Last year’s “Parasite” breakthrough at the Oscars did push Korean Entertainment into mainstream consciousness of Hollywood and American media companies. But there is still a major cultural bias that needs to be overcome.

The immigrant film “Minari” has been nominated for best foreign language film at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. The film has been a hit in the ongoing U.S. award circuit, bagging a number of trophies from film festivals and critics associations, including the best jury and audience awards at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Over the past few months, “Minari” has been at the center of controversy in the U.S., as HFPA categorized it as a foreign-language film, saying that it was not eligible for best picture as its dialogue is mostly in Korean. It is being treated (and trapped) into being considered a “foreign” picture only.

Many Korean Americans and others of Asian origin in the U.S. entertainment circle have complained about the decision, saying that “Minari” is about an American family and made by a U.S. director and production company.

The “best” picture for American film awards should not have a qualification of being “English speaking only.” It is such a near-sighted view.

In this community, we enjoy and adapted to watching Korean entertainment with subtitles. It does not bother us if we do not fully understand the context of the actors actions or cultural nuances. We have had to learn to understand such meanings to fully appreciate the dramas. I guess some people cannot do two things at once when viewing a foreign language film. When I was in Seoul in 2018, I went to a megaplex to see "Your Name," a Japanese anime film with Korean subtitles. I did not know either Japanese or Korean but I still enjoyed the movie and experience (I would later view the English dub).

This view of non-English films as “foreign” has been a consistent problem for the Academy (and other film awards bodies). For example, the 2001 film “The Warrior” could not be the UK’s official entry to the Oscars, because (despite being a British production), the film itself is in Hindi, a language not considered indigenous to the UK.

In the American context, these sorts of debate make even less sense. Is English an indigenous language in the United States? If the answer is yes, then so is Korean, right?

Required fields are marked *

The annoying part is HFPA consists of "foreign press". So, I would assume they all come from countries with English as their second language. It's ridiculous.

However, Golden Globes is not a very credible judge of quality films, I believe. The only reason they are popular is because they get to invite the A-list stars, and they do give more surprising winners. Still, it's not the awards show that will guarantee the Best Picture win come Oscars time.

Required fields are marked *

Me too. But I heard that Korean audience kinda hated the premiere. What exactly do they expect from a time traveling drama? A badass FL who shows off the middle finger with a straight face and a very smart and smooth ML who stops a plain crash while video calling his friend is consider as bad? It's kinda unrealistic, yes, but come on, it's all for fun!!!

Really? I don’t know about Korean audience but for me the show exceeded my expectation (perhaps because I didn’t have any from the beginning 😅.) I love Jo Seung-woo and he seems to be very smart in picking the roles. As for the first two eps, I like PSH more and couldn’t resist thinking that the same thing might happen here as it happened with me with the latest project of Shin Se-kyung in Run On.

Eagerly waiting for the next week eps.

Omo! I did hear some say it was un-realistic and silly at times. Do you've links perhaps on their thoughts? Perhaps, they thought it would be more serious (tone wise?).

I don't have any links to any kind of articles but I stumbled upon some comments people left on Instagram saying how Koreans were disappointed despite the steady ratings the show received. And yes, they were disappointed because they thought it would be more serious and dark.

I really enjoyed episode one of JTBC’s SISYPHUS: THE MYTH and will be watching episode two tonight.
Here is a RATINGS REPORT preview. Imo SISYPHUS’s ratings are not bad for a cable outfit:
Episode 1: 5.608%
Episode 2: 6.677%

2020 - Sep-Nov i talked about natural disasters and how i survived hot summer days aka self imposed physical and mentally painful days and i had talked about the same "what if scenario" applied to significant population, naah not significant - mostly a city and for that i had chosen - Floods.
You not floods when you have such beautiful and dangerous whether at your disposal - snow it is -

Snow giving competition to floods - no electricity, almost no drinking water, almost no food. Whether always is same.
Enjoy. Enjoy it hard. Not my prediction becoming true.
More likely what which could been manmade is actually mother nature at work.
Things could have become much more entertaining if resources are limited and demand is at peak. Then you get see facemasks break and an real character emerge.

