Ryan Reynolds new reality documentary show, “Welcome to Wrexham,” debuted this week with fanfare that it is a unique, fascinating and fun television show about a celebrity buying a down-in-the-dumps , lowest level UK professional soccer franchise in hopes that he can turn it around into a winner..

However, in 2019 Kim Soo Ro bought a lower level soccer club and with the help of Kai and Lee Si Young tried to turn around his professional soccer franchise, the Chelsea Rovers. I remember watching the show during its run: Kim is a soccer fanatic so this was his dream project to own an English soccer club. He bought one at the lowest level of pro league but struggled with promotion, scheduling, practice and player development (even though he brought a couple of Korean players to join the team). There was a huge culture difference. Success, even the little ones, were far between. The end of season dinner of traditional Korean food to players and their families who never experienced it was the best part of the show. A few of their players got a shot at a promotion to a higher league for the next season which was heartwarming to Kim.

I do not plan to watch the newer version of this concept.

Happy Friday everyone!
This may seem like a silly question because but for people who have intentionally taken a hiatus from dramaland and drama related sites, how did you do that?

I have never been on a complete hiatus since I started live watching dramas several years back. Yes, I do get into a drama slump often but even for that, I will turn up to some other kind of entertainment such as variety shows or c dramas. I've been thinking of spending my time on self improvement but it's just easier to escape into dramas. While I do not regret the enjoyment and relief they bring me at the end of a hectic day, I do think that I should be investing the limited time left in a day on things I should be strictly doing now or it will get too late. In simple terms dramas have been a kind of addiction that I've never stopped consuming for a while even if I could've spent that time on something else that needed my attention. Hence, I'm pretty unaware of how to take a long hiatus. Not only from dramas but also sites like DB.

Also, it seems like the right time to take a break with the only kdrama (Alchemy of Souls) and addictive cdrama (Love between fairy and devil) I'm watching, ending this week. A slump may naturally follow as nothing may meet the excitement I felt for the latter. But I always find my way back here somehow.

So for those who intentionally cut off and login here/watch dramas after months, (not because of getting busy, or life happening but trying to limit the use themselves), how have you gone about it?

I find it easiest to break a habit - let's be real, this is a habit we're talking about... despite how we all feel from time to time, a person does not *need* dramas to live - when you find an accountability partner who will hold you accountable if you slip. Get a friend to call you each night and ask you what you accomplished that day, no matter how small. Set goals and share them with your accountability partner - by Tuesday, I will have cleaned my closet. By Friday, I will have worked my way up to a mile on the treadmill. etc. Depending on what your self progress goals are. And make it fun - you guys will go out for drinks and karaoke once you hit goal A, or you will let yourself buy X once you hit goal B. And the last thing - set an end date. You can bear anything if you know when it will end... I will allow myself to re-enter dramaland in February, or by Christmas, or whatever. You'll likely find that when you reach that point, you may not even be so desperate to get back into it. 화이팅!

Thank you so much for this. Yes, this is definitely a habit. It's actually quite difficult for me to break a habit be it dramas or anything else. But I guess I've missed a point, accountability. Knowing that only you're checking on yourself doesn't help. I'll try your tips this time.

Not sure if this is similar but I took a social media break for about 3 months some time last year.
It was fairly easy for me because I really needed that "personal time" and my phone settings allow me to block the Internet connection to any app on my phone. So even if I happened to "slip" unconsciously, it was alright.

I know some people just uninstall apps so you can do that for Netflix, Viki etc but since DB is a website 😅. I'm not sure

I think that at the end of the day you can do it if you're really really really really determined and have a sort of objective

I've been on a social media break for a long time to. Took the extreme route with deleting apps. That definitely helps and now I don't want to log into social media. But DB is different yes. I think deleting apps as you suggested can help in this case too. Thank you so much.

Some obligations could be so engaging that naturally you'd not even think about dramas at all. If that's the kind of situation you'd find yourself in moving forward, you do not need any intentional means to restrict watching.

