[Staff Spotlight] Get to know missvictrix

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

My avatar is an easy one to explain — it’s Lee Hana in one of the zany teasers for High School King of Savvy. Something about that bright yellow eyeshadow, crazy hair, and red teardrops on the end of each eyelash screamed a kind of wacky Audrey Hepburn, and it spoke to me.

My username is a little more complicated/nerdy. Back in the good old days when English had more nouns with a femine and masculine version, masculine words that ended with -tor (like aviator and curator) ended with -trix in their feminine form (so, aviatrix and curatrix). I love how it looks, I love how it sounds, and that is how Miss Victrix was born. You could say it’s part language nerd moment, and part self pep talk.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

I’ve shared my dramaland story when I talked about discovering Boys Before Flowers, my first drama. Did it make an “impression”? You bet. But it wasn’t until I had a few dramas under my belt that I began to understand the life-changing magic of dramaland. So, rather than call out a particular gateway drama, I think it was more of the process of discovering the world of dramas (and then pitching my tent there) that had the lasting impact on me.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

Librarian (doing my best to channel Rachel Weisz in The Mummy) and barista (I like coffee).

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?

I’m not a recapper per se, but I’m pretty proud of the baby version known as weecaps. I’ve covered some of the baddest dramas out there (and I do mean bad), but regardless of drama quality, I love the weekly conversational feeling of weecaps. I like to think of it as a book club meeting, where you meet for an hour and chat about a story. You can’t go line by line, obviously, but you can share thoughts, feelings, favorite moments, and of course, squees.

What drama genres do you especially like?

Anything and everything that’s not listed below.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Horror. Stories about Alzheimers. Procedurals with all procedure and no character development. Anything episodic and/or without a continuous plot line — spare me.

What drama character would you want to be?

What a delicious and yet unanswerable question.

What was your major in school?

English Literature, swiftly followed by grad school and a Library and Information Science degree. Then I dabbled in an MBA, MFA, and Graphics Design degree, none of which came to fruition. But I love school and I would be a professional lecture attender, essay writer, and thesis defender any day of the week. Alas, girl’s gotta earn a living.

What’s a random skill you have?

I can punch a heavy bag pretty well.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

It’s been so long since I watched anything in English I don’t feel like I can answer this one. However, long before the dramaland vacuum, I loved long BBC miniseries and adaptations of classic novels.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

My brain automatically reads this as “who is your latest drama crush that you’d like to stare at in real life” (sorry) — and that would definitely be Joo Ji-hoon right now. But I don’t think I would really want to spend an hour with him, or any Hallyu celebrity. More than the celebrities, I like the world of dramas and their stories. So maybe it would be easier to answer which drama character I would like to spend an hour with? Imma need more paper.

Lovely to meet you @missvictrix! I enjoy your essays and weecaps a lot even though I don't usually end up watching the same shows. The language geek in me also appreciates your Latin username.

Thank youuu! Btw I'd love to hear some ideas from everyone for new articles/essays. What do our Beanies want to chat about most?

I don't know if you've already covered this, but an interesting topic could be: what makes a good ending. Several of us feel that it is very hard to find a drama with a satisfying ending nowadays, and we are not sure why. Sometimes we expect the drama to do one thing and become frustrated when it doesn't go in that direction. Too often I lose interest in the last third or final stretch of the drama, oddly enough, after the OTP is finally together!

Another topic: yesterday on the fanwall we realised that dramas make us cry, but for different reasons. I found that interesting.

How about the elephant in the room: how Netflix is changing the way we watch dramas? This would be a more historically-focused essay.

That's me - clams and holes. It's terrifying to admit but LMH's wild unrequited love for me might be a step up from Forest.

I have never seen such a brave soul that makes fun and creative weecaps of most of the shows I wouldn't even watch. I really enjoyed reading your well-written weecaps of APOYM 💚 and your gold snarky review of Born Again.

Great to meet you @missvictrix. I really enjoy your weecaps and it's nice to see you have such variety of qualifications. It provides the wider horizon to actually see the different angles of dramas and also see the same drama with different angles!!!

Nice to know more about you @missvictrix, I rarely go on weecaps but I love that it came on DB to discuss dramas that are not being recapped. That is one hell of a skill I'd love to have!

I hate to be repetitive, because I say it all the time, but I love your essays!

Haha, I can relate to your loving school. People are impressed with my degrees, but it was really just me being lazy and not wanting to be out in the real world. I'd stay in school forever if they'd let me.

Yes to being a student forever and to BBC dramas from the classics! I love your wicked sense of humor, @missvictrix , but also your thoughtful musings on our relationship with dramas. Keep up the good work!

Hey missvictrix, now that I know the meaning behind your name, I probably spell it correctly. I love ypur essays, they analyze a topic from such depth and literary lens. Also ditto on liking being a student and not being able to watch shows that are procedurals or episodic. That's exactly the reason why we watch dramas because they are not episodic. On that note, I must check if you have any view about Hospital Playlist because even if it's great, it is episodic with no story or end goal but it's weirdly working for me.

And thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and wittiness in the weecaps. You make coming here so much more enjoyable.

Probably not quite as much fun as it is reading your weecaps though.

Loving the Rachel Weisz in the mummy reference. Iconic. Also, you’re the current staff member who most captures old DB vibes. I feel like you would’ve gotten on fabulously with Headsno2.

Hi @missvictrix, so good to know you! I came across your weecaps and posts in Dramabeans before and thought we have pretty similar taste/view when it comes to Korean Drama. I love your witty comments, and trust me, they save me from going into murky territories sometimes (talking about Born Again, even Jang Ki Yong won't be able to save it). Appreciate your hard works! Keep going!

The male "tor" and female "trix" endings actually come from Latin. Trust me on this- I had a lot of Latin. Although English is a Germanic language Latin actually contributed more words to it than any other language.

@missvictrix Running in here late. How did I miss this? I love your weecaps. I am your biggest fan. I tend to get glassy-eyed after reading lengthy recaps, but your weecaps are simply brilliant and original, witty and thoughtful and insightful.

Keep the weecaps coming, @missvictrix! They're a riot to read, and such entertainment in themselves. Most of the time, they're a substitute for watching the drama itself. :D

Your username also reminded me of Asterix comix I loved and grew up with, and the pseudo-Gaulish character names (with -ix endings) they have. My friends and I would come up with similar names for ourselves too.
