2008 KBS Drama Awards

All right, we’ve seen MBC’s Acting Awards (met with much criticism) and SBS’s awards, so now we close out the broadcast station awards with the 2008 KBS Acting Awards.

No real surprise (or controversy) for KBS’s Daesang, awarded to veteran actress Kim Hye-ja for her role in the popular series Mom’s Dead Upset. Personally, I don’t know that Kim was outstanding in that drama specifically, but there’s no doubt she’s built up an impressive, long-running career and therefore this was probably more of an opportunity to give her a lifetime-achievement-ish Daesang.

WINNERS

Daesang: Kim Hye-ja (Mom’s Dead Upset)
Top Excellence (Actor): Song Il-kook (Kingdom of the Wind)
Top Excellence (Actress): Kim Ji-soo (Women in the Sun)

Daily Drama (Actor): Lee Pil-mo (You’re My Destiny)

New Actress: Yoon-ah (You’re My Destiny)

Popularity Award (Actress): Jang Mi-hee (Mom’s Dead Upset), Sung Yuri (Hong Gil Dong)
Young Actor: Lee Hyun-woo (Great King Sejong)

Special Drama/One-Act Drama (Actress): Park Min-young (Hometown of Legends)

Lifetime Achievement: Yoo Chul-joo, lighting director
Friendship Award: Lee Hyo-jung
Special Award: Samhwa Neworks CEO Shin Hyun-taek (Mom’s Dead Upset)

Choi Su-jong presents with and Han Ji-min:

Song Il-kook (Kingdom of the Wind) wins a Top Excellence award:

I really don’t get this dress-changing habit that some actresses have gotten into (and this is mid-ceremony, not red carpet to awards show). But no doubt Choi Jung-won (Kingdom of the Wind) looks lovely in both of her choices:

Because the acting awards were not handed out to everyone nominated, some of my personal faves like Kang Ji-hwan (Hong Gil Dong) were shut out of acting honors and relegated to categories like Netizen and Best Couple. (But he’ll surely have a long career, so that’s not too much of a disappointment.) He accepts here with Yoon-ah and Hong Gil Dong co-star Sung Yuri, who looks wonderful.

Oh, Jang Geun-seok (Hong Gil Dong), you were SO CLOSE! After that atrocity on the MBC awards carpet, you came in a sharp (men’s) suit and so very nearly pulled it together. But what. is. with. the. hair. (I think it’s cute he’s hugging Kang Ji-hwan, though.)

Okay, here’s the thing. Sung Yuri (Hong Gil Dong) is stunning, and she’s got fantastic makeup and hair (meh on the dress, but the overall look is lovely). HOWEVER…

…she looks almost exactly like Park Min-young! The Hometown of Legends star came wearing almost the exact same silhouette and rocked the same hair and makeup styling.

I didn’t catch much of Mom’s Dead Upset, but I do think Jang Mi-hee was hilarious and fully deserving of the acting nod.

Eom Ki-joon and Bae Jong-ok won for The World They Live In, which did not take many honors but a least acknowledged its two stronger actors:

At first I was a little confused seeing East of Eden pair Han Ji-hye and Park Hae-jin together, but then remembered that they both had roles in KBS daily dramas: Han in Likable or Not, Park in As Much as Heaven and Earth:

This makes two straight nights of looking fabulous and happy for Lee Yoon-ji (Great King Sejong):

Kim Ji-soo‘s (Women in the Sun) chocolate-brown gown looks great against her skin tone:

The dress is marginally better than the black one she chose for MBC’s yesterday, but that’s not the big concern: If Choi Kang-hee looked like she was flying high at SBS’s awards, Lee Hana (Women in the Sung) looks like she’s been dosed with horse tranquillizers. Eyes unfocused, dull expression — what is going on here?

Yoon-ah cries as she accepts for her role in You Are My Destiny:

Kim Jung-nan (You’re My Destiny); Kim Yong-gun with Mom’s Dead Upset co-star Jang Mi-hee:

Child actor winners Lee Hyun-woo (Great King Sejong) and Shim Eun-kyung (Women in the Sun). I think Shim is a cute up-and-comer, but she’s shown a tendency to dress a lot younger than befits her, contrary to most young starlets trying to dress too old. She doesn’t look bad, but it’s odd seeing a 14-year-old in a little-girl dress and Mary Janes.

Yoon Hee-seok, winner for special one-act drama:

Lee Pil-mo (You’re My Destiny); Lee Won-jong (Great King Sejong); Yoo Chul-joo, lifetime achievement winner:

I'm so disappointed that Kim Sang Kyung of Great King Sejong didn't win anything! He always gets shut out at awards.

I'm really happy for Lee Yoon-ji - she looks awesome as always.