Present india is more like russia or china?
Turkey is more like russia?

Where would you fit brazil in between?
How many of them are the real burma?
What it is? Oligarchy, plutocracy or democratic dictatorship?

Interesting times. Fun if you love challenge and can survive
What i had expected from 2021 is what suitably being delivered.

I have wonderful friends who've recently become kdrama fans! It is such a joy to have others to share and discuss my love❤ of dramas.

The joke is....every time they ask me for my top five favorite dramas I give a constantly-changing list, ...or rather than five there are eight! I just can't limit myself to just 5🤪

So, what are your top five dramas? Which ones would you pick to have on that desert island?

On an island, hmmmm:

1. Ojakgyo Brothers (I can only see the sea so I want to see a lot of green things like fruit, veggies and gardens)
2. Romance is a Bonus Book I think it should be satisfying to watch it when on a vacation.
3. Run On? I used to hate it at first but now I’m thinking of it more and more fondly. It’s quite refreshing and I like the FL and her respect for self.
4. Weightlifting Fairy? It’s a delight and there are many extremely funny moments.
5. Live Up to Your Name. One of the best rom-coms full of heart.

Not a kdrama, but I'm still in The Untamed rabbit hole, so at the moment I would certainly pick this one.
If only kdramas I pick
1. Chief Kim
2. Be Melodramatic
3. Another Oh Hae Young
These are dramas I could watch over and over again.

There is no climbing out of The Untamed rabbit hole. One of the best book adaptations I've ever seen and the son of a b!tches did it in a country where the censorship kills basically everything. As a fan of MDZS I'd thought, no way they can pull this off. Just look at Wang Yibo, he is no Lan Zhan lol. . and then I got slapped by chemistry, acting talent and a script that stays so close to the source material, it is unreal. Literal quotes out of the book and the iconic "I wanna bring him back to Gusu. Bring him, hide him" are you kidding me? The Untamed is not perfect but keeps the tragedy, bittersweetness and most importantly, the heart of the book. WangXian's chemistry is cheff's kiss, no one can deny they are more than sworn brothers, it is so in your face. Yibo and Xiao Zhan are great. I see no embarrassment or downplaying WangXian's relationship when they act. I could gush about The Untamed a whole day.

@beantown,
This is a tough question. So for now I will go with from the early days:
1. HEALER. It brought into kdrama land.
2. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
3. I REMEMBER YOU/HELLO MONSTER
I pull this out every couple of years. IRY/HM has my all-time favorite cast party pic (adult Min/child Min) (PBG/Hong Eun-taek):
https://kdra-bogome2.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/bogummy20190728-016.jpg

Dropping onto today's Open Thread to say thanks for all the encouragement to go for that job I was interested. I gathered all my courage into my hands, and I applied this week! There's no guarantee I'll even get an interview, but it felt good just to toss my hat into the ring AND it's inspired me to apply for a few other positions I saw that look like a good fit, too. So if nothing else, it was the catalyst to get me on the way to hopefully a more fulfilling job.

This weekend the weather is meant to be fine (sorry, couldn't resist!), and I've got big plans to go tromping through a park and maybe even sit on a bench to read for a bit. Things are far from perfect in the world right now, but today somehow I'm hopeful that better days are ahead. At least spring (in my hemisphere) is!

happy friday beanies!
school keeps assigning more and more work TT and it KEEPS SNOWING HERE and i am sick of it now. how i miss good old snow days without school...

i also happen to be in a bit of a drama slump-- i've been dragging on MA because i have 3 more episodes and don't want it to end, but i think i should just watch them (i've been watching since November, but it's so worth it). saw ep 9 of CP with @midnightramyeon the other day which was SUPER FUN, so maybe that will help me out of my slump!! for some reason, ITR hasn't clicked as much, i watched the school nurse files and the first ep of start up too, but neither drama has really grabbed my heart (maybe i should watch ep 2 of start up?)

