Baseball is my favorite sport. But pro teams have had issues with scouting new talent. Some teams have decided to use psychological research to avoid scouting bias. The study dealt with “representative heuristic” when a person’s assessment is heavily influenced by what is believed to be the standard or ideal. It is a bias in decision making toward the prototypical. It is a reminder that one has to be aware of one’s own human flaws.

The researchers concluded that there is a psychodrama between two characters going on in a person’s head. The interplay is between #1, the instinct response which is enhanced by experience but it is automatic and rapid. It seeks coherence and will apply relevant memories to explain events.

Character #2 is more complex, thoughtful reasoning with a slower, rational analysis but is prone to laziness and fatigue. When #2 is overloaded, #1 can make an impulsive decision often at the expense of self control. And once a person makes a “decision,” they try to reinforce it instead of admitting a mistake.

This dynamic can be applied to just about everything, from how we view strangers, actors or idols to early dating relationships (another study I read 65% of dating relationships fail while 85% of on-off & long distance relationships fail, so after the initial honeymoon period reality sets in). People often project on to others what they want instead of what is true. How often to you do you get caught up in a celebrity’s body of work as a basis to project their personality and mores only to be shocked by scandal stories of of his or her bad behavior? Even within dramas, how many times have you yelled at the screen when the female lead immediately falls for the jerk male lead? Well, there now is a scientific explanation.

I read somewhere that more entrepreneurs are #1 than #2 because there are too many decisions that require quick judgement.

I'm old enough and jaded (or cynical) enough to not be shocked by celebrity scandals. If I must judge them, I try doing so only about their work.

Little Boy - oh ho 2115k even before the 1st week of March

2215k - 19th march. let's see where this goes. rampage it is.

I saw not many female traders active on SNS but then joined changed keywords - did another twitter account and was happy to see few but had lot of followers - active female traders. Modern market suits traders the most.

Virtual identities can be pretty annoying, especially on sns. Ask you silly yet dangerous questions.
Where r u from? It's virtual world. And why do you need some other identity's private detail?
This kind of questions are quite problematic.
You can be an identity who doesn't lie - but you not want to share your info with some strangers too(real or virtual world)

As usual i found a workaround this nuisance by using tropics, and then continent and and then choosing longitudes. Enough indication that am not interested in revealing the region.

Same too many ask for your name - I always gave them the not-legal name. Seriously, people try to be too familiar with others aka social contact they try to develop in such a short time.

I'm not someone saint, of highly honest identity and I can make 100s of lies but never do as it's against the rules. Lying isn't difficult, nor it makes me feel uneasy.
It's just futile effort. If lying makes me president of a powerful nation then i can think about making 1000s of lies. Risk-reward is good. Making lies and excuses for silly things is foolishness.
Again, its easier said than done. Its fits into paradoxical questions. Unless and until you question yourself, you can't be sure of anything. Right now you aren't on podium so you can claim anything. You aren't tested so you can make any absurd claim. I deliberately chose to not lie not because i care about others. Its all about my own pleasure irrespective of whether someone gets benefits out of it or not. That's how it goes in normal human life. You can see it in the eyes of facemasks, lies, more lies sugarcoated as acts and mistakes of life.

Started with the clam scene in Forest - comments in the recap threads.

Cults I know of-
1. Fish Cult - fish COR, Epic Funeral for a Fish, etc...but has been quiet for a while.
2. Clam Cult - has ruptured containment in the Forest recap comment threads, and has been seen in the wild.
3. Cult of the Indifferent LT - several High Priestesses inhabit various recap threads and fan walls.

Join the fun!

Greetings, all! Hope everyone is doing well.

Today I had the first round interview for that job I told you all about last week. I think it went pretty well - at least, I have no regrets or anything I'm cringing about now! I don't know if I'll make it to the second round, but I'm very glad that I took this leap, no matter where it goes. Thanks again for all your support!

The recently released dramas have quite hooked me the way I'd hoped, but the silver lining is that I've been reading a lot more because of that. I'm really enjoying my current book in particular. Plus, the weather has been really lovely - having my windows open during the day, even if just for a bit, has literally breathed a bit of fresh air into my life.

And the cherry on top is that my daddy is off to get the first jab of his Covid vaccine this morning - I'm most grateful for this above everything else.

