An Exclusive Party with Lee Dong-wook
by javabeans
Lee Dong-wook, just coming off his recent dark drama La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life), has been invited as a special VIP guest at the upcoming Bangkok International Film Festival, which takes place from the 23rd through 30th. However, as one of eighteen VIP guests, he represents the Hallyu world not on the basis of his recent drama work but an older series, the 2006 SBS trendy drama My Girl. Interestingly enough, while the other seventeen guests were invited on the basis of their movie work, Lee was the only one invited for a drama series.
In addition to walking the VIP red carpet, he’ll be holding his own fanmeeting and press conference, hosting his “Exclusive Party with Lee Dong-wook” on September 27.
A representative from his management company explained, “Because the drama My Girl and the film Arang were big hits in Thailand, Lee Dong-wook has a lot of fans there. As a result of holding one to two fanmeetings there, his interaction with his fans has made him popular.”

I'd imagine LDW has somewhat mixed feelings about this. While its great to get recognition for your work and positive reactions from your fans, it must also be a little disappointing that his more recent work has registered so little if he is still only getting plaudits for My Girl. Or maybe he doesnt care and he is laughing all the way to the fanmeeting/bank.... :)

Yeah. My guess is that he rolls his eyes and thinks, "Well, at least my frilly girly dramas got me popular enough to do more interesting work." I wonder if he'll dip back into popular stuff every now and then to "register" on the mainstream radar, or if he'll keep on his current trajectory and stick to edgier material.

I would hope he would do both. If only that The Sweet Life just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm all for the edgier drama now and then, but man. That one just had...issues. But on the bright side, I get to wake up, and see his gorgeous face on your blog. Hurrah!

He looks tired. He could use some ramen or energy bar. I bet he's going to need a lot of energy on Sept. 27

I was not a big fan of Lee Dong-wook before La Dolce Vita. But now I can say he's a very good actor thanks to this drama. Like the 3 others leads actors he is amazing in La Dolce Vita. I hope he will choose another strong drama and not a cheesy drama like My Girl because he don't need to wast his time and his talent.
I mean, what he's most proud? His character in My Girl or his character in La Dolce vita? I'm pretty sure it's the second one.

Ishida, I think he needs both, actually. True, he's probably most proud of La Dolce Vita, but he owes most of his current success as a Hallyu star (and his popularity in Asia is probably greater than it is domestically) to My Girl. It gave him much more visibility than he could've gotten on LDV alone.
I think it's fine for actors to recognize which projects are higher in artistic value, but they'd do well not to alienate what made them successful, either. He shouldn't bite the hand that feeds him, so to speak. (It isn't to say that everyone should strive for visibility, but it's nothing to sneer at, either.) Anyway, that's my take.
