Artist profile and free giveaway: OLDFISH
by javabeans
All right, new Dramabeans game! Based on several suggestions made in my recent song repost thread, I’m trying out the idea of profiling some indie/underrated Korean musicians outside the sphere of general kpop music, with songs and background information and such as. I don’t know how often I’ll do these, but hopefully I can manage a semi-regular system.
But how to make it more fun? Add FREE STUFF, of course.
So today I’m picking one of my favorite indie artists, Oldfish, and throwing in a FREE GIVEAWAY. I’m giving away FOUR FREE CDs of the Acoustic Movement album. You can listen to a few tracks below the cut.
The rules?
Leave a comment. Be sure to leave your email address (won’t be visible to the public) so I can contact winners. You can comment as many times as you like, but you’ll only be entered once to win.
I’ll post up the winners next Friday (is a week too long?), and keep an easy-peasy link/notice up at the right sidebar.

WHO IS OLDFISH?
Oldfish is the name of a one-man band, at whose helm is Soda, the man behind the vocals, keyboards, producing, lyrics, mixing, and pretty much everything else.
Currently signed with indie label Pastel Music, Oldfish got his start on the Seoul music scene by performing live regularly. He gained notice starting in 2003 from his live club shows in the Hongdae neighborhood, and released four mini-albums before his first full-length was released.

SOUNDS LIKE
The music spans several different genres, self-described as similar to Shibuya-kei and electronic lounge music, but also incorporating elements of modern rock and folk. Call it indietronica, folktronica, folk rock — what it amounts to is warm, soothing melodies mixed with a hint of fancy.
Soda explains his musical tastes and appreciates the comparison he receives to Norwegian band Kings of Convenience, of whom he is a fan: “I listen to a variety of music genres. Shoegazer, guitar pop, folk, world, everything except heavy metal. In the early days of Oldfish I wanted to create a new kind of music with folk and electronic sounds. Personally, I really enjoy Kings of Convenience a lot.”
Also sounds like: The Postal Service, The Notwist, Fortune Cookie, Roller Coaster.
Several images that Oldfish has adopted as its icons are the paper robot, sheep, and clouds, as seen on the album covers, as well as a flashing lightbulb. One could say that the whimsy in the imagery associated with the band translates into the gentle, comfortable sounds of the music — not particularly provocative, perhaps, yet showcasing its own brand of diversity: Its placid indie-folk surface belies its energetic undercurrent. The sound is anchored by light electronic beats that keep the pace lively without dragging down the atmospheric, spare quality of the music.

DISCOGRAPHY:
March 2003: The Oldfish mini-album
August 2003: 귀를 기울이는건 달님입니다 [The Moon Listens Intently] mini-album
February 2004: Fairy Tale mini-album
December 2004: 1-3 mini-album
September 2005: room.ing, first full-length album, 2-CD
January 2007: Acoustic Movement, second full album
The mini-albums were sold throughout 2003 and 2004 mainly at live shows and over the internet. Unavailable now, Soda would like to re-release them at some point. There’s apparently also an omnibus album with an English band released in England in 2006.

ORIGIN OF OLDFISH
The name: “Consider evolution, which is described as the advancement of new things due to curiosity and scientific progress. However, can you call it true evolution when humans give in to their own desires and become cruel? Rather than heading in that direction, could we consider a fish with the mere memory capacity of three seconds who’d given up on that kind of evolution to be a more evolved organism than a human? It was out of those kinds of musings that the name arose.”
Soda initially got his start in music in a school band during his high school days, acting as its vocalist. He’d cultivated his musical sensibilities in a “small but pretty town” in Gyeongsangnam-do called Jinju. Though smaller than Seoul or Busan, the area was host to many fans of rock music — they even held a Rock and Roll Korea festival — and he’d had many musician friends there. After he began performing as Oldfish in 2003, his main stomping grounds became the Hongdae area.
THE FUTURE
Soda: “I don’t want to stay only in Korea, but would love to perform all over the world. I think it would be a shame if Korea didn’t produce the kinds of bands that can perform and sell albums in many other countries.”
Music video for “Dot dot dot”:
And there you have it: Oldfish. Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners — or if you don’t want to wait, go ahead and buy Oldfish’s second album “Acoustic Movement” at YesAsia.