Wishing you all well and happy!

Happy Friday beanies! Spent this whole week recovering from the massive snowstorm that hit Texas. Catching up on school and life, in general, was very tiring.
Currently not watching any kdramas, but I'm eyeing Vincenzo if I can suspend my disbelief in Song Joon Ki being a mafia boss long enough.
I am watching Harlan Coben's The Five on Netflix though, currently on episode 6. The show's pretty good, considering I managed to stop watching Criminal Minds long enough to get 6 episodes far lol.

Am I looking in the wrong place or has the option to make one-time donations disappeared? I know there used to be one because I have done it twice. I want to support DB, but I prefer to make only a small recurring/automatic payment and supplement it with occasional larger donations. Humor me on that.

Also, I would normally want to donate more in a year than I can find a way to in the donation screen now. Considering how much time I spend here it would be a bargain.

FWIW, the FAQ says:
Q: "Can I make a one-time or an annual donation?"
A: "We’ve added new payment options for both one-time and annual donation as requested. You can check these on our product page."

That was true for a while, but if it isn't true now and won't become true again some time soon then maybe someone should update the FAQ.

There are only membership options now, and the prices have gone up. Paypal charges the merchant a processing fee for every transaction, plus a withdrawal fee when the merchant takes money out. So someone probably figured out that small donations might actually be more costly to have.

I'm thinking they are blocking everyone from an "any" amount donation. They could try to set a minimum on one-time donations, but that might not be popular with potential donors.

Found it. Sort-of...
There is still a (somewhat hidden) way to make big donations.

From the "Support Us" screen, start by selecting a recurring donation, like $48/year, add it to your cart, go to check-out, then increase the quantity. You can add bunches of years if you have the money.

I *hope* they don't recurr because I really, really want to do this only WHEN I WANT TO, not when some computer decides to repeat it.

I'm not even sure I could stop it if the computer decides to go berserk and repeat everything forever. The FAQ says"
Q: "How do I cancel?"
A: "Go to ‘My subscription’ –> Click ‘view’ button –> Press ‘cancel’ button"
But I can't find "My subscription" any more.

It looks to me (as a former programmer) like they changed part of the system without thinking thru how it fit with the rest of their system.

@db-staff Perhaps you could spend some of the money I just sent you to tweak the system again. I'd really like to be able to make ONE-TIME donations of any size without having to resort to tricks or worrying that the computer will try to repeat it later.

@lordcobol

Maybe give a day or two for your subscription to show up.

My current annual membership is under "My subscriptions". Given that the annual membership price is now $48 instead of $18, I have no idea which will be the renewal price.

1

Silly me. I was looking for "My Subscriptions" under the "Support Us" page, not under my profile.
My donation from a couple days ago showed a Next Payment date next year, so I cancelled it and now it shows as "Pending Cancellation". We'll see how that works. I'm trying to cancel next year's payment, not claw back the money I just sent them, and if things go well I'll make an additional donation before that next-year-automatic date. I just want any big gifts to be completely under my control and not automatic.
@db-staff

0

My two previous one-time gifts did not show any Next Payment date. So they used to do things they way I like and now there is and they changed to something I don't especially like. How much I don't like it will depend on how the cancellation turns out to work. I don't appreciate the extra step of having to cancel a few days later to make sure a one-time payment is really one-time, and if cancelling tries to take back the money I recent sent that's also bad.

Some background on my reasoning -- if I ever suffer any financial catastrophe and I'm short of money I won't want to worry about cancelling any automatic payments that are big enough to matter while I'm busy dealing with whatever catastrophe it was.

FWIW, there are some other web sites that I would sort-of like to support (although not as much as DB) but they don't have a way to make payments that don't repeat automatically, so I don't send them anything and DB gets some of the extra money I save.

The school bullying/school violence accusations/scandals against Korean celebs/personalities/K-pop idols continued since last two weeks ago including those who posted online community on Nate Pann.

KBS Friday drama Dear M was indefinitely postponed (planned to premiere today - February 25, 2021) due to lead actress Park Hye-soo's bullying accusations by those who posted online and now became a legal battle.

Mingyu of Seventeen faced not only bullying accusations but also faced sexual assault allegations and I hoped that Mingyu will retire indefinitely from entertainment business and his own career like Seungri did.

