U.S. remaking My Name Is Kim Sam-soon
by javabeans
My Name Is Kim Sam-soon (aka My Lovely Sam-soon), the super-popular 2005 drama that made Kim Sun-ah and Hyun Bin into household names, is being given the Hollywood treatment and remade as a U.S. television series. Hopefully Sam-soon will meet with better success as a remake than other Hollywoodified versions like My Sassy Girl and Il Mare (as The Lake House).
NBC will be producing the series as a prime-time drama, casting has been completed, with the script is in the revision process. Production is scheduled to begin early next year.
A few notes on the U.S. television process: just because a drama has entered production does NOT mean, as it does in Korea, that it will definitely air. The pilot will need to be shot, after which point the network can decide whether or not to order more episodes. If it dies in that stage, we’ll never see it, and if it proceeds, it will usually be given an initial 13-episode order, or half a season. (If the ratings are good, the back 9 episodes will usually be ordered to finish out the season. If ratings are bad, the series may be canceled at any point, whether or not all the produced episodes have been aired. There’s always a small chance that the drama will be picked up to series but canceled before any episodes air.)
Also, I actually heard about this a few months ago (in an unofficial capacity), and if the people involved in this remake are who I think they are, there’s a chance this series may turn out decently well. Also, considering that Samsoon was compared a lot to Bridget Jones’s Diary, the inherent premise of the series is one that translates well to Western audiences.

ahhh! why?! why must we crazy americans put our spin on things that are already very good as it is? i liked hyun bin and kim sun-ah and no matter how good the actors are i don't think it'll come across in the same way. >_<

I'm not keeping my hopes up that this will be amazing but I'm definitely looking forward to it anyway. I know it will never be the original, and I'm okay with that! I'm simply looking forward to seeing a retelling of one of my favorite dramas. There's no harm in seeing someone else interpretation and I might just like it.
I think of this like, though it's a way different situation, how the X men serious has so many different versions, all of which appeal to a different part of me and all of which I enjoy.

Needless to say, I'm dreading this. On principle, I am not against remakes. However, the recent spate of Hollywood remakes (My Sassy Girl, Il Mare) has been cringe-worthy to say the least.
And I agree with what a lot of people have said before me: a lot of the underlying themes of Kim Sam Soon will be lost in cultural translation. The idea that being unmarried at 30 is a tragedy will simply be inconceivable to Americans and that really is the driving force of the story at the beginning. And what about the hilarious blind date scenes where Hyun Jin Hun shows up to disrupt things? It will have to be removed because no one goes on arranged blind dates in America.
Also, the unconventional-ness of Kim Sam Soon will be lost on most American viewers. I mean, in Korea, this show was so popular because it moved away from the stereotypical Korean ideal: beautiful, quiet etc. For American viewers this will not be such a big deal.
You take away all these things and what are you left with: an older woman falling in love with her younger boss. Not much of a story, I would say.
And one of the reasons why I like Korean dramas is because I know exactly when the show is going to end. I hate how the Americans, when they see they got their hands on a good thing, they stretch it to death until you die of old age before finding out how it ends. I mean, look at Lost. It was a good premise but really should have been finished off with one season.
Another great fear of mine is that they will take the main premise of the story and butcher it to death like they did with Ugly Betty. They took what was a special romantic drama and turned it into some slapstick comedy/freak show. Sex-changes, people coming back from the dead, etc. Basically, they got everything in there except the true story: an unattractive woman who wins the guy through her intelligence and kindness instead of her good looks. I shut my eyes in horror after the first few episodes and refused to watch.

I'm interested to see what they do with this. Hopefully the casting will be good. (I'm hoping they'll have at least one Asian lead, I'd like to see more Asian-American stars get out there).
They remade the movie 'Addiction' to into a movie called 'Possesion' I think. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace. I love Lee Pace, don't know about Sarah.
Anyways, hope it turns out well. ^^

I agree with pulpo(tako). Stupid americans... When i watched Samsoon here(South Africa) i really loved it. It was confusing at first because of the culture differences but i got the hang of it after a while. It's definitely one of my all time fav dramas now and im scared of what they are gona do to KSS. And americans dont know what they want coz now they've decided to shelve ugly betty for a while! I mean thats almost like deciding to cancel it. And i like betty :(. Ill watch the pilot but im not keeping my hopes up.

Why do they have to mess with something that is already good! I live in America and I hate AmericanTV. Americanizing a Korean drama will take away the interesting aspect of culture and replace it with dumb American comedy (which is usually very unintelligent). I wont be holding my breathe for this release to come out.

oh my my.
MNIKSS was a really good drama, one of the best ones i've seen
if hollywood remakes it, im gonna kill them cause:
1. they never make good remakes meaning..
2. the remake of MNIKSS will FAIL and
3. the drama is excellent EXACTLY as it is.
american shows are just plain stupid, and they really don't interest me that much, but that doesnt mean that hollywood should try copying a masterpiece, right?

why can't they just show the original on an American network instead of wasting money on this. That's a good idea, air it on a popular network, that anyone can watch, and call it Asian Drama Nite?

AZN TV was a digital cable network in the USA that was taken off the air about a year and a half ago, because of low viewership (Well of course! One had to pay an additional fee to the basic cable fee in order to have access to this and other digital TV channels). It was through this network that I started to watch Asian shows (some with English subtitles, others without them) and became a fan of them.
There is a big need (and a growing public) that would watch a channel that would carry Asian programs. Unfortunately, too many people are lazy and don't want to read subtitles (they don't know that this makes them smarter).
Networks want to milk the cow till they make it dry, that why many show that were good at first, soon became stale.
A lot of Asian hits do not translate well to American because they loose their charm and originality in the translation in order to make it more appealing to the US audience. Il Mare was a little film that got a makeover and became Lake House. (Sandra Bullock has become the new producer of much wanted romantic comedies). It may not have been a blockbuster, but it was decent and most people who have seen it have liked it. The rest have not been so lucky.
There is a big market for romance (ask the publishing companies that make a lot of money with romance novels in the US and their authors). But movies need to appeal also to guys, so they sacrifice the romance or make silly superficial, predictable romantic chick flicks, that guys runs from them like the devil.
It's a known fact the directors, producers in the US watch a lot of Asian films and have been inspired by them and are starting to bring some of the talent to the US. Let's wish LBJ. Rain, and others a lot of luck so that more talent and films, and TV series become mainstream in the US.

Glad it's 2 years later and nothing yet..
MNIKSS is like..a little piece of heaven for me.
That's what K-dramas are..a completely different world for me..and place to get away..
I don't want that broken into and tampered with.
It's like my own little secret. And I'm jealous and greedy. I don't want to share it. Especially my Kim Sun-Ah.
Those lucky enough to get into K-dramas know what I mean..
And I think we all know, NO ONE, not anywhere, not ever..could pull off Kim Sam Soon the way Kim Sun Ah did.
And even Sun Ah said if she had to do it a second time, it just wouldn't be the same.
They can take anything else! Any other drama (though I prefer not)
just not my Samsoon.
Anything but that.
Please.

Three years and nothing yet so I guess we can agree that they decided it was an awful idea and didn't ruin Sam Soon. Yay!

I'm totally lurking and 4yrs later I think it's safe to say this did not and will not come to fruition. Im always weary about crossovers. And it makes me wonder how Saturday Night Live Korea is doing.