does anyone have any really good slice of life dramas? you guys obviously know that's my favorite genre, but in case you're new or can't tell from my screen name or avatar, my life revolves around reply 1988, and i love all the shows directed by shin wonho and written by lee woojung. i can't find other shows i love as much as those (besides my ajusshi, but i think that'll be hard to replace too : ( ), but if anyone has a slice of life drama they loved, please, help me out of this slump!!!

Yeah, I've also noticed that people are tending to fall into different camps on that - I actually was super attached, though it was a delayed reaction. I started it as a fun watch, I liked a lot of the lines (Mi-joo in particular) cracked, but really wasn't that invest. And then about 6-7 episodes it, I started going through this revolving door of identifying with each of the four main leads over the course of the rest of the drama, and by the end I was all in (to the extent that I still kind of miss it). But maybe that's the beauty of it? You can take what you want from it, as much as you want? I really enjoyed it.

Hi open threaders! I totally forgot that the open thread was today and I’m just getting on now. We had a pretty cold week here where I am colder than usual. Today the thermostat read 2°F when I left my garage. Burr. Besides for shoveling snow and trying to slide down our driveway, We have not done much. As a result, I’ve had ample time to watch the new dramas. Also, old dramas.

We started and finished “faded to love you” this past week and have been re-watching favorite scenes. Not so much me, but my husband. He is super obsessed with Jang Nara. It’s her thoughtfulness in the drama and just her whole voice and demeanor that he fell in love with. Hi, however, cannot get enough of Jang hook Hyuk. Geez, that guy can act. So now, I’m thinking about starting Chuno. I can watch two sageuks at the same time can’t I?

Speaking of, Moon River is entertaining so far. However, I’m not seeing the two leads together quite yet. Kim so Hyun is so serious.Really, like a heart attack.

And rounding out my period dramas right now is Rebel princess, the Chinese drama. I’m on episode 38 of like 1 million. It really does feel like 1 million at this point.

I’m also still watching unrequited love. I go back-and-forth on this one. But I have no idea how many more episodes I have but I’m almost sure that it’s going to be worth it at the end. I’ve also decided that @bebeswtz Is going to watch DEAR M with me whenever it premieres. I am going to desensitize her to campus dramas. I will have many Epi pens available for her to use.

And rounding out my drama week this week, I started hello? It’s me.I can’t not watch anything with Kim Young Kwang so it is going to be my ride- or die drama. My mom has watched tWo KYK dramas in the past two weeks and is ready for another.

And a conversation between my husband and myself.

Husband: I don’t even know why I liked her. (Referring to Jang Nara.)
Me: Oh, I know exactly why you like her. It’s because she’s soft spoken and takes care of her husband, unlike me.
Husband:*blushing* *whisper’s* dammit, you’re right.

Moral of the story: I know what my husband likes.
Second moral: I’m nice some of the time.
Third moral: Have a great weekend. Stay warm and safe, and hopefully you’re connected to a part of the grid it gets power during a snowstorm.

Hi, ally! I didn’t think it was possible to live even more like a hermit but this week at 0 degrees has me thinking of all the ways I don’t really have to leave the house. Although I got more exercise than usual shoveling snow ❄️❄️❄️
Have a good week!

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

My parents and I had to quarantine and get tested twice this week, because my sister tested positive last weekend. Fortunately she is doing all right and everyone tested negative the first time. I admit that I was more worried about how I was going to explain and solve this at work, with all the different formations in my schedule this week. Twice my boss allowed me to leave in between formations for an hour or two to get tested, on the condition that I would start work earlier and finish later to compensate for the short absence during the day. I am relieved at the discretion, because the covid regulations at work are pretty overzealous at times. Meanwhile my parents tested negative again and hopefully so do I tomorrow.🙏🏻

Another thing that I am carefully anticipating are better formation conditions. My next big formation got scheduled for March and April, but it turns out to be slightly more than a dozen morning classes spread out over two months because of the Easter holidays in between. I have 3 morning classes every week. That is two days and three afternoons a week to get my actual work done and hopefully practice what I have been taught in class then in order to struggle less while studying later. It gives me hope that the previous formation was the big bad in comparison.