Jo Byeong-gyu already altered his schedules (including his variety show appearances) but for the planned second season of The Uncanny Counter, I think he will replace by another actor soon if bullying/school violence against him by someone posted online will not stop yet unless he finally break his silence.

Hyunjin (Stray Kids) and Kihyun (Monsta X) also involved in bullying scandals.

I've been following the bullying scandals and it's been so tiring.
I feel sorry for Park Hye Soo's victims and all the people involved with Dear M. Especially since she was the lead, I have a feeling they're going to end up not airing the show or at least airing it online or something.
The M*ngyu allegations are disgusting and if they are true I don't want to see his face ever again. His fans are already mobilizing in support of him and I just want to never hear his name honestly if he has actually done the stuff he's been accused of.

Without knowing the details and just speaking from my gut, I'd say that if people are coming forward, they must be listened to.

If people didn't speak out before, it could have been because until now probably nobody was taking these accusations seriously, pretty much the same way it happened to many women before the Metoo movement.
As I said, I don't know the details for each case, but if at schools the institutional culture enables violence (which, according to what we see on kdramas, seems very much to be the case), aggressions must be pretty common and I believe most of these accusations are true.
With this I don't mean these people's careers should be terminated because they were pricks when they were kids - god knows I did things I regret to this day. Every case must be dealt with according to the severity of the aggressions.

Where I live, there are specific laws to deal with school bullying and schools need to follow a procedure too if there are suspicions. For starters, there is a difference between an aggression between students ("equals") and bullying. For a situation to be considered bullying three conditions must be fulfilled: there must be a power imbalance between the kids, the attacks take place repeatedly, and they specifically target that person. Some of the situations that people are putting forth don't fit the bullying description, they are mere aggressions. To put it clearly, not all a**holes are bullies. Puting people on the line for stuff they did as kids doesn't sit right with me. Kids grow and sometimes come to realize their mistakes, it's not the same as grown people.
As I see it, more than punishing bullies, we should be focusing on eliminating the bullying

I agree with you. I have no trouble believing the accusations, and if true, some of these people should face severe consequences. Bringing up stuff from elementary school is a bit overkill for me though. Kids can be little s**** especially in groups. Many grow up and grow out of it though perhaps that is less likely for enabled celebs. Like you said, I can't help wishing the multiple contingents would come together and turn their ire to the culture and institutions that enable and even encourage this type of behavior.

On a drama note, I mentioned this on the wall, but I was surprised/not surprised at how many accounts alleged slapping. I was bullied in school, but I've never been slapped. I don't know anyone who has been slapped. For me, slapping was just something that happened on Days of Our Lives when someone was caught cheating. When The Penthouse premiered, I watched one episode and then turned it off, disgusted by all of the slapping: Kids slapping each other, adults slapping each other, adults slapping kids. Maybe people should also question what messages have been taken from these kinds of dramas.

This is surprising. Do you really know no-one who has been slapped?
I was also bullied mostly by other kids from my former church. Slapping, throwing stones at me, chasing me with a dog included. I mean, I'm really glad this wasn't the case for you! It's just surprising that it seems so far away from reality.

@flyingcolours Thank you, I'm really fine now. I moved to another city to study when I was 19 and learnt that there are a lot of people who aren't this horrible. But even now, 11 years after I moved out, I don't like to visit the town where I grew up.
It's maddening when I see things like this happen to so many people and I really hope that things change. Well, at least we can start and stand up for the victims, when we see them.

1

I grew up in the Midwest a long, long time ago. As a kid, if there was a bully problem adults seemed to think it was your own problem to solve (like a right of passage). You could either take it, throw back the insults or have a school yard fight (even if you lost you gained respect). The other way to gain status was to be good in sports then the jocks/cool click would validate your status against bullies.

My understanding of Korean culture is that honor and fairness are critical pillars of society and order. Education is sacred. No one should mess with another's education. Anything that brings dishonor to institutions or others, like school bullying, should create personal shame and personal accountability.

But I think corrective action needs to be taken at the time of the wrongful incidents. How else are you going teach young children and teenagers the difference between right and wrong?