What can I advice.
Don't keep track of what's happening in the drama world. Looking back there are so many dramas I made mental notes to watch but didn't solely because I didn't keep track of them. It was unintentional but I guess you could make it intentional,
and/or find a new contemporary interest,
and/or logout so as not to comment as actively as you'd have if you were logged in.
You could also try to watch one at a time no matter the squee factor. Not more than 1 drama on your watchlist at a time just as you're doing at the moment. That way you have your dose of kdrama twice in a week whilst having all the time you need for the next 6 days.
Over time they'll be times when whatever is scheduled to air ain't your cup of tea and voila! you have all the week to yourself.

I second this. Go with the natural flow and limit your time than completely cutting it off.

These are some great suggestions thanks a lot for them. And you're right, when some obligations are engaging enough, everything takes a backseat (that's also why I was late in replying, sorry for that). But doing so intentionally is hard when the obligations are not that occupying. I'll try your suggestions, moderation may just be more appropriate than totally cutting off.

Is there something you can do in the drama slot that doesn’t feel like work? It could be listening to a podcast or audiobook, reading/book club would give you the sense of community like DB. Doing a class online or in person. Going back to old hobbies. It maybe you decide to do more of something you are already doing. Could you sign up to something with a friend so you can encourage each other?
It’s been great seeing you in the community and all the best with your new venture.

Incorporating another hobby sounds good because the mind needs ro relax too. I guess that can work to keep me busy in what needs to be done and also providing a small break.

I'm lucky in that I only watch what my favorite actors are in, and if they aren't in anything new I might even take a year without watching a Korean drama or coming to dramabeans. Take for instance gong hyo Jin and lee do hyun, I'm waiting for their upcoming dramas and I'm not even trying to find a new drama to watch. I wish you the best

When it starts to interfere in your daily life, leading to poor sleeping habits and feeling distracted until you get your fix of the next episode - it's a sign you're addicted. This was me.
I've been reading an interesting book called "Dopamine Nation" which talks about how we're all so "wired" to constantly be plugged in...none of us know how to be alone with our thoughts. I've been off dramas for a month now, I know my personality..I'm the addictive type, so I simply don't allow myself until I can start making sure I don't keep binge watching. Take a break, read stuff in between, learn to sit with your thoughts and make a list of the dramas you'd like to watch once you feel better and less "hooked".

I feel you.
Sometimes it really feels like an addiction (maybe it is but no one care because we're not harming others, who knows).
I remember that in 2014 (a little of 2015) I didn't watch dramas or listen to kpop but it was all because of external forces tbh.

Like you, I can't be on a total haitus (we use almost the same nicotine patches 😂), but I remember that it was easier for me to focus on other stuff when I didn't have a cell phone.

Even now that I'm implementing this new routine where I turn off my cell phone and computer at certain hour I've been able to write and read.

Before, when I couldn't sleep I would take my phone and rewatch something. Now, I read, because turning on my phone is more bothersome. 😂 I'm re-reading some of Gabo's short stories! Oh, and I kinda wrote some ideas for a poem too.

So, I think that's it. I think you need to force yourself 🤣 I totally worked in high school. Sometimes my mom was like "no wifi for you" so I just started writing, thinking, drawing and stuff.

On the other hand, self improvement is overrated and this addiction is harmless so just enjoy while you can. Just follow your heart.
(I believe that people should hear good and bad advices so they have the whole picture and make the best decision for them 😂😂).

Required fields are marked *

Love all your advices. I can tell we are definitely on the same nicotine patches. I can't stop using my phone unless I switch it off too. Extreme measures need to be taken. Also I agree that self improvement is overrated. Thanks for saying that. But my drama addiction goes beyond watching the show, it extends to DB and other sites and let's not forget how it occupies my mind. In that case, I'm spending a lot more time on a drama than I should be and that somehow makes you guilty later on. It shouldn't because it's a means of relaxation and I cherish my drama time amd this habit doesn't harm anyone. But when there are less few hours in the day, and you need to get something done which isn't necessary but still beneficial, I think I'll have to take this step.

