stars have to learn it the hard way.
I saw a very cute video with a young Jang Nara doing a concert tour, she clearly had a cold and was falling asleep almost standing up but still went on tell she collapsed and ended up in hospital, and this was with her papa as a manager. So there also must huge expectation for them to carry on no matter what, even to that point where their bodies can take it no longer

bjharm - no offense but more and more in recent years, 12-hour days are not that uncommon and extend beyond entertainers and Korea. Having worked through intense months at varying stretches, I agree with #8's rather blunt point (but not choice of word) re: eating properly and sufficiently to endure a hectic schedule and inadequate sleep. I also wonder how much of the "overwork" is driven by cultural desire to not let down sponsors, fans, teams, etc.?

this has nothing to do with the article, but Hyori kinda looks like Jessica Alba in that picture.
Not that there's anything wrong with Jessica Alba, but I think it kinda shows that Koreans adopt a western style of beauty which sort of bothers me - I mean, Koreans should look like Koreans! Koreans are beautiful in their own way
