[Staff Spotlight] Get to know quirkycase

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

My username is just a nerdy linguistics reference. As for my avatar…all hail Yeo-chi.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

Like many, my first drama ever was Boys Over Flowers, although I could only handle its brand of crazy to about the halfway point. I was intrigued enough to try again which led me to my second drama Secret Garden. That one I did manage to finish. And here I am eight years later.

Name a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

The most memorable job I’ve had was teaching English in Japan. I’d always wanted to live abroad, and one day I decided to just go for it. I had never been to Japan and didn’t speak any Japanese, so it was an intense experience. But I had a blast and learned a lot during that year living outside of my comfort zone.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

I honestly can’t think of any off the top of my head. I tend to shy away from drama in my real life and lead a pretty quiet (i.e. boring) existence.

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?

As one of the new minions, I’ve finished covering a whole two dramas so far. But I’ll have to go with my first, the underrated Diary of a Prosecutor. It was a low-pressure recap experience since the drama didn’t have much buzz or a large viewership. That made it perfect for a nervous newbie. I really enjoyed it, and it’ll always be memorable for being my first drama as a recapper.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I usually go for dramas that are offbeat, dark, intense or have a unique premise that is liable to go down in flames. I’m also a fan of slice-of-life style stories.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

I wouldn’t say I dislike any genre as a whole, but I don’t watch much of the tear-wringing melo variety. Oh, and anything too cutesy is a no.

What drama character would you want to be?

I think I’ll go with Chun Song-yi from You From Another Star. Her boldness and unabashed self-expression are something to behold. As a naturally shy person, I’d love to experience what that’s like.

What was your major in school?

In undergrad, it was psychology. My master’s degree is in a field of linguistics.

What’s a random skill you have?

After wracking my brain, I have come to the conclusion that I, unfortunately, do not have many practical skills. Thanks to the quarantine, though, I’ve recently picked up a couple of new hobbies like cross-stitching and playing the bamboo flute. Although using the word “skill” at this stage is grossly misleading.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

Buffy! I’m a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. There aren’t many shows I re-watch once, let alone several times, but Buffy is an exception. It’s like my comfort food.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

I don’t watch a lot of interviews or delve into celebrities’ personal lives much, so it’s kind of hard for me to say. Maybe IU? She’s had an interesting career, and from the snippets I’ve seen of her, she comes across like a hardworking, thoughtful person who’s chill to be around.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing?

Hmm … sloth, I guess? I definitely enjoy my free time and go through periods where I’m less productive than I’d like. Of course, dramas have noooo role in that whatsoever. Nope.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

A group of bratty, self-important teens with uber rich parents are infiltrated by a masked freedom fighter working to lead an underground revolution to take out the chaebols and liberate the poor students being manhandled. The vigilante is helped by a conflicted poor girl a pair of frenemy boys think is purty, and she fights for her people in the midst of wrist pulling and cohabitation hijinks with the ringleader of the chaebol children.

It was! I lived and worked in Gunma prefecture in central Japan. It's a beautiful countryside region, but it was close enough to Tokyo that I had the best of both worlds.

Hey Quirkycase! I really enjoyed your Diary of a Prosecutor recaps! Also thanks for your regular updates on What We're Watching.. sometimes you watch dramas that aren't being recapped or watched by many such as The Cursed so its good to see your views on them.

@quirkycase! I looove buffy, but being the loser I am I never actually got past season 4. I like your description of preferred dramas. I too dig similar dramas lately, among them being That Psychmetric Guy, Nice Guy/Innocent Man, and My Country. But I find it fluctuates according to my mood. Great to know more about you.

You should definitely finish it if you get the chance! Seasons 5-7 of Buffy are the best, in my opinion.

You know...that's tempting and not a good idea in the midst of my rn studies because I'm defn gonna get hooked and become an emo queen and never get anything done. But I might one day 😉

Diary of a Prosecutor was your very first recap? Wow! I wouldn't have guessed. I thoroughly enjoyed your recaps for that series. And you're doing a great job with TKEM, pointing out what worked and what is not working for you personally. I don't think recappers have to like or pretend to like the dramas they are working on. So glad you're on DB.

You really went for the recapping extremes in your three dramas. Two that were loved by a small Beanie group and then Eternal PPL. Thank you for the quick and thoughtful recaps!

First of all, I just want to thank you the recaps in Diary of a Prosecutor. I loved the drama, it was my happy pill of the week while airing. Even when the show was dealing with very serious subjects (home abuse, discrimination, gaming, bullying) it always made me smile. And if that was your first recap... wow... I'm even more impressed.

And here you have another Buffy / Angel (and Josh Weddon in general) fan. It doesn't matter how many years have been since I first heard of Sunnydale. It's the place I always want to return (I must be crazy, haha).

The hated one could also be Heirs. As for the other one, my first guess was Gaksital, too.

Buffy was my entry into drama land....led me to Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and on and on. Fave seasons of BtVS were 4 and 5 but loved ‘em all.
