Humans have always had the allure of a Gold Rush. History has shown that the surge toward instant wealth lasts only 6 to 10 years before it ends, usually suddenly. The same can be said for modern wealth chases: the domain name frenzy, the web site content click bait churn, trendy apps, to new social platforms from facebook to TikTok. The formula seems to hold true in K-drama production.
Netflix entered the Korean drama market in 2016. It has produced, invested or licensed more than 130 SK projects. In 2021 it invested $450 million in Korean content. It rode the Korean wave with several global hit series. But last month, Netflix stock plunged more than 35 percent on the news that its global subscriber base went down 200,000, a first for the company. It is a bad omen considering press reports show that the main driver of early stream adopters was not original content but reruns of classic shows like Star Trek, Seinfeld and Friends. A recent survey of Netflix users indicated that a majority were just not interested in original or new shows. Executives said part of the problem is that there may be 100 million “free” users (using someone else’s account) and the trend that subscribers are willing to cut and run after only a month of binge viewing what they want to see. Executives stressed the dire problem action plan with possible solutions: advertising in shows and cutting costs (especially for new content). The latter seems to be a given as Netflix began axing several programs already in development, including ten of its green lit animation series.
The cycle of something new to maturity to being left behind continues to churn and burn companies, especially in media. The gold rush of throwing money into Korean content may be over sooner than we think; affecting both local production firms and actors betting on big paydays ahead.

I think K-dramaland will be fine even if Netflix fades away into irrelevancy there's always something else or someone else waiting in the wings.
Niche services like Viki and and other Asian streamers will likely be the ones to benefit from it, it would be a good way for them to expand to international territories as well.
Or Korean creators could just take their content to consumers directly via their own distribution model.

I think Netflix itself is moving in that direction, and that will be how it survives, appealing to specialized audiences. However, as we see with Disney+ handling of kdrama content, only supplying it to regions that it is sure it has an audience, that might not be good for all fans of the genre!

Thanks, welh. You know a lot about these things, so I wouldn't be surprised if your thoughts here are accurate.
While I wouldn't worry too much about kdramas if Netflix's subscriber/streaming model proves unsustainable, I wouldn't be too surprised if the current flood of new shows on a variety of international streaming platforms slows to a trickle. There was a particular confluence of new streaming technology (and blogging website technology--Dramabeans was also crucial) and a burst of kdrama creativity around 2000-10 or so. That was consolidated and has continued up to the present day -- but may be ebbing.
I don't want to take anything away from citizens of the Republic of Korea itself, but it does seem that internationally, key 2nd and 3rd generation Korean Americans played a major role, also an economic/creative boost in other Asian countries coming from China and Hong Kong's growth, plus Japan (earlier), the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand (I'm leaving out Indonesia and India because I don't know enough about them, but I suspect they were involved as well.)
Currently Korean-American immigration has slowed; China is struggling economically and is set on an authoritarian strangling any type of artistic creativity, especially that from Hong Kong. I believe that is happening in other Asian countries as well. Of course there remain brilliant writers, directors, and actors, but institutional conditions are no longer quite so favorable.
Meanwhile, who knows what is happening with technology, but the simultaneous rise of tiktok and then the "predictive" influence of AI suggests a further fragmentation of the audience that will prevent breakout hits such as Squid Games.
Given that kdramas' content themes have been pretty universal since the rise of mass culture--romance, action adventure, comedy, nostalgia etc. I doubt those will disappear. But the international popularity of Korean television's version of them might soon fade. It could very well be we have passed peak kdrama!

It's certainly doom and gloom for Netflix right now but anyone expecting these companies to grow forever, especially with all the competition now, is nuts. The other streaming services will find themselves in similar positions someday. I think a lot of people are like me and hop around from one streaming service to another. I certainly think Netflix can survive but they will have to make the right changes. I believe Asia showed growth, so while there may be some cost cutting, I expect that their k-drama output will continue, for now anyway.

Eh, it's too early to say Korean content budgets will be slashed. Everytime a company misses their (already high) targets people act like its about to head into bankruptcy. If anything, those Korean content budgets will remain the same if not grow given Asia is the only region showing growth and promise.
It's a good thing that Netflix is looking at their content spending more carefully and not just tossing out money at everyone and everything. I don't get how they gave the Sussexes an 8-figure deal and still don't have anything to show for it.

Tbh I would be more happy if the shows I wanted to watch were licensed by Viki and not Netflix. And I don't really care about their original kdramas.
But these days I've heard actors really interested in being part of a Netflix production. They want to be in the next "Squid Game" hit, so I would feel bad for them.

While I am not a fan of Netflix much, I do not like Viki for the reason that in spite of charging for the paid subscription (and ads for those who do not pay), they do not pay those who provide subtitles. That means using free services for paid programming and delays in subbing.

Frankly down 200,000 on a *global base* when spring has arrived and people are spending less time inside doesn't sound all that surprising. It merely sounds cyclical. I hear (don't know if its true) Netflix lost 700,000 subscribers when Russia got sanctioned. That's a genuine blow to them.