Came back to this thread because yesterday I wanted to cram too much into a single comment, and ended up feeling uneasy for not saying the most important.
Here it goes: if you were a victim of any type of abuse, I believe you and my heart is with you. I'm sorry somebody hurt you. You have the right to speak out, and to be listened to.
When I say that I don't agree with people's careers being cancelled because of that, I mean that these situations shouldn't be handled like a public trial based on rumors - they must be handled by authorities and proportional (and hopefully repairing) amends should be sought after. Most importantly: people, be kind to each other

Hello beanies {{waving}} What I’m watching: Hello, Me! (quirky, I like 17 yr old Ban Ha-Ni and it was cool when the sister saw her sister/sister - there is potential for this drama to be fun); My First First Love which I hadn’t seen when it came out but decided I needed some Ji Soo in a contemporary role while simultaneously watching him in the sageuk River Where the Moon Rises (did you know this is 20 eps long).

I can’t get over Ro Woon as Chae Hyun-Seung in She Would Never Know – he is truly my new bias, charming in a way that raises the bar for boyfriends everywhere. Eric Nam, the “Nation’s Boyfriend” might have his title stolen from him by Ro Woon who, as Hyun-Seung, is everything you could want as an ideal type. I mean, when Song-Ah asked how long she should stay (at his apartment) since it was already late, and he leaned over with an “I don’t know” and a kiss, I melted.

I couldn’t get into Vincenzo after watching ep 1, but I’ll give it another try when I’m in the mood.

Variety – For those who had fun watching Heart Signal seasons 2 and 3, there is a new variety show that just started called Friends. It is a reality show where some of the cast from both seasons meet up. Ep 1 of Friends was okay, a bit slow, but there is potential. Late evening cold winter night entertainment, you know?

Rain is making the rounds on variety shows, Immortal Songs 2 (it was great), Ask Us Anything (with JYP, it was kooky), and My Little Old Boy (he was adorable).

What else? Working, trying to get in lots of walks as long as it’s not too icy, doing some art (I’m in a traveling art journal group where we do an art piece in a journal, mail it to the next person book rate so it’s cheap, and in the end. we get back our original journal with 8 or 9 original pieces of art from other artists. It’s really fun). I’m lazy about cooking these days, kinda throw stuff together for dinner, usually eat a salad or pear with cheese and crackers for lunch, and coffee, coffee, coffee. I told a friend the other day, “I think I’m okay,” – being unsure how to gauge my overall health after over a year of covid distancing, different work arrangements, and not going anywhere. But I feel pretty balanced and that’s why I need my brisk walks and exercise to stay on top of my helath! And on most days, a dose of sunshine even if I can see my breath - like right now there are snow flurries but partly sunny. How about you: looking back over the past year, are all the beanies out there doing okay – adjusting, reassessing, taking care? ♥owl

Hello, all:

Dropping by to wish everyone health, happiness, and freedom. I wonder what the world would have done without zoom during this pandemic. It certainly helped keep me sane. Tons of writing conferences, church services.

Dramas:
I'm watching four-ish kdramas right now
Vincenzo -- A drama with no good people in it except for the lawyer and the law enforcement guy whom no one believes. I had wanted dark and moody but this isn't it. I might drop it although i love SJK.

Sisyphus -- The writing leaves a lot to be desired. Heroine is supposed to be passionate and fierce which means she does a lot of stupid things. She's supposed to be an expert in all things warfare but she comes back to the past and starts reeling off, for no good reason, the winning lottery numbers. Innocent guy gets killed because of her stupidity and other innocent guy is being chased. Funniest of many unintentionally funny lines so far was said by the leader of the Control Bureau to his minions with guns drawn in broad daylight chasing heroine. "Put on your silencers, people are watching." So it's like that. But i love Cho Seung Woo. And the world building feels solid. Great concept but the need for danger and stunts makes for crappy execution. And Shin Min Ah's acting is weird for some reason.

Times -- This is slow but solid. I love Seojinnie and the story is good. Like Chronos with heroine's dad dead in the present and hero dead in the present, but hero must work with heroine in her timeline to save her dad and himself. Not a lot of stunts, and actress is a bit wooden but am thinking it's because she's a bit of a newbie. I'm liking it a lot.

