The 2007 Korean Film Awards
by javabeans
On December 1, stars gathered in Seoul for the 6th Annual Korean Film Awards, honoring the latest achievements in (what else?) Korean cinema.
Notable among its winners were the multiple talents behind one of Korea’s most critically acclaimed films of the year, Secret Sunshine — which won raves at Cannes Film Festival, where its also won its star, Jeon Do Yeon, the top acting honor.
Take a look at the winners and attendees after the jump…

Not having seen many of the films named, I’m not a good judge of whether the awards are indicative of the most deserving films. Although, I will say that any award that gives Daniel Henney AND Song Hye Gyo acting honors makes me naturally a little suspicious… (In case you’re wondering, despite Song Hye Gyo’s numerous years in the entertainment industry, she qualifies for the “New Actress” category because she’s new to film.)
(Before I offend all the Daniel Henney and Song Hye Gyo apologists out there, I don’t mean to say they weren’t deserving of ANY recognition for their respective projects, for which both actors have been noted as having shown improvement. But enough to WIN an acting award? Showing “an improvement” from Seducing Mr. Perfect and Full House doesn’t necessarily speak volumes.)
(Let it also be known that I hate Daniel Henney’s blue-on-blue-on-black matchy-matchy suit. Bleh.)

In attendance at the awards ceremony…
I don’t really care about fashion or whatnot, so I won’t really comment on how people look except to say: people pretty.
Some notable attendees:
I don’t have a strong opinion on Kim Hye Soo, but I kinda think her duck-butt hair-flip is adorable.
How dapper:
I’m not familiar with either actress, but I like how their dresses both feel kinda old-fashioned with the volume, but have a modern twist, particularly the updated-hanbok style on the right:
Kim Min Sun, Kim Hyeon Sook, Hyun Young
Award winner Song Kang Ho (“Secret Sunshine”), director Shim Hyung Rae (“D War”)

I've always felt that the Awards choices in Korea were a bit more lax than in some other countries. I mean, Daniel Henney? But all that aside, I think it was great. The dresses were pretty and from the pictures, I particularly loved Kim Ah Joong's dress. Kim Tae Hee's dress was my favorite, but in my opinion, a bit too short for the Korean Film Awards.
I'm pretty sure the ladies at PopSeoul are already tearing into the dresses right now.

But then again, seeing the other cocktail dresses makes me take back my comment about Kim Tae Hee's dress. How formal are the Korean Film Awards?
The cocktail dresses were really cute. ^_^

Jane, no doubt, and I totally leave that to them, since that's what they're good at. I just like looking at pretty pictures.
It's interesting how different focuses (and the different way images are framed) elicit totally differing opinions. I chose my pics, for instance, based on lighting and angles more than the fashion, which I admit is always kind of the last criteria for me. I love the backlighting for Kim Ah Joong and Lee Hana, the dark-bright contrast with Lee Yeon Hee, the tilted angle for Han Chae Young... It wasn't till after I posted everything that I realize you can't really see the clothes all that well, haha.

True, I've noticed that most of your picture have great lighting and almost always clearly picture the person well with great colors. Seeing as this site isn't mainly for fashion, I can understand your priorities.
Bravo. ^_^

honestly, i like the dress styles here better than from the blue dragon. i love sohn ye jin's look at the blue dragon's more. kim tae hee looks much better in the blue dragon for me.. or is it the picture? i love kim ah joong's. lee yeon hee's was pretty that color. lee hana was looking good too minus the hat. han chae young's look was stylish. loving jo in sung ( he seems to have lost weight), and ji hyun woo (the scarf was eh.. but he's adorable still), jang geun sook too. i usually like jung kyung ho but he looks bleh in the pic that look is not for him. cho seung woo looks older and harassed.
to the award winners.. the major ones i feel deserve it..
to the new ones.. well i think daniel henney is good looking and all, but i didnt like his look here plus id want to have someone else win the new best actor. to song hye gyo sorry to all her fans, but her portrayal of hwang jin yi wasnt that great too me to merit the award.

The ladies and the dresses look beautiful. But I always wonder when I see these ladies at the award show...here in the US and abroad...aren't they cold? I am in LA, which should be warmer than S. Korea, and I am all bundled up. Looking at them, you would think it is summer time, LOL, thank god I am not in their shoes, I would probably catch pneumonia.