Losing Russian subscribers was a widely cited reason.
Having been on the corporate side dealing with raw revenue/gross margin numbers then hearing about how management explained lack-luster results, I would take their reporting with a few grains of salt.

Only 2 seasons future. I like spring and autumn as much because of good weather all around but this time spring became the summer.
What summer have in store for everyone - Good thing is less humidity.
Temperature going up as well as high humidity is good recipe of natural suffering. In the meantime energy has become costly, prices f gas going up - coal - carbon emissions.
So you have to look for wind and solar energy but that is also not progressing as fast. Nuclear energy has nuclear waste issues.
Big Headache all around.
Poor nations and small nations gonna be affected most and they are the ones doing better job whereas those who are mainly responsible are still enjoying, not ready to see their privileges and way behind on climate goals. Well, Mother Earth gonna do proper justice - sooner or later. Justice doesn't discriminate.

I continue to watch the show Tomorrow, even though, frankly, the show veers from incoherent fantasy to disturbing reality, without much overall narrative logic, as far as I can see. It is, however, so sincere in its sympathy for people who are driven to attempt suicide, and so earnest in the inspirational messages it tries to convey when saving its characters, that its hard to dislike it.
Plus, who am I kidding: Kim Hee-seon. And the director was obviously catering to the huge and influential kdrama audience of heterosexual men in their sixties, because about every 3rd camera shot is a close up of her exquisite features.
But this week the show brought up an important issue that I think deserves a lot more attention: pet suicides. Even I, a life long pet owner, had not thought that many of unexplained pet behaviors were actually cries for help. For example, I had always been told that the strange disappearance of my first pet, Goldy the Goldfish, associated with the flushing of the toilet, was an accident involving one of my parents. But now I realize that Goldy, desperate to escape the constant scrutiny of its every action as it swam aimlessly around its little bowl, probably decided to flush its misery away. And was the gerbil, whose name I can’t remember now, actually attempting to run itself to death on the exercise wheel before it was snatched out of its cage by Oscar, our cat, playing the role of Grim Reaper Park Joong-gil?
Just after we watched the pet suicide episode, my wife and I were alarmed by a loud crashing of cutlery from the kitchen. Noticing that our somewhat portly Labrador had uncharacteristically wandered away from her pillow, we rushed in, fearing that the dog might have been made desolate by our attempts to put it on a diet, and was grabbing a knife to harm herself. To our great relief, it turned out she had simply hoisted her herself vertical, with two paws up on the counter, and had knocked some dirty dishes off trying to lick up a piece of kibble that had escaped her bowl.
Still, the next day, at the recommendation of her pet therapist, we took her to the park to chase squirrels and rabbits. Unlike suicidal pets, these wild animals seemed quite eager to avoid their own demise. (Not that they were under any threat from my dog, who has never come within 10 yards of what she chases). Our dog is once more contentedly snoring on its pillow. We can thank “Tomorrow” for its timely intervention!

Happy Friday to all!
Random thoughts..
I've read some early comments about "The Sound of Magic" that complained about the musical aspect of it; one person said there was too much singing (*), and I wonder, why would anyone expect a musical drama to not have singing?!?
It's as if I went and made a comment about "All Of Us Are Dead" having too many zombies, or something lol!
Point is, I really don't get people like that, biggest pet peeve of mine xD

Production quality is high and the cinematography is beautiful!
Only downside is that the characters' arc are somewhat underdeveloped.

The result of the 58th Baeksang Art Awards for tv shows :
Grand Prize: “Squid Game” I guess it's not surprising with the international success.
Best Drama: “D.P.” I'm so happy with this choice, it was my favourite Netflix's drama.
Best Director: Hwang Dong Hyuk (“Squid Game”)
Best Actor: Lee Junho (“The Red Sleeve”) How Kim Nam Gil for “Through the Darkness” couldn't win? Or Jung Hae-In in D.P. At least, they had interesting roles, different from the usual ones.
Best Actress: Kim Tae Ri (“Twenty Five, Twenty One”) She was very good. But I was hoping Park Eun-Bin would win. She was really great as Hwi, a very unique role.
Best Supporting Actor: Jo Hyun Chul (“D.P.”) I'm happy for him. Lee Deok Hwa in “The Red Sleeve” could have been a great winner too.
Best Supporting Actress: Kim Shin Rok (“Hellbound”)
Best New Actor: Goo Kyo Hwan (“D.P.”) So happy for him! He was really good in this role. I hope we will get to know his character's past in the second season.
Best New Actress: Kim Hye Joon (“Inspector Koo”)
Best Screenplay: Kim Min Seok (“Juvenile Justice”)
Best Art Direction: Jung Jae Il (“Squid Game”)
TikTok Popularity Award: Lee Junho (“The Red Sleeve”), Kim Tae Ri (“Twenty Five, Twenty One”)

How Kim Nam Gil didn't win Best Actor amuses me. His portrayal of Song Ha-young was more... solid than Lee Jun-ho's Jeongjo.
The competition was tight, really tight. Best Supporting Actress category is one I can give as my own example.
And I hoped On The Verge Of Insanity would receive nominations at the Baeksang, and perhaps win one of the awards. It remained a hope.

