You be the judge: Lee Da Hae’s single

Well, you’ve seen the photos, you’ve heard about the song, and maybe you’ve seen the clips of her video. But now you can listen to both versions of the Lee Da Hae rendition (Korean and English) of the song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and judge for yourselves.

As for me, I wouldn’t say it’s awful… It’s certainly not as awkward as the video.

She sounds… very nasal and whiny, and holds JUST enough of a tune that you can see why people thought Lee Da Hae had enough ability to put out her own single. (I think they were overshooting.)

(It also suggests that despite her schooling in Australia, she’s not fluent in English, which I’ve suspected for a while. Her pronunciation’s better than the average Korean, but it seems she’s trying to compensate for her deficiency by mumbling — I can’t even really tell the English version is in English. Which is why I think the Korean version is far better, even if they sound almost the same when you’re not trying to understand the lyrics.)

Let’s hope she sticks to acting. She’s actually pretty good at it.

Okay from personal first time experience with the song "rock and roll" the American version...evenI have trouble getting in all the word. I wont put the word "Mumbling" as to describe LDH's singing (american version). Give her some credit is all im saying...because i actually understood what she was saying.
Beside that...i definitely agree that her voice isnt strong enough for this song....nor is she GREAT! But oh well. haha...still love her as a actress. I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL TOO!! ^____^

For me, definitely there is little difference between her English version of song "I Love Rock n' Roll" to that of the Korean version, though its her prerogative to switch interests, I would rather see her as an actress!

Lol ripgal I didn't felt offended by your comment so sorry if I sounded aggressive ^^ Yep doesn't make her any different that's true. But again like I said she's talented enough she doesn't need that. Dunno who decided to make the MV this way, or her agent or whatever but if you really respect the star you're working with, you should know she/he can pull it through without ressorting to this. By the way she didn't sound better in the recording for me, but she's still nice and cute. She did seem to try hard, that's too bad.

And yeah rebeca when you say

"The reason why i stated that in my last reply was because everyone was almost trying to say that since LDH didn’t have great pronounciation, it meant she wasn’t fluent in teh language….and that is simply not the truth….you can be fluent while having an accent."

I agree, I haven't said the contrary lol. My parents have learnt french at school, they're fluent, they don't even have an accent but sometimes when they get angry and they still speak in french, you can hear the strong african accent it's funny :D

Ok peace everyone I'm still looking forward to her next drama "Robber", it will probably help me forget "Hello Miss" and that MV. That's two deceptions I had surely there won't be a third one?

Has to be counting on the MV to sell her song, while not racy in western terms, her outfit is still rather sexy.
No harm done, if she wanted to just have a go for fun and not try and become an actress/singer. For another Jang Nara she certainly is not.

lol...they should have used protools. Whoever edited the sound/sound engineer should be fired. Reverb, pitch correction and sound fx can cover it up(drowning out, nasal tone or the growl [or is it meow :)] )and it will be more fun to hear.
Thank God she's not tone deaf because there's no way you can fix that.

Joan Jett dead?.....that was funny hahahah

you can watch her speak both english and chinese here. I think her english is fine =p. As for the accent it's not exactly Australian accent but what I would call Asian Australian accent. I'm originally from Malaysia where I speak english as my primary language but have worked in England for the past four years and I can tell you although I'm fluent in English, can speak with an accent if I choose to, it's still wouldn't be James Bond english sounding. Asians tend to speak much faster so to European or American or Australian counterparts we might sound like we are mumbling. I tend to forget sometimes and get a "speak up mate" in my ear. However in general asians will adapt after awhile and learn to speak slower and clearer. Hope this clears up this accent and fluency issue a lot of non-asian born people have(not meant to me racist comment). Thank you.

^ she sounds like a FOB. It's not a bad thing, but she's not fluent, you can tell.

she's definitely not fluent, and it's most obvious when she's singing "He smiled so I got up and’ asked for his name" it's her pronunciation that bugs me. it's weird when she pronounce words like "asked". i love her acting much much much more than her singing. her voice itself is a little too nasal. my korean classmate speaks much better english.

Hmm i just think there's justice in this world.. Thank goodness that her singing is not that good.. I mean can you imagine.. she is already freaking beautiful, great actress, and then you want to add great singer to that list.. man she needs a flaw and i think we can safely say we found it! whew.. the rest of the women population rest. I hope she does another drama soon and show off that great acting skills of hers plus I need a new show to obsessed about since Coffee Prince I feel I am at a lost in my drama series.

Here's a link to the original 1975 "I love rock n roll" by The Arrows.
They wrote it.

I really like Lee Da Hae's version too.
She's great! Pretty, talented, and she rocked the house!

Haha, this thread makes me think of that episode of "Goong" where the rich kids and whatshername are making fun of Yoon Eun Hye's character in English...oh, la vache! It was...wow. Not TEEEEERRIBLE, but for me, who's kind of a stickler when it comes to pronunciation in any language, it was pretty damn bad (you see, even if I can't speak a language well, I can at least fake it...that is, I can pronounce most words pretty well).

Anyway, Gramps: "So English speakers think they’re saying “coffee” and bewildered Koreans hear something more like “nose bleed”."

That all depends on how you pronounce "coffee." But in a similar fashion, when I try to teach people how to properly pronounce my name, the sounds they make never sounds quite like how I say it. Plus, I've heard people tell me (that is, after I've told them, "no, that's not how you pronounce that word -- THIS is"), "But it sounds the same! I don't know what you're talking about!"

It's also funny when Brits try to copy my American accent. It's so exaggerated when they do it -- I love it :) Oh, and when my mom jokingly says, "멸치 볶음 (I think that's how you spell it anyway)" (Myulchi bokkeum) to say "merci beaucoup." I mean, yes, she can't actually pronounce it -- it's difficult for her, but she CAN pronounce it better than myulchi bokkeum, y'know?

*sigh* I tend to do this a lot. Even in real life. ...that is, babble.

The comments about her Engrish abilities are in abundance here so I'll refrain from commenting. I do want to ask one question though. Where does she keep her internal organs? Is that some kind of new Korean plastic surgery? To make you look thinner, we remove any tissue from your body that isn't reall needed for daily life. I just had to mention that because the pic freaked me out a bit.

This was originally written and recorded by a band called the Arrows
in 1975. Joan Jett is alive and still rocking and spinning on stages
all over the world.
Arrows make the money from every version, not Joan Jett,
who covered the song very well, but didn't create it.
The Arrows version is on youtube for those of you curious.
Best,
Jennifer

I am viewing her performance of I love Rock n roll, it seems lacking, it looks cutesy type and not rock and rolly type, know what I mean? I only like her a bit, that was back on her My Girl days. (however, I think she copies how han ji hye portrays Jung Sook - Ji hye's character in Sweet 18, even the hairstyle - side bun type when she plays her Yoo Rin role in My Girl).