I saw 'Tazza' last night, and it was really not my cup of tea. Don't like it.
I avoided to watch 'Hwang Jin Yi' because a friend told me she fell asleep while watching it, and I'm not big fan of SHG, so I won't miss it anyway.
I do interested to 'My Father', and knowing Henney won an award for it, I really want to watch it.
From the list of nominees, the other movie I want to see is 'Love/Sarang' of Jo Jin Moo, and all because of him! :P
For the outfits, I like Jeon Do Hyeon's dress, and Jo In Sung's suit. Classic.
Hey, why you don't post Kim Myung Min's picture? He came with Son Hye Jin, rite? Are they working on a project together? ( I saw that these people came with a date of their current/last project's partner..correct me if I'm wrong..)

I cannot believe that Song Hye Gyo won an award for Hwang Jini. It was a snoozefest up to the end. Her portrayal was just plain dry.

I thought I was the only one who fell asleep during Hwang Jini. Phew! I don't feel like such an uncultured oaf now. I much preferred the TV drama and can understand why Ha Ji Won got awards for that ... but Song Hye Gyo? Er ... next some bright spark will try to put her and Daniel Henney in a movie together ...

Lee Young Eun's dress looks like and Andre Kim creation and Oh Jung Hye's dress looks like a really cool hanbok. How did they sit in those?! I liked them though.
I must see Daniel Henney's movie. I cant possibly see him being best actor so I wanna see how much he's improved. And SHK, I have to watch Hwang Jin I too. I thought she was cute in Fullhouse but never would think of her as a serious actor.

I don't know about Daniel Henney..but I read a couple of reviews on his latest movie MY Father, and most of them comprised of praises for Daniel Henney's acting. I saw a short preview of the movie, and there was this part of Daniel Henney crying and shouting out loud, I thought it was very nicely portrayed altho it was just a brief glance. It was a totally different portrayal as compared to his performance in Seducing Mr Perfect. (he was just HOT inside the movie).. but I think, maybe he did deserve that Best New Actor award.. afterall, you don't judge by just one movie you've seen right? Lee Jun Ki has only made one movie, The King and the Clown, and look where it's got him..

Actually I believe Lee Junki has made at least six films... Looking up his filmography, he's been in King and the Clown, Virgin Snow (the Japanese-Korean collab), May 18 (Splendid Holiday), Fly Daddy, Hotel Venus, and Ballet School.
But I agree that one movie doesn't define you. I started watching My Father before I got bored and stopped (I'll probably pick it up later) and I wasn't too impressed. Daniel Henney's acting is much improved but I wouldn't say it's there yet. He's not what you call nuanced or layered. He's very straightforward -- you can tell exactly which one emotion he's going for at a time. When he learns to convey complexity, well, THEN he may be deserving of an award. (I still hate the suit.)

I've only watched two of the movies nominated and am very pleased that both won awards:
Radio Star (Best Music)
Paradise Murdered (Best Supporting Actor, Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Lighting)
I'm slightly bummed that Park Hae Il wasn't nominated for Paradise Murdered but then again I watched only 1/2 of the movie before I got too spooked and had to stop. Btw, I see 200 Pounds Beauty and I'm A Cyborg But That's OK in the stores all the time but have never felt compelled to pick up either of them. Should I?
King and the Clown was Lee Junki's third movie.

Beans beans...haha..thank you for correcting me. I must do more research before replying..hehehe..
Well maybe it's just that I have not seen him in My Father, and I have no particular dislike towards him or his acting, so I just try my best not to judge him just based on one movie I've seen of him.
And yeah..the suit doesn't look good on him..

thanks. I love SHG, like I think she's awesome! As a model, but I don't like her as an actress in her previews movies and dramas. I just like her in Full House and Hwang Ji Ni, even though in some parts in Hwang Ji Ni, she could've done better. lol.
I LOVE Daniel Henney too, I agree with you too, I don't like his matching blue tux and tie. lol.
OMG! I think that red modern hanbok or something is pretty cool! hahaha.
Thakns a lot dramabeans.

ha ha ha ha.... Song Hye Gyo a "new" actress ?!? Give me a break. I agree, she needs to improve her skills, but is easy on the eyes. Now, what can I say about Daniel Henney? Not enough days left in the century for this mactor to improve. Eye candy for the ladies, but empty calories. lol.

Jeon Do Yeon certainly brings some class and sparkle to the event. She really looks like a glamourous movie star and deserves the best actress award for her intense performance in Secret Sunshine. I think she raised the bar for Korean actors and showed the world that Korea is coming into it's own in terms of movie making talent. Also, Korean actresses aren't just fluff, but they can act too.

no.13 I agree with you, I prefer the TV version better, espescially in terms of acting.
I often think that SHG gets a lot of perks because of her beauty. Do I think she deserves this award? in all honesty, NO.