I agree that several of the winners, while pretty ok, are kinda mediocre compared to some others in their field. Tons of lead male performances that are more impressive than Lee Jun-ho's come to mind: as already mentioned, Kim Nam-gil and Jung Hae-in, not to mention Yoo Ah-in in Hellbound and Park Hae-soo in Squid Game. And the script of Juvenile Justice is pretty clunky and full of, er, recycled elements, compared to the likes of DP, Blue House and On the Verge of Insanity. That said, Hellbound's Kim Shin-rok getting best supporting actress is one of the most deserving wins I've ever seen!

I haven't seen Blue House (I have made a mental note to), but Juvenile Justice winning best writing is worth it. It's elements could have been recycled and not so original but it was also a touchy one. Differing views, all salient point of views here on Dramabeans is a good example. It is no easy task to craft such topics, even in a few years time.
But were OTVOI in that category, I'd want it to win as well. I'd also be torn because they were both delicate scripts that could have gone awry.

Agree that the subject of juvenile crime is a very difficult one, but I don't think a show should be praised for its subject matter per se, but for how it approaches that subject matter. And IMO JJ deals with its subject in a rather superficial and clumsy way, e.g. making the schizophrenic kid in the first case look like a demented killer; placing each of the three main characters in a melodramatic arc at the expense of more important issues. In fact I'd go as far as to say that the script does nothing particularly well: the characters are not very believable or well developed, the structure is rather choppily episodic and the story swings abruptly between dirty realism and high melodrama. For a clearer-eyed and more focused (albeit much narrower) look at juvenile justice in Korea, I recommend the 2012 film Juvenile Offender.

Lee Jun-Ho was good but I didn't think he was great and his character was the typical ML. KNG acted his role with so much finess. His role was very different from the other police dramas too.

My husband has it now after traveling for a conference for the first time in two years (no masking on planes and airports now). My son and I are the only ones in the immediate family who haven’t gotten it.

We’re all as vaccinated as possible but we do have one who is too young for vaccines (the one most affected by respiratory ailments, yay!). I’m hoping for the best but already starting to wonder if I’ve got a sore throat 😅

I hope you all fare well with this. We’re all going to get it at some point and hopefully, your vaccines will help you get through it faster and easier! And the littlest one will hopefully have a mild case as most kids do!

Well, we’re all down with it now 😅 - guess we’ll just see how we go. Patient zero is already basically back to her normal self so I’m hoping littlest one follows her trajectory.

Well, now I’m positive. Asymptomatic, but positive.

@ally-le Finger crossed you remain asymptomatic! I’m not too bad but also wouldn’t recommend it 😄 Littlest one is starting to eat and drink again after doing her best to freak us out (honestly the other two were never as scary when sick) so hopefully it’s all looking up now!

Oh, please take care. Hope it spares the rest of the family. When it doesn't, hope you recover quickly and find the support you need. Kia kaha!

I know this is hypocritical to say given the reality of non-recyclable plastic usage in most parts of the world but given KDramas soft power, it would be so good if they come up with an industry wide code about characters not constantly using non-recyclable plastic bags. Cultural change doesn’t happen overnight but it would be such an important message to send to the rest of the world as well as reduce their own environmental footprint.

Interesting, as SK is noted for excellent consumer recycling systems. According to this article, they do have bins just for plastic bags, I wonder if they have a way to recycle them that we don’t have?

@bbstl: Hi. Thank you for the link and the info. I would gladly take back what I said! It would be good though to have KDrama characters bring reusable bags to shops, etc. I have only seen one instance of that.

Yes, it really would be good. I always laugh because it seems like a kdrama character can’t shop for groceries without coming home with a big bunch of leeks sticking out of their bag and it is usually a plastic bag ☹️

That’s really funny I thought they were giant spring onions because everyone seemed to use them!!

@reply1988 I suspect you are right that they’re more of a giant spring onion than a leek. Now I want to know for sure! 😄

In My Liberation Notes, I feel as though Chang-Hee is attracted to Mr Gu but he doesn’t quite recognise it himself. Does anyone else think so or am I barking up the wrong tree?

How charming is Shin Hyesun in Still 17? I hadn’t seen this before and just find it so lovely and humane (the coma lasting 13 years and the person waking up with no physical effects deserves a huge side eye but I just rolled my eyes and moved on). And, Ahn Hyoseop has matured so much in 4 years. He is a delightful goofball in Still 17.

@DancingEmma thanks for reminding me of this sweet drama I really loved the little brother’s character too.
I agree the illness side of things in all K dramas is just ridiculous, the hospital is used to prevent scaring for the most minor of injuries, doctors disclose the patient’s treatment details to anyone who claims to be a guardian and whatever the illness the patient will get a drip and sleep it off!
