SBS mystery No One Knows releases new character posters with Kim Seo-hyung, Ryu Deok-hwan
by tccolb
New character posters have been released for SBS’s new mystery drama No One Knows featuring its main cast: Kim Seo-hyung (SKY Castle), Ryu Deok-hwan (Special Labor Inspector Jo), Park Hoon (Haechi), and rookie actor Ahn Ji-ho.
The story is centered around the character played by Ahn Ji-ho. A young student in junior high, he is one day found unconscious after falling from the roof of a hotel. Everyone is quick to write it off as a suicide attempt, but the circumstances are suspicious. While the majority turn a blind eye, however, there are two people in Ahn’s life who decide to take a stand in support of him: his upstairs neighbor Kim Seo-hyung and his homeroom teacher Ryu Deok-hwan. Although the two may not consider themselves to be good grown-ups or good people, they are both driven by the desire to not be a bad person to Ahn Ji-ho and they team up to uncover the truth.
The newly released posters give us a glimpse of the different characters’ personalities and traits, and their place in the story. With Ahn Ji-ho, we see foreshadowing of what is to come and his tagline reads, “If something bad happens to me, I wouldn’t want anyone to know.”
The character Kim Seo-hyung plays is police officer Cha Young-jin, who is team lead of the investigations unit on the police force. She’s been living in the same building as Ahn Ji-ho for 7 years now and quickly became his hero after she saves his mom from an assault incident. Although normally guarded in personality, she develops a soft spot for Ahn Ji-ho as their friendship grows. And, on her character poster, we see the responsibility she feels for Ahn in the caption: “If something happens to you, how could I not know.”
Ryu Deok-hwan play Ahn Ji-ho’s homeroom and science teacher Lee Sun-woo. Coming from an affluent background, he was placed in his job by his father and has the privilege of enjoying perks that other teachers cannot. However, he takes his job seriously, works hard, tries to show consideration to the other teachers, and is committed to his students. On his poster, the dilemma he feels as a character is referenced as: “I feel stuck between telling a comforting lie or an uncomfortable truth.”
The role Park Hoon plays is Baek Sang-ho, the CEO of the hotel where Ahn Ji-ho’s accident occurs. A weathered and self-made man, he grew up with a survival of the fittest mentality and now enjoys the fruit of his hard labor. The text on his poster speaks to his life motto, “We all become adults eventually. If we are still living. If we survive.”
SBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama No One Knows is currently set to premiere on March 2, following Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2.

Thanks for your heads-up on NO ONE KNOWS, @tccolb. Neither did I! I'm tickled to see that Ryu Deok-hwan and Park Hoon are in it. Two of my faves in one drama. Yippee!
For some reason I'm getting a SOLOMON'S PERJURY vibe.

I just realized that the lady cop is played by the same actress who portrayed the horrible journalist in COME HERE AND HUG ME. And the awful doctor/hospital owner in GREAT SEDUCER / TEMPTED. Kim Seo-hyung really earned her paycheck because she made me loathe both characters.
Let's see how long I last with yet another serial killer in the mix. As it is, I've had to drop TELL ME WHAT YOU SAW, despite my love for Jang Hyuk. And I haven't even started THE CURSED, even though it's been on my to-watch list since it was first announced as METHOD.
*crawls off to watch finale of STOVE LEAGUE, which has no detectable serial killers*

Well, character assassins, but no serial killers in SL.

@owl22,
You're absolutely right. Considering what they've done to my blood pressure, they might as well be serial killers. :-(

Also in the cast:
Park Chul-min, one of my all-time favorite funny men, but I don't think this is going to be a comedy.
Ms. Jang Young-nam has me jumping for joy. If she has a showdown with Detective Cha, I can imagine the sparks that could fly. It would be epic.
Min Jin-woong, chef Cha-young's PITA bro from CHOCOLATE.
Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Chi-soo in CROWNED CLOWN.
Kim Sae-ron portrays the young Detective Cha.
Yoon Chan-young, who's played the younger versions of Yang Se-jong, Yoo Yeon-seok, Yoon Kyun-sang, Byun Yo-han, Seo Kang-joon, and Hong Jong-hyun, among others.

@pakalanapikake,
Make me number three on not knowing that NO ONE KNOWS was coming soon. My first reaction to reading @tccolb's report was:
1. This looks really good; and
2. Mar. 2 premiere. I better get going on catching up on RD, TK 2.
Then I looked at the leads and initially I only recognized Park Hoon and I said well, "that seals the deal". What a 2019 he had in dramas.
Then I looked up Kim Seo-hyung in AsianWiki and I saw that the only drama I have seen her in is COME AND HUG ME where she played Reporter Park Hee-young. Oh my!
May I be a little snooty here and concur with your loathing of her character in CAHM by quoting a comment I made in WWW (7-14-18). This comes on a rant of mine on the portrayal of reporters/journalists in CAHM:
If Kim Seo-hyung's police officer Cha Young-jin in NOBODY KNOWS is a righteous as her Reporter Park Hee-young was despicable in CAHM she will be terrific in her new drama.
Also since this an SBS production hopefully there will be no availability angst.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
Park Hoon was great in HAECHI. I've been a fan of Ryu Deok-hwan since I saw him play King Gongmin in FAITH. He had tremendous presence as the Goryeo king who had been a hostage to Yuan. His eye acting is top-notch. If you haven't seen him in GOD'S QUIZ: REBOOT with Kim Jae-won, you're in for a treat. Also, that show features an AI that figures prominently. (Speaking of MY HOLO LOVE.)
All I can say is that this cast is dynamite. I'm looking forward to seeing how they interact. ;-)

She was also the evil coach in "Sky Castle" which is also a very successful show. She is a very good actress, no doubt.