Very contemplative music that sooths at the same time. These songs would be great to listen to on the to and from hour train rides from school. Stop thinking about maximising future career choices and just stop to appreciate everything that is around us type of music.
My lonely disc man which is sitting next to my now much too frequently used ipod would sure love to play some new tunes! It was quite a surprise to find out that you were giving away some freebies! I love the songs that you put up although not all of them are to my style. You've just recently gotten me listening to Monday Kiz songs cause of their song from your earlier post.
good luck people!
may the best postee win

hey javabeans! i totally agree to what nr. 24 "Amy" says, plus: i like the mix of the guittar and the synthesized sound. their music remind me of lazy sunday mornings, really relaxing :) and some tracks could even be quite "dance-able" (if mixed correctly). i think you posted the track "way to home" previously in some older posts? really like it!

Love Oldfish - ever since I started reading your blog I've been listening to a lot of new music. Your site is a lot better than most music blogs I usually visit because you change it up a lot. Anywho, cool idea, hope this new thing works out well for you and doesn't become stressful or anything.
I think my favorite track already is "lets go together". It's kind of sad, with a tinge of regret and hopefulness. Times like these I wish I knew Korean... any chance you'd be posting

Hmm I'm really impressive with Oldfish or Soda O-O? that's talent right there! he make his own songs basically and sings it too lol of course ;D.
Dot Dot Dot -- hmm i very cute song even though i dun knw wat it means ^^"
A Day -- seems every happy like a nice relax hanging out song ^^
Let's go on a ride -- this is also a cute song and relaxing ^^
that's cool! Jinju i mean lol because it sounds like a place where you can hang out with your friends and go to concerts ;D. I have to disagree with what the people say about his albums cover. when i look at the cover at the first time the robot remind of a lil child walking like that lol, and the color makes it looks soo innocent like childhood :). also about wat Soda said he wants his songs to be all around the world. i have to agree, because even though we speak in different languages, music is something that everyone can related too ^^
HWAITING OLDFISH!! & Thank You Javabeans to share those awsome songs~

hi Javabeans
am enjoying the songs you put up - thank you!
i don't understand korean (tho am attempting to learn it..slowwwwwly), but have enjoyed getting to know more of the indie pop songs you put up - i think we may have similar indie interests, haha. i always enjoy the music you have here - thanks to you i'm now going thru the Soumates OST...
its almost impossible for me to get k-indie things in my country, but the first time i heard something that sounded almost like what i usually listen to was when i heard the que sera sera soundtrack - it literally stopped me in my tracks. and then i started emailing my friends about korean bands that sounded like KOC and jose gonzalez. and even B&S and camera obscura!! (my second shock was listening to the coffee prince unofficial soundtrack and almost falling off my chair when i heard the wannadies).
hope to be able to get to hear the Oldfish album and hearing more good stuff! =)
cheers

"A Day" is like waking up on a sunny morning after a rainy night and wanting to stay in bed (like it!) "Movement, Dot Dot Dot" reminds me of those videos that shows people moving in the streets either busy for work/school or just crossing the streets (just fine) "Riding on the Wind" for me was cool, it makes you feel as the title says (Love it!) I think more of his music as cool, light and easy yet not boring. Am not into slow kind of techno music but his' just got the right pace. I hope he would have some mix on his other albums because i usually tire of listening to the same beat recycled over time when artists tend to live on their signature work and get stuck with it.

I must say I used to listen american indie music before so this isn't outside the realm of my musical universe. Then we started watching dramas and then started listening to K-music. I think we have very similar taste in indie music. It's getting to the point where I can't remember which group is Korean or US origin until I actually listen to the song. It's probably one of the reasons I like Korean music as oppose to other Asian music..rambling on .. I guess you could be considered part of my Korean musical roots.. heh heh .. cheers.

Before reading your posts, I like to hit play and then continue to read while listening to the song of the day :) It's like a small gift for me every time I read a new post because the song will be something that I've never listened to before, and it'll be something I could listen to and enjoy regardless of my mood^^. It's like ... a small breath of fresh air ....
All that seems to be on the radio nowadays is stuff from mainstream media. I'd request songs from "new" artists I'd discover from your site when I'd be listening to the radio on the 'net.... It's like I want to share my great find with everyone else~
Your entries are always entertaining, smart, substantial, and thought-provoking - makes for a good read when I'm trying to procrastinate, hehe~ Thanks for reading!

Hi!
Thank you for the post and update on Oldfish.
After listening to it their brand music runs on smooth flow of the sound that can make you relax and take a sip of coffee and even wine.
I would like to imagine myself listening to their songs while sipping wine in a hotel bar or lounge, with people just enjoying their time in quiet while listening to their tracks.