Hope you get to do everything you want to ^^

1

What works for me is truly, deeply realising that a certain habit is harming me more than helping me. Visualising the negative impact, the consequences helps in reducing the draw of that habit.
But if it's really hard to break free, try starting small. Watch 2 episodes instead of 3. Revel in the victory of that. It has to feel good, that makes it easier to do. There'll be missteps but know that you can always bounce back.
A level of desperation/fierce need also helps. If I'm desperate to achieve/change something, if that pull is stronger than the pull of drama-watching, it's easier to break free.

Thanks a lot. I've never thought of visualizing the negative impact. It sounds scary but also effective in making the move. And you are right, regret alone may not be enough, desperation and fierce need can make a difference.

It takes time to break a habit, so don't force yourself if that's not something you're easily able to do. (Some people can quit "cold turkey," but many cannot and that's okay!) You can set some of your own parameters to start like, don't visit the Open Thread, only read the recaps on your drama sites and nothing else, set a time limit to watching dramas, etc.

I've been a member of DB since like 2010 or 2011 (and lurked a long time before that). I was definitely obsessed. I mean, my username is a mash up of "kdrama" and "encyclopedia," to give you an idea of how much I was into dramas! 😆 I used to watch like 8-10 airing dramas, plus the all the music shows and a couple variety shows.

But as I weaned myself off, eventually it became an after thought. I don't comment as much anymore (unless I'm live watching a show or two), and most current DB commenters don't know who I am and vice versa!

Now that I don't live watch as many shows, I can read old recaps and not feel compelled to comment because it was posted too long ago. Instead, I make a note of what shows are on and then make time to binge watch them at a later date (like a long holiday weekend) instead of every night.

I'm proof that it can be done and can be done long term. Yes, you can say now that "life got in the way," but I honestly think life got in the way beacause I let that happen and prioritized other things over dramas as time went by.

I said this for 25-21 and I'll say it again for Café Minamdang, reviews are SUPPOSED to change after a drama finishes.

I honestly don't believe that ratings should be allowed until a drama is finished airing because you need to see an entire show before you can accurately judge it.

There are 100s of shows that start off good and then end horribly. That doesn't mean the reviewers are suddenly "harsh" or "mean." It means they are looking at the show as a whole and not just a few episodes. Which is exactly what a review is.

Let the reviews accurately reflect the show so future people can make reasonable decisions on whether to watch a show or not. If someone doesn't want to waste time watching an 18-episode drama that ends poorly, the honest reviews of the entire series can help them out.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I wasn't implying that it's a bad thing. My comment was highlighting how quickly people's opinion of a drama can change which I find funny/sad.

I like the current system of ratings because I sometimes look at ratings and reviews to decide if I should start an ongoing drama. I'm well aware that a drama might start off well(good ratings) but get ruined by a single episode or a couple of episodes. This can completely change a viewer's opinion which will be reflected in the ratings.

Even the ratings of dramas which aired years ago change as more people watch them and rate them.
People simply need to understand that the ratings of ongoing dramas are more likely to be subject to huge changes.

What awesome season - It surely is.

Not so good week on every scale - heh

As said last week - Autumn goes well for me but this time around to make things more interesting and bring in some change that is a must for 2022 - Autumn won't be as much easy.

All Depends upon December now. December which is consider the most +ve month. Let's see how things unfold. I thought i would be in a big pinch and pushed into corner - but that gonna be in September.

RAIN - such a tease. Its beautiful - highly enjoyable - not even a drop. August usually have some showers but this time around it's total dry parade - except those 15 minutes. keep up and it will become even bigger entertainment. That's how you check the levels. Time to see the true nature of many.

I'm already not in good shape so nothing much matter. I'm just gonna enjoy the live show.

It isn't about having control or even about temptation. You can't have always the things you want, what you like or love can become trouble too. So have to have that idea of life where you have no feel for anything.
A calm heart that can face all distractions without any fear.