@shazzytree,
Aw, thank you for your take on CURSED. I thought it would be a good drama, I'm just not sure that I myself could get through it. Given some of the dramas I've watched in recent years (e.g., VOICE, GUEST, COME HERE AND HUG ME, KILL IT, PRIEST), I'm becoming more reluctant to put myself through the psychological wringer. It may be a matter of timing, too. I might have to be in the right mood to give it a try. Sometimes the stress of live-watching makes it that much more difficult. But that's just me. ;-)

I hope this show does well for her sake. She always made her characters stand out in different ways, which unfortunately are mostly villains.
I was worried that she wasn't getting a lot of buzz compared to the rest of SKY Castle gang especially after her heartbreaking interview in Guerilla Date. (Around 10:20 of this clip, though it's worth watching the whole thing because she's so funny and sweet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Z24M8qLIU)
This was just a day after SKY Castle wrapped up. The host asked about her career prospects after the show. KSH answered that she's unable to enjoy the "new"found fame. 10 years ago, she played another iconic villain and she happily thought she'd get more projects, but she ended up not getting any offers because she played the baddie too well. (My other fave, Kim So-yeon, experienced the same years-long slump-of-hate after of All About Eve.)
She ends the interview on a hopeful note that audiences these days are more appreciative of well-played roles, even if the character is hateful onscreen. She also says that she's the same now as 10 years ago. Which is, she'll keep playing the roles she's given as best as she can. :')
I'm glad she's getting a chance to be a drama lead. I hope she gets the same career turnaround as Kim So-yeon and all the villain-actors we've built a shrine of appreciation for. (Hello, Shin Sung-rok and Lee Yuri LOL)

Thanks for the info & video link.
I heard she was on Lee Dong Wook's talk show recently and had a candid moment (Short video clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bw4fBvQCmro)
I hope this drama turns out well for her too. Something about it reminds me of MBC's Children of Nobody. Maybe due to the fact that the main lead is female and there's a mystery surrounding a child. Hope the story is just as compelling.

Thank you for the link, @mary. What a bummer to have done such a good job as a villain that no roles were offered to Kim Seo-hyung for years afterwards. I just hope that she hasn't been typecast. In the case of NO ONE KNOWS, I can easily imagine her playing a hard-boiled cop.
What I didn't expect was how funny she is. ;-)

FWIW @pakalanapikake. I checked out the 2 teasers available at Kocowa.
KSH appears to be in fine form and I got a Jane Tennison (PRIME SUSPECT) vibe but one who is more physical.

I wonder why it's so hard to accept villainous or "unlikeable" women, when there are countless men playing the worst of characters and still finding work.
This always pisses me off.
I would love for there to be more diverse characters for women to play, without them having to worry about their career prospects!

We're on the same wavelength, @yuyuu. There is a double standard for sure. What's sauce for the gander should be sauce for the goose as well. Hrmpf!
I wonder if it has something to do with female characters often being poorly written and underdeveloped, so that they are basically cardboard. Also frequently missing in action is a back story that gives insight into such characters' motivations. Without that, it's difficult to empathize with them. I really can't stand it when female baddies seem to be motivated by pure bitchiness, which crops up quite often in older dramas.
It's a breath of fresh air when a skilled actress brings a baddie to life with finesse and layers of nuance -- as well as outright malevolence. I cannot abide the screeching that used to be par for the course for such characters. Give me mesmerizing eye acting, captivating voice modulation, deft micro-expressions, and body language that speaks volumes, and I'll be a happy camper. And maybe most important of all, the ability to go for broke while doing all of the above.
I just watched ep. 15 of CRASH LANDING ON YOU. Oh Man-seok has been doing a great job with his villainous character. Even though he does evil things, I can understand why, and how he got to be that way. He's evil and tragic, and never had a chance. Why can't female villains be cut the same kind of slack?
Now that I think of it, Honey Lee did a memorable job portraying Yeonsangun's red hot mama Jang Nok-soo in REBEL. She was hell-bent on revenge, and rightfully so. REBEL also gave us the greedy wife of Yangban Jo, who was played to perfection by Seo Yi-sook, who also portrayed Lee Pil-mo's mother from hell in HAPPY HOME. She is magnificent in both roles. Why does she get a pass, while Kim Seo-hyung does not? Might it have something to do with both of Seo Yi-sook's mother figures living up to Confucian ideals, whereas Kim Seo-hyung's Shin Ae-ri in TEMPTATION OF WIFE is a femme fatale who messes around like one of the boys (whose randy behavior always gets a patriarchal free pass)? [I just watched the first two episodes, to get a taste of the character. She's already a piece of work.]
It could be that Kim Seo-hyung's vivid portrayal of a female character who merrily flouted social norms ran into the brick wall of conservatism in ROK. That's just my guess.

Kim Seo-hyung is really a great actress. She's very charismatic but so funny in TV show.
It looks interesting but kinda reminds me Solomon's Perjury and Beautiful World, all these young people falling from the rooftop...

I like the cast but the plot sounds a lot like Beautiful World but with a teacher and neighbor searching for the truth instead of parents. I'll give it a try though.
