Countdown to Gong Yoo’s military enlistment

After repeatedly pushing back the date of his mandatory service enlistment, everyone’s beloved Coffee Prince Gong Yoo finally has an official date marking the start of his service. You can start your tearful countdowns now: He joins on January 14, 2008. More specifically, at 1pm on the 14th, when he begins initial five-week training, after which he’ll enter active duty (20 months).

As a last hurrah before leaving the entertainment world for the next two years, Gong Yoo can celebrate his current nominations for MBC’s year-end acting awards, under the outstanding actor category for Coffee Prince, as well as the most popular male award selected by netizens, and best couple along with co-star Yoon Eun Hye. (Yes, a lot of these are purely vanity handouts “awarded” by networks to keep their shiny stars/moneymakers happy, but I’m sure it must be exciting all the same.) The awards show will take place in Seoul on December 30.

Is that a picture from his sold-out Japanese calendar? Nevermind, saw the Korean writing - can't quite make out the bottom line, though, except for Gong Yoo. It does look like March of 2008. He will be missed...

Catchy song.

Given the popularity of Coffee Prince he's sure to get the "Best Couple" award with Yoon Eun Hye... Too bad though I thought the best couple was more deserved by Lee Jung Jin and Soo Ae in 9 End 2 Outs...
For the rest you can't really know! MBC had a really busy year with lots of great projects, best actor to me should go to Lee Jun Ki for Time between Dog and Wolf but I guess that Bae Yong Joo must be nominated for The Legend so sure loss. I mean you can't win against experience and a huge fan base... However if I were to choose, I'd choose according to how the performance was like compared to the challenge it represented instead of looking only at the popularity of the face or the drama the actor has been acted in. I mean, acting in a comedy is certainly not the most difficult thing for an actor especially since Gong Yoo - pardon me fans - has always acted in the same kind of roles. I loved him in One Fine Day... gave up recently Hello my Teacher. But well always the same type of role honest. I'm not saying it's bad, but I mean as an actor don't you wish to challenge yourself and reach height in your art?

Well I'm not what you can call a fan of any actor, there's some actors I really enjoy watching such as Lee Jun Ki ( King and the Clown, My Girl, Time Between Dog and Wolf), Ji Seong ( Save the Last Dance for Me - Terms of Endearment - currently starring in New Heart) or Choi Soo Jong ( Emperor of the Sea - Dae Jo Yeong, but you can't really say I'm a fanatic. I actually found it lucky there's a bunch of actors leaving next year. That means it will let new faces pop up, or actors I like only getting secondary roles a better position. I'm crossing my fingers so that 2008 will be an awesome year for Korean dramas as was 2007.

Im not a fan of Gong Yoo either but he definitely deserves the outstanding award and not because of the popularity of coffee prince..one of the reasons why coffee prince was so popular was the great acting by the whole cast and Gong Yoo put everything into his role...its rare you find such dedicated actors and its a great loss for him to go to the military at the prime of his career.

Haven't been enjoying a drama from beginning to end for couple of years. I picked 'Coffee Prince' for I like this line of plot - a girl pretending to be a boy and then falling for a guy. Don't know why, I just love this kind of stories... Many cultures have such stories, from Chinese 'Butterfly Lovers' (BTW, I'm Chinese) to American movies.

Because of CP, I found this awesome blog of yours.

Because of CP, I dug up K-dramas and movies by Gong Yoo and found most of them quite enjoyable.

At least he has impressed viewers with awesome acting before he goes for the military. I'll definitely miss him. Looking forward to his comeback 2 years later.

Kinda agree with La Plume, though i think Gong Yoo's finer acting moments in CP were in those non-romantic non-comedic scenes. There were flashes here and there which suggested that he maybe is a better actor than the roles that he took on in the past. Han Gyul was his breakthrough role i think.

Looking forward to seeing some new faces to fill the void. I'm actually curious about Iljimae - the Lee Seung Gi's version - a 20-year old ballad singer with very limited acting experience tackling the leading role of a historical drama? Hmm.

I agree with his excellent acting!
But whyis there still a thing such as military service?! No offense to the korean gov, but still, 20 months!!! isn't it too long? I say let's all just live in peace, love and kdrama! : )
Just as Pixie, I found this blog when watching Coffee Prince. Thanks again for the summaries! now I come daily to catch up with yuour news, every though everything does not interest me.

Gosh. The guy'll be missed.

Seriously, I loved him in CP. Acting in a comedy is actually harder than it may appear. Even more so when the role is as nuanced as Han Gyul's who does not only provide comic relief, but also brings out the emotional punches. For the fact that he made that character more than a dandified heart-throb he deserves every award he can get. I'm more inclined to give credit to an actor who actually makes a fictional character seem natural and approachable than to a so-called thespian who actually just goes with the flow of the story without bringing anything new or even spontaneoous to the role.
The quiet, introspective scenes are eclipsed by the peppy humorous ones, but in my opinion they're what makes CP so special and not merely an escapist crowd-pleaser you forget as soon as you've finished watching it.

Also, after watching CP, I was all "yeah, YEH is awesome, but Gong Yoo would have chemistry with a doorknob"... and then I remembered I had hated his character in One Fine Day and I'd actually wanted the lead girl to end up with the other guy while GY went and got a haircut. So yeah, it does take two to tango.

It’s really sad that almost all the great actors are leaving for the military in 2008. I will surely miss watching them (especially Eric Mun and Gong Yoo!) But 20 months is not that long…..it’s too looooooooong! Well, just take care, stay healthy and comeback soon! Btw, I really love your site! Thanks!

:( he will be missed. i was one of the many who was hoping that his enlistment would never come. i agree with many here that he made CP awesome. his and yeh's chemistry was so good. also, dramabeans, your summaries of CP sealed the deal for me actually watching CP and then other kdramas and works of GONG YOO. so now i am obsessed. thanks, hehehe...i love reading your site, i love your sense of humor.
20 months is so long, but i do hope that he does win some awards so that before he enlists he will know that he was appreciated.

I still cannot really fathom how good an actor he is. I've only watched him in ONE DAY FINE...........Not sooo really impressed yet. Gosh..........All those pretty good actors gonna be in army uniform soon. What a huge void in K-entertainment!