My favorite Korean showbiz news of the week:
(1) I found that three KBS weekenders Homemade Love Story, Revolutionary Sisters and Young Lady and Gentleman are now available on Netflix.
(2) There'll be potential IU-Park Bo-gum Kdrama with My Ajusshi PD Kim Won-seok.
(3) Netflix Korean film Seoul Vibe had just been released already as of today! Who wants to do a Dramabeans review for this film?
(4) Also released today was the new Korean sitcom Unicorn. So I am shocked that Unicorn should be the first-ever Korean sitcom to be weecap on Dramabeans after I found out that my fave Korean sitcom Unicorn was on Currently Recapping. I wonder who assigned Unicorn to weecap?

No. Weekend "family" dramas are a unique Korean invention. "Family" doesn't mean that they're about or for children but that they revolve around the relationships between the adults in several families. Some drama writers specialize in the genre, which emphasizes characters over story. A good writer can draw you in, but it takes a special skill (or plot devices) to keep you watching for 50 episodes.

You asked, “why do Korean drama's always have bad endings?”
I might disagree with the word ‘always’. Oftentimes kdrama do have endings that leave much to be desired. One recent exception imo is the ending for Yoon Doo-joon’s NEVER GIVE UP (Netflix US). The dramedy and ending were both lovely.

In the live-shoot production filming, the network/producer/director are getting feedback from executives, advertisers and viewers in real time. Writers have been asked to adjust scripts while the show is running, which may deviate from their original intentions. Networks normally want happy endings to please viewers expectations.

I think sometimes the "bad endings" are subjective. For instance, I could be totally satisfied with how something ended and then I see people were mad that this or that didn't happen or wasn't resolved.
And plus endings are just hard.

It's not only kdramas. I think very few movies and TV shows in the world have good endings. I feel how you feel, I once said I can't name 5 kdramas with good endings.

Endings are just hard to write. You don’t want them too trite, too resolved, sometimes. The best endings for me are those where you can imagine the characters living past the series in their world. I think this is why American shows have so many seasons and never end. Remember the chaos that ensued when How met your mother ended? An amazing multi-season show and NO ONE likes the way they ended it. It felt like we all wasted like 10 years of our lives. 😂

Some excellent endings: Do you like Brahms? Never Give Up, IOTNBO, Romantic Doctor seasons 1-2, Prison Playbook, Forest of Secrets, My Ahjussi, Hospital Playlist 1-2, Mr. Sunshine, Dali and the Cocky Prince, The secret life of my secretary. There are probably more.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Tomorrow I am meeting up with two friends in a city we haven’t visited in years! We try to meet up every two months, but we had to cancel our July plans because all three of us got sick. Usually, I commute to their province far away and stay the whole weekend to spend some quality time with them in the cities they inhabit. Because I am not able to commute that far or stay that long this weekend, I requested them to literally meet me halfway and they gladly obliged. Our meeting place is a city right in between our homes where we would often hang out while in university. Some of our favorite stores might be the same as the ones where my friends live, but the food places certainly are not!😋 I am a bit sad that it is only a day and that we all need to commute back home early, but it will be nice to see another place with memories again and to have a relaxing Sunday afterwards.😴

A busy week. I watched films, attended office parties and met friends for drinks and all of weekdays (I worked full day and had evening plans on all these days) And I am going for a picnic tomorrow and a dinner plan on Sunday. I feel like I am living on edge. I have not been this busy since my 20s.

I have also started reading a new book and started brushing up a short story I wrote a year ago. I have yet to start watching Sleeper Hit and have discussion about it with @reply1988

I recently watched Mouse and afterwards, I came here only to find out it was dropped. I was surprised to say the least. And then they dropped it before the reveals!

After watching it, I wanted to talk about or read about it and even though it was dropped, if anyone out there can talk to me about it especially the back half (after it was dropped) that would be nice.

Did you try the Drama Hangout for Mouse? I think they made this topic for the end of the drama.

From what I can tell, the comments are up to about episode 15/16 and the series count was 20 episodes.
And the confusing thing was the recapper seemed into the show which is why I was confused and disappointed that it was dropped.