I guess the third time IS the charm. Out of the three award shows, most of them looked great at this one.

I still got a chuckled in at Jang Geun-seok's look. He was all man neck down, and then a 3 year girl with a little pony tail, and big glasses. hehe, too funny

Kang Ji-hwan and Sung Yuri looks really good together! Too perfect... almost.

I can t really say if one deserve an award more than another one cos I drop the quasi totality of all dramas ..hmm..not all..in fact i still watch kingdom of the wind because of Song Il Kook. Personally I prefer him in a king costum than in a suit..hehehehehe..so gorgeous..

It must of been really embarrassing for Sung Yuri and Park Min Young. They look almost identical. But of course Sung Yuri pulls it off with much more elegence. I'm diappointed to see that Kang Ji Hwan didn't win anything but theres always next year. Jia-yo Hong Gil dong Cast!

Once you are over thirty you shouldn't do fur, too much bling bling and big hair. It's very aging and you end up looking like a dowager.

thank you javabeans. it's nice to read recaps instead of watching hours of the shows (a luxury at the end of year!)
somebody must be denying JGS entry at the doors: not outrageous enough! come back when you're Fruity! (he's turning into equivalent of odagiri jo, who shows up with outre ponytail/boho skirt-pants at awards:P )
lol @ horse tranquilizer comment. is lee hana that big?
kim ji-soo's either born perfect or pimping her latest skincare/lotion line :D

Happy to see Yoona being recognized along with the always notable Lee Pilmo and his tv wife Kim Jung-nan (who, together, were the best characters on the show) holding up the hardware after surviving the extended haul that began with great promise and fizzled due insipid writing; The emotionally exhausting daily You Are My Destiny. Yoona and the cast deserved a better script, but I enjoyed watching each of the veteran and new actors who, no doubt, grew as tired as the loyal viewers of this promising story that somehow became a broken record about 2/3 or the way through.

I'll say it again....Lee Yoon Ji has to be the prettiest, least appreciated, actress on the scene. She is always a delight to watch either in performance or just smiling beautifully on the red-carpet each year on the way to pick up her annual award.

After watching the opening music sequence, I knew the KBS award show was going to the best of the three. After watching Lee Yeon Hee singing in the MBC opening, I knew the MBC show was in trouble. Let's hope KBS can get some winners this coming year. Boys Before Flower looks good. I hope this series does not disappoint. But how can you ruin this story when the plot has been written out and done twice?

I found KBS (and SBS) awards better compared to the controversial MBC.
So happy my choices got the awards:
SIG for Top Male Excellence;
JJY for Excellence (Miniseries, Actor) - Hooray for Yuri Taewang!
and JGS for Popularity Award (Actor).

JAVA: I agree...JGS was so close! His men's suit was perfect (as compared to the other night) but the hair was like...uh oh. Lol.

Congratulations to all the winners! I think they all deserved their wins! ^^

Altho my fav KJH didn't win, I wasn't exactly that disappointed. He was nominated along with SO MANY veteran actors, and for him to have been in the list with them, it's already an honor... and plus, it's not like he lost or anything. He got the fans' votes! hehehhehe...

Out of all the awards shows, I loved the outfits the celebs wore here the most. They all looked really glamorous and sophisticated... esp the ladies, I almost wished I could have all their dresses. Lee Yoon Ji was the best looking one of the night, and to mention the others, like SYR, Park Min Young and Choi Jung Won... they took away the spotlight for me..

And for the guys, it's always and has always been Kang JI Hwan...<333

(* *) I happy about awards for Sung Yuri, She overcome Song Hye kyo to give it.
but Kang Ji Hwan haven't awards for his casting in drama HongGilDong.
Mbc awards with a most of awards belong to East of eden, Kbs is not.
I love Sung Yuri & with Awards she become a true actress. Waiting for you in drama '' The land of professionals'' with Ji Sung.
Kang Ji Hwan look old & thin. He is busy a movie with Kim Ha neul'' 7 GRADE CIVIL SERVANT''. hOPING he will success with awards in next year 2009!

@11, horse tranqs are really strong sedatives that some people abuse to get really wasted. i don't think it's a comment on her size.

thank god the other shows (sbs kbs) weren't as bad as mbc's lame excuse of an awards just to kiss east of eden's butt.

The only ones who do it are the award show MCs.

I am happy that both Kang Jihwan and Sung Yuri had an award. Although I was expecting that Kang Jihwan could get a major award for his good performance in Hong Gil Dong. Both of them truly deserved the best couple award for they really look good together. They really look stunning during the awards night. I just wish them both congratulation and I hope that they could do another good drama in the future. I am looking forward also to watching them in any upcoming dramas, be it in KBS or other production. More power.........
