Blast from kpop’s past
by javabeans
Wow, here’s one to make you feel really old. (Or really young, I suppose.)
Back in the Stone Ages, aka the ’90s, there was a pop group that was terribly popular for about a second and a half. Maybe the title of their hit single in the summer of my (loooong-bygone) youth is a reference to that short-lived fame, maybe not. The group burst on the scene and immediately gained popularity, which I’m figuring was mostly due to its quirky, cute sound, which was different from the sea of homogenous kpop music dominated at the time by — oh, and boy do we feel old! — such balladeers as Shin Seung Hun and groups like Seotaiji and the Boys, Noise, DJ Doc, Roo’ra, Cool, Diva.
That group was Two Two. Perhaps this picture rings a bell?
(And perhaps now you’d like to un-ring that bell?)
I just figured they were a one-hit wonder (technically I think they were more of a two-hit wonder), but one of their former members, Ms. Hwang Hye Young, went on to be in a few more pop groups and eventually resurfaced as a minor actor (she also recently appeared on MBC Every1’s variety program Put On a Neverending Show with another former ’90s gasu (pop singer), Kim Ji Hyun of Roo’ra fame).
And next month, she’ll be back after a decade away from acting, appearing in KBS’s sitcom Unstoppable Wedding. Seeing as how the day the news was announced (today; the 17th), her name hit #1 on the search portals, response to her comeback has been sizable. (Plus, the online shopping mall she runs had such a crush of traffic that the server went down.)
I just can’t believe that after thirteen years, I can still sing along to this song —

I read somewhere that the group broke up prematurely because the guys had to go to the army. I think I still have the cassette tape of this song.
little kid: what's a cassette tape?
me: get off my lawn!

OMG! Even I remember this song! I think I still have the videotape of them performing "one and a half"...man! Hwang Hye Young use to be so dark/tan. And there's Kim Ji Hoon (?)...I see him around on variety shows once in a while.

Amyable, man I had the cassette tape too. And then this guy in my class bought the CD and I remember ooh'ing over the cover and how odd it was that the picture was square (and not small and rectangular like all cassette covers). I remember the group used to be on Gayo Top 10 all the freaking time singing this song and I'd think how pretty the girl's voice was live. (i'm not sure if they were live -- i think they were, but I may not have grasped the concept of lip-synching back then.)

Ohh! This song! Haha. I remember that someone performed it on the newest X-Man series in the Battle Performance segment. It was a HUGE hit with everyone there, especially MC Yoo, haha. :D

ok... i so love this song. i was born 1989 but i heard this song on xman well when the new xman was still airing and a contestant performed that song for the judging portion. yea, i learned the dance moves right when it showed. it was the episode with dbsk and se7en. i think the question was who has the most competitive streak...yea :) one of the members of the group came out to perform it while she danced along. it was so cute and the guy looked really good, i mean yum! i have tried to look for it but gave up. now i will get it!

its_trish, thanks for the link! oh man, seeing that makes me remember that dance -- and judging from everyone else's reactions, they all remember the song even if it was over a decade ago. it's just one of those songs you might not think about for years but suddenly the music starts and you magically know all the words again.

I just saw the girl and heard part of the song (same song?) on a recent episode of Strong Heart and have been looking for Two Two's music but to no avail... Would you re-post the song, please?