And what I am anticipating right now, are two weeks without any formations!🥳 This break has been long overdue, with all the bad stuff that has been popping up every week ever since 2021 started. Sleep remains the main priority, but I hope to spend 2-3 weekends catching up on things that have nothing to do with my job and mentally recharge myself for the challenges ahead!💪

So I just got watching Strongest Deliveryman on Netflix. A few thoughts:

1. Enjoyed the show. Very interesting story depicting the fight of the poor and struggling vs the rich corps.
2. Netflix needs to get better English sub writers. The grammar was atrocious at times.
3. Is it just me or does Go Kyung-pyo looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

Which shows is everyone watching currently? There were so many premiers this week that I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed with which ones I should watch. I've just finished true beauty, run on and Mr Queen- really didn't want to say good-bye to this one ;(
These dramas have been fun to watch but the ones that I remember most are always the ones that explore important ideas like humanity or ones that have great character development. Perhaps its because the schooling system has wired my brain to think like this... But I can't help but feel that mindlessly watching fluff is a waste of my time when I'm a student. Does anyone else feel this way?

Nope! I think watching fluff is imperative when you have to be so serious about school subjects (and the world). You need some breaks! And it’s a rare fluffy kdrama that doesn’t have something meaningful to say about the human condition. You pretty much always learn something from a kdrama 👍🏼 So, carry on and enjoy them is my advice 😁

Hmmm, maybe because I’m not a student , mindlessly watching fluff is relaxing for me. I did a guest post back when stroopwafel had monthly themes that highlighted some of my multitasking abilities while watching some dramas that don’t require 100% of my attention. I think that helps with the feeling that absolutely nothing else is getting done. I do give myself late hours just for watching dramas though and I notice I reserve that time for more intense dramas where I don’t want to miss a thing. as a student, I’m guessing you’re concerned about watching dramas instead of studying so that’s a different dilemma (and one I’d have a hard time with)!

Fluffy drama and novels are the stuff of daydreams. Everything studies are not. Balance is everything in life. Go where the fluff takes you!

i'm a student! i think it depends on what you call fluff, and what type of dramas you like.

my favorite drama is reply 1988, followed by shin won ho's other dramas, and i would actually say i love my ajusshi as much as r88 which is pretty HUGE for me. i think to break it down better, my ajusshi is the most brilliant drama I've ever seen. sky castle is another drama that i'd call brilliant, and so is itaewon class. these three dramas are more real, raw, and closer to the human condition. but if i had to name one drama i'd pick for the rest of my life, it would be reply 1988.

reply 1988 isn't exactly FLUFF, but it is more happy-go-lucky, and slice of life compared to other dramas. and above else, it is comfortable. it is like home for me in that i know the characters and plot so well. although it may not have the brilliance of the other three dramas i mentioned, it makes me smile like no other drama has (and i don't know if there's another drama that will). there are so many other dramas that are just plain fun for me (and as i'm watching my ajusshi rn, i'm watching 3 other dramas to lighten the mood LOL), and maybe they don't teach me about life or deeper stuff, but they make me happy!! and that's what matters.

i took a break from dramas in the beginning of the school year to work and focus better, and i guess while i was productive, when i got back into watching dramas, i realized how happy they make me. even though i could be using my time in other ways (that my parents would probably appreciate more LOL), i like watching dramas at the end of the day ◡̈

i don't know if this answered your question and i kinda went off (SORRY LOL), but i hope it makes sense!