I think it got dropped because the recaps were quite far behind where the show was up to, so the ability to comment on what was happening was limited so didn’t get that much engagement. I was live watching and disappointed when it got dropped but also it was also quite frustrating when you’re a week ahead of the recaps trying to remember what you thought last week so you don’t post spoilers. It’s why I think the shift to weecaps is good, timeliness is so important for a good conversation.

One of the things I like about reading the recaps and reviews here is that it often gives me a different take that I didn't notice or insights into Korean culture or dramas.
I think sometimes that's missing in weecaps (though I get it and I'm grateful to all the recappers and reviewers who take the time to write them especially as quickly as they do). But it's small things such as in a show, the translations said they were calling each other "fool" but the recapper said they were actually using slang calling each other "a pain in the ass". The different interpretations hit a little different.

@britney I agree, I always like those insights too (and things like cameos that I don’t always recognise the significance of) so it’s a difficult balance.

After seeing the rating and reaction to Cafe Minamdang, now I'm curious about other badly rated dramas. What are the "worst" dramas and why?

I would like to stop seeing characters with inferiority complex going around treating other people like they owe them something.
Bro, in my second semester at college sometimes I walked home so I could save the money for food, that didn't mean I had the right to call my bestie or any of my other friends that had a better situation than me "princess" wtfrog.

If the writer thinks that I'm going to feel bad for the guy and understand why he tried to ruin Woo's career... LOL I'm not the worst, but I'm definitely not that nice.

Yeah, I watched half of EAWoo's episode 13.
I will never like that guy and if the ship sails I'm gonna be mad.

Beanies! I miss you. 😔 I'm literally watching the only show no one else is watching (It's Beautiful Now). Thanks god the open thread exists.
I hope y'all have a nice weekend! 💚

Ps. This week I was soooo lazy (and so weird), I can see future tabong crying and cursing past tabong for all the procastination. I need to be liberated from myself, jesus christ. I binge watched LOUD and said that I wanted to become a rapper from PNation. LOL

I’m so late to the open thread but I’m just going to complain once again about winter illnesses and give thanks once again to the local emergency room - I am here for the third time since May with the Littlest One, who once again couldn’t breathe despite the best efforts of her inhaler 😢 we got seen right away and she’s slowly improving now. Doctors and nurses are amazing ❤️

Hoping your littlest recovers well! This probably isn’t my place at all, but she may need care from a specialist in asthma to get her under control. It sounds like she needs more of a controller asthma medication or some help mitigating whatever is triggering her breathing difficulties. Fighting!

My plan this weekend is to watch the new Alchemy of Souls episodes and hope they do not disappoint. I'm also finishing up Ashes of Love - Chinese Drama, and Kings Avatar. Still working on reading and writing in Hangul. I can read, just don't know what the words say - lol!
Still hot here in Arizona, so will be chilling indoors - plenty of drama time. Have a great weekend everyone.

Dearest DB homies,

I have just finished my cross country move. Now I just need to find a place to live! I start my new job on Monday. I'm nervous since so many of previous jobs descended into disaster and tears. I'm really excited for this one (like I always am). I'm sleeping on my brothers couch until I find a place to live so my already drama slumped drama watching--which is at an all time low--wil be even less. But hopefully not for long. My tradition when I move into a new place is ice cream for breakfast and a drama. Here's to new beginnings! Hope you're all doing well dear homies!

Does anyone remember the actor Phillip Lee? He wasn't in many dramas, but one of them was Faith. Does anyone know which of his dramas was the "best" one? I want to find it and watch it, but am unsure which one it is. He was most likely always a secondary character and never a lead.

He was in Secret Garden (But I found him pretty bad but less the SFL).

Then I think I'll skip that one if he wasn't any good in it.

The podcast Dramas Over Flowers just posted their overview of 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' and they were unexpectedly harsh in their criticism. Apparently they would have preferred to watch a gritty French drama on the subject rather than a fluffy K-drama with all the standard fluffy K-drama elements. I think one of the hosts criticized the show for the lack of urine-stained bathrooms, though I didn't really get their point.