Hello Me -- Fun, silly, poignant, melancholy. This is the best kdrama this season so far. Well-written, well-paced. Woman has an accident and on hospital bed is wishing to just die. But up appears in the next bed, her younger self. Younger self is overconfident, bitchy selfwilled and has a wicked tongue. All traits present heroine lacks. Younger self caused the death of her father but isn't aware of that. So younger self spends all her time berating older self for being ugly, poor, spineless. There are other characters, including a dumb and vain celebrity who was a bully who had a crush on the heroine in school.... Yes and we have a noona romance on our hands. Plus love this actress. Old-fashioned, noona romance, life-affirming. It's on #Netflix.

Cdramas--
My Heroic Husband -- silly and fun.
Rebel Princess -- Quick plot, lots of scheming. Zhang Ziyi is always posing. So it's acting as model pose. The director seems to be ultra aware of making every scene with her be about her beauty. Actor who plays her husband is quite good and he and many others give the story life, while ZZ drains it with all her beauty.

That's it. Have a great weekend, all.

I actually feel bad for the actors tbh. Wondering how they felt filming all those scenes... I hope it picks up though.

I honestly this the show is campy/fun/blockbuster. I do admit the teaser/trailer for this was more serious than it looked. But tbh, anything is better than the abomination that is Alice. There's still a level of intrigue/mystery in this show for me to continue. I do believe once the true bad guys/more can be revealed, things could get more intriguing.

The comments for this show are going to be something lol. I do admit that I'm a bit confused on CSW's involvement in this. I know he said he chose this after reading 6 episodes of this, and said he wants to choose work that he hopes he won't regret. Surely, I do hope this show does well ratings wise since JTBC and co put a lot of faith into this. That being said, I'm glad cast/crew are having a jolly good time in BTS clips. CSW is funny/charming in rl, he's having a blast which is nice!

Id still just use it to save Sirius and make Lily kick Severus in the balls and you k ow push Peter off a cliff. Its easier to reschedule me than it is to find a flipping vaccine.

I am just not a Sirius fan. I would save Lupin and Tonks, but you know, you can save who you want. The vaccine struggle is so real. Looking at when I'll be eligible and, ugh.

Im not trying for myself. Im taking the stance: Ill get it when I get it. In the meantime: mask. Social distance.

2

Social distancing forever for me....

Like the shirts and memes say, "I was social distancing before it was cool".

2

Congratulations on getting your father scheduled for his vaccine. I managed to get my mother scheduled just over a week ago. We had to go almost an hour from our home to find an opening!

I have to drive 2 hours from where I oive to pick him up, and then drive almost an hour away for his appointment. Its worth it. Hes excited to go back to work and be around people. Hes only left his hoise3 to check his mail and tske out his garbage since March. He told me last week has hasnt even been going to his drs appointments!

I will, thanks! Its just easier and less worrisome to get him taken care of first. And! He'll be able to do his own groceries, go to work, go to his drs appointments again. Itll free me up some.

4

We’re you able to schedule yourself as well? In many areas, those who take care of elderly relations also qualify for vaccines.

I didnt even try! Ill get vaccinated when it's my turn. Im higher risk but work with the public (thats resistant to wearing masks and social distancing) every.single.day and have for months now. If I was going to get it, I would have by now. My only hesitation is the deadlier uk strain is now in my county. But. Whatever. I'll be fine or I wont.

Hey beanies, Sisyphus is kind of annoyingly directed and edited, and the music is terrible, and I'm sorry I really like the actors but I gotta drop it.

Anyhow, the weather here is pretending it's spring, and I'm not falling for it. I will bask in some sunshine, but I will not let my guard down or take the extra hat and gloves out of my car just yet.

I only made it halfway through the first episode of Sisyphus before I gave up. /shrug

I've been resolutely ignoring the fact that the snow on our roof and deck is all gone. I've been fooled by February spring before, so never again, lol.

Hello! I hope everyone is doing okay. I've been watching a lot of dramas (probably not the best thing, but I'm a multi-tasker). I just finished When the Weather is Fine; it took me awhile to finish it because it's so sedate and slow. I liked its slice-of-life pacing, and the small town setting. The local characters, the bookstore (and its owner) were all great. I loved that the mountain behind the town had its own character too, drawing our store owner away when times were tough. My favorite character was played by Lee Jang-wook, an old man in a young man's body and completely adorable. He was the only one who knew what he wanted, and went for it, even though he's afraid of strong women. My only complaint is that they didn't spend enough time on Seo Kang-joon's character; he was the most interesting. I also felt Park Min-young's family issues were all linked to selfish reasons and a little disingenuous at times. All in all, it was fine, the local color making up for the coldness of reality.

Also watched True Beauty. One of these days, someone will let Cha Eun-woo have a nice, loving family, and he can smile all he wants. He did do bitter cold fairly well, but he rarely gets to show depth. At least he got to have a short drunk scene; he was a little more the Cha Eun-woo I know from ASTRO. Moon Ga-young and Hwang In-yeob saved that show, not gonna lie. I LOVED the role reversal with the sister and the teacher. Not a bad show, it was funnier than I thought it would be.

Speaking of role reversals... Lovestruck in the City. Or, Oblivious Women and the Men Who Love Them. I hate to keep using the word selfish, and maybe I'm showing my age lol, but dude, seriously. I felt bad for every guy in this show. Don't get me wrong: I've been on both sides of that kind encounter, and the outcome is messy no matter what. At least the show didn't shy away from that. Could've ended better, but it was fine.

Awaken... It was fun, and I was right there with wine for all the cheese this show flung at me.

And finally, Mr. Queen. Already on my rewatch list. Loved it. A friend decided she wasn't going to watch it due to its similarities to another show. Whatever. If that was the case, you wouldn't be able to watch ANY show. Shin Hye-sun was delightful, and I didn't know I needed to see two guys sparring with fans in my life. (Thank you, Na In-woo and Kim Jung-hyun. Thank you.)

There's more but I'mma stop here. Have a good weekend!

Cha Eun Woo is much more 3D as a cast member on Master in the House. He’s brainy, athletic, thoughtful, actor, competitor, team player, handsome and charming. I mean he walked the rest of them through calculus like it was a breeze! And history, too.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Hope you're all well.

The big news here is that I get a new co-worker next week, which means I can finally stop doing the work of two people. I'm so relieved.

Nothing huge happening drama-wise, I guess. I'm catching up on Mr. Queen, but that's about it.

I have kind of a weird question to ask. A lot of k-drama plots involve a meet-cute where the FL is willingly in a room or a taxi or some other relatively close situation with the ML who is a total stranger at that point. Isn't this a bit weird considering how careful most women are (especially now) around men they don't know? Is "stranger danger" not a thing in Korean culture? Or is this just a case of the drama universe requiring some suspension of disbelief?

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I was going to write a happy OT post for a change, but I just got the news that warrior friend landed on ICU again.😢 She has many health problems, so now that the cancer is gone the others can act up again it seems.😢

And I was having such a great week! Formations do not resume until March 8th, so I could actually properly work for a whole week and relax in the evenings because I had no homework to prepare. Everything else was put on hold around new year, so you can imagine the two-month-long amount of backreading and scrolling through the fan wall, DB articles and so on I had/still have to do this week and next week…I actually started hoping for better times again…

I am sick of this. Whoever you are, just leave my loved ones be and let me finish my internship in peace. Please.😢

This is a very sad weekend for me, beanies. I just got the news that Frank Suarez died and I followed him in his channel, because he specialized in helping the Spanish community to learn how to restore our metabolism and be healthy. He made us feel so close like family, and now he is gone. It was horrible and there is a mystery behind his departing. I feel hurt, I have cried so much, because I felt he was a friend and I will miss him.
This is how you get to love somebody even though you never met him personally. Because even in the distance a person's message and actions can reach us deeply, because even in the distance there can be a connection, and isn't that what we are all looking for?? Someone to connect with, someone who cares.
Today I am broken, I haven't cried that much since the days of praying for my dad's surgery, or the day I lost one of my best friends due to crime.
I know I am writing something sad. I hope I am not ruining your mood.
Only, if you guys can, please pray for Us, Frank Suarez's family, friends and fans. We're all devastated. It is a sad time for the Spanish community. We lost a great man.

I think he knows that he is so much loved by some people and that is what makes all the differences. I hope he goes to a good place and that I’m sending my virtual hugs to you.

May this day be a little bit better with the community here.
